Fresh from her success at Danish National Opera, Claudia Boyle, one of Ireland’s
brightest soprano stars, takes a break from her busy international schedule
working with luminaries such as Joseph Calleja, Kent Nagano, James Conlon and
Ricardo Muti, to return for a solo evening of heavenly opera and dazzling singing
with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. The evening presents some of the very
best of Italian, French and American opera, including rousing overtures, Massenet’s
hypnotically lyrical ‘Méditation’ (Thaïs), the dramatic ‘Mad Scene’ from Donizetti’s
Lucia di Lammermoor, Verdi’s spirited ‘Sempre libera’ (La traviata) and bewitching
‘Caro nome’ (Rigoletto), the sublime ‘Depuis le jour’ (Charpentier’s Louise) and
Bernstein’s delightfully carefree ‘Glitter and be gay’ (Candide).

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra Leader Helena Wood steps into the soloist’s
spotlight to launch the orchestra’s lunchtime concert series in style with four
fabulous works showcasing the many virtues of the violin. There’s poetry and power
aplenty in Mozart’s yearning Adagio and sprightly Allegretto grazioso, and in the
sweetly nostalgic Mélodie and vivacious Scherzo from Tchaikovsky’s Memory of
a Dear Place. No less evocative are the colourful Overture to Weber’s Oberon,
Anatoli Liadov’s magical and mysterious The Enchanted Lake and the scintillating
Masquerade Suite by Khachaturian.

The young Hungarian baritone Gyula Nagy has been making a name for himself
as an Opera Theatre Company ‘Young Artist’. For his concert debut with the RTÉ
National Symphony Orchestra, he tackles three formidable and varied characters:
Mozart’s fickle and scheming Count Almaviva, Verdi’s loyal but doomed Marquis
de Posa and Borodin’s heroic Prince Igor. Adding lustre to baritonal burnish are
orchestral favourites by Suppé (the robustly romantic Poet and Peasant Overture),
Puccini (Manon Lescaut’s luscious Intermezzo), Shostakovich (The Gadfly’s
swooning Romance) and Tchaikovsky (the ever-delightful Waltz of the Flowers
from The Nutcracker).

When Sir James Galway and
I first spoke of working together
towards the birth of a new flute
concerto, we wanted to link
our two native cities.

Belfast and Limerick are renowned respectively for their linen and lace
and it was a beautiful image in “An Unborn Child” by the Belfast poet
Derek Mahon which lubricated my imagination. The child, awaiting its
birth, muses on the mysteries relayed “through the dark network” of
its mother’s body as she sews in expectation of the infant arrival.
I pictured her fingering the filigree of Limerick Lace
and grasping the supple strength of Belfast Linen.
Somehow this image, and the anticipatory life of the womb,
became the affirmative force which inspired this piece.

composer Bill Whelan.
Featuring the world premiere performances of Linen and Lace, Whelan’s new flute
concerto for the internationally renowned flautist, Sir James Galway and symphony
orchestra, commissioned by RTÉ lyric fm to mark Limerick City of Culture, together
with some of Whelan’s most popular music: the colourful and dynamic Riverdance
Symphonic Suite, the evocative Inishlacken and the exhilarating An Chistín from the
Connemara Suite, Whelan’s playful interaction between fiddle, feet and orchestra.

showcases the vibrant attractions of an instrument currently enjoying renewed
popularity. In a colourful recital of heated passions and virtuosic flair, Luis Bacalov’s
enchanting theme to the hit romantic comedy film Il Postino gives hope to all wouldbe lovers, while Monti’s re-working of Hungarian folk themes and the haunting
Oblivion and opulent Libertango of Astor Piazzolla reveal the accordion’s surprising
gift for emotion. Abreu’s irresistibly happy Tico-Tico no Fubá and Spanish fantasies
from Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov add irresistible Iberian sunlight and warmth.

The wide-ranging The Beethoven Project, presented by the Royal Irish Academy of
Music, reaches a magnificently imposing finale with three epic, revelatory works
stamped through with all the brilliance and boldness associated with one of the truly
great composers. Local keyboard legend John O’Conor joins the RTÉ National
Symphony Orchestra and the orchestra’s former Principal Conductor Gerhard Markson
for the game-changing ‘Emperor’ Concerto – a heroic battle of wills between piano
and orchestra – while the dramatic Egmont Overture and thunderous Fifth Symphony
move rousingly from darkness to light with monumental force.

Clonmel-born soprano Kelley Lonergan, winner of the 2013 RDS Music Bursary
and an Opera Theatre Company Young Artist, places emotion to the fore in her
concert debut with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Be entranced by the
beautiful, bewitching delicacies of Puccini’s ‘Si, mi chiamano Mimì’ and ‘Donde
lieta usci’ (La bohème), the exalted turmoil of Leoncavallo’s ‘Stridono lassù’
(Pagliacci) and the sweetly fervent ‘Lo son l’umile ancella’ from Cilea’s Adriana
Lecouvrer. Swoon to Puccini’s aromatic Chrysanthemums and become a child again
in the wonders of Respighi’s richly coloured and event-filled Magic Toy Shop.

Acclaimed American conductor Andrew Litton makes a welcome return on
Independence Day with a quartet of works celebrating America the bold and the
brave. Copland’s An Outdoor Overture is a gently heroic tribute to the frontier spirit,
Gershwin’s jazz-infused Rhapsody in Blue a euphoric celebration of city life, Barber’s
heart-stopping Adagio for Strings, popularised in the films The Elephant Man and
Platoon, a deeply felt expression of grief. Dvorák’s From the New World (taken by
Neil Armstrong to the Moon on board Apollo 11) proves a glorious hymnal to
America’s spirit and soul.

Schubert’s mighty ‘Unfinished’ Symphony ushered in the Romantic era with music
that is by turns, bittersweet, brooding and bold – qualities the Viennese audience
at its premiere relished and that sublimely echo Mozart’s ‘Elvira Madigan’
(popularised by the 1967 Swedish film of the same name), a serenely beautiful
concerto brimming with exquisite melodies. And although the sumptuous Emperor
Waltz underlines why the younger Johann Strauss will forever be known as ‘The
Waltz King’, his sparkling polkas and rapturous overture to Die Fledermaus are
Viennese music-making at its most ornate and delectable. To conclude, clap the
RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra to a well-earned summer break with Johann
Strauss Senior’s thrilling Radetzky March.
