We play & sing at 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. All you need is
to be a member and one dollar activity fee every
Wednesday.
Bring your instrument and voice, the door is always
open to new comers. Come down for some fun and a
good time.
What’s all the fuss about “Getting Involved”? After all,
you’re probably retired now, shouldn’t have to commit
to anything anymore. Well, that was the way it was 20
years ago. Sure, it’s good to take a break after you
give up working, probably necessary, but what about
after that? Take our Pancake Breakfast for example,
upwards of 100 people pool together to pull off a 3day breakfast that feeds about 600 people. Those 100
people are volunteers from our membership. They
walk away after the weekend feeling a little tired, but
tremendously uplifted knowing that they have contributed to something greater than themselves. The Centre benefits from the fund-raising effort, the members
benefit by getting out of their houses and away from
their regular lives even if just for a few days, not to
mention that the physical aspects of the work are usually beneficial to a person’s overall health and wellbeing.
Being part of a 55+ Centre is a good way to get involved, meet new people, and have an opportunity to
contribute to something greater than your self.
Our annual membership BBQ comes around in September each year, a good time to join if you’re new to
the area, a great time to renew and meet up with long
time friends after a Summer full of memories to talk
about.
Current membership at New Horizons stands at 615
with 126 of those being new to the Centre this year.

May 30 - We managed to golf all five Mondays in May without
being rained out. Today was rather wet and cart paths only but it
was a sunny and warm afternoon. Some golfers had their best
game this year—not so much.
We had a two way tie for First Place at plus four. On a count
back - First Place went to the team of Ian Thompson, Harvey
Rosenbaum, June Isfeld & Emily Devlin. Second Place went to
Garry Peterson, Vaughan Cochrane, Elaine Thompson, and Laurie Stirton. We had a two way tie for Third Place. After a count
back, Third Place went to Al Kist, Mark Zimmerman, Bill Morrison and Dave McNabb. Closest to the hole on Number 1, Ladies - Suzanne Barrow, Men - Garry Peterson. Number 7,
Ladies - June Isfeld, Men - Terry Janzen.
June 6 - The course was quiet, wet, and cart paths only. The
weather in the afternoon turned out to be fine for golf.
First Place at Plus 3 went to the team of Bernie Plischke, Mark
Zimmerman, Rick Edwards and Emily Devlin. We had a three
way tie at plus 2. Second Place on a count back were Bill Morrison, Roger Newman, Ian Thompson and Laurie Stirton. Third
Place on the count back went to Mike Devlin, Bill McPherson,
Marion Joss and Pat Watson. Closest to the hole on Number 1,
Ladies - Joanne McNabb, Men - Rick Edwards. Number 7,
Ladies - Suzanne Barrow, Men - Larry Gel.
June 13 - We had a beautiful day with a warm sunny afternoon.
Maybe that is why the scores were better, or maybe it was because it was partner day.
First Place went to Rick Edwards and Kathy McPherson and
Graham & Pat Watson with a plus 6. Second Place at plus 5
was the team of Sam Bobbie, Dennis Legros, June Isfeld and
Wally Boitson. Third Place was a tie at plus four. On a count
back the team included Bill Sass, Larry Gel and Rod & Nancy
Allen. Closest to the hole on Number 1, Ladies - Lois Schell,
Men - Bill Sass. Number 7, Ladies - Joanne McNabb, Men Rick Edwards.
June 20 - Another nice day for golf. One more week left in
June. First Place team at plus seven went to Ian Thompson,
Rolly Crothers, Nancy Allen and Doris Lloyd. Second Place at
plus 6 were Chuck Vincett, Georgie Rutter, Jo Ann Tesarski, and
Don Hayden. Third Place at plus 3 were Mark Zimmerman,
Lynn Henning and Dave McNabb. Closest to the hole on Number 1, Ladies - Doris Lloyd, Men - Bill Sass.
June 27 - A beautiful warm sunny day with a little breeze.
First Place at plus 3 were Bill Sass, Roger Newman, Carl Berg
and Georgie Rutter. Second Place at plus 8 was the team of
Larry Gel, Allen Dixon, Bill Morrison and Emily Devlin. Third
Place at plus 3 after a count back included Garry Peterson,
George Barrow, Leona Crothers and Cathy Daniluk. Closest to
the hole on Number 1, Ladies - Laurie Stirton, Men - Garry
Peterson. Number 7, Ladies - Linda Shipman, Men - Wayne
Matson.

The New Horizons photo group has been sharing
travel photos at recent meetings. At our June meeting we began touring the globe with Dana Albright
who went to the South Pole and Argentina, Debbie
Einarson who went to the Rockies, Panama and
Mexico, Jen & Don Heinrichs who toured Canada's
East Coast, and Jocelyn Dechaine who went to Sturgis. We still have to go to French Polynesia with
Richard Weinholdt and Cuba with Kerry Knudson.
Summer plans include a session on camera accessories, guest speakers from the Lab Works talking
about printing options, and a retired educator who
has become an online photo book expert. We are
meeting throughout the summer but the schedule will
be shifting to accommodate organizers' travel plans
and special presenters' schedules. Get on our email
list to hear about upcoming meeting dates and
themes, outings, and special events. We are at [email protected]

Still quiet in there!!
That's fine after a busy year. We sure look forward to
our good programs being supported by old and new
volunteers come September. Watch for opportunities
to join in on a fun working team to turn out welcome
goodies!!
Meanwhile Most of you will sign up for the Pancake
Breakfast schedule I’m sure. See you there!!
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
A geek was crossing a road one day, when a frog
called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn
into a beautiful princess."
He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his
pocket.
The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me
and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I will
stay with you for one week."
The geek took the frog out of his pocket, smiled
at it and returned it to the pocket.
The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn
me back into a Princess, I'll stay with you for one
week and do ANYTHING you want."
Again, the geek took the frog out, smiled at it and
put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've
told you I'm a beautiful princess and that I'll stay
with you for one week and do anything you want.
Why won't you kiss me?"
The geek said, "Look, I'm a geek. I don't have
time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog? Now that's
cool."
After being married for thirty years, a wife asked
her husband to describe her.
He looked at her for a while, and then said,
"You're A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K."
She asked, "What does that mean?"
He said, "Adorable, Beautiful, Cute, Delightful,
Elegant, Foxy, Gorgeous, Hot."
She smiled happily and said, "Oh, that's so
lovely. What about I, J, K?"
He said, "I'm Just Kidding!"
A man staggers into an emergency room with
two black eyes and a five iron wrapped tightly
around his throat.
Naturally the doctor asks him what happened.
"Well, it was like this," said the man. "I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife when she
sliced her ball into a pasture of cows.
"We went to look for it and while I was rooting
around, I noticed one of the cows had something white at its rear end.
"I walked over and lifted up the tail and sure
enough, there was my wife's golf ball -- stuck
right in the middle of the cow's butt. That's when
I made my mistake."
"What did you do?" asks the doctor.
"Well, I lifted the tail and yelled to my wife, 'Hey,
this looks like yours!'"
A farmer went out one day and bought a brand
new stud rooster for his chicken coop. The new
rooster struts over to the old rooster and says, "OK
old guy, time for you to retire."
The old rooster replies, "Come on, surely you cannot handle ALL of these chickens. Look what it
has done to me. Can't you just let me have the two
old hens over in the corner?"
L
The young rooster says, "Beat it. You are washed
up and I am taking over."
The old rooster says, "I tell you what, young stud. I
will race you around the farmhouse. Whoever wins
gets the exclusive domain over the entire chicken
coop."
The young rooster laughs. "You know you don't
stand a chance, old man. So, just to be fair, I will
give you a head start."
T
The old rooster takes off running. About 15 seconds later the young rooster takes off running after
him. They round the front porch of the farmhouse
and the young rooster has closed the gap.
He is only about 5 feet behind the old rooster and
gaining fast.
The farmer, meanwhile, is sitting in his usual spot
on the front porch when he sees the roosters running by. He grabs his shotgun and - BOOM - he
blows the young rooster to bits.
E
The farmer sadly shakes his head and says, "Darn.
Third gay rooster I bought this month."

Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside with
only a pet dog for company. One day the dog
died, and Muldoon went to the parish priest and
asked, "Father, my dog is dead. Could ya' be
saying' a mass for the poor creature?"
Father Patrick replied, "I'm afraid not; we cannot
have services for an animal in the church. But
there are some Baptists down the lane, and
there's no tellin' what they believe. Maybe they'll
do something for the creature."
Muldoon said, "I'll go right away Father. Do ya'
think $5,000 is enough to donate to them for the
service?"
Father Patrick exclaimed, "Sweet Mary, Mother
of Jesus! Why didn't ya tell me the dog was
Catholic?
As the light changed from red to green to yellow and
back to red again, I sat there thinking about life. Was
it nothing more than a bunch of honking and yelling?
Sometimes it seemed that way.

The Fibre Arts group will be hosting a “Colouring
and Painting and Dyeing… Oh My!!!” class Tuesday, July 26 starting at 10:00 am and going for most
of the day. Paints, dyes, brushes, salt, stones, etc.
will be supplied. There is a $10 fee to help cover the
cost of the supplies. Participants need to bring cotton fabric including 2 or 3 m of white depending how
much you want to use, about a fat quarter of a dark
colour – navy blue or black or dark green for the discharge dyeing.
All fabric needs to be washed and dried without the
use of fabric softeners in the wash or the dryer.
Bring found, flat objects for the sun prints. It could
include buttons, washers, chains, pressed leaves,
cutouts, basically anything that can get damp and
lays flat.
Please wear clothing that you can get paint or dye on
(including shoes), latex or similar gloves, an old hand
towel, a container to take your stuff home in – a Rubbermaid type tub.
If the weather is good, we will be working outside, so
a hat and sunscreen and maybe some bug juice.
There will be homework. The pound painting, for example, needs to batch for a few days and the dyed
and painted fabrics need to be washed and dried and
ironed.
Areas that will be covered include: cold water dyeing,
discharging and adding colour, marbling, colouring
with crayons, sun prints, pound painting, stamping
and stenciling (if you have your own stamps or stencils, bring them and we will also make some of our
own).
It will be a fast and furious day so bring your lunch.
If you are interested, let Janice know at
[email protected] or call 204 376 2649. A copy of
the instruction booklet will be emailed to you prior to
the class and you can either download it or print it
out.
There will be some odors with the paints and dyes
and that is one of the reasons to work outside.
Hopefully Mother Nature agrees and gives us a nice
day.

SOCIAL
BUILDING & MAINTENANCE
The Office
Roy Clarke
Not too much to report this month.
Gimli New Horizons is now the proud owner of a
Whipper-Snipper, and a trim of all areas has
been done. This will, of course, be an on-going
Summer activity! We have also purchased a 5
gallon sprayer in an attempt to eradicate some
of the weeds out back. Trying to be eco-friendly,
we are mixing a concoction of vinegar, Epsom
salts and Dawn and hoping the weeds hate it
enough to disappear.
Discussions are on-going with various contractors and officials concerning the front ramp, front
door and parking lot area woes.
Enjoy the Summer!!
You’re gettin Older When...
You get the same sensation from a rocking chair
that you once got from a roller coaster.
Unfortunately, the Sock Hop was not meant to be.
A second attempt was made to proceed with this illfated event on June 18th. Only 14 tickets were sold
the second time around meaning it had to be cancelled. Some members are speculating that because of the time of year a lot of people are probably knee deep in their Summer time pass-times.
The ever-persistent Social volunteers will undoubtedly be spending some time planning in the next
couple of months on the rest of the up-coming social events here at the Centre.
Our Social committee works very hard for the Centre and it’s members. Organizing, planning, and
setting up an event usually involves many people, a
fair bit of time and a few resources provided by the
Centre. If you’re a New Horizons member and you
like this type of thing, please consider joining the
group next year and give them a hand.
It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser.
News from the
Seniors Resource Program
The Gimli Seniors Resource Council and Staff would like
to thank everyone who participated in our Runway of Style

who purchased tickets, donated to the silent auction, the

couldn’t have done it without you. Once again thank you!
