On Monday, May 18th, the 100th Anniversary 4-H Club members walked
& walked & walked—we did the Woodstock & Thamesford Victoria Day parades!
We promoted the 100th anniversary of 4-H in Ontario by waving signs of the many
different clubs available to Oxford County 4-H members. This summer we will be
looking at Fall Fair parade schedules so stay posted to the 4-H Informer so you
can come out & support us as we walk by.

REGION 6 NEWS:
As 4-H activities and events begin to overwhelm the calendars of every
4-H family, with fairs and competitions and events happening throughout
the province … We would like to wish all of those youth taking part in
activities the very best of luck and to take an opportunity to express our
gratitude for those ever-dedicated volunteers who devote their time and
energy to ensuring that 4-H programs are a success. Thank-you and
safe travels!

As we head into the summer season, now is the time for 4-H
Associations to be looking in to securing chaperones for upcoming
events. All chaperones must be screened and trained 4-H volunteers in order to fill this role as guardians of our
young people. Contact your potential chaperones to ensure that they are screened and trained early!

Volunteers Needed! 4-H Ontario is preparing for the upcoming International Plowing Match and Canada’s Outdoor Farm
Show events in September in Cornwall and Woodstock Ontario, respectively and at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto
in November. We would love to have 4-H volunteers join us to spread the good word of 4-H at both of these fantastic
opportunities. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Adriana at [email protected]!
The 4-H Ontario Volunteer Support staff team is busy planning for training sessions for 2016. Please forward any ideas
you might have for session topics or speakers to your Coordinator, Volunteer Support. We are eager to ensure that
volunteers receive the training that they need most and would love to hear any suggestions that you might have.

EASTGEN CHALLENGE 2015
On the morning of June 2nd 2015, 12 members aged 15-21 from the 4-H dairy clubs in Oxford County,
along with 4-Hers from across Southwestern Ontario, gathered at the Stratford Rotary Complex for two days of
dairy education, showing and fun.
When they arrived, members washed their calves and set up before enjoying a pizza lunch and
listening to guest speaker Andrew Campbell on public relations between dairy consumers and producers.
After this, members boarded buses for a tour of Walnutlawn Holsteins run by the Zehr family near Tavistock.
Here members discussed day to day operations at the farm as well as show-calf rations and ideal cow
composition. Members then headed back to the complex for a quiz on the day and a roast beef supper.
The next morning, participants arrived at 3:00 a.m. to wash their calves and prepare for the dairy show
starting at 8:30 a.m. Throughout the day, Judge Jeff Stevens gave insightful and knowledgeable feed back to
competitors to help improve their showing and calf selection skills. Around 4:30 that afternoon the show
wrapped up, with a successful day for Oxford. Based on cumulative scoring from the competitions quiz,
showmanship and conformation classes and stable competition, at the end of the challenge, Bruce County had
achieved Premier County. Members packed up and went home. Fun was had by all!

4-H DISCOVERY DAYS –ONE’S FIRST EXPERIENCE OF “CAMP”
Decorating Beef Farmers of Ontario/4-H Discovery Days t-shirts was the first activity accomplished by 4-H
th
members between 9 to 12 years at Region 5’s Discovery Day held at the Seaforth Agriplex in Seaforth on May 30 , 2015.
The program was delivered by 4-H Ontario staff and assisted by local 4-H volunteers. It is the first “building block” of
many provincial run activities that members can participate in to build their leadership skills and have 4-H fun. In the
morning, members rotated through 6 stations with hands-on learning about the different parts of 4-H. It was a toss up
between making a snack or playing a round of “Go for the Gold” to be the best in the morning. Between afternoon
showers The Great 4-H Olympics ended the afternoon program. The six Discovery Days are sponsored by Beef Farmers
of Ontario.
In the photo front row: Erin Shrigley and Abigail Kittmer. Back row: senior member John Harrigan who volunteered for the
day and Cody Innes. The four 4-Her’s are members of the Brooksdale 4-H/Oxford County.

4-H CANADA NEW CLOVER LOGO
4-H has a new look! 4-H Canada unveiled its first logo update in more than 50 years at its AGM in Fredericton, NB, on June 11. The
refreshed to the clover logo is part of a Canada-wide 4-H initiative to communicate the vibrancy and energy of our organization. The
event was live broadcast on YouTube and you can watch the recording here. We received national news coverage on the new brand
which resulted in 32 online hits, 4 print hits, 3 radio hits and 2 broadcast hits, for a total reach of 8,000,000.
Aligning the 4-H brand has been a long-standing discussion nationwide for many years. Across the country, 4-H staff, volunteers, and
supporters are passionate about addressing the need to build a clear, cohesive brand for the 4-H movement in Canada that visually
incorporates provinces and clubs. To learn more, please visit the brand page on our website: 4-h-canada.ca/brand.
Guidelines for Use:
Since this is a trademark there are specific guidelines for use. If possible reproduce in colour. Please note that the word “CANADA” is
a part of the design/trademark so it must be included. Space equivalent to the “H” must be maintained on all sides. These are the high
points. More details can be found at http://www.4-h-canada.ca/sites/default/files/4-h_brand_guideline_en.pdf.
New Online 4-H Shop
4-H Canada has launched a new online store stocked with clothing and products featuring the new brand. Most of the items available
can be customized with provincial and club logos. Check it out: store.4-h-canada.ca.

BROOKSDALE SEWING CLUB FIELD TRIP
The Brooksdale 4-H So Cool Sewing Club meet at Fabricland (65 Albert Street) Stratford Ontario on Wednesday April
22nd 2015 at 6:45pm. 8 members and parents were present along with our leaders Laura Green and Katherine Grieve.
We were glad to see Amy Harrigan join us for the night as she was home from University. John Harrigan opened our
meeting and led us with our 4 H pledge.
The Fabricland store manager Chris spoke to us about the different types of fabrics and notions that the store carries, the
importance of pre washing fabric before sewing to avoid shrinkage, also to be cautious of how the material is cut to avoid
errors when the fabric has a busy design. Next we were allowed to shop for our fabric which we will use to make our
pajama pants project piece. Our meeting was adjourned and Chris generously handed out “sewing swag bags" to each
member, that was filled with wonderful sewing notions and fabric samples.

ANNIVERSARY TRIVIA ...
4-H started out as Boys and Girls Clubs. (The name was changed in 1952) So in 1913 the first
Boys and Girls Club was organized in Roland, Manitoba ... and in 1915 the first Boys and Girls
Livestock club was organized in Waterloo County. BUT can you name the GIRLS’ clubs that were
organized that same year??????????????
In 1935 the name “Homemaking Clubs” was adopted. Now we call them Lifeskills. So what were
those two first Girls’ Clubs/Homemaking Clubs/Lifeskills in 1915?

THAMESFORD 4-H POTTERY PROJECT
The 2015 Pottery project started with a meeting where we
learned about pottery and some of the techniques and terms
involved in creating with clay. We visited The London Clay
Art Centre for several meetings where we had a tour of the
renovated building including the classrooms, studio space
and gift shop that is open to the public. We learned about
hand slab building where we made mugs. Our pottery
instructors also taught us how to 'throw' bowls on the pottery
wheel. We learned about different glazing techniques
before our creations were fired in the kiln. We held an
Achievement Day where we exhibited our mugs, bowls, and
decanters. We would like to thank the London Potters Guild
for welcoming us into their great space and our pottery
teachers for their patience and sharing their creative gifts
with us. We would also like to recognize and thank the
Members of the Thamesford 4-H Club at their
'FCC 4-H Club Fund’ for providing funds that allowed us to access
Pottery project Achievement Day with their
the incredible facility at the London Clay Art Centre and work with
pottery creations
their talented teachers.

Where has Oxford’s Anniversary Sign been?
It participated in the two parades as listed on the front of the issue
and has spent time with Dale Brenneman, Lynne and John Payne,
at the Oxford Mutual Insurance Company and with the Phillips
family. It was at the Embro Highland Games; right now it is on
Geoff Innes' front lawn.
Look for it at the Junior Show (Outdoor Farm Show site). Then it’s
on to Lynn Blum's, the Tractor Pull (Embro) and then it’s coming to
MY house in Bright! You’ll see it around the fall fair circuit
................. and then ????
Where will it go next?
The removable base will hold the sign securely upright to travel in
a full-length truck box, or on a trailer for parade and display
purposes. Do you have an event in mind where this huge
milestone can be advertised and celebrated? If you have good
public exposure, consider adding the sign to your yard for a time.
To book, please contact:
Katherine Grieve, (519) 475-6163
Let’s show it off!
Attention Parents!
Your help is appreciated at club meetings and events. However … Have you ever considered
completing the screening and training required to become a 4-H volunteer? Policy requires
that there be TWO screened and trained volunteers for each club or event but many times
meetings are in jeopardy of being cancelled because a volunteer has had an emergency crop
up. As much as it is kind of a parent to step up to fill a position, it is not allowed unless that
person is screened and trained. Please get screened and trained for your safety, for your
child’s safety and make it easier on your club volunteers. Show them you appreciate their
contributions to your child’s club experiences.
OR … if you are unable to volunteer … do you know someone (friend or neighbor) who might
be a good fit? Encourage them to get involved. Our members could only benefit from
another adult’s interest.
If you are not interested in working with the members at the club level, consider becoming
a director. Many hands make light work in the presentation of member and volunteer
events and opportunities.
To start the process just go to the 4-H Ontario website, click on “Volunteers” then on the
right, select “Steps to becoming a volunteer”.
We promise we won’t ask you to become more involved than you wish.

And a few last words …
There’s something new on the 4-H Ontario website – you can now check your own 4-H profile! Just logon,
go to “My profile” at the top of the page, then check out the right side menu.
 Please send in your pictures. Keep in mind that ACTION shots are much more interesting.
 Volunteers are reminded to renew their Police Checks as soon as the forms are received from 4-H Ontario. Clubs
cannot be registered if screening or rescreening is not complete and members will not receive credit.
 Remember …Project resources are now available online. Locally submitted projects are listed but must be requested
from the province. If you have a problem accessing projects online please call me.
 Some projects available from the Storage area. Before you print more check with me first. Please let’s get them used
up.
 If you need any information about anything in this Informer – Just ask! My contact info is on page 2!
My apologies … last issue I promised the links would be live and the pictures in colour on the Oxford webpage when that
issue was posted. I didn’t get it done and I am sorry. However I will post that issue and this one … I promise it will be
sooner rather than later.
The next issue of the Oxford 4-H Informer will be in September. Please submit articles and
pictures by September 8th. But earlier is better! If you’d like to read about it or publicize it, send in your write up
about your 4-H activities or experiences to be included in your newsletter. Remember, please direct any questions, comments or
requests about this issue of the Informer to me (contact information is on page 2). Club reports are especially welcome.
As ever,
Linda
Answer to Trivia question p.10:
You had to know it would have something to do with either food or sewing didn’t you?
In 1915, Carleton organized the Girls’ Gardening and Canning Club; The Women’s Institute (FWIO) organized the Sewing Club.
