Their Stories
T
he Holland Christian Home was founded in 1895 as a home for seniors.
120 years later, we are proud to say the same tradition of compassionate care
begun so many years ago endures as we serve the many residents who have
chosen to make the Holland Christian Home their residence today.
There are several aspects of the Holland Christian Home that make it stand apart
from other senior communities. Our smaller size lends itself to a warmer, more
homelike atmosphere than many of the larger, corporate facilities in the area. The
longevity of our staff helps facilitate consistency and continuity of quality care.
Our “LifeCare” concept provides a continuum of care for life, and includes the
assurance of skilled nursing care (at no extra cost) should it be needed at any time.
Our Christian foundation is evident throughout the Home and can be seen in our
commitment to daily devotions, weekly chapel services, regular Bible studies and
more. All these factors play an important part in making the Holland Christian
Home the exceptional continuing care retirement community that it is. But one
additional ingredient – one component that gives the Home its own particular
flavor – is the remarkable residents who live here.
Approximately 30 men and 115 women ranging from age 75 to 105 comprise the
Home’s current population. And while our name is the “Holland” Christian Home,
our residents trace their family roots back to places as varied as Canada, England,
Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Scotland and more. Resident marital status
includes those who are single and widowed as well as those who are still married.
Many of our residents hail from Bergen and Passaic counties, but others have moved
to the Home from places much farther away like the Midwest and the South. With
assorted hobbies, careers, life experiences and varied personalities, Holland Christian
Home residents are quite a diverse bunch.
Born and raised during the 1910s through 1940s, our residents have been witnesses
to, and often times participants in, some of the most historic events of the last 100
years – events like World War II, the Great Depression, and the Korean War. They
have seen vast changes in technology – from the invention of the first black and white
TV to today’s 60 inch flat screen HD TVs, from party line telephones shared with
neighbors to smart phones small enough to carry in your pocket. And that’s not even
mentioning the development of computers and the internet! Changes in medicine, the
first man on the moon, the rise and fall of the Iron Curtain – our residents have seen
remarkable times which have given them distinct perspectives on life. They are some of
the most intriguing people you may ever have the pleasure to meet!

Our Residents, Their Stories (Cont’d)
Each Holland Christian Home resident comes with a different background and history, different
interests and ideas, and different talents and gifts to contribute. And each one has a different life
story to share. But that story is not over! Talk to a Holland Home resident, and they are quick to
assure you life has not stopped just because they’ve moved to the Home. In fact some would say
living at the Home has given them more freedom than ever: Freedom from caring for a house,
from worrying about snow removal in the winter, from cooking and cleaning. Freedom to do the
things they enjoy. Many residents choose to keep their cars, continue with or begin new hobbies,
go away on vacation, volunteer and more. Some even choose to continue to work! Moving to
the Holland Home is simply the next chapter of their story.
In this edition of the Happenings, we are privileged to share with you a small glimpse into
the lives of just a few of our residents. We hope that reading their stories will give you a peek
into what life at the Holland Christian Home is like. If you are a senior aged 75 or older and
would like to know more about the Holland Christian Home, please contact us today. Consider
becoming a resident and sharing your story with us.

ost of us are familiar with
the United States Postal
Services’ motto. “Neither
snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers
from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” The
same can be said of the staff of the Holland Christian Home.
In spite of the harshness of this winter they were able to keep
our Christian Home operating smoothly and efficiently. The
Maintenance Department kept the sidewalks and driveways
clear and the building warm and cozy. The Housekeeping
Department kept the facility sparkling clean. The Dietary
Department continued to serve food to our residents three
times a day seven days a week. The Nursing staff kept our
residents needing assistance safe and comfortable 24 hours
a day 7 days per week. The Activities Department kept our
residents busy, primarily indoors where it was warm. Our
Spiritual and Administrative staff insured that all was operating
in an efficient and controlled manner. Several staff members
even stayed overnight when the worst weather was predicted.
A great deal of gratitude is due to all for their faithfulness
under such trying circumstances.
With the coming of spring we are looking forward for the

and service to all of the residents placed in our care. We
continue to operate with daily challenges and issues in order
to maintain our high expectations for care and comfort. I am
sure I speak for all the staff when I say it is a joy and privilege
to serve the Lord by doing our utmost to serve the residents
He has blessed us with. “Praise the Lord, my soul; all my
inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and
heals all your diseases.” Ps 103:1-3a
We are also faced with the task of completing our plans for
the addition to our Mountain View Nursing Unit. We are
currently interviewing interior decorators and are in the
process of obtaining the necessary building permits from the
Borough of North Haledon. At the same time we have begun
the plan for financing and funding this project. We pray for
your support in many ways for this important enhancement
and capability for our fine institution. Your prayers as well as
your financial support is coveted.
Please visit our new website at www.hchnj.org. Please continue
to pray for the staff and administration as they supply the
“Hearts to Love and Hands to Help” for all of our residents.

Joan Van Der Weert
J
oan joined the Holland Christian Home in 2013,
happily shedding the burdens that accompanied living
in her house. She possesses a refreshing sense of humor
and admits that she has always marched to the beat of her
own drum. Surrounded by many familiar faces, Joan never
knows who she will walk past in the hallways: her sister Jennie
Bouwense, sister-in-law Eleanor Kooreman, or cousins John
Van Buiten and Wilma Sikkema. Joan keeps herself very busy
with friends and family, while continuing her teaching career
at Eastern Christian Middle School in Wyckoff.
Joan was the fifth child of seven born to Mr. John
and Elizabeth Sikkema of Wayne, New Jersey. The family
resided on a dairy farm located on property which formerly
housed a very famous resident: Preakness, an American
thoroughbred racehorse, who won the first running of
the Dinner Party Stakes. Hence the name “Preakness
Stakes.”
Life on the farm was indeed busy! John and his
brothers owned and operated Preakness Dairy. While her
brothers tended the farm with their
father, Joan and her sisters learned to bake and care for
the family home. As a young girl, Joan attended North
4th Street Christian School in Paterson. Getting to school
was not a problem; the school bus was garaged on the
family’s property. Henry Hagedoorn (father of fellow
resident, Nick Hagedoorn) drove the bus taking Joan to
school every day.
Joan went on to attend high school and graduate
from Eastern Academy. Although she yearned for a
higher education, she secured a job in the bookkeeping
department of Prospect Park National Bank. Shortly
thereafter, Joan began dating her future husband, Garret
Van Der Weert, a handsome athlete and Eastern Academy
graduate. The couple met while attending Midland Park
Christian Reformed Church. In 1955, they were married
at the Sikkema family home and began their lives together
in Paterson before returning to Joan’s family farm in
Wayne.
Within a few years, Gary and Joan were blessed with
two sons, Mark and Timothy. Gary worked at the family

he hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness” is so fitting
when we think of the Holland Christian Home.
God truly has been faithful to us for the nearly
120 years that we have been providing Christian care to the
senior population of our community. We thank God for His
faithfulness, and we thank Him for each and every one of
our residents. At the Holland Christian Home our residents
are our main ingredient!
Some people might ask the question, “What differentiates
the Holland Christian Home from other healthcare
centers?” The answer is simple: Life at the Holland
Christian Home is centered around our LifeCare program.
LifeCare refers to a continuum of care. Residents of the
Home, age 75 and up, enjoy three homemade meals
per day, a full range of activities including weekly trips,
housekeeping, towel and linen service, daily prayer and
devotions, and fellowship with other residents. LifeCare
allows our residents to maintain their independence
knowing that if the time comes when total care is needed,
residents have the ability to make a seamless transition to
our skilled nursing facility at no extra cost.

All who enter through our doors are glad to make this
their home and we have found that our residents make for
some of the most interesting people in North Haledon.
Many of our residents have lived, worked and raised their
families right here in the Bergen/Passaic county vicinity,
while others have moved away and then returned to the
area to make the Holland Christian Home their new
home. With diverse backgrounds, interests, and histories,
each one of our residents is unique. They have lived
through fascinating times and it comes as no surprise that
they have incredibly interesting stories. In this issue of
The Happenings, we are pleased to share with you a small
snapshot of the lives of just a few of the many residents
who make the Holland Christian Home the special place
that it is.
United by a common faith in Christ, residents of the
Holland Christian Home enjoy the fellowship and the
loving, caring environment that characterizes life at the
Home. Life is a journey. May you be blessed as you read
this issue and learn about the personal journeys of our
treasured residents.

carpentry business while finishing his college degree in the
evenings. Fortunately, Gary was very supportive of Joan
continuing her education. After he graduated and landed
a job in the business world, it was Joan’s turn to pursue
her dreams. Gary cared for the children in the evenings,
while Joan commuted to William Paterson University. In
1970, the family moved to Atlanta as a result of Gary’s
job transfer. Joan did not let this interfere with her goal
of becoming a teacher. She managed to graduate from
Georgia State University and began her career teaching
middle school.
In 1973, Joan and Gary moved back to New Jersey
to care for Joan’s mother who was diagnosed with breast
cancer. Joan herself is a breast cancer survivor, being
diagnosed at age 47. Gary retired from Toys R Us after
a long and distinguished career. Prior to moving to the
Holland Home, Joan and Gary lived in Wyckoff for 20
years. They celebrated 56 years of marriage before Gary’s
passing in 2011.
Life has come full circle: Joan continues her career
volunteering part-time as a teacher at the same school
where her education began, Eastern Christian School
Association. Still very active at Midland Park CRC, Joan
attends bible studies and runs the adult Sunday school
program, choosing the curriculum and coordinating in
implementation. One might also find Joan in her role as a
deaconess, visiting church members who are housebound.
Two of her book clubs rotate discussions at the Holland
Christian Home. Their preferred meeting spot is near the
fireplace in the Home’s stunning Great Room.
You may catch a glimpse of Joan coming and going
from the Home. She has her own car and absolutely loves
her independence. When she isn’t volunteering, Joan
spends time with friends or attends one of her three book
clubs. A fan of the arts, Joan attends performances of the
NJ Symphony Orchestra at NJPAC and has a subscription
to the Paper Mill Playhouse in Milburn, where she sees
shows every other month.
The activities available at the Holland Christian Home
are too numerous to mention. Whether she is attending
a cruise up the Hudson, enjoying a summertime outdoor
concert or chapel service indoors, or reading a book in the
scenic Gazebo, there certainly is no shortage of appealing
options.
How does Joan feel about Life at the Holland Christian
Home? “The care here is excellent”, remarks Joan. “From
Dietary to Nursing, to Maintenance, Housekeeping
and Activities, everyone is friendly, efficient, respectful,
accommodating and always available.” Joan has a lot of
friends and remarked about returning to the Holland
Home after a vacation visiting her son in Florida.
Residents welcomed her back with open arms and many
were excitedly talking about her being “back.” There is no
place like Home.
welcome new residents
Helen and Allen Miller
In December, the Holland Christian Home welcomed Allen and Helen
Miller from Somerset, where they lived for 9 years. They have been married
for 60 years! They raised 3 children and have 8 grandchildren.
A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Allen is a Korean War veteran who
served on the U.S.S. Sierra, repairing destroyers. Upon completion of his
service, Allen followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming an electrician
and working for Local 102 for 38 years.
Helen was born and raised in North Haledon and graduated from
Hawthorne High School. Before having children, Helen worked as a
secretary for Curtis Wright. She spent years volunteering at her children’s
school and is the former President of the Pompton Lakes Ladies Auxiliary.
She enjoys knitting.

Florence Van Vlaanderen
Florence Van Orden, the daughter of an entrepreneur, was born in Paterson
and raised in Wayne. She met her husband, a World War II veteran, Robert Van
Vlaanderen, while working as a typist for Instrument Specialties in Paterson.
Married at Preakness Reformed Church in 1952, the happy young couple first
moved to Pines Lake in Wayne, and later to Kinnelon where they settled down
to raise their 4 sons. Robert continued his career as an engineer at Instrument
Specialties while Florence tended to their children.
Lifelong members of Bridgeway Community Church (formerly First
Reformed Church) in Haledon, they enjoyed traveling throughout the United
States and Europe. Prior to her husband’s passing, the couple were married
almost 60 years! Florence enjoys gardening and flower arranging and has 9
grandchildren. One of the many reasons why she is thrilled to be at the Holland
Christian Home is due to the fact that there is no more cooking and cleaning!
Florence says, “It is great! People are very friendly here!”

Life in the Home
Welcome!
The Holland Christian Home is pleased to
introduce Mr. Frank Ambrogia as a new
part-time Chaplain. Frank joined our staff in
August and with his many years of volunteer
chaplain work in various health care facilities,
Frank has transitioned smoothly into his
new role at the Home. We know he will be
a great asset to our residents and are pleased
to have him as part of the Holland Christian
Home family.
Farewell
In March, the Holland Christian Home
bid farewell to long-time Resident Spiritual
Director, Eric Fluit. Eric has been part of the
Holland Christian Home team for the past
12 years. We are grateful for his many years
of faithful service to the Home’s residents,
and we wish him God’s blessing as he
pursues a new ministry opportunity with
Revive After School Center at Bridgeway
Community Church.
John Bosch, Chaplain
J
esus said; “I have come that they may have life,
and have it to the full,” (John 10:10). I enjoy
interacting with the residents as they enjoy the
abundance of life Jesus has promised us. It never ceases
to amaze me how engaged many residents can be. I love to hear
their stories of life and the ongoing faithfulness of God which
they have encountered throughout their lives. I love listening to
their stories of home and abroad, about the iceman that brought ice
to their homes or how God protected them as they so courageously
fought for the freedoms of our beloved land. I love to see them
passionately engaged in the many activities that the Home offers
throughout the day. It is so much fun to go on a day outing with
them and enjoy the social side of our dear residents.
The one activity I really enjoy is the bi-weekly Bible study. We
have gone through several different parts of Scripture such as the
“beginnings” in Genesis. Then we wondered through the first 10
chapters of the book of Acts, asking ourselves the question “What
is the church?” And more recently we have begun a brand new
study on the book of Hebrews. Although attendance fluctuates,
the Bible studies are usually well attended activities. It really
encourages me that our dear residents still want to learn more
about God and the full and free salvation He has given us in
His only begotten Son.
To see residents so engaged in life makes the words of our
Lord so real to me; “I have come that they might have life, and
have it to the full.” We are not only thankful for our Lord’s
words but especially for His deeds. He has gone to the cross
for our sins to remove the curse so that we can enjoy life
today, tomorrow and forever!
Virginia Leach
Ginny DeBell was born and raised in Passaic. After graduating high school,
Ginny attended nursing school and became a registered nurse. Little did she
realize that she would meet her future husband, Rodney Leach, while attending
a friend’s wedding. The young couple dated for almost one year, were married at
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and settled down in Wyckoff. Ginny stayed home
to raise their five children while Rodney owned and operated Passaic Rubber
Company, an industrial rubber manufacturing company started by his grandfather in 1919. Ginny also volunteered with her children’s schools and was
active in Girl Scouts. Ginny and her husband were married 41 years. Members
of Wyckoff Reformed Church, they managed to travel throughout all 50 states
and throughout Europe. Prior to his passing, Rodney was able to meet all 11 of
their grandchildren. Ginny has 3 great-grandchildren and is still a very active
lady, traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
The Holland Christian Home
John Van Buiten
P
ay a visit to resident John Van Buiten at the Holland
Christian Home, and you can’t help but notice his penchant
for cars – Fords, in particular. Pictures from his previously
owned antique car collection, a display case full of miniature toy
cars and an actual restored and lit-up Phillips 66 gas pump are
just a few of the pieces of car memorabilia that adorn John’s room.
An avid collector, John spent over 25 years filling his
Wyckoff garage-turned-museum (lovingly nicknamed “Phaeton
Place”) with antique Ford cars – like his 1936 Ford V-8 Deluxe
Roadster, 1936 Ford Phaeton, and 1911 Ford Model T, just to
name a few. John even owned a 1929 Ford mail truck, one of
only 400 ever made. The 93-year old World War II veteran’s
collection did not stop there, but extended to include most things
car-related – antique oil cans, license plates, toy cars, and yes,
even quite a few restored gas pumps! John’s amazing collection
even drew the attention of a reporter from the Fox News Channel
who interviewed him last year. John’s story and his unique auto
memorabilia were featured on TV in a special “Fox Car Report.”
Obviously unable to take everything with him when he moved to the Holland Christian Home in 2014, John has given
some of his collection to his family, has sold a large portion of it off, and has taken some of the smaller items with him to his new
residence. Every piece has a special memory attached – who it came from, how or where it was acquired – and John’s face lights
up as he shares each story with visitors.
It’s not easy to catch John at home though. If you’d like to stop by for a visit, you might want to make an appointment. Each
and every morning John starts his day with a trip out to his favorite breakfast spot – Manny’s Preakness Diner in Wayne. A former
contractor who built his own house, John’s suite at the Holland Christian Home is conveniently located just a few doors down
from the Home’s wood shop, which allows him to spend time working on various projects. And then there are special events –
like this past Veteran’s Day. John was honored at an Eastern Christian Middle School chapel for his service in World War II. After
chapel, he was a guest speaker in the 5th grade class where he spoke about his time in the Army Air Corps during the war, as well
as what life was like growing up in the 1920s and 1930s. Sharing about his life, the history he has witnessed, and the incredible
technological changes that have occurred since he bought his first Ford made history come alive for the young students John
addressed. And while many of the museum pieces from “Phaeton Place” have been distributed, this living historian continues to
share with others his appreciation of the past while making the most of the present.
Mae Pruim
Mae Baker was born in Paterson and lived in Midland Park her entire life! After
graduating from Eastern Christian, Mae began her career in accounting, working
at New Jersey Bell. She met and married Edward Pruim at Midland Park Christian
Reformed Church. The newlyweds purchased a home in Midland Park, with Mae
staying home to care for their 4 young children. Mae returned to work when her children were older and Edward left his job as a postal worker to join the family laundry
business. The couple shared a love of cruising and traveled to the Caribbean, Hawaii
and Alaska. Before Edward’s passing they were married just shy of 55 years and had 8
grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mae enjoys working with numbers and has
continued her very busy lifestyle, working as a bookkeeper for the Christian Healthcare Center. The Holland Christian Home is a family tradition: Mae’s mother was a
resident and her two aunts are independent residents.

Happenings - Spring/Summer 2015
Anna Wondergem
I
f you look at one of resident Anna Wondergem’s works
of art, it’s hard to believe she didn’t discover her gift for
painting until she was in her late 20’s. Anna started taking
an art class in 1960, and was so frustrated with her first painting
she almost gave up then and there. To encourage her, Anna’s
teacher brought in her own first painting – and it was then Anna
realized she had not done as poorly as she thought! In fact, she
realized she actually had some artistic talent.
Anna began taking evening courses in oil painting from
Mary Luth (who later in life was a Holland Christian Home
resident herself ) and continued to develop her artistic gift.
After a few years Anna enrolled in art classes atWilliam Paterson
University. There she began working with watercolor paints,
which soon became her favorite medium, and she also tried her
hand at photography. She soon learned she had quite an eye for taking pictures. “Sometimes I drive down the road and I can see
such a great shot,” she says with enthusiasm, “I want to pull over and take a picture!”
Anna’s paintings and photographs are comprised mostly of nature and the beauty she finds there. Her many photo albums
contain pictures of places she’s visited – as diverse as Ocean Grove, Colorado, Bermuda, Florida, Caribbean cruises, and even
Goffle Brook Park in Hawthorne. She often uses her photographs as subject matter for her paintings.
When Anna moved to the Holland Christian Home almost 7 years ago, art was such a big part of her life, that leaving it
behind just wasn’t an option. As a resident of the Home, she has continued to paint, take pictures and teach art classes. Anna is
quick to say her talent is a gift from God, and she is thrilled to share her gift and knowledge with others. In fact, she has even
helped fellow Holland Christian Home residents develop their own hidden, untapped sketching and painting skills.
In 2012, Anna was among a group of Holland Home residents who participated in the “Senior Art Show” which featured
artwork from seniors across Passaic County. She took first place in the non-professional category for her watercolor and acrylic
painting entitled “Country Marketplace.” Additionally, Anna is a regular exhibitor at the Louis Bay 2nd Library and Community
Center Annual Art Show.
And as for the numerous pictures in her photo albums, Anna has come up with a unique project that allows her to continue
to use her art and benefits the Home and its residents at the same time. She has been turning her stunning photographs into
beautiful greeting cards, available to fellow residents for a small donation. All proceeds are given to an upgrade fund for the
Mountain View Nursing Unit renovation project.
Anna’s talent truly is a gift from God. Her creative energy and continued use of her artistic talent are an inspiration and a
blessing to many people.
Henry Van Heemst
Henry Van Heemst was born and raised in Paterson. The youngest of three
boys, Henry moved with his family to Hawthorne when he was a teenager. He
attended and graduated from Eastern Academy (now Eastern Christian High
School). In 1958, Henry married Judy Dyer at Bethel Christian Reformed
Church. They knew each other for quite some time as their families were
friends. Shortly after their marriage, Henry was drafted into the U.S. Army.
While Henry served in the Washington D.C. area, Judy landed a job with the
Atomic Energy Commission in the Pentagon. After his service was completed,
Henry and Judy returned to their home in Hawthorne. Henry went on to work
as a linotype operator for Van Grouw Composition in Haledon for 30 years. The
couple adopted two boys and a girl and several years later, God blessed them
with another son! They were very active in Cedar Hill Christian Reformed
Church where Hernry still attends. The couple was married for 56 years prior
to Judy’s passing last June. Henry has 10 grandchildren, six girls and four boys.

Simon Hartog turns 105
Holland Christian Home Foundation Director Richard Kuiken was pleased
to present resident Simon Hartog with official congratulations from the
NJ State Legislature on Simon’s 105th birthday! We applaud Simon on
this milestone in his life and pray for God’s continued blessing on him.
Pet Therapy
The Holland Christian Home is blessed with wonderful
volunteers who provide pet therapy to residents in our Mountain
View Nursing Unit. Five dogs and one bunny rotate their visits
so every week brings a different animal visitor who provides both
a sense of calm and delight to our residents. The smaller animals
cuddle up in residents’ arms, while larger dogs exhibit their
talents in a group setting. Either way, it is a mutually beneficial
sensory experience for all!
Bob Zuidema
Born at Paterson General Hospital, Bob was the only son in the family
and has five sisters. The family lived in Prospect Park. After graduating from
Eastern Academy (now Eastern Christian High School), he enlisted and served
four years in the U.S. Navy. Bob and his wife Joan first moved to Hawthorne
before residing in Midland Park for 20 years. The couple had three children,
two sons and a daughter, and built a home for their growing family in Lincoln
Park where they lived for 30 years. Bob was a skilled carpenter and worked as a
supervisor for Bomar Builders and J.R. Tobacco. He has 5 grandchildren and
enjoys watching professional football and college basketball. Bob has been a
member of Pompton Plains Reformed Bible Church for the past 40 years.

To Caryn Edelbach, Administrator,
O
n behalf of the members of the North Haledon Golden
Age Club, I’d like to thank you and the staff of the Holland
Christian Home for the very informative presentation on
Arthritis at our February 20th meeting.
We are all of an age where the mysteries of aging are becoming more
and more a part of our daily lives. The many faces of age related
problems and diseases are up front and personal. Carole was able to
take away some of the mystery out of the various forms of arthritis
and put us in touch with practical ways to deal with the symptoms
and challenges it presents.
I’d also like to thank you for the delicious and plentiful lunch
provided before the presentation. I know the members who attended the meeting enjoyed the lunch.
Caryn’s short talk about the amenities available at the Holland
Christian Home gave us food for thought regarding
housing opportunities in our more senior years.
Thank you again for arranging the talk for
us. I look forward to the possibility for future
presentations on topics of interest to the
senior population of our community.
Very Truly Yours,
Cathy Kincaid

Dick Van Hassel
Dick Van Hassel is no stranger to the Holland Christian Home. He served on
the Board of Directors for 11 years. He also had an impressive career in administration, retiring as a Senior Vice President for The Valley Hospital. Born in Paterson
and raised in Glen Rock, Dick graduated from Ridgewood High School and went
on to attend Rutgers University and Long Island University. In 1950, Dick married
Helen Kamp and together they raised four children. They made their first home
in Glen Rock, then later changed their address to Wyckoff where they resided for
almost 50 years! Dick moved up the ranks at Magor Car Corporation in Clifton
and The Valley Hospital.
Dick served on the Wyckoff Planning Board and the Wyckoff Township
Committee. In 1993 he served as the Mayor of Wyckoff. Dick is a member of
the Abundant Life Reformed Church. He has 6 grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren.

Ladies Breakfast
B
right and early on Saturday April 19, over 200 women
gathered at the Brownstone in Paterson to attend the Holland
Christian Home’s 10th Annual Ladies Breakfast. In addition
to the great fellowship and abundance of food, guests were treated
to a vocal solo by Ashley Santana, accompanied by pianist Phyllis
Englishman. This year’s speaker Janet Pfeiffer addressed the ladies
and encouraged them to “Turn to God in Times of Uncertainty.”
With over 125 different items available to bid on at the silent
auction, there was something to please everyone!
We are grateful for the support of the many residents, volunteers
and friends who helped make the breakfast the great success it was.
A special thanks to the Friends of the Holland Christian Home
Foundation for their hours of hard work putting this popular event
together! All proceeds from the breakfast benefit the Home’s effort
to expand Electronic Medical Records to include the independent
living section of the Home.

Your Life…Your Legacy
I
Richard Kuiken, Executive Director for Foundation/Development
magine how much good could be done if each one of us
remembered a favorite charity in our will or estate plan.
The impact would be immeasurable!
Over the years, several individuals recognizing God’s grace
in their lives have named Holland Christian Home in their
wills or trusts. Because of this demonstration of faith, as
well as concern for others, their legacy gifts continue to
enrich the lives of those who live and receive services at the
Holland Christian Home.
For the Christian, estate planning may be the most
important act of stewardship one may ever undertake. And
it is certainly not reserved only for the wealthy. Each of us is
a steward of whatever God has entrusted to us. As such, we
are encouraged to develop an estate plan which meets our
individual and family needs and reflects our values, including
the support of Christian ministries that are important to us.
In the final distribution of our assets, we can share a powerful
testimony to our heirs about the importance of stewardship.
Through proper planning, we may also provide the largest
The Holland Christian Home
contribution of our lives to a
Christian ministry like Holland
Christian Home. Planned gifts, or
charitable gifts made through an
estate, are an important investment in Holland Christian
Home and will help seniors for many years to come. Won’t
you consider remembering Holland Christian Home in
your will, trust, life insurance policy or retirement plan?
If you have not made an estate plan, or if you did it years
ago and have never looked back, this is an important
matter you won’t want to ignore. It will bring you peace
of mind now, with satisfaction of giving later. At the
Holland Christian Home Foundation, it is our desire to
be a blessing to our donors by minimizing taxes, providing
for families and retirement, and increasing charitable
gifts. In short, we want to help you leave a legacy. We
would be happy to assist you through the process. Please
contact the Foundation office at 973-427-4087 or email
at [email protected].

Every gift which comes to the Holland Christian Home
helps us to serve residents in some way. Occasionally, a donor
might prefer to give a gift toward a specific purchase. We have
compiled a “Wish List” of items that would help to improve the
