people attended, with two dozen students competing for the chance to
move on to the next level of
competition.
The contest, a partnership
between Vista Center, the Society for
The Blind, and Lighthouse for the
Blind and Visually Impaired, encourages and recognizes students for
their reading and writing proficiency.
Students were tested in four of five
categories: Reading and
Comprehension, Speed and Accuracy,
Proofreading, Spelling, and Chart and
Graph Reading.
AT
STANFORD
This year’s event featured two
keynote speakers who reflected on
the importance of Braille in their lives.
Michelle McGrew, past president of
Silicon Valley Council for the Blind,
provided her perspective as an adult
Braille reader. Caitlin Hernandez, a
two-time National Braille Challenge
champion and a UCSC freshman, had
youth and adults alike on their feet
as she shared her own inspirational
and humorous insights.
Three local youth won their age
brackets and will go on to the next
level of competition in Los Angeles.
Bronwen Tedesco won the freshman
level with Pauline Ugalde taking top
honors in the sophomore division.
Michael
Chang was
the Varsity
winner.

LEAVING A LEGACY AT VISTA CENTER
Vista Center board member Meaux
Costello took time to interview fellow
board member Martha Edwards about
planned giving.
Meaux Costello: How have you been
involved with Vista Center?
Martha Edwards: I have been a
board member for a total of 11 years,
so far, on the Vista Center board, and
one year on the board of Vista Center,
Santa Cruz, before it was combined
with the Palo Alto agency. I have held
a variety of board positions: secretary, treasurer, vice president of marketing, vice president of fundraising,
vice president of board development,
and also president-elect, and president. I have continued my participation with Vintage Affaire as a board/
committee member for the past 16
years and I have also enjoyed being a
committee member of the Menlo
Charity Horse Show for the past
several years.

MC: Was it difficult to plan a bequest
for Vista Center in your will?
ME: It was quite simple to designate
Vista Center as a beneficiary, along
with other individuals and organizations. John and I gave our list to the
estate attorney we used for our trust
and wills. The attorney did a little
work to make sure that the organizations were listed with their correct,
legal names, and that was all it took.
MC: What do you hope Vista Center
will be in the future?
ME: I hope that Vista Center will have
a community-based program that
lasts far beyond my life. I see it as a
regional center for blind rehabilitation,
one that is recognized for its individual approach to services as well as its
excellence in providing those services.
MC: What is your advice to other
supporters of Vista Center regarding
planned gifts?

organizations in which we actively
participated during our lives. Thus,
given my years-long support of Vista
Center and its fundraisers, it seemed
only natural that this agency be part
of our legacy.
John Orcutt and Martha Edwards
MC: Why did you decide to include
Vista Center in your will?
ME: My husband John and I believe
that we should leave legacies to those
ME: It is quite easy to designate Vista
Center as beneficiary of your estate.
If you believe in Vista Center and
believe it achieves its mission using
financial competence, I would encourage every supporter of the agency to
remember it in his or her will or trust.
I just hope it will be a long time
before Vista Center sees this gift from
my husband and me!

NOTES
FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
You have probably noticed the
absence of color in this issue of
INSIGHT. We are printing it in black
and white — for the first time ever —
as a cost-saving measure. You can
help us take the idea of cutting costs
even further by providing us with
your e-mail address so we can share
INSIGHT electronically or post it on
our web site. Please see the back
cover for instructions on how to assist
us. Thank you for helping us to be
more cost-conscious and environmentally aware!
This publication is not only a
report on 2008 to our many friends
and supporters, but also a very big
“thank you” to them. Many people
give of their time and resources so
that we can provide our critically
important services to people in our
communities who are visually
impaired. Quotes from some individuals who have been directly impacted
by our services can be found
throughout INSIGHT.
During this time of very challenging finances, we are looking at
additional, significant budget cuts,
while continuing to have extraordinary rehabilitation services. We are
doing this through a systematic evaluation of each and every Vista Center
program, to determine its current and
potential impact on the population of
visually impaired people in our fourcounty service area.
The Vista Center board of directors has decided to put our plans to
do a feasibility study for a capital
campaign to fund a new facility “on
THANKS TO THE

hold” for the time being. We must still
be prepared to move from our present leased location in 2011, however,
when our lease expires. But, while
our timeline for finding a new location
— and the funds to obtain it — have
changed, the growing need for our
services hasn’t, and won’t!
I look forward to 2009-10 with
great pride in the professionalism and
compassion of the Vista Center staff,
the leadership of our board of directors, the dedication of our hundreds
of volunteers, and the very strong
belief in the value of what we do
together to change lives. Everyone at
Vista Center joins me in saying
“thank you,” and we will look forward
to seeing you this summer at Woof to
Woof, Vintage Affaire, and the Menlo
Charity Horse Show!

FOUR-LEGGED FUN
AND
It’s time to get out the costumes and
start brushing up on the tricks as the
Fifth Annual Woof to Woof returns to
the Skypark Soccer Fields in Scotts
Valley. This year’s doggie fun day will
offer several new features and a
famous face from one of
Hollywood’s most beloved
dog shows.
Jon Provost played the
young boy Timmy on the
CBS Lassie series. He will be
the special judge in a Lassie
look-alike contest. Other contests will
include dog singing, pet tricks, fly ball
races, and the ever-popular
owner/dog look-alike contest.
This year Woof to Woof expands
to include an Assistance Dog Expo.
While Guide Dogs have always been a
TIMMY
part of Woof to Woof, this year will
include presentations by assistance
dogs including hearing dogs,
Dogs4Diabetics, service dogs, therapy, and facility dogs. Over 40 vendors
will be on hand, featuring caninefriendly goods and services.
Vista Center is the
beneficiary of this fun
event. This doggone good
time is free of charge and
scheduled for Saturday, June
6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The
Skypark Soccer Fields are located at
361 Kings Village Road, adjacent to
Scotts Valley’s dog park. There is
plenty of free parking. For more information, call Vista Center’s Santa Cruz
office at 831-458-9766 or visit
www.wooftowoof.com.
VINTAGE AFFAIRE EARLIER
Fine wines, impeccable food, and lively auction bidding will be celebrated
on June 27, when the 27th Annual
Vintage Affaire comes to wine lovers
a few weeks earlier than in past
years.
The event will be held at a private estate in Atherton and will feature some fun surprises for both veteran and first-time attendees, includ-

ing a later start
time. But those
who arrive too
late may miss out
on select silent
auction items
that will have
short bidding
windows.
Auctioneers Fritz Hatton and
Daniel Donahoe will oversee the live
auction bidding that last year saw
gourmet food leftovers go for a thousand dollars! An elegant dinner paired
with fine wines will round out the
evening.
One of the most well-regarded
wine auctions in California, Vintage
Affaire is a significant contributor to

Vista Center. Since 1983, nearly $6
million has been raised to assist blind
and low vision clients and their families. Vista Center wishes to thank current and past members of the
Vintage Affaire Committee for their
generosity and commitment to the
visually impaired.
Patron tickets are $500 each
and general tickets are $300. Call
Vista Center at 650-858-0202 for an
invitation, or visit the Vintage Affaire
website at www.vintageaffaire.org.
MENLO CHARITY HORSE SHOW TURNS 39
The Menlo Circus Club will be the
place to be August 4-9, as the Menlo
Charity Horse Show rides into
town for its 39th year.
Drawing more than 700 of
the West Coast’s top equestrians, the event is Northern
California’s premier charity
hunter/jumper horse show.
Vista Center is the grateful beneficiary of this wildly popular event. In
2008, the Horse Show Committee
provided us with a check exceeding
$500,000, helping us to continue to
serve blind and visually impaired individuals within our community. The
six-day competition begins early in
the morning and continues into the
evening hours. Each night features an
opportunity for socializing, and on
Friday, Aug. 7 there will be a semiformal dinner, dancing, and auction.
Tickets for the week are only
$35 or $10 for the day and can be
purchased at the gate. The Menlo
Circus Club is located at 190 Park
Lane, Atherton. For more information
on the event and to learn the benefits of being a Horse Show
sponsor, please visit
www.menlohorseshow.com.
We at Vista Center wish
to thank the volunteers who
make up the Horse Show
Committee. Their boundless energy
and enthusiasm make this event so
special year after year. Mark your calendars now to enjoy this one-of-akind local treasure.

Brian Morrisey
Born with myopia, as a child Brian
Morrisey was the only student in his
class with vision loss — sitting in the
front row, using large-print materials
and monoculars to see his surroundings. “I thought I’d have to live with
my parents forever or just maybe
move as far away as Boston,” said
Brian, who was raised in New
Hampshire.
Brian has far exceeded his childhood expectations. He owns Argus
International Ltd., a Scotts Valley
optics manufacturing business that
requires frequent travel to Asia. Brian
is a trained graphic designer and is
publisher/editor of a poetry magazine. He recently added fundraising to
his list of current activities.
Brian will simultaneously run the
San Francisco Marathon on July 26
while raising much-needed funds for
Vista Center. “I wanted to do some
charity work,” he said. “I can relate to
what’s happening at Vista Center.”
Brian recently volunteered at a Vista
Center Youth Group outing – and
plans to participate again.
Brian explains on his fundraising
website that he’s driven to inspire
visually impaired youth. “I had people
telling me I could not do this and that
when I was growing up, and got the
feeling that I would never live a normal life.” He said this normal life can
be achieved with confidence and hard
work.
As a goal-oriented person, Brian
is aiming to complete the race in less
than four hours. We at Vista Center
are sure it’s a goal that he can meet.

limited funds. They set the
standard for how to provide
services that help people.
Think of what could be done if
we gave a little more. With
more funds, they would have
more services, and could
improve the strength of the visually impaired community. A more regular stream of services to the
visually-impaired will improve the whole community.
It's living versus coping.”
