he past few years have been busy
and productive for Paul R. Ahr and
the team at Camillus House. The
homeless shelter and service organization
vacated and demolished its original
downtown shelter site in June 2012.
Ahr to this day faces the challenge of
“transferring both the operations and the
operational culture of the 50-plus-year-old,
faith-based organization.”
To do so, Ahr relies on his team, guiding
them by helping them to differentiate
between “what is my job and what are
their jobs, so that they can be successful in
their endeavors,” he says. “As long as our
organization is appropriately designed and
staffed, and I do my job, we will all be in the
best position to be the best we can be.”
Often relying on his training as a
clinical psychologist, and his learned
ability to understand people and the
related ability to forecast their behavior,
Ahr believes a leader must be a credible
and enduring role model for staff, and
know the path all must walk. He must
be a champion who embraces the
perceived good of the organization,
from its vision, products, services or any
combinations. And he must be witness
to the organization’s identity and help
“articulate and communicate the meaning
of the organization to its members and to
the outside world,” he says.
Always inquisitive, Ahr isn’t shy about

anford B. Horwitz has had one employer his
entire professional career.
He’s had one significant mentor –
Michael Goldstein – who taught him how “to be
a good accountant and how to think like a great
business person,” he says. “But more than those
two attributes, he taught me what it means to be
loyal.”
Today, Horwitz primarily advises privately
owned businesses and their owners in matters
concerning their financial condition, profitability,
tax planning, tax compliance services, and
representation on behalf of clients before the
Internal Revenue Service. He’s also active in the
community, and served as chairman of the Miami

Asked what has made him successful in
business, communication skills and the ability to
be a forward thinker rise high. So, too, do loyalty,
humility, gratitude and treating others as equals
and “expecting the best by showing the rest,”
he says. He also tries to not overthink situations,
instead “staying in the ‘now.’ Thinking is useless.”
All his most favored attributes rose to the
fore last year as Horwitz was at his wife Janet’s
side at the passing of her mother, Jewel.
Horwitz “dedicated 100 percent of my energy
in providing Janet my full support,” he says.
He realized time together is precious, and
unconditional love can be a foundation for
life and work. “Stability at home has a positive
affect at all levels in the work environment.”

o say Carlos Migoya’s career has
had spins and turns would be an
understatement. He began his
professional career more than 40 years
ago as a part-time bank teller. Rising
through the ranks and a progression of
bank brands such as Southeast, First Union
and Wachovia, he eventually retired as
regional president/CEO with Wells Fargo.
During much of that time, he raced
cars on the professional circuit, and later
emerged from retirement to serve pro bono
as Miami’s city manager at a time when its
budget was in turmoil. Within a year, many
of the issues were resolved, he recalls.
It’s no surprise, then, that he was
tapped to head the ailing Jackson Health
System. By 2012, he had steered it to
profitability. University of Miami/Jackson
Memorial Medical Center was ranked
among the top hospitals in the MiamiFort Lauderdale region by U.S. News &
World Report, and this year, the financial
leadership team earned the award for
Turnaround Deal of the Year at South
Florida Business Journal’s CFO Awards.
Whether as a racer, CEO or city
manager, Migoya credits his ability to
connect with people at all levels, internally
and externally. At Jackson, that includes

employees, doctors, legislators, county
commissioners, patients and families.
“Connectivity at all different levels is
extremely important,” he says.
So is a willingness to make hard
decisions. Over the past 18 months,
Jackson has seen turnover among twothirds of its senior management.
What’s left is “a group of people who
are independent thinkers who work well as
a team,” he says. “My idea is not the only
idea. I’m not a health care professional,
but at the end of the day, from a common
-sense perspective, business practices
transcend health care.”
CAREER
R Manager to Chief Fiduciary
s a banking CEO, Edward Joyce’s
rules for being effective in his job
likely aren’t that different from
those of other executives. He nurtures
relationships in the business, civic and
nonprofit communities. He stays focused
on the larger picture of his business
and mission. And he surrounds himself
with “extremely talented and dedicated
professional partners” with whom he
communicates and collaborates often.
As a career banker named to his
current post in 2011, Joyce has been
challenged by market cycles and crises.
Most recently, he faced a challenge less
existential: A move of after 40 years in
one location to the bank’s new offices at
600 Brickell Ave. In all, 300 people made
the move – in one weekend.
“It was a successful move as a result
of creating a special team to help with
the process of the move,” he says. “The
move was flawless.”

PERSONAL NOTE
“People may be surprised to know
that I work in a high-rise and I am
afraid of elevators,” he says.
Whether in the move or enduring
the financial crisis, success has come
by knowing his own strengths and
weaknesses, and having “the courage to
always do the right thing for the clients
and employees.
“If I have followed my own advice,
then I have confidence knowing my team
and I have done our best for our clients
and our employees,” he says. “We strive
to meet or exceed our stakeholders’
expectations and be a benefit to our
community.”

He’s a technologist and programmer, a
