To the Spartan Family,
I hope the first two months and Homecoming has gone well for your family. It has been very busy at Berthoud
High School. Our Homecoming dance was a success! Thanks to Mrs. Santos and Ms. Steele for their work on appropriate
behavior and dancing while at BHS. The students responded well and Ken Kubik’s DJ group provided fun, popular and
appropriate music.
We are well into the fall sports season and our student-athletes have represented your school well. Our new
freshmen have transitioned better than I could have hoped! They are adjusting to the rigors of high school classes and their
behavior is amazing. A thanks goes out the parents and extended family that have supported these students as they learn
how to be a successful high school student while still holding them accountable for their behavior and academic
performance. That is a task not easily accomplished!
We are experimenting with a new “extended learning opportunity” this year. Every other week during the
Wednesday and Thursday block days, we will have a 30 minute session of time between the first and second class in the
morning for students to turn in missing work, meet with teachers, attend class meetings or anything else they need to do.
The primary focus is academic support, but there are times when meetings for students may take place. We hope this helps
create another opportunity for students to meet with teachers and keep their grades up! So, when you get that “missing
assignment email”, just ask your child if they are using their ELO time.
Please continue to be a proactive advocate for your child while at BHS. Your involvement is critical to student
success. You can also attend our monthly SAC meetings for more information and to provide value insight and opinions on
what we do at BHS. Meeting dates will be October 14th and on Veteran’s day. There will not be a meeting in December.
Speaking of Veteran’s Day, we are happy to honor our veterans in the Berthoud community, so if you like to donate or help

I want to thank everyone who helped with and
participated in all the Homecoming festivities. It was
a great week that really highlighted all the great things
going on at Berthoud High School.
We WILL SCHEDULE CONFERENCES AHEAD of TIME ON LINE - via a link on the BHS website.

the instructions on the link beginning October 14 th. You will
need your student's school ID number and date of birth to log
in. Parent scheduling will be available
October 14th thru the 23rd. We hope this will enable parents
and teachers to make better use of their time.
Winter Sports Reminder
Please start working on completing your paperwork
for winter sports athletes. Some physicals may have

Boosters Club
The booster club is always in need of more
memberships from families in the communities. If
you own a business, booster club is a great way to
connect with the community. The booster club and its
members do so many great things for all of our sports
teams. Please take the opportunity to get involved.

2nd ANNUAL TRICK-OR-TREAT STREET
OCTOBER 30th 4:00 – 6:oo PM
Student Council is sponsoring a Trick-or-Treat
Street at Berthoud High School. Elementary school
aged children & younger are welcome to come in
their Halloween costume to "Trick-or-Treat" through
the school. There will also be games and other fun
Halloween themed things to do.

BHS Catering Class

News
Please be advised that there are new immunization
requirements for the 2015-16 school year.
The BHS Catering class is up and running
again for the fourth year in a row. On top
of becoming certified in Safety and Sanitation
through ServSafe and the National
Restaurant Association, students are able to
gain culinary experience as well as learn the
basics of running a business. We are always
welcoming new events so if you need
anything from snacks for a staff meeting to a
dinner for your sports groups or other
organization, please consider having “Maroon
and White Catering” meet your needs.

Colorado will require 2 doses of Varicella
(chickenpox) vaccine for all K through 12th grade
students.
This will affect students who will be in 9th-12th
grade during the 15/16 school year.
Please check your records, Parent Portal records,
or check with your provider to see if your student
has had 2 doses of the Varicella vaccine (chicken
pox). If unsure, you can call your school health
office for assistance: 970-613-7708 or
970-613-7705.
If so, check parent portal to be sure that the
school health office has a record of both
Varicella shots. Please provide the record to the
health office if school records do not show both
shots. If both shots are recorded on school
records, there is nothing you need to do for next
school year.



invites you to attend …
If not, please schedule an appointment for your
student to receive a second dose and bring the
record to your health office so you can ensure
your child’s record is complete for next year.
Please contact your school nurse if you have
further questions or concerns.
Note that students may have natural immunity to
chicken pox if they have had the disease. If this is
the case, please notify the health office of the
month/year the disease was diagnosed by a doctor or
RN, only if history of disease is not already part of
your student’s immunization record.
Students will present summaries of their
project and be awarded a Certificate of
Completion for their hard work and
dedication in completing the Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
Program at Berthoud High School.
Do you want to travel to Costa Rica this summer?! Any
students who are interested in going to Costa Rica for 9
days with the Ecology Project International field
experience in June 2016, please contact Ms. Wold

viewing and refreshments will be served
after the presentations.

SENIOR INTERVIEWS - The counselors are
currently conducting their fall Senior Interviews with
every senior student. During these interviews we
conduct a credit check to ensure that all seniors are in
the classes they need to complete for graduation and
college entrance. We also discuss your students’
plans after high school and provide them with
resources and tips on how to get prepared. Your
senior also registered for their FAFSA PIN, their
College Opportunity Fund account, and logged on to
Naviance to review how to request transcripts, sign up
for college visits, research college admissions
requirements, and much more information.
Spartans - Apply for College now!
The counselors want to remind parents that we
encourage seniors to complete and submit college
applications by November 1st. It is important that
each student check with the colleges and universities
that they are interested in to ensure that they are aware
of the application deadlines for those schools. Some
schools do have application deadlines prior to
November 1st.
College Visits at BHS – Check out the bulletin boards
by the IMC and the Counseling office for upcoming
visits by various colleges. ALL grades welcome
(encouraged) to attend.
The Out-of-State College Fair will be held at Poudre
High School on Oct. 6th beginning at 6pm.
OFFICE NEWS
Dates to mark on your calendar:
Oct. 7th – ASVAB test at BHS: Test begins at 3:15 pm.
Any juniors and seniors interested, must sign up in the
counseling office as soon as possible.
Oct. 7th - BHS & Beyond: 6:30-8:30pm, Parents and student
are invited to attend. Topics include concurrent enrollment,
scholarships, how to write a college essay, tips for taking the
ACT, preparing to go to the workforce, 4-year college
experience, engineering, nursing, NCAA, military, and
financial aid.
Oct. 14th – PSAT Test at BHS – If your student wants to
take it but hasn’t yet signed up, they need to sign up as soon
as possible.
College Application Month
October is College Application Month! Prepare
your college applications using
CollegeInColorado.org. It is a very helpful tool and
you can participate for a chance to win a $1,000
scholarship. Here are some suggestions to break
applying down into manageable goals:
Week 1: Narrow down your options and connect
careers to a program.
Week 2: Prepare your resume & request letters of
recommendation.
Week 3: Write your essays and personal statement.
Week 4: APPLY!!

INFORMATION NIGHT
Students and parents interested in a College Now –
concurrent enrollment program are invited to an
informational meeting at Front Range Community
College. College Now programs allow students to
enroll in FRCC college classes for both high school
and college credit, and tuition is covered by the
school district. Programs include Career Pathways,
High School Select, and Campus Select. Details
about the program, including class selection and
registration instructions, will be covered.
