Natalie English from the Charlotte Chamber introduced
Phil Dubois, who became UNC Charlotte’s fourth
chancellor in 2005. He attended University of California,
Davis where he earned a BA degree. He has a master’s
degree and doctoral degree, both from University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Dubois began his academic career in
1976 at University of California, Davis. In 1991, he was
recruited the first time to UNC Charlotte. He left UNC
Charlotte in 1997 to serve as President of the University
of Wyoming, a post he held for eight years until returning to Charlotte. Natalie went on to
note that Chancellor Dubois awarded the Chamber and Bob Morgan the university’s
Distinguished Service award last week, the relationship between UNC Charlotte, the
Chamber and the broader community going back to the 1956 Chamber “College
Subcommittee,” which supported the current site of the university. That support continues
in recent years from encouraging doctoral programs at UNC Charlotte which leads to
research that improves our economy to support for EPIC, Light Rail on campus, Big Data
and 49ers football. Natalie mentioned that UNC Charlotte is one of the top assets the
region has in our economic toolbox.
Chancellor Dubois said there would be two parts to his presentation. The first part was a
very impressive video that was shown to the UNC Board of Governors when they held
one of their regular meetings at the Charlotte campus for the first time since 1972.

For the second part of the presentation, Dubois reviewed a list of the 10 things to watch
at UNC Charlotte.
1. They’ll keep growing…………The total enrollment at UNC Charlotte has grown
over the last 30 years from almost 11,000 students in 1984 to over 27,000 in
2014. The total enrollment growth at UNC campuses system wide is over 16,000
students over the last 30 years and 46% of that growth over the last six years is
from UNC Charlotte students. UNC Charlotte projects to be at over 32,000
students or doubled between now and 2020, making it the university with the most
students behind only NC State. UNC Charlotte led the way by enrolling 2,187
transfer students from community colleges in North Carolina; 883 of those
students this year came from CPCC.
2. They’ll add academic programs…………They’ve grown from 18 bachelor’s
programs to 78; from 16 Master’s programs to 63 and from 14 doctoral programs
to 21.
3. They’ll continue to add signature initiatives…………like the Big Data program.
That data science and business analytics initiative aims to produce technical
workers who can manage and manipulate business data. Their Levine Scholars
Program will expand to include 60 students.
4. They’ll build stronger industry ties…………like Met Life, the Applied Technology
Program at Bank of America and EPIC. The Energy Production and Infrastructure
Center (EPIC) serves as a state-of-the-art research center that provides
education and applied research opportunities to students with energy related
interests.
5. They’ll expand their business development activities…………This includes efforts
to accelerate technology commercialization and champion the growth of
entrepreneurial ventures. This mission is accomplished through a number of
activities and services designed to bring innovation to the marketplace and spur
economic growth.
6. They’ll keep building…………The campus has already invested over $1 billion in
many buildings. Their last residence hall, Sandra and Leon Levine Hall, will be
completed in Fall, 2016.
7. They’ll announce their 3rd major private fundraising campaign…………They have
already received significant gifts from the Levines, Belks and Richardsons.
8. They’ll open Light Rail on campus…………in 2017.
9. They’ll move into the big leagues………..Football will move from FCS to FBS in
2017.
10. They’ll keep their costs reasonable…………In a comparison of 17 peer
universities, UNC Charlotte had the second lowest undergraduate tuition and
fees.

Luther Moore introduced Travis Vance as the club’s newest member. Travis has been
a member of Rotary clubs in Columbia, SC and Rockingham County, VA. He is a past

Everyone is invited to the (free) District Assembly, 4:30 – 6:00 on Saturday, June 27th.
The event will be held at Historic Langtree Plantation in Mooresville. And for $20 per
person, you are invited to the installation reception and dinner for our 2015-2016 District
Governor Ineke Wilson. Reception from 6PM-7PM; dinner and installation from 7PM9PM.
