ST. JUDE PROUDLY CELEBRATES
DAYS OF FAITH, FAMILY AND FRIENDS
PATTY CHILDS
A Letter from our Principal
DEAR FRIENDS,
On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of St. Jude the
Apostle Catholic School, I wish to express our sincere
appreciation for your continued generosity to the Annual
Fund, Endowment, and Guardian Angel Program. As stewards
of this school, we embrace the enormous responsibility of
providing our students with a first-rate academic, spiritual,
and physical environment in which to grow and learn.
We can only succeed at such a lofty undertaking with your
financial support.
The Annual Fund kicked-off with a fun “Chastain style” evening
on our field. Perfect weather, great music, wonderful company…
a terrific event! Not only did we achieve our monetary goal,
but exceed it by raising a total of $315,000.
I continue to believe that the success of our efforts cannot
be judged in dollars alone but, more importantly, in the
number of families participating each year. We have reached
an unbelievable milestone – 99.4% parent participation.
Your commitment to our school is amazing!
I wish to thank our P.T.A. for their unwavering support. This
year, by any measure, was extremely successful! I have found
that no job is ever too big or too small for the St. Jude P.T.A.
Every activity, from wrapping paper sales, Fall Festival, Field
Day, Christmas card sales to the Fun Run, was well-done!
Gifts to the school this year included an electric sign board,
3-D printers, and a donation to the Endowment. I am humbled
by your generous spirit and dedication.
Your continued support of the G.R.A.C.E. Scholars program is
a great blessing. In 2015, the number of people who re-directed
their tax liability was overwhelming! Due to the enormous
response, the state went to a “portion” formula. I am grateful
to the many generous tax payers who re-directed over
$99,938 to St. Jude School. We welcomed five students to
the school this year because of your belief in a Catholic
education for all. Thank you!
It takes many people to make our school a success. I thank
each of you for your role in the lives of our children. I look
forward to another great school year filled with exciting
new challenges and bountiful rewards! May God continue
to bless us as we carry out our mission, and may God bless
you each and every day.

In the external scheme of things, shining
moments are as brief as the twinkling of
an eye, yet such twinklings are what
eternity is made of – moments when we
human beings can say “I love you,” “I’m
proud of you,” “I forgive you,” “I’m grateful
for you.” That’s what eternity is made of:
invisible imperishable good stuff. FRED ROGERS

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
Monte Carlo
2015
Monte Carlo 2015 was
definitely a night to remember!
The law offices of Nelson Mullins,
overlooking downtown Atlanta, provided
a fabulous venue for our bi-annual casino style
event benefiting the St. Jude School Endowment Fund.
Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, parents, and friends,
we raised over $18,000. Guests enjoyed a wonderful evening
complete with great food, signature cocktails, and fun casino games
along with fantastic prizes. The Reverse Raffle is always a highlight of this
event and this year was no exception. St. Jude School grandparents Skip
and Jeanine Monaghan took home the grand prize of $5000, while Susie and
Jerome Hagley won the consolation prize of $500.
The event was a tremendous success due to the leadership of our co-chairs,
Jody Wedding and Kim Yates. We are especially grateful to all of their volunteers,
family and community sponsors, and prize donors as well as everyone who
purchased raffle tickets.

What a Year. Look What We Did!
St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School is proud to offer educational experiences above and beyond what is
taught in the classroom. Our students excel in many of these activities and we are pleased to support and
celebrate their ongoing successes.
odyssey
OF THE
mind
team was sent to
the World competition
in Michigan
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program
that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for
students from kindergarten through college. Team members
apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building
mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of
literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competitions
on the local, state, and world levels. St. Jude School can boast
that many of our teams have won at the local and state levels,
and have placed at the world level where more than 25
nations competed.
Each year St. Jude School
participates in the
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
GEOGRAPHY BEE using
materials prepared by the
National Geographic Society.
The contest is designed to inspire
students to be curious about the world,
and questions are divided into categories. Past categories
have included Cultural Geography, Economic Geography,
Across-the Country, Around-the-World, Plants and
Animals, and Physical Geography. Students in grades
five through eight are eligible for this entertaining and
challenging competition. Supposedly public speaking is
everyone’s number ONE fear, but
you’d never know it when listening
to our fifth through eighth grade
students during our annual
ORATORICAL CONTEST. Modern
Woodmen of America sponsors
this yearly competition wherein
students research, write, edit, and
present their speeches. Past topics
have included An Interesting
Landmark, Most Important
Invention, A Memorable News
Story, and My Personal Hero.

of the
is a program designed by school librarians to encourage students in
third through seventh grades to read from a wide variety of genre. Students are divided into groups of four within the classroom and commit
to reading four to five books each. Class competitions are held with
students answering jeopardy style questions related to each book.
The winning team from each class is then eligible to participate in the
Archdiocesan Battle of the Books competition.
MACHICOLATION, PEREGRINATION, AND HYGROSCOPIC are just a few of the words our stu-
dents must learn while preparing for our yearly SPELLING BEE. All students in fourth through
eighth grades take part in classroom bees, with the top two from each class competing
against one another to claim the title of St. Jude’s best speller! We routinely have students
advance past the local and regional levels and participate in the state competition. St. Jude
School can even claim a past State of Georgia champion who went on to compete in the
Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC!
BUDDING ARCHITECTS, ENGINEERS, CITY
PLANNERS, and more have the chance
to “practice” potential careers when
involved in FUTURE CITY®, a cross-curricular
educational program where Middle
School students imagine, design, and
build cities of the future. Over a four month
period, students work in teams with an educator and
volunteer mentor to design a virtual city using SimCity
software. Along the way, students apply math and
science concepts to real-world problems, flex their
problem-solving skills, develop good teamwork habits,
and become more aware of potential problems facing
today’s world, thus developing into better citizens
of tomorrow.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY
Service Projects
Our goal in performing service projects is to help students develop their own beliefs and convictions
according to gospel values. We hope to nurture their character formation so that they will become
persons of inner strength who strive for friendly interactions with others. Our service projects
promote these values by encouraging participation in various activities which foster good citizenship
in the community, the country, and the world. Each service project helps by heightening the
awareness of students to the circumstances of others.
KINDERGARTEN: The Sullivan Center
6TH GRADE: Atlanta Community Food Bank
In December, our Kindergarten class participates in a
school-wide Toy Drive to collect items for under-privileged
children. The Sullivan Center provides help to families and
individuals in crisis.
New this year, our 6th grade students will work on a
Community Garden Project at ACFB. Students will learn
about how community gardens help teach skills and build
communities as well as feed the hungry. The Atlanta
Community Food Bank provides 50 million pounds of
food and groceries to over 600 partner agencies serving
families and individuals in 29 metro Atlanta areas.
1ST GRADE: Sandy Springs Police Department
In October, the 1st grade class partners with their 8th
grade buddies for the Teddy Bear Drive. They collect
teddy bears and donate them to the Sandy Springs Police
Department which gives them to children during stressful
situations.
2ND GRADE: Our House Day Care Center
In October, our 2nd grade students promote a school-wide
Diaper Drive including basic needs of infants/children.
All donated items are delivered to Our House Day Care
Center which provides day care and support for homeless
families.
3RD GRADE: Dogwood Forest (Assisted Living Center)
In March, the 3rd grade class brings joy to local seniors
through interaction, song, and treats for St. Patrick’s Day.
4TH GRADE: Men’s Homeless Shelter at Central
Presbyterian Church and Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception
During two separate visits in January and February, the 4th
grade classes prepare and serve meals to the homeless.
The churches provide evening shelter and meals to the
homeless of Atlanta.
5TH GRADE: Community Action Center
The 5th grade class promotes a school-wide Canned Food
Drive during the month of March to help fill the shelves
at the Community Action Center in Sandy Springs. CAC
provides assistance to individuals and families in need.

7TH GRADE: Atlanta Day Shelter for Women
and Children
During the spring, the 7th grade plans a special on-site
event such as a spring Mother’s Day luncheon with activities
for the women and children. ADS is a daytime shelter and
resource center for homeless women and children.
8TH GRADE: 7 Bridges to Recovery
7 Bridges to Recovery (www.7bridgestorecovery.org) is a
Christian-based non-profit ministry rescuing the last, the
lost, and the least from the streets of Atlanta and beyond.
Our 8th grade students brought the love of Christ along
with lunch to the homeless and lost living in the streets
and under the bridges of Atlanta. Students prayed with
and hugged the homeless, letting them know they are
loved. In addition to providing lunch, they brought toiletry
items and other necessities.
8TH GRADE: Daffodil Project
The 8th grade class took part in The Daffodil Project on
December 19, 2014. This service project aspires to build a
Living Holocaust Memorial by planting 1.5 million daffodils
around the world in memory of the 1.5 million children
who were murdered during the Holocaust. The first
daffodils were planted in 2010; to date, 77,558 have been
planted worldwide. Our students added 500 daffodils to
the count, planting them along the path of the Stations of
the Cross between the rectory and school.

ST. JUDE OVER ACHIEVERS
Honoring our Alumni
Timothy Nadolski and Morgan Milton
TIMOTHY NADOLSKI
Priest
MORGAN MILLER MILTON
Doctoral Candidate
Tim Nadolski, a 2003 St. Jude graduate, was
ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of
Atlanta on Saturday, June 27, 2015 by
Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory.
More than half the world’s population is at
risk for contracting malaria, and Morgan
(Miller) Milton, a 2001 St. Jude graduate,
is working on identifying drugs to combat
this deadly disease. After receiving both a
Bachelor and a Master of Science degree
from the Georgia Institute of Technology,
she enrolled in the Biochemistry Doctoral
program at Iowa State University.
Tim is the son of Bob and Nancy Nadolski,
longtime St. Jude parishioners. He has three
siblings - Erin, Stephen, and Mike. Tim was
born in 1988 and received the sacraments
of Baptism, First Eucharist, and Confirmation
at St. Jude Church. After completing eighth
grade at St. Jude School, Tim attended
St. Pius X High School and then matriculated
at Berry College on a Chick-fil-A scholarship.
During his freshman year of college, Tim
heard the call to religious vocations and
transferred to the Pontifical College
Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. He spent
seven years preparing for the priesthood
and was ordained a transitional deacon in
2014. During that time, he assisted with
Masses here at St. Jude and at Christ the
King in Columbus, Ohio.
He was an active member in both school
and parish activities while growing up.
Tim was an altar server, a member of the
parish youth group, and an Eagle Scout.
Tim was named St. Jude Parish Youth of
Year in 2007.
I cannot thank you all enough for the
support and prayers that I have received!
I give thanks first to Almighty God for
having called me and for leading me to

Her work focuses on investigating proteins
involved in replicating the genome of a
unique organelle found within species that
cause malaria.
Earlier this year, she published a paper in
the Journal of Bio-molecular Screening,
establishing a high throughput assay that
will be used to identify potential drugs.
Morgan’s research has taken her to
Argonne National Laboratory to use the
Advanced Photo Source, working with x-ray
crystallography to determine the structure
of a malaria protein. Defining the structure
of proteins is a vital tool in drug discovery
and provides a better understanding of
how proteins function.
Last year Morgan was invited to present
her research to top scientists in the field
of biochemistry at the Midwest Enzyme
Chemistry Conference in Chicago. Morgan’s
mother, Mrs. Margaret Miller, has been
employed at St. Jude School for 15 years
and is currently an assistant teacher in the
first grade.

NEW THIS YEAR
St. Jude Technology
Most importantly, we are
thankful for the generous
support of our PTA that
helps keep technology at
St. Jude on the cutting edge.
K – 2ND: We are expanding our iPad centers to seven
in each classroom. New learning apps will be introduced
to enrich student learning. Primary classes have access
to (2) iPad carts. We are also introducing Keyboarding
without Tears for students in K and 1.
3RD – 5TH: The intermediate iPad cart is increasing from
15 to 30 iPads. Increased access in the classroom allows
for more real-time use of technology to impact learning.
Students don’t have to wait until their
scheduled “day” in the Tech Lab to complete
projects. We will continue using the Typing
Club program with students in 3 – 8.
Technology is woven into the fabric of our
day to such a degree that it is easy to take
for granted. We rely on it to communicate
and enrich our learning environment. We
start and end our day with a broadcast to
all classrooms that includes student prayers

to this fund provides a tax-deductible
opportunity for donors and allows
them to make a direct impact on a
current student’s ability to continue
to pursue a Catholic education.
Donors may provide full or partial
tuition scholarships for a student or
students whose families demonstrate
financial need.
Gifts are unrestricted and added to
the school’s budget to meet current
operating expenses, to enhance the
programs and services offered to
students, and to maintain the school
building.
The Annual Fund offsets the difference
between tuition and the cost to educate
each student. St. Jude does not receive
a subsidy from either the parish or the
Archdiocese of Atlanta. Families are
asked to contribute at a level appropriate
for their financial situation. Our goal is
100% parent, faculty, and staff
participation.
ENDOWMENT FUND giving is an
opportunity to invest in the future of
St. Jude School and an excellent way to
invest in the future of Catholic education.
Contributions to the Endowment Fund
are perpetual, and as the Endowment
grows, so does the school’s ability to
carry on its mission. The Endowment
Fund was established in 2002 to ensure
the future financial stability of St. Jude
the Apostle Catholic School. Memorial

the Endowment Fund at any time.

ENHANCING EXCELLENCE
The 2014 – 2015 Annual Fund campaign was a tremendous success! For the first time
in our school’s history we surpassed $300,000 – raising a total of $315,000. The faculty
and staff kicked off this year’s campaign by reaching 100% participation for the second
year in row by the fourth week of school. The parents’ Annual Giving component began
with our Chastain Night event on September 20th. All Annual Fund gifts have an
enormous impact on St. Jude’s ability to enhance standards of excellence in teaching,
student development, and facilities. Your annual gifts fuel the success of our Blue
Ribbon school and touch every aspect of our students’ St. Jude experience. We are
extremely fortunate to have the commitment and involvement of so many caring
supporters who give their time and resources to make St. Jude an outstanding
Catholic school.
This year’s Annual Fund generated over $315,000 under the leadership of parent
chairs Annie and Mather Lindsay and achieved 99.4% parent participation –
a school record! We are grateful to them and their Class Representatives who led
the charge in achieving this milestone. We also wish to thank all our parents,
parishioners, alumni, faculty & staff, former parents, former faculty & staff,
grandparents, and friends who support this initiative with amazing dedication!
Your generosity, leadership, and faith in our mission will help St. Jude the Apostle
Catholic School flourish now and for generations to come.

MONSIGNOR JOE CORBETT
A Letter from our Monsignor
DEAR FRIENDS,
We are truly blessed with the expertise,
knowledge, and professionalism of
our awesome school principal,
Mrs. Childs - and of our very talented
teachers and administrators. Research
and findings show that one of the most
important influences in the quality of
the education a child receives is the
quality of her or his teacher.
Our school is certainly blessed with
gifted and caring professionals in our
classrooms! Mrs. Childs and all who
serve here work diligently to contribute
that “something extra special” for
your child.
In all aspects of life, parents
are definitely the first educators
of their children – and this is
most especially true when we
speak of our faith. As a matter
of fact, parents enjoy such
an important role that on
the day of a child’s baptism,
the priest or deacon reminds
the parents of this essential
truth. In trusting our parish
school with the education of
your child [or, perhaps your
grandchild] in religion and the
core curriculum subjects, you
are confirming exactly how
committed you are to ensuring
your child has the best
foundation for a successful
future.
Thank you for your prayers, volunteerism,
and kind support. Know that your
efforts are greatly appreciated. And
please be assured of my prayers for
you and your family.
As pastor, I thank you as
parents, grandparents, and
friends of our school for the
commitments and sacrifices you make every day to ensure
that your child – and others - benefit from the excellence in
education offered at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School. As
we witnessed in 2015, St. Jude’s excellence as an outstanding
school was recognized and honored by the U.S. Department
of Education with the awarding of the coveted National Blue
Ribbon Award – again!
