BEATZ IN THE BARRIO:
HIP HOP IN THE LATINO
COMMUNITY
Hip hop culture has an art style all its own
and new artists are emerging within that
community all the time. Michel Cruz Flores
and Eric Villarreal are two such artists and
their work is on display right now in a new
exhibit at the Galeria de la Rosa in Fort
Worth. Called Beatz in the Barrio, this exhibit - curated by Artes de la Rosa Artistic
Director Adam Adolfo – explores the rich,
vibrant and diverse world of hip hop culture
and the Latino community’s special place
within it. The exhibit is a companion piece
to the Artes de la Rosa Regional Premiere
stage production of Welcome to Arroyo's,
which opens this weekend.
See Michel and Eric’s art for free at the
Artes de la Rosa's Art Gallery, located at
1442 North Main Street in Fort Worth.
WHY WE LOVE CORUNDAS
We never pass up an opportunity to
devour a corunda and you shouldn’t
either. If you’ve never had one, they
are very similar in taste and texture
to tamales, except without a pork filling. Made up of corn flour masa ,
corundas are wrapped in a long green
corn plant leaf and steamed to perfection. They usually take on a triangle shape but we’ve also seen a few
round ones out in the wild. Typically
they are enjoyed with a dollop of sour
cream and salsa but we’ve also had
them alongside pork. Love corundas
as much as we do? Tell us how you
enjoy them on Facebook, on Twitter
@MercadoBilingue or email us at
[email protected].

WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO:
BOMBA ESTÉREO
We first heard Bomba Estéreo’s catchy pop/
hip-hop/electronic beats on, of all things, a
Target commercial. On an English channel,
no less! While the commercial itself was
revolutionary (it featured a variety of influential
and inspirational Latinas), the catchy, happy
go lucky “Soy Yo” song in the background also
stuck with us.
This Colombian band has actually been
around since 2005, in various forms, and have
been nominated for Grammys in recent years.
Their spunky music is both rhythmic and wildly
creatively, resulting in upbeat, energetic music
that feels vibrant. To listen to some of our favorite
tracks, head over to MercadoBilingue.com.

FROM VENEZUELA TO THE TOP OF THE FASHION
INDUSTRY: LEONARDO D’ALMAGRO
by Estela Trevizo
Meet fashion powerhouse Leonardo D’Almagro, a Venezuelan designer
and philanthropist who has created his own jewelry line that is
taking the fashion world by storm. After starting a fashion business
consultant business in Austin in 2010, Leonardo has since gained
experience as a fashion editor, television host/producers for national
and international fashion networks and as an ambassador for Harper’s
Bazaar Style. Leonardo’s fashion work has been featured in Univision,
MSN.com, MSN.com Brazil, USA Hispanic market, and Telemundo,
just to name a few.
Leonardo’s jewelry line, which uses the best gems and high quality
materials, has received worldwide recognition. In fact, his timeless
jewelry will be featured in the largest jewelry show in the world:
VICENZAORO in Vicenza, Italy.
Leonardo’s success story has been impressive, particularly when you
consider he is new to this country. With all this experience under his
belt, he is ready to offer great advice for those trying to break into the
fashion industry.

MAYO 2016
ESTELA: WHAT IS THE
INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR
JEWELRY DESIGNS?
LEONARDO D’ALMAGRO: When
in the roles of fashion editor and
fashion stylist for individuals
and designers, I came to truly
appreciate
the
importance
of jewelry that is not only
beautiful, but versatile, can
make a statement, and can easily
transition from day-to-night. I
set out to create pieces that were
versatile enough to go with any
look and meet the needs of any
client’s lifestyle while keeping high
quality and great style in mind.
I HAVE SEEN YOUR JEWELRY
FEATURED ON MANY
CELEBRITIES HERE IN DALLAS.
FROM SOME OF THE REAL
HOUSEWIVES OF DALLAS
TO BLOGGER/HOST HILARY
KENNEDY. HOW HAS THAT
BEEN FOR YOU?
Wow! I feel so very blessed. For
example, imagine my honor to
see national TV host Gabriela
Natale wearing my jewelry line
as she received her Emmy
Awards; having the fashion
house Binzario Couture pairing
their spectacular designs with
my jewelry line for their runway
show in Paris Fashion Week; and
having celebrity fashion stylist
and TV host Jeanette Chivvis not
only doing a fashion segment with
my jewelry line but also wearing
it personally. Of course, as you
mentioned, the fabulous Hilary
Kennedy has been so wonderful,
and The Real Housewives of
Dallas’ LeeAnne Locken and
Tiffany Hendra have both been
so very gracious and amazingly
supportive. I truly don’t have the
words to adequately express my
sincere gratitude to everyone for
their kindness and support.
MERCADO BILINGÜE
WHICH CELEBRITY WEARING
YOUR JEWELRY WOULD BE A
DREAM COME TRUE?
[Smiles] Well, of course I really work
hard to create pieces with the hope
that everyone can find something
that they love to wear… but, there
is someone who I admire and of
whom I've been a fan for years. It
would be a dream come true to
see my compatriot, Venezuelan
supermodel, philanthropist, and
actress, Patricia Velásquez wearing
my jewelry line.
WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS
BEEN YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS
IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
You’re so kind for saying that
I'm successful, but I'd rather say
that I'm reaching my goals. The
key is to never quit, no matter
the obstacles, and understand
that goals evolve and change. I
MERCADO BILINGÜE
educate myself constantly and
always have my friends, family and
my husband and daughter by my
side. I couldn’t do it without their
love and support and I am thankful
for each of them every single day.
WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DO
YOU THINK BEING LATINO
HAS HAD ON YOUR GROWTH
IN THE US MARKETS? HAS
IT BEEN AN OBSTACLE OR AN
OPPORTUNITY?
Hmm. Tough question, but the truth
is, both. We don't want to admit or
say that being a minority matters,
but it does affect us. Unfortunately,
some have bullied me or closed
doors to me just because I'm Latino,
but I think that it's because their
current level of cultural development
doesn't yet allow them to see me
as a human or what can I bring to
the table. I am more than a color,
or accent, or sexual orientation.
However, I take all of that in stride
and embrace those experiences, as
they make me stronger.
I am so proud to be Latino,
and want to show the young Latino
generation that you can achieve
your goals if you work hard and
are honest with yourself. That’s
why I support such varied nonprofit organization and charities;
it doesn't necessarily matter to
which ethnic group they belong
or support, because at the end
of the day it's about supporting
our communities.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS
IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
Like I always say, "baby steps".
We’re continually working on
expanding
our
international
presence; right now, we are in
Spain, Colombia, Argentina, and
MAYO 2016
of course here in the USA. Time
and hard work will determine the
path of the Leonardo D’Almagro
brand. I like to have our options
open, and have the freedom to
adapt to our clients’ requests.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE
TO ANYONE LOOKING TO START
THEIR OWN LINE IN FASHION,
BE IT JEWELRY OR CLOTHING?
First of all, educate yourself
about the line of business in
which you’re interested. Find
mentors, and be humble enough
to learn from the advice and
criticism you receive. Be patient,
work task-by-task towards your
goals, and develop an honest and
talented team that understands
and believes in your vision.

D’Almagro’s pieces visit

MIS
MOTORES
The Toyota RAV4 was the coolest crossover
vehicle on the block before crossovers were
even a thing. Two decades later, a mild refresh
for 2016 has kept the RAV4 at the front of the
pack, even if most of the additions are under
the hood or built into the body of the vehicle.
Perhaps the significant addition to the RAV4
lineup this year is an SE model which Toyota
says is the sportiest of the bunch.
First Things First…
The design of the Toyota RAV4 has always
struck a nice balance between being
uniquely modern but conservative enough to
keep crossover enthusiasts comfortable. The
minor refreshes in the 2016 RAV4 follow
along the same lines. Not much is changed
on the outside of the vehicle: it’s still small,
“squarish” but certainly aerodynamic. The
front end has been taken in a bit, resulting
in a more blunt nose but it doesn’t take
away from the overall shape. There might be
“sportier” looking crossover vehicles on the
market, sure, but the RAV4 remains confident
in its appearance and there is enough here to
make it stand out from the crowd.
What has changed significantly this year
is the interior, but in ways that might not be
immediately apparent.
For instance, the
quality of the materials used throughout the
6
2016 TOYOTA RAV4 SE
by Phillip Morales
cabin feels like a giant step forward from
previous years. The leather padded upholstery,
the plastic trim around the center console, and
the attention to detail in the stitching across
the dash were all extremely pleasant to the
touch. Front seating is very comfortable but, in
stark contrast, the rear bench feels a bit rigid.
If cargo space is what you’re looking for, the
RAV4 offers a spacious 73.4 cubic feet area
when the back seats are folded down.
The ride inside the RAV4 wasn’t quite as
quiet as I was hoping for, particularly when
road conditions are less than perfect, but it’s
certainly quieter than years past.
One With The Road
Also new this year to the RAV4 lineup is a
hybrid engine that gives drivers a combined
mpg rating of 33. We haven’t tested that
model yet – our SE AWD RAV4 came with
the standard 2.5-liter engine which kicks
out 176 horsepower paired with a 6 speed
automatic transmission; it’s a lesser rating of
25 mpg combined. The “SE” designation
adds a sport-tuned suspension and paddle
shifters behind the steering wheel. The icing
on the cake is the optional all-wheel drive
system which allows up to 50% more power
to be diverted to the rear tires when Sport
mode is turned on.
While the RAV4 performed well with this
Sport mode switched on and paddle shifters
in use, normal driving felt surprisingly
bland. This is not necessaryly a bad thing.
Acceleration was satisfying and the RAV
feels very grounded to the road, making
for some comfortable driving in inclement
weather. I felt a real sense of security
being so “tied to the road”, especially when
tackling wide and sharp curves. However,
there is a certain sense of exhilaration that
is missing here; it isn’t a deal breaker but
definetely a bit disappointing.
Street Cred
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 remains one of the
cool kids in the crossover vehicle bunch,
probably because it’s got street cred. It’s
been around the block and each time it
comes around, it gets better and better. It
might just want to start going a little quicker.
MSRP for the 2016 Toyota RAV4 SE is
$29,265. Tested at $30,665.
MAYO 2016
MERCADO BILINGÜE
THIS SUMMER, LOOK OUT
FOR PEOPLE WALKING,
CHILDREN PLAYING
With summertime just around the corner,
North Texas children will soon have
MERCADO BILINGÜE
more opportunities to be outside in their
neighborhoods. Making sure neighborhoods
are safe for kids means looking out for people
walking as we drive and bicycle.
Remember to stop or yield to people
crossing at crosswalks, whether marked or
unmarked. Always be prepared to yield to
people walking by scanning the street and
sides of the street ahead. Furthermore, when
driving, never block or park in a crosswalk.
Preventing people from using designated
crosswalks creates unsafe circumstances for
anyone who is using the street.
Children can be especially difficult
to see from a moving vehicle. Their size,
unpredictable movements and tendency
to run across the street make them easy to
miss. Parents can supervise their children
and teach them street safety, but it is up to
everyone to look out for children playing near
or crossing the street.
Drivers should always yield to crossing
pedestrians, but people walking should
look out, too. Many families will spend
MAYO 2016
time outside in the coming months, and
watching for vehicles and supervising
young children as they play ensures
everyone is doing their part.
People of all ages can help make
themselves visible to drivers by wearing
reflective materials and white or bright clothing
when they are walking or jogging, especially in
the early morning, evening and night. Drivers
using headlights can see reflective materials
from up to three times farther away.
Unfortunately, in North Texas, the
number of crashes between people driving
and people walking or bicycling has
increased in the past five years, as well
as resulting fatalities. Understanding how
people bicycling, walking and driving should
interact together is important to improving
safety on area streets and protecting our
friends, families and neighbors.
To see more walking safety tips as
well as bicycling and driving tips being
highlighted around the region this spring, visit
