Information Paper: Travelling around Mainz
1. From the airport (Frankfurt am Main) to the main station (Mainz)
At the airport you will find the railway station (level 0) beneath Terminal 1 (level 3).
Tickets to Mainz (one way 4,25 €) are available at the DB Travel Centre (DB
Reisezentrum) or at the ticket machines, both situated at level 0.
From rail track 3 you can take the train (S-Bahn) of the line 8 towards Wiesbaden,
leaving every 30 minutes. The train will take about 25 minutes to the stop “Mainz
Hauptbahnhof”.
Be careful, do not exit at the stops before: “Mainz Bischofsheim”, “Mainz
Gustavsburg”, “Mainz Römisches Theater”.

2. From the main station to the hotel (advena Europa Hotel)
To get to the hotel there is no need to use public transport. When you get outside the
train station you will find yourself at the square where all the busses take off. From
there you only have to go straight through a very short alley (Schottstraße) – just
between the hotel “Hammer” to the left and the restaurant “Besitos” to the right – and

get to the main street (Kaiserstraße). From there you will only pass one intersecting
street and find the hotel on the left after only two minutes: Kaiserstraße 7.
3. From the hotel to the workshop’s location
From the hotel you can easily get back to the main station. There you will find
different stops indicated with a letter. Since the workshop happens to be at the
university, you can take all the busses that take off at station G. Those are the
following bus numbers: 9 (towards Isaac-Fulda-Allee/Aareon AG), 54 (towards
Lerchenberg Brucknerstraße), 55 (towards Finthen Theodor-Heuss-Straße), 58
(towards Finthen Römerquelle), 68 (towards Klein-Winternheim-Ober Olm Bahnhof).
With each of these busses you will only drive 3 stops and exit at “Friedrich-vonPfeiffer-Weg” (one way, short trip 1,60 €). Be careful, do not exit at the stop
“Universität”. Tickets are available at the drivers in the busses themselves or at the
ticket machines on the square outside the main station.

“Friedrich-vonPfeiffer-Weg”
From the bus stop you need to cross the bridge that leads to the other side of the
highway (Saarstraße). Now you turn left onto the street (Wittichweg) with the crosswalk. Then you pass the intersecting street (Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg) on the right
and the parking sites on the left and eventually get to the back entrance of the
Philosophicum.
Inside, you go straight up to the gangway on the right, where you will find the
cafeteria. Follow this gangway to its end and then take the stairs on your left to the
level above: There will be the main venue of the workshop (Fakultätssaal).

4. From the hotel to the restaurant (Proviant Magazin)
The restaurant we chose for the Friday evening is close to the heart of the city and
yet not too far from the hotel. You can either take a walk of approximately 10 minutes
or take the bus/the tram from the main station for one stop only.

Walking: Cross the main street (Kaiserstraße) and follow it to the right direction.
Turn left into the street where all the busses and trams – you can see the tracks on
the ground – drive through (Bahnhofstraße). From here you only walk straight, pass
some intersecting streets and one bus stop (Münsterplatz) until you get to a
somehow red looking building on the right: That will be the Proviant Magazin
restaurant.
Taking public transport: From the main station to the restaurant you can take every
bus from station I (have a look at the station map from point 3 on this paper), they will
all drive through the city’s centre. You will have to exit immediately at the first stop
“Münsterplatz” (one way, short trip 1,60 €). From the bus stop you have to follow the
main street and the direction of the train tracks on the ground (Schillerstraße). You
will see the building from the picture above on the right after a few metres: That will
be the Proviant Magazin restaurant.
