AN EXCHANGE WILL DO YOU GOOD
Now boarding for ISE flights to Geneva, Switzerland and Normandy,
France. At Gate C 35, ISE flights to Spain, Italy & Germany. In July,
several students from Oxford County had amazing experiences in Europe & currently are hosting their partners in our best summer month
at home, on nearby beaches & in other great local places. It’s one of
the possibilities through ISE Ontario. School year experiences are also
great. That is why ISE’s local volunteers will be holding a public information meeting for parents and students in grades 7-12 about the exchanges available to elementary and secondary schools. They are
inviting current exchange students to talk about their lived experience,
and will lay out for adults the process and advantages of student travel
with a non-profit. For more information for parents & students alike, call
519-456-5270 or email local volunteer [email protected].
RURAL URBAN DINNER
The Kiwanis Club of Ingersoll, celebrating over 95 years of community
service, invites you to our 57th Annual Bill Hawkins Rural Urban Dinner

Arena, Mutual St. Great food featuring BBQ beef & pork, silent auction,
door prizes, entertainment. Admission $35 adult, $15 child (16 &
under). Purchaser receives a $15 tax receipt with purchase of adult admission. Everyone is welcome! Tickets are available from any Kiwanian, Young’s Pharmacy, Lesser Brothers, Patina’s & Floral Occasions.
For info or tickets, call Kim 519-636-0320, [email protected].
As Oxford County has shown over & over, the drive to zero waste can
be demonstrated in multiple ways. Transition to Less Waste’s leadership at a major summer festival shows that massive reductions can
happen at events. Consider their model for your next gathering or
event. Consider too, their volunteers when you are looking for someone
to thank. The round table gathering of various charity stores to plan to
move big items off the curb, out of the dump & definitely out of the rain,
into the waiting arms of retailers & recyclers means that residential
waste can be vastly reduced & can generate value at the same time.
A chance meeting with an environmental manager from a prestigious
hotel in Toronto, - yes, that wasteful city has some with a soul – means
that we can share models where food, linens, décor, furniture can all
be directed where they are needed. Schools & hospitals are vast networks which can have huge impact on waste reduction. We are fortunate to have models there willing to share, to discuss and to ratchet up
their work again The drive to zero waste can be led by any of these
leaders, and by you. Zero waste, coming to a home, workplace and
town near you!
LEND A HAND AT HARVEST FEST
The Ingersoll Harvest Festival Committee is looking for volunteers to
lend a hand at this year’s Harvest Festival happening Aug 20 & 21.
Bringing the past to life – that’s our goal! And with your help, we can
make it happen! Volunteer opportunities are available in a wide variety
of areas, from set up & take down, to hosting activities & greeting visitors. Whether it is an hour or a day, every little bit of help is appreciated.
High school students looking for volunteer hours are welcome!

SCEPTICS OF OXFORD UNITE!
“There is some scepticism” said one community member at a recent meeting with London area officials of the Ministry of the Environment, about
their willingness or ability to protect our community from the negative consequences of a dump in the Carmeuse Quarry in Zorra Township. Many
Ingersoll & South-West Oxford residents agree, some in much stronger
words. With reason, they doubt that the MOE currently offers adequate
care for the air we breathe, the land we crop, the water we drink. For comparison sake, take the pretty town of Elmira, not far away. There the local
community found that there was “No Guardian at the Gate” after local individuals & groups had long sounded the warning that dangerous chemicals were entering the water source. Long after the fact, while the
community continues to pay the price of piping in water – their wells all
tainted – a full book was written on the story. It’s a cautionary tale for all of
Oxford about the risks of contents of garbage & contaminated soils to be
dumped in our backyard, or worse, down our well. Any farmer would tell
you not to stack a manure pile beside your well. But MOE people believe
that if they test the water in wells around the stinking pile of trash, they will
be able to tell us when it is “trending” towards the aquifer from which we
drink. Will they? Will they stop the flow of water through limestone rock
that looks like Swiss cheese? If you are sceptical of their pat answers, you
might have an answer for them. Unite with local community members advocating that Mr. Murray, the Minister of the Environment stop the dump.

ITOPA ~ INGERSOLL PERFORMING ARTS
Get your subscription packages now for the 2016/2017 season of
ITOPA! Email [email protected] and we will forward you a subscription package to fill out. It's that easy! Here's a sneak peak at our
upcoming season:
M*A*S*H A comedy. By Tim Kelly. Nov 11-13 & 16-20. M*A*S*H stands
for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital & joining it are 2 unpredictable madcaps, Hawkeye & Duke. They can’t be dealt with casually, however,
because they are also 2 of the best chest surgeons in South Korea.
They decide to wage a campaign to get a young Korean to the United
States & entered in a good school. The thread of this effort helps tie
together the pileup of comic adventures that will leave you laughing!
Always a Bridesmaid A comedy. By Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope &
Jamie Wooten. Feb 10-12 & 16-19, 2017. In this comedic romp, 4
friends have sworn to keep the promise they made on the night of their
senior prom: to be in each other’s weddings... no matter what. Thirty
years later, these friends are still making the long walk down the aisle,
determined to honour that vow. If you’ve ever elbowed a stranger out
of the way to catch a bride’s bouquet, seriously questioned the mental
stability of the duo saying “I do” or been forced to wear the world’s ugliest bridesmaid dress, this play is definitely for you.
Over the River & Through the Woods By Joe Di Pietro. Apr 21-23 &
27-30, 2017. Nick is a single, Italian-American from New Jersey. His
parents retired & moved to Florida. That doesn’t mean his family isn’t
still in Jersey. In fact, he sees both sets of grandparents every Sunday
for dinner. This is routine until he has to tell them that he’s been offered
a dream job. The job he’s been waiting for that would take him away
from his beloved, but annoying, grandparents. He tells them. Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around.
Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? A musical. By
John Powers. June 16-18 & 21-25, 2017. The original coming of age
musical involves the 1950s Catholic education of 8 Chicago children,
following them from the start of elementary school through the senior
prom & beyond. Along the way it touches on such topics as first confessions, puppy love, teacher’s pets, sex education classes & the importance of not wearing patent leather shoes as they could reflect up
under the school uniform skirt.

CARD OF THANKS - ROBINSON
How do we begin to thank so many people for so many things when
a mailed thank you seems not enough? We have been overwhelmed
by the care & compassion of the many health professionals involved
over the years especially that of Dr. Marc Pariser & Catherine;
LHSC’s Victoria Campus 6th floor Blue Team and University Campus
Pacemaker Dept; Woodstock General Hospital ICU, CCAC service
providers & VON Sakura House. We also acknowledge the outstanding care & support provided by the Oxford Gardens staff. Special
thank you to Father Simard and organist/soloist Anne for the beautiful
funeral mass. We appreciate the Ingersoll Legion and the Women’s
Auxillary for providing the luncheon. We offer our gratitude for the
condolences received: floral tributes, generous charitable donations,
inspirational cards & kind words. A big thank you to Bob at McBeathDynes Funeral Home for the support & keeping us organized.
Together with you we share the loss of our husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather & friend. We will forever remember his unending love, his great sense of humour, his strong faith & generous spirit.
As Howard was often heard saying: “How Sweet It Is”.

Cheese & Agricultural Museum is the special exhibition currently on
view. "Patriotism & Production" examines how Oxford County fought
the Great War from the homefront between 1914-1918. To support this
exhibit there will be 2 special mini events happening on the weekend
of Aug 13 & 14. On Saturday head to the Ingersoll Rural Cemetery for
a guided tour of the final resting places of some of our local heroes
who fought for freedom in the First World War. Meet at the Veterans
Plot at 2pm. Then, on Sunday, head to Memorial Park for a Pipe Band
Tattoo at 2pm. Seven different pipe bands will parade from the Ingersoll
Pipe Band Hall to the Park, then perform for your pleasure. This event
pays tribute to the men of the Ingersoll band who enlisted in 1916 and
played for the 168th Battalion, Oxford's Own until they were dispersed
overseas to other units. One, William Collins, became Pipe Major of
the 21st Battalion while Tommy Johnson became Pipe Major of the
famed Black Watch during the years they were overseas. These 2
events will be followed by the annual Harvest Festival from Aug 17-21.
Come check out these exhibits, events this summer. You might even
see a Pokemon or two. We have it on good authority that there is a
"Gym" on site. And if you happen to hear a southern drawl this month,
and see motorcoaches from the United States in town, chances are
they are here to visit the museum.

INGERSOLL CREATIVE ARTS CENTRE
Summer is half gone! Looking for something interesting to do? Have
you stopped in at the Arts Centre to see the fantastic exhibition of beadwork by the ‘4 Sirius Beaders’ of Paris, Ontario? Their exhibition is entitled ‘Definitive Designs in Beadwork – A Unique Perspective by
Individual Artists’. It is well worth seeing! There are a few classes coming up in August. If you are a painter, or would like to try your hand at
painting, you might be interested in Wet-on-Wet Oil Painting for Beginners. 2 classes: ‘Hydrangeas’ Aug 9 & ‘Forest Hills’ Aug 23. These
classes run from 1-4pm. Registration deadline is 1 week prior to class.
By popular demand, we are repeating a fun class from last season
called ‘Toothbrush Rugs’ on Sat, Aug 13, 9:30-2pm. This is a Scandinavian technique & is a great project to use up outdated fabric. Coming
this fall: ‘Pottery Studio with Heather Smit - Drinking, Pouring & Serving
Vessels’ Sat, Oct 1, 10am-5pm, class limited, so sign up early! Don’t
forget to visit the Creative Arts Centre for some hands-on fun during
Hall’s Creek Festival of Creativity!
REAL ESTATE CORNER
When it comes to real estate, presentation is everything. When a buyer
walks or drives past a property that is being offered for sale, the initial
impression or first impression is everything. A seller only has one
chance to make a first impression. Every single detail from the curb in
must be attended to. The grass, shrubs & plantings must be trimmed
to appropriate proportions to compliment the architecture. All hard surfaces such as concrete must be in a clean, swept condition & free of
cracks. Any exterior woodwork such as decking must be freshly painted
or stained - these are all common sense indicators of the kind of "pride
of ownership" that a buyer is looking for. Once inside, the home must
be clutter-free & ready for presentation. So what does "ready for presentation" mean? In a nutshell, "inviting". One of the key roles of a realtor
is to help a seller prepare the property for presentation & this may involve the assistance of a "stager". If you are considering selling your
home, consult with a realtor a few weeks or months in advance to discuss the presentation of your home. Harold Matthews is a local real
estate broker & seasoned negotiator with Century 21 Heritage House
Ltd. Harold welcomes inquiries at 519-670-6780.

FESTIVAL OF CREATIVITY
Just try it! The only expectation is self-discovery. Think back to when
you were a kid & someone handed you a coloured pencil, a musical
instrument or a lump of clay for the first time? You were so excited at
the thought of trying something new & you had no expectation of the
outcome. Did you ever wonder what it would feel like to carve soapstone, throw a pot on a pottery wheel or carve wood? Did you ever
wonder what it would look like if you tried painting on a canvas, making
jewellery or arranging flowers? Did you ever wonder what it would feel
like to try a lot of things that we think are only for creative people? Oxford Creative Connections will transform Centennial Park in Ingersoll
into a colourful wonderland full of sights, sounds, smells & creative experiences on Sept 10 & 11, (11-5pm) rain or shine. We may even turn
some of our visitors into future artists. This festival will showcase some
of the best fine art, literature, food & music that this area has to offer.
The festival will include 2 days of craftsmen, artists, musicians, chefs,
writers & historians all sharing, showing & inspiring. Attendees may
choose to participate in free introductory courses such as wood & stone
carving, bark carving, pottery, jewellery, painting, flower arranging or
just observe the creative process. You may even take a free guitar or
banjo lesson. The festival is designed to bring out the artist in everyone,
regardless of experience or ability. Whether your interest is in art, cooking, music or writing or just observing, you will be entertained. Enjoy
free live concerts outdoors & soak up the day with your neighbours!
The Halls Creek Festival of Creativity is family friendly so bring your
kids or grandkids. Celebrate the joy of learning (by doing) at our annual
festival of Discovery Workshops. We have created a collection of creative opportunities including the materials, tools & facilitators who will
make it comfortable for everyone to come out & have fun, feel new sensations & enjoy live music. Hands on discovery sessions are offered to
adults (14+), and there are many activities to enchant the children in
the Children’s Village as well. We provide an opportunity to celebrate
the work of amazing, creative people & to discover the creative thinker
in each visitor. The Festival invites you to immerse yourself in a fantastic environment full of amazing things to see & do. You can even be
part of the art - experience & engage in group art projects such as the
Giant Mural. See. Do. Taste. Be entertained at the Festival of Creativity. www.hallscreekfestival.com.

VISIT SUNNY CHERNOBYL?
In his brilliant environmental travelogue, Andrew Blackwell invites us
to accompany him on “Adventures in the World’s Most Polluted Places”.
Beachville, Centreville & Ingersoll residents can imagine this much to
their revulsion & disgust as they contemplate Walker’s proposed dump.
In his visit to Fort McMurray’s tar sands & huge holding ponds (which
leak, by the way) of polluted waters, Blackwell comes across the Oil
Sands Discovery Centre, which is billed as a “family-friendly museum”
where excited children will call “Come smell the oil!” Worst of all, the
centre is deviously clever & works. Blackwell even exhibits some admiration for the spin doctors who conceived of this place which should
be a horror show. It represents, “some of the best industrial propaganda
in the world” he says, adding “which I mean as a compliment” because
“you try writing the brochure for Mordor”. Tolkien’s place of death & destruction is familiar enough to us all that we would find it impossible to
praise. Not everyone would. Blackwell’s delightful book gives multiple
examples of people whose job it is to make us believe that black is
white, that pollution is promise, and that if we’d just go away & be quiet,
they will take care of us. Not likely. No Oxford resident can want Andrew
Blackwell to add us to his list of the most polluted places on the planet.
That is why we need to reject any idea of pouring 17 million tonnes of
garbage into our home in the same way as we would be very wise indeed to turn down any offer of a guided tour and/or sample of local
foods from a place like Chernobyl where lack of foresight has cost the
population & the planet untold losses. Let’s not add Ingersoll to that
sacrifice area, to the MOE’s “Zone 3” or the designated degradation
region.
HARRINGTON CEMETERIES MEMORIAL DAY
The annual memorial day service for the Harrington cemeteries will be
held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Harrington on Sun, Aug 21, beginning at 11am. Guest minister is Rev. Robert Sinasac. Special music
from John. Lunch will be provided following worship.

IN THE NEWS?
It’s nice to be newsworthy! Ingersoll surely is, what with the Hall’s Creek
Festival of Creativity, the massively successful Canterbury Folk Festival, brilliant athletes & an occasional argument with Toronto about
garbage. National networks covered a group heading for a showdown
with the wastrels in the Toronto Waste Management Committee. TV
Ontario posted on its webpage. It’s less reassuring, however, when you
discover that the names of allies who bring knowledge of the law and
the impact of pits & quarries to us are being monitored by provincial
government spies. It might remind you more of stories you have heard
from Communist bloc countries or repressive South American regimes.
But, it is our Ontario. To assist in making the government aware how
many thousands of people are opposed to any new dump in Oxford
County, send an email to Glen Murray at [email protected] asking him to turn his attention to the 67,000 letters sent to him from all
over Ontario and especially from Oxford asking him to stop the dump.
Were he to announce that, it would be in the news!

WOODSTOCK ART GALLERY
[email protected], www.woodstockartgallery.ca
On July 20 the Woodstock Art Gallery hosted the celebratory reception
for Visual Elements 58: Annual Juried Exhibition alongside the launch
of Cathy Groulx: Painting Life and beyond the bush garden featuring
the work of local artists Tyler Muzzin and Samuel de Lange. Visual Elements: Annual Juried Exhibition is a celebration of talent that surrounds & supports the Woodstock Art Gallery. Now in its 58th year the
exhibition predates the formation of the Woodstock Art Gallery. Out of
77 submissions, 23 works were selected by the jurors; local artist Cathy
Groulx, contemporary art dealer Olga Korper and internationally recognized sculptor John McEwen. “Being a juror for the Visual Elements
exhibition was a pleasure. We agreed to disagree on some works and
the choice for the overall winner was very easy and unanimous” comments Olga Korper, who runs one of Canada’s most influential commercial art galleries in Toronto. Korper’s impressive roster of artists
includes John McEwen, whose public sculptures are found across
Canada, most notably in front of the Air Canada Centre. Of the selection process McEwen reflects “A big group exhibition submission
makes an often private meditation or activity public. Consequently I'd
like to congratulate all the entries who summon the courage to enter
this meeting place of opposing forces.” Rising star Mercedes Schuster
won Best in Show and sculptor Anita Granger, painter Angela Lorenzen
and print maker Ralph Heather each won a Jurors’ Choice award. Examples of McEwen’s impressive sculptures are located in the WAG
front lobby and Cathy Groulx’s work is featured in a solo exhibition of
11 paintings inspired by the natural landscape. Considered a treasure
of Woodstock, Groulx will be giving an artist talk on Sept 14, 7pm about
her painting practice. In the
community gallery is a special immersive exhibition
project by Tyler Muzzin and
Samuel de Lange that explores the way in which we
encounter the natural landscape through history, art
and being out in the wild.
Both artists where born and
raised in the Woodstock
area and have recently received their BFA from the University Guelph. As a means to keep the
Woodstock Art Gallery’s permanent collection active, a new selection
of works focusing on prominent historical painter Florence Carlyle’s
time in Paris are currently on display in the Dr. Leonard Reeves Permanent Collection Gallery. Admission to the Woodstock Art Gallery is
free & open to all. Hours: Mon-Sat, 10am-5pm; closed Sundays.
THE END OF SUMMER
At some point in August, we all contemplate the end of summer, and
with season’s change, we think we might just go through the closet,
the cupboard, the shed, the basement, the garage, the storage locker
& shed & find some things we no longer need. Indeed, though the end
of summer is scarcely the time to shed clothes as cooler weather is
coming, it is time to think about giving many things a 2nd life. The Tshirt which, though wonderfully familiar, no longer fits & has a couple
of holes, could be a cleaning rag for washing the car or at home. Or, it
could be donated to a local charity for cloth reprocessing, thereby taking on a second life & providing social benefit for the charity. The
dishes, pots & pans, glassware & gadgets which you have decided not
to use again, could be sent off with a college or university-bound child
or neighbour. Or, they could be brought to a swap meet. The tools from
the basement could go in the shed; the chairs from the dining room
could go into a storage locker to make room for new ones around the
table. Better yet they could come to the Masonic Lodge on Sept 17,
when the calendar says summer will soon end, to be donated at
TrashapaloozAHA to someone who needs or wants them, while you
meet friends, learn about local groups who are working 365 days of the
year to divert waste from dumps, and stock up on things you desire,
free. For more information on TrashapaloozAHA see also www.opalalliance.ca

COUNCIL NEWS FROM MARCUS RYAN
Recently there have been reported Bear & Cougar sightings in SW Ontario. Certainly up here "in the north" of Zorra near Wildwood I think the
responsible thing to do is assume there are bears (& cougars?) around,
there certainly are coy-wolves. But we don't need to panic, people up
north & out west have lived with big wildlife for a long time, with relatively few problems, & we can handle it too. Rd 78 reconstruction has
begun. This is a long term project that will only be completed over the
next few years as it is done in stages to minimize disruption. In June
AEDs were installed in Thamesford PS and AJ Baker PS by Zorra Fire
& Andrew Stoddart’s Legacy #11 Forever. AEDs have now been installed in ALL Zorra Schools thanks to Cara & her family! At the June
Zorra Recreation Advisory Committee meeting in the Thamesford District Recreation Centre I got a lesson in Pickle Ball. It was fun & apparently many people agree: its very popular in TDRC & growing in
Embro. The Embro Highland Games were a great time again, every
year I end up spending much longer there than I plan to. The Thamesford Swimming Pool is a great success this year. There are some new
staff, lots of new programming, new convenient ways to access it with
pay as you go cards. Check out the Township website or the Thamesford Swimming Pool FB page. On June 29 it was my pleasure & honour
to present the first Save AJ Baker Community, Perseverance Award.
This is a new award that will be presented annually to an AJ Baker student, in any grade, who exhibits the quality of perseverance in any aspect of school life. The recipient must have "persevered in pursuit of a
goal & receives the award regardless of whether or not the goal has
been achieved. The award is for the spirit of perseverance, not the
achievement of goals." The presentation of this first award was dedicated to the memory of Jane Henderson, a proud member of the Kintore community who persevered both personally in a struggle with
cancer, and on behalf of her community in the fight to Save AJ Baker.
The spirit of this award is Jane's perseverance, our community's perseverance, not the achievement. Sometimes the fight is the thing.
Sometimes you fight for something because it's the right thing. If you
lose, you fought a good fight, you set an example for others, you were
true to yourself. You can't win them all, but you can always fight. This
year’s recipient is certainly in good company with Jane. The first recipient of the Save AJ Baker Community, Perseverance Award is Austin
DeBoer. Quotes from teacher about Austin: He puts forth his best effort
on a consistent basis. Even when having difficulty understanding something, he perseveres to conquer the task. He takes as much time as it
takes to complete an assignment. He will work during school time &
take work home until it is completed & expectations are met. Even if
he struggles, he does not let that stand in his way. He has had a banner
year with his efforts. Quote from Austin’s parents: This has been a turn
around year for Austin. Also, in case you missed it, in an alternate universe, June 29 would have been the last last-day-of-school at AJ... but
it wasn’t!

THORNDALE & AREA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
We resume regular monthly meetings starting Wed, Aug 10, 7:30pm at
the Thorndale Community Centre. The speaker will be Liam Kyewski
of Wild Life Gardens and the topic will be “Rain Gardens”. Everyone is
welcome so bring a friend with you & also lug a mug for your beverage.
The Green Thumb Garden Tour that was held on June 25 was a very
successful fundraiser. Thank you to the business community for sponsoring the event which allows us to continue with projects in the village
of Thorndale. Of course the event needed host gardeners who allowed
us to come into their gardens. Thank you. Also, thank you to the many
volunteers who helped out at the gardens. The weather was great
which also helped with the attendance. For information about the meeting call Shirley 519-461-0855 or email [email protected].

KNOX UNITED CHURCH, EMBRO
We are open throughout August with services at 10:30am led by Rev
Andrea Allen. You are welcome to slide into a pew & worship with us.
Our Sunday Service is one hour, never longer, and offers a chance to
reflect & know a loving God. While all is calm upstairs, our major renovations in the lower level are in full swing as we ready our building to
better serve the community of Zorra. We are called to be a caring people & our ongoing mission & outreach work focuses on local & international. We encourage everyone to ask for just 25 cents to be added at
checkout in Oxford county grocery & drug stores to help with Operation
Sharing. Our Sow A Row campaign supports the Canadian Foodgrains
Project, that helps feed needy people in developing countries. As you
read this, our Vacation Bible Event will have come & gone, and many
children will have had fun & togetherness for a week. Remember, our
little streetside library is brimming with books for adults & children, free
to take, exchange. Already, the collection is changing week by week
as people stop by & make use of this village reading spot curbside at
the church.
