Panthers Coach Ron Rivera Credits Hispanic Roots, Military
Upbringing as Vital To His Success
M
eeting in person with the
Carolina Panthers’ head
coach, Ron Rivera, you immediately understand why his players give their all for the team and
why people want to follow him. He
is a formidable leader. He is motivational and inspiring in his approach
to life, to leadership and to football.
Rivera’s dedication to the Panthers,
his discipline in coaching and his
drive to succeed have brought the
Panthers to a league-leading 16-1
record and to this Sunday’s NFC
Championship game vs. the Arizona
Cardinals in Charlotte.
Yet despite of his success, Coach
Rivera is down-to-earth. He credits
his roots with being vital to his suc-
cess, sharing how growing up in a
Hispanic military family helped make
him who he is today.
“On one side I’m getting a strong
and deep sense of family, tradition
and culture,” he says. “On the other
side I’m getting this discipline and
pride that you get growing up and
living on Army bases.”
Growing up in this environment,
Coach Rivera learned the importance of dedication, discipline and
drive. With these traits, it’s not surprising that he had great success as
a football player in both college and
in the NFL.

Historic CIF-SS Playoff Proposal Would Drastically Alter High School Playoffs
A
historic vote is scheduled Wednesday at
the Grand in Long
Beach that could shake-up
playoff divisions for all sports
starting in the fall.
The CIF-Southern Section’s
council meeting Wednesday
is centered around proposal
SS522, drably titled the “Playoff Groupings by Competitive
Equity” proposal.
Despite its mundane name,
the proposal will bring a major
landscape shift to Southern
California high school sports
if representatives from the
CIF-SS’ member schools and
section council pass the proposal during Wednesday’s
vote.
The Southern Section proposal cleared its first hurdle
in October after the CIF-SS
council pushed the proposal
through that CIF-SS commissioner Rob Wigod proposed
and has been working on for
months to bring more competitive equity to high school
playoffs, though not everyone
agrees.
“In many respects this is as
big a difference as this organization has made in 100
years; as big a change as
we’ve made in our history,”
Wigod said of the proposal.
“It’s a comprehensive attempt
to put competitive equity at
the forefront. It’s exciting, and
we’ve put a lot of time into it.”
If it passes, the proposal
will fundamentally alter the
way teams try to win CIF-SS
championships. It’s a relatively complex system, but boiled
down, what it will seek to do is
to redivision the CIF-SS’ team
sports using a new “competitive equity power ranking.”
In other words, school enrollment size will no longer determine playoff division, nor will
league placement. Instead,
each school in each sport will
be evaluated on an annual
basis by their performance
over the previous two years,
using regular season record,
strength of schedule and
playoff performance to

If you ask yourself this question, how
is my relationship with money working? What will you answer? Before
you give yourself a short and fast
question, I want to invite you to take
some time and imagine that money
is not a thing or a currency, imagine
instead that money is a being with
whom you have a relationship.
Are you friends? Do you rely on this
person? Do you feel that he will be
there anytime you need them to be
there? Are you in Love with him? Or
just the contrary, are you afraid of
him to abandon you? Are you afraid
of losing him? If you want to feel
abundant you need to look at your
relationship with money, because it
is the key to know how much money
you can have.
You cannot have anything that you
feel that you don’t deserve. It is like
a virtual limit that you set up one moment in time and it is there managing your finances and income. What
I mean is that maybe you think that
earning $300.000 is something you
can do, but you don’t feel capable
and you cannot even imagine yourself, earning 1 million dollars. First,
you have to look at your beliefs about
money, what do you think about it,
how comfortable you feel talking
about it, and interacting with it.
Sometimes we inherited beliefs
from our parents, friends or community about money. We may think
that spiritual people are poor or not
interested in money and that rich
people are greedy and they oppress
others. You may not think this at a
conscious level, but at an unconscious level there are a lot of beliefs,
never revised, stored since you were
a child and you listened to your parents arguing about money not being enough or the way it was ok to
spend it.
Take a deep breath, find a moment
where you can be still and take a
pen and a paper. Write all your ideas
about money, the ones that you have
now and the ones that you remember your loved ones told you. When
you have all the information, ask
yourself the same question I mentioned at the beginning of the article.
Don’t rush, take your time, and collect the information during several
days. Then, be honest with yourself
and see if there is anything that is
not allowing you to have the level of
resources and abundance you want
and deserve. Or in other words, the
relationship with money you want to
have.

Minority Apartment Owners Association
Holds First Meeting of 2016
The Minority Apartment Owners Association (MAOA) held its first meeting of 2016 on January 14 at the corporate offices of International Realty
& Investments. Ruth Hayles, Executive Director of the MAOA, welcomed the members and guests and
then spoke about some of the bills
that will be sponsored by tenants
rights groups in 2016. Some of the
bills included: (1) Continued work
on AB 551 (Nazarian) bed bugs, in
which they are to expand the list of
tenant rights that are in the bill at this
time, (2) No smoking bill to prohibit
smoking in rental housing and tenants want to prohibit landlords from
evicting a tenant who violates the
law that bans smoking, (3) A bill that
would require landlords to accept
Section 8 tenants, and other bills.
Ms. Hayles introduced the
guest speaker, Elsa Rodriguez, Senior Regional Planner, Los Angeles
County Department of Regional
Planning. Ms. Rodriguez presented
a power point presentation on some
of the types of violations property
owners either incurred when they
bought a property or things that they
did to their own property after they
bought it, which may have been illegal. The presentation covered the
“4Knows of Buying Property”, which
included: (1) Know your jurisdiction,
(2) Know your zone, (3) Know the
zoning code, and (4) Know if it’s legal.
Ms. Rodriguez stated that even if a
buyer is working with a Realtor they
should do their due diligence in finding out what the zoning is for their
property and determine if all the
rooms and add- ons are legally permitted. She stated that oftentimes
a buyer will buy a property with the

Forest Falls Outage Highlights SCE’s Partnership
With Local Government During El Niño
January 28 - February 3, 2016
Navy Airman Ziyi Jin of Arcadia, Calif.,
Serves Aboard USS Kearsarge (LHD 3)
Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuels) Airman Ziyi Jin, from Arcadia, Calif.,
checks a fuel sample in a fuel pump room aboard the amphibious assault
ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3). Kearsarge is the flagship for the Kearsarge
Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and, with the embarked 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), is deployed in support of maritime security operations
and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
By Mary Ann Milbourn SCE
This is one in a series of stories on
how Southern California Edison is
preparing for El Niño and the 201516 storm season.
After four years of drought, it had
been awhile since the Forest Falls
community (see map below) in the
San Bernardino Mountains had
seen any serious rain or snow.
So when a series of winter storms
roared through the first week of
January, dumping as much as two
feet of snow, it caught everyone by
surprise.
Trees weakened by the drought and
heavy with snow crashed onto houses and took out power lines, cutting
electricity to about 1,000 Southern
California Edison customers in the
Forest Falls, Camp Angelus, Jenks
Lake and Bear Valley areas.
With many of the downed lines in
the back country and snow blocking
the mountain roads, it was clear restoring power would be a challenge
for SCE to handle alone. The company reached out to San Bernardino
County’s Office of Emergency Services.
Michael Antonucci, manager of
Emergency Services, and his storm
group were ready.
“If you need some snowplows and
Sno-Cats to get back in there and
clear the way for you, we’ll do it,” he
said. “Whatever we can do to provide assistance.”

Soon, county snowplows were
clearing mountain roads. The county initiated its reverse 911 system to
alert residents they could be without
power for four days. SCE supplied
flashlights and blankets for stranded
residents, which the county’s Community Emergency Response Team
delivered. Sheriff’s deputies closed
Valley of the Falls Drive, the main
road into Forest Falls, during daylight hours over the weekend so
SCE trucks could get through.
The storm response is an example
of SCE’s stepped-up efforts this year
to reach out and better co-ordinate
with local government during the El
Niño season.
Jennifer Cusack, an SCE government affairs representative who had
been in contact with San Bernardino
County officials all week, was impressed by the county’s willingness
to help.
“They did not hesitate,” she said.
“They were right on board.”
Scot Stueland, SCE’s Desert Region manager for distribution in
the area, said having the county
clear the roads — some of them
barely the width of a truck — was
instrumental since SCE doesn’t own
snowplows and would have had to
arrange to hire them.

La La Anthony to Co-Produce Lupita Nyong’o’s
Broadway Debut
Carmelo Anthony’s wife
La La Anthony is an actress, a radio personality and author. Now she
will add Broadway producer to her resume.
Anthony, whose real
name is Alani Nicole Anthony (nee Vazquez),
joined the production
team for “Eclipsed,” the
new drama that will also
mark the Broadway debut for Oscar winner
Lupita Nyong’o.
“I am so thrilled to be
joining a production
filled with such powerful, talented women,” Anthony told
Deadline. “Eclipsed is a stunning
new play that demands to be seen,
and to make my Broadway debut as
a producer with it is an honor.”
The show, from playwright-actress
Danai Gurira (“The Walking Dead”),
is set in the violent Liberian civil war
and follows the relationship of a
group of women who are detained
and raped by a rebel officer.
“Eclipsed” debuted off Broadway at
the Public Theater in New York last
summer and had to be extended
twice because of demand.
In addition to Nyong’o, the cast includes Pascale Armand, Akosua
Busia, Zainab Jah and Saycon Sengbloh.
The show’s production team
launched an initiative that will bring
10,000 girls ages 16-24 from the TriState area – New York, New Jersey
and Connecticut – to see the show.
Many of the girls chosen likely would
never have the opportunity to attend
a Broadway show.
PLAYOFFS from Pg. 1
An All-America linebacker at Cal, Rivera became one of the pioneering
Hispanic players in the NFL when
he was drafted by Chicago in 1984.
After nine seasons and a Super Bowl
championship with the Bears, he retired as a player and moved on work
as a sports commentator.
determine what division they’ll be
placed in.
The Panthers had a losing record
for three of his first four seasons and
Rivera credits the adversity of those
years with significantly impacting how
he leads. For our interview, we sat at
his desk in the head coach’s locker
room, not in his formal office two stories up.
“As you can see, by being here in
my locker room, it’s also an office.”
He explains, “One of the lessons I
learned as I was going through adversity is that in order for me to deal
with things, handle things and help
with things, I had to be truly available
to the players. I had to have an opendoor policy.”
Moving a desk into his locker room to
be available to the players is one of
many examples of how Rivera lives
out the Panthers’ organizational values of its owner, the former NFL player Jerry Richardson. These values include hard work, harmony, listening,
teamwork and respect.
“Eclipsed” is slated to begin previews Feb. 23 at the Shubert Organization’s John Golden Theater. It
will open March 6 with a limited run
through June 19.
CCN
PANTHERS from Pg. 1
In 1997, he got his start coaching with
the Bears as a defensive quality control coach, and from there he worked
his way up the ranks in Chicago,
Philadelphia and San Diego before
becoming head coach of the Carolina
Panthers in 2011.
“I’m especially excited to join the production’s efforts to bring thousands
of young women to see the show
through its 10,000 Girls campaign,”
Anthony told Deadline. “What an extraordinary opportunity to pave the
way for the next generation of commanding young women.”
Power rankings updated each year
would determine playoff divisions
for each sport. Six different teams in
one league could all end up in different divisions if that’s where the
power rankings place them.
“Schools want to be able to compete,” said Wigod. “Not necessarily win a section championship, but
compete, that’s where every school
wants to be. That’s small schools,
big schools, private schools (and)
public schools.”
The proposal will affect all “bracket
sports,” including football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, water
polo, and other team sports where
the playoffs are contested through
bracket-style tournaments.
The hope of the section is that
schools will settle into a more even
playing field than the current system
in place.
According to data published by the
Southern Section, the average margin of victory in the Pac-5 football
division, arguably the toughest in the
Southland, was 37.75 points in the
first round. In water polo, the Division 1 first-round margin of victory
was almost 10 goals.
The CIF-SS feels it has a proposal to
solve the problem, or at least make
it more competitive with its proposal.
There are still flaws at the center of
this highly-debated proposal. For ex-
ample, evaluating a team over their
previous two years of performances
won’t move a team up to the competition level they should play at if they
get an influx of transfers. Likewise, if
they have a talented class that graduates, a school’s previous two years
of performance won’t be indicative
of an upcoming year’s strength.
U.S. actor Tom Hanks, winner of two
Oscars, said in the Southern Hemisphere city of Punta Arenas, where
he surprised those who recognized
him, that he is in Chile in hopes of
seeing Antarctica.
In a statement published this Saturday in the online edition of Prensa
Austral, the star of “Forrest Gump”
and “Saving Private Ryan,” among
other movies, said he is visiting this
city for the first time on the recommendation of friends.
“It’s as beautiful as everyone told me
it was. They didn’t praise it enough,”
Hanks said, adding that he had
signed up for a tour of Antarctica,
but whether he goes on it or not will
Sofia Vergara is not
letting anyone else
use her name and
brand.
Wigod certainly doesn’t expect everyone to be happy with the proposal, although he’s expressed confidence that it will be better than the
current model.
The
Colombian
bombshell filed a $15
million lawsuit in Los
Angeles
Superior
Court against beauty
company
Venus
Concept, which Vergara claims used her
name and likeness
without permission.
There have been vocal opponents
already, including Mission Viejo
football coach Bob Johnson, who
told the OC Register he’d “refuse”
to play the big private schools if the
new formula puts the Diablos into a
division with the SoCal elites.
Wigod said recently he doesn’t have
any indication one way or another
as to if the proposal will pass. The
council members voting on it will be
made up of a representative from
each of the section’s 88 leagues, as
well as a handful of at-large representatives.

about being interviewed and having
his picture taken, the daily said.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are
risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding
on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at
a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and
clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that
the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the
highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for
paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before
you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged
to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding
liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county
recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which
may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of
these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may
hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.
NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE
Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than
the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the
opening bid may be less than the total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on
this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the
mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are
risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding
on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a
trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear
ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien
being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all
liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive
clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the
existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on
this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title
insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this
information. If you consult either of these resources, you should
be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage
or deed of trust on this property.
Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than
the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the
opening bid may be less than the total debt.
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this
notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g
of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information
about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and
to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you
wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and,
if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this

property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned
off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction,
you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the
lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the
property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority,
and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by
contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If
you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that
the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of
trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale
date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more
times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant
to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that
information about trustee sale postponements be made available
to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the
sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale
of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this Internet
