Augustine Institute
Fall 2016
This course will provide students with an introduction to
moral and spiritual theology in the Catholic tradition.
The first part of the course will focus on moral theology,
following the order of the third part of the Catechism of
the Catholic Church: Life in Christ. In addition to a careful
study of the moral act, topics will include: the human
person, the moral law, human freedom, virtue, and
bioethics. The course will also offer an emphasis on
how to communicate the Church’s moral teachings.
The second part of the course will focus on spiritual
theology, following the fourth part of the Catechism:
Christian Prayer. We will examine the universal call
to prayer, different spiritual traditions in the Catholic
Church, and the writings of specific saints.
Both sections of the course will rely on a careful reading
of select texts, including Veritatis Splendor. Additionally,
both will examine contemporary challenges.
