ADVERTISING
Magazine space is no-cost to organizations or individuals caring for
animals who need homes. Monthly business sponsorship rates are $300/
150/75/35 for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad in color,
and $200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year subscription is $25.
ADOPTION CRITERIA
Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All organizations
require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic expenses. All will
require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely a utility animal for protection
or hunting. Most will ensure that the animals are spayed or neutered at
the time of adoption; underfunded shelters may instead require a spay/
neuter contract and a deposit that will be refunded upon proof of spay or
neuter. Most will want to visit your home and see where the pet will live.
Because many of these animals have not been well treated in the past,
extra care is taken to ensure their safety and happiness in the future.

Care of Amber
Satin is a sweetheart
approximately 1 year old
and 40 lbs. She is super
sweet and loves to give
kisses! Satin is good around
all people and children, but
she’s still a puppy, so she’s
quite rambunctious. She is
thought to be a Lab/Pit Bull
mix.
To meet Satin, contact Amber at (865) 577-2810 or
[email protected].
Athena is a 2 month old

Jughead is a 3 month old
Great Swiss Mtn. Dog mix
that is very calm.
Lass is a 8 week old
Mountain Dog mix. She is
very sweet.
Marla is a 7 month old Maine

Miracle is a 3 year old male
with short hair that is very

Polly is a very sweet 1 year

Cover Girl: Tasi Noble
Tasi Noble and owner Dave
Dunlap were the winners of the
second annual American Cancer
Society Bark For Life held
September 19, 2010, at Petsafe
Dog Park in the Tommy
Schumpert Park in Knox County.
Following is Dave’s story:
Noble came into my life through the Afghan Hound
Rescue organization in Charlotte. It was an instant bond and
mutual friendship when we met. Noble trusted me and I trusted
him. He was about 1 year old, playful and full of energy. He
was always ready to go or do something outside. He really
enjoys meeting people and getting attention from them. As we
walked each day, he became my buddy, and we solved the
problems of the world together.
Shortly after Noble turned 2 years old, I was
diagnosed with skin cancer. I was scared. I began to undergo
skin treatments. Noble did not care that I had huge red areas
of skin being treated. I had treatment areas on my arms and
then later on my face. He still wanted to go for walks, and
made sure we stuck to our daily routine. He kept me on the go,
meeting our friends and neighbors along our walks. Some
people said nothing about my obvious skin condition, but many
people said they understood what I was going through. As time
went by I looked around and saw other people from all walks of
life going through the same thing. I am lucky my skin cancer
was diagnosed early. And I am lucky to have Noble, who kept
me going during a hard time and is always ready to go out and
enjoy another long walk with his buddy.

Louie is a wonderful boy who was a stray
and obviously someone’s special guy. We
have no idea why he wasn’t found. Louie is
a well-trained boy on all basic commands
and even claps his hands! He knows some
special tricks. Louie does well with dogs and
humans, walks well on a leash and is a
perfect house guest.
Fair is a
handsome,
sweet 2
year old
boy. He is
in the
GRFT Cell
Program
where he
will get lots
of attention
and be
taught basic obedience.
Lady wants nothing more than approval from
her person. She does well with dogs, cats, and
children. Lady has excellent house manners and
will be a blessing to any home. She can be shy
at first meeting however she warms up quickly
You would never know from the way when she knows that people are kind.
Blue (above) plays that he is a man of
6 yrs. He is excitable and loves to be
loved and petted. Blue does well with
other dogs and is good with children.
We would recommend Blue for a
house without toddlers just due to the
way he likes to play. We don’t know
about cats but are pretty sure this boy
can be taught anything, as he loves
human attention and affection.
Andy (right) is a 1½ year old young
deaf male who will need continued
training for a deaf Dane. He does well
with other dogs but thinks cats are a
special treat! Andy is a marvel with
children although he doesn’t know his
size and can be rough around the edges with his manners. He
needs a dedicated owner who is willing to keep training him long
after he has gone home.

Duke is an 8 year old with great house
manners. He was an only pet in his
previous home and did wonderfully. He
has come into foster care with other
Greyhounds and is doing great. He lived
with small children and was wonderful.
Gator is a
friendly, happy
5 year old boy
who settles
easily. He has
been with cats
and small dogs.
He crates well
and seems to be

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week
Animal shelters offer many services to assist animals and
people alike: controlling animals running at large,
rescuing injured animals, returning lost pets to their
owners, and adopting animals into new, loving homes.
They also offer the personal guidance of their staffs to
assist the public with animal-related issues and concerns.

Nov 29–Dec 5
Please show your local animal shelters your appreciation:
* Donate needed supplies
* Spread the word about the importance of responsible pet
ownership, including spaying and neutering
* Volunteer your time at the shelter or at one of the shelter’s
special events
* Report animal cruelty & neglect to local animal control
* Choose your next pet from among the many animals being
cared for at the shelter. They have plenty of pets just waiting.
Puppy Mill Action Week
www.humanesociety.org/puppymills
Puppy Mill Facts:
* Two to four million puppies are born in puppy mills each year in the U.S.
* Parent dogs are kept in cages their entire lives, breeding litter after litter & in most cases never
setting foot outside of a cage.
* Puppies are most commonly sold in pet stores, over the Internet, & newspaper classified ads.
* Puppy mills treat dogs badly. Documented conditions include over‐breeding, wire cages, little to
no veterinary care, poor quality and/or lack of food and water, no protection from the elements,
no socialization outside the cage, killing “low producing” dogs.
* Puppies are transported hundreds of miles to be sold in pet stores or to unsuspecting Internet
buyers.
* The best place to look for a puppy is your local animal shelter. Nationwide, one out of every four
dogs in a shelter is a purebred, and mixed‐breed dogs also make wonderful pets.
* Rescue groups exist for virtually every breed of dog.
* The only way to stop puppy mills is to stop buying the puppies.

There are so many benefits to adopting senior pets!
They have calmer temperaments and better manners. They
are less likely to have that puppy energy that challenges
even the most patient owners. Seniors often enjoy just
lounging with their family or going for short, quiet walks.
Senior pets are easier to train and maintain their focus.
Younger dogs typically have short attention spans, while
older dogs learn quickly and are eager to please.
Older pets settle into your household a lot easier. Dogs are
often already housetrained and will know how to ask to be let
outside, and cats will know how to use their litter boxes.
Older pets also are past the chewing and scratching stages
and are content to find a soft place to nap.
You’ll have more time for yourself and to enjoy your pet,
instead of cleaning up after them, attending to frequent
bathroom breaks, teaching them manners, and all the other
stuff that’s necessary when you have a youngster.
What you see is what you get. You know how big your dog
or cat is going to be, and you know his or her temperament,
personality, and activity level.

we are still

Senior pets have a lot of love to give, and form bonds easily.

Hip Dysplasia is a very common disease that affects many breeds of dogs. This disease is caused
by the abnormal development of the hip as the puppy develops and grows. Genetics are the major
contributing factor but trauma or other injuries to the hip can also contribute. Hip Dysplasia leads to
loosening of the hip joints and deformation of the joint. This leads to arthritis, pain and muscle weakness.
