Come Fly Away
Every Memorial Day weekend
the Wildwoods’ skies light up
with brilliant splashes of color
as the island hosts The Wildwoods
International Kite Festival. It’s the
largest kiting festival in America, and
kite flyers and builders from across
the globe flock to the Wildwoods to fly
giant kites, miniature kites, controllable
kites and power kites, and to take part
in various demonstrations and workshops for the whole family. Kites of
every shape and size can be
seen throughout the weekend
as participants compete in
a variety of contests —
from extreme kite
boarding to stunt
kite championships.
festivals, concerts, parades and
extreme sporting events are just the beginning.
Throughout the season the Wildwoods host
motorcycle shows, fishing tournaments, Christmas
in July and even a baby parade! There’s so much
more to see and do.

Fun
our Doo Wop island
D
oo Wop. What is it?
It’s bold neon and plastic palm trees. It’s kitschy theme
motels paying homage
to exotic lands, pop
culture and the space
age. It’s bright colors and
exaggerated angles. It’s
the distinct architectural
style that defines the Wildwoods. Home to the largest
concentration of mid-century architecture in the country,
visitors to the Wildwoods are invited to share in the fun
’50s Forever!
The Wildwoods’ Doo Wop architecture
got its start in the 1950s, when the
country was feeling the post-World
War II boom and the automobile was
first sweeping the nation. It was the
birth of the “American Vacation” and
new highways made the trip to the
Wildwoods easier than ever before.
Visitors flocked to our island and a
new breed of motels — with brash
colors, outlandish styles and far out
themes — emerged to accommodate
the new traffic.
Half a century later, Doo Wop architecture, which for a time was considered
“tacky” and “dated,” is once again all the
rage. Interested visitors can learn more
about the Wildwoods’ hotels — the
shapes, images, symbols and more —
on the Doo Wop Trolley Tour, an awardwinning, 45-minute tour held throughout
the summer. For more information,
dates and times, call the Mid-Atlantic
Center for the Arts at 609.884.5404.

History

around our island
hen visiting the Wildwoods,
sightseeing is a must. Beside the Doo Wop Trolley Tour
— a perpetual favorite — you’ll also find an assortment
of historically significant sites. On the island, you’ll find
History

were from the Ketchemeche Tribe, an
offshoot of the Native American Lenni
Lenape Nation.
the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, a beautifully restored
“Carpenter Gothic” lighthouse that was first opened for operation
in 1874.The Wildwoods are also host to the George F. Boyer
Museum, dedicated to the island’s history. Just off the island you’ll
find Historic Cold Spring Village, a re-created 19th
century living history museum that offers insight
into the lives of tradesmen — printers, blacksmiths,
potters and more — and their families — spinning,
weaving and open-hearth cooking. And in nearby
Cape May, there’s the Emlen Physic Estate, an 18-room mansion built
in 1879 and designed by world-renowned architect Frank Furness.
• The Wildwoods were named for the
dense, twisted trees and shrubbery
that covered the island in the early
1700s.
• The only Revolutionary War battle
fought in Cape May County was
on Sunset Lake in Wildwood Crest.
The U.S. Brigantine Nancy and British
warships skirmished here in the Battle
of Turtlegut.
• The Wildwoods were settled
in the early 1880s as a fishing
community.
• Tourism in the Wildwoods
began in the 1880s.
• Amusements came to the Wildwoods
in the 1890s — the very first was a
small carousel.
• The Wildwoods’ first roller coaster —
the Yankee Dip — was constructed
in 1916 and cost $12,000.

ust a short drive away...
The Wildwoods are five minutes from Historic Cape May, the nation’s oldest seashore resort community.
And if you’re looking to take in a little nature, then you’ve come
World-famous for its perfectly preserved Victorian architecture, Cape May showcases a vast selection
to the right place. Ours is one of the best bird-watching areas in the
of mid-18th century homes — now mostly bed & breakfasts — clad with gingerbread details, pastel
world — Cape May County hosts the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary,
colors and long, sweeping verandas.
An eclectic mixture of shops and restaurants adds to Cape May’s
a 21-acre protected sanctuary that’s hosted, among others, the
charm.The Wildwoods are also a
short drive from Atlantic City’s high-rolling excitement. Glittery
American (common) Egret, the Snowy Egret, the Louisiana Heron
casinos invite visitors to try their luck and top-notch
entertainment promises an unforgettable experience.
and the Green Heron. There’s also the New Jersey Audubon Society’s
Cape May Bird Observatory, where more than 400 different species
have been spotted during fall migration.
Visit Our Zoo
In between Cape May and
Atlantic City, families can delight
in the Cape May County Zoo, an
expansive facility with more than
180 species of animals, including
endangered species — African
Lion, Cheetah, Ocelot, Cotton-Top
Tamarin and Bison — a reptile
house and an aviary.The Zoo
also features an African Savanna —
a “walking safari” that places
giraffes, zebra, ostriches
and more in a
natural setting.
