Saint Mary Messenger | Summer 2016
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Alum, Friends of
St. Mary Interparochial School,
In this summer of Republican vs. Democrat,
Trump vs. Clinton, can we all agree that the 2015-2016
school year was a challenging one?
In our own school, we experienced the
joys of scholarship, sportsmanship, and a
Volleyball championship. Our hearts were
bursting with pride. We also experienced
the great loss of a beloved teacher, Miss
Dunn. Our hearts were broken. So much
happiness, so much sadness.
But, we do celebrate . . .
. . . the historic visit of Pope Francis to our
beloved City of Philadelphia!
. . . St. Mary graduates who will be attending Bishop Eustace, Hallahan, Merion Mercy
Academy, Father Judge, Archbishop Carroll,
Nazareth Academy, Roman Catholic, and St.
Joseph Prep in the Fall, having earned close
to $500,000 in high school scholarships.
Congratulations!
. . . St. Mary students in grades 3 – 7, who
excelled in their Terra Nova Standardized
Testing in March. Congratulations!
. . . Our second and third graders who
received Holy Communion for the first time
this spring at their home parishes.
God bless you!
Our continued goal as a school community is
to educate children in our Catholic faith and
in academics to prepare students for college
and career in the 21st century. We are proud
to teach Religion through coursework and
through service to each of our students.
Students participate in several service
opportunities to show how we put our
Catholic ideals into practice. We will
continue with service-learning in 2016-2017.
This past year, through our STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)
program, and through Jr. Science Explorers,
students in all grades had the opportunity
to “play with Science” and to make it their
own. Once again, older students built
robots that could explore a pool bottom,
running through an obstacle course to
retrieve objects on a pool floor and return
them to the surface of the water. Pretty
impressive! Another group of students
worked on a boat building project at the
Seaport Museum, every week, for over
30 weeks. In early June, the boats were
launched and stayed afloat and have
become part of the Seaport Museum’s fleet
of paddle boats. Our new Junior Explorers
Program, an after-school enrichment
program for students in Grades K-4,
provided an opportunity for exploration in
architecture, light, balance and much more.
This program was a huge hit amongst our
younger students.
STEAM Robotics
We thank you for continuing to support
St. Mary Interparochial School so that we
can provide the opportunities for students
to expand their horizons and to explore
possibilities for their future endeavors.
God bless you and yours. Let us continue
to pray for one another.

program at Independence Seaport Museum

Board of Limited Jurisdiction 2016-17
On behalf of the Board, thank you once
again for your assistance, participation, and
feedback in assisting the Steering Committee and Board as we prepared the Strategic
Plan for 2015-2020. The official Strategic
Plan, which includes our six ambitious goals
with detailed action steps, may be found on
our website at www.saintmarys.us.
In this transitional year, we are happy to
announce that our governance has successfully moved from an Advisory Board to a
Board of Limited Jurisdiction which notably
makes us one of the first elementary schools
in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia
to achieve this level of governance. The
Board has been working faithfully on our
strategic goals and will summarize all work
completed over the summer months.
Our mission along with faculty, staff,
students, and parents, remains to challenge
our diverse student body to grow morally,
academically, and socially into passionate,
confident, and Christ-centered leaders of the
21st century.
The graduates of St. Mary Interparochial
School will be grounded in the Catholic
faith and prepared fully to enter a selective
secondary school. They will think critically
and possess the ability for lifelong learning.
They will be compassionate and serviceoriented. This is our shared vision with the
St. Mary School Community!
Again, we thank you, for your prayers and
support as we work together to achieve
our goals.

14th Annual Walkathon:
Supporting Art, Music, Language, and Culture Education for our Children
Over $46,000 was raised through our
Walkathon to support our school’s Art,
Music, and Language Studies program.
Our children are so much richer from being
exposed to the arts. Special thanks to those
many families that embraced our fundraising
effort. Our walk celebrated lesser known, but
important Firsts of Philadelphia. A beautiful
day for a great walk!
On behalf of those who benefit from this
fundraiser, thank you to the St. Mary
Community for making this campaign so
very successful. Thank You to our parents
for setting a great example of St. Mary spirit
and stewardship. Nice job, kids!
WE THANK YOU! A complete list of supporters will be acknowledged in our 2016-2017
Annual Report.
The students genuinely personalized letters
to their loved ones and the response was
extraordinary. St. Mary
prominently displayed
the ‘Bricks’ with donors’
names around the school
to acknowledge their generosity. Congratulations
to Franklin Perry for being
our Grand Prize Earner!
Special thanks to our Walkathon Event
Sponsors: Alusiv Design, Anesthesia

Storm Report: Sports Night
Celebrating the 2015/16 St. Mary’s Sports Teams
On May 24, 2016 St. Mary held its annual
Sports Night in which we recognize the
efforts and achievements of our studentathletes, our coaches and the other people
who made this year such a wonderful year
for Saint Mary’s Athletics. The entire evening
was a great opportunity to celebrate the
spirit and sense of community that we enjoy
at Saint Mary’s.
We opened the evening with a moment of
silence and prayer in memory of Miss Dunn,
who was always a steadfast supporter of our
student-athletes and whose “Good, better,
best...” motto inspires in sports as well as in
the classroom.
Volleyball White Team
Volleyball Maroon Team: Region 6 CYO Champions
Varsity Boys Basketball
JV Girls Basketball
All of our student athletes were introduced
by their coaches and awarded a Certificate
for their participation and Achievement in
Athletics.
Our Region 6 CYO Volleyball Champions were
recognized with commemorative t-shirts
donated by a mystery benefactor and Coach
Isaacson unfurling a championship banner
which will hang in Shot Tower gym.
Varsity Girls 8th Grade Basketball
Varsity Girls 7th Grade Basketball
We also recognized our Region 6 CYO
Basketball All Stars, each of whom received
an All Star Certificate. In the start of a new
Saint Mary’s tradition, we awarded Varsity
Letter patches to our graduating athletes,
courtesy of our friends at Home and School.
There are many people to thank for the
success of Athletics this year:
Mrs. Meredith for supporting Athletics and
allowing us to grow the Program;
Mrs. Haciski, for being a huge booster of
Athletics and always getting our news out
there to the community;
The Home and School Association which
has steadfastly supported Athletics both
financially and with coordinating our efforts;
JV Boys Basketball
Our coaches, Keith Czaja, Jackie Urbine,
Steve Sims, Tommy DelGuercio, Jenifer
DiCampli, Elizabeth Fahncke, and Chris
Isaacson, each of whom gives of their time
and talents to inspire and teach our kids the
values of sportsmanship and teamwork that
last a lifetime.
Special thanks to our Athletic Director
Mr. Harry Kane for supporting and
strengthening our Athletic Program.
Most importantly, thank you to our athletes
and their families who go the extra mile to
play on and cheer on our teams.
Let’s Go Storm!!

Margaret R. Dunn: “Our Miss Dunn”
September 4, 1950 - May 23, 2016
Our “Miss Dunn” passed away
on a beautiful May day, about five
weeks after she had a stroke.
Her family and friends mourn her
as does the St. Mary Interparochial
School Community.
For 29 years, Miss Dunn taught
students at St. Mary. She arrived
with 18 years experience in other
Philadelphia Catholic schools
and taught here in grades 5 – 8
for all of those years.
Miss Dunn often told the story of interviewing for her first teaching job, wearing her St.
Maria Goretti High School uniform. She was
what were then called “The Cadets”, young
men and women who, with one Math course
and one Reading course under their belts,
began to teach in Catholic grade schools the
fall after they graduated high school. There
was a need and Margie responded. She
always knew she wanted to be a teacher and
here was her opportunity. For the Cadets,
life was not easy. In addition to teaching
each day and preparing for classes each
weekend, they attended evening classes
to complete their undergraduate work. For
many Cadets, this took 8 to 10 years at night.
She, like many Cadets who worked in the
late 1960s, was frequently paid in cash on a
Monday, after the collection was taken up in
church on Sunday. It was quite remarkable.
What Miss Dunn brought to the students at
St. Mary (and I am sure to all the students
she met in her career) was a sense of deep
faith, of purpose, and of scholarship. If you
are going to do something, do it well.
Don’t waste the talents God has given you.
Give your best every day. “Good, Better,
Best, never let it rest, until the Good is Better
and the Better is Best!” - St. Jerome
Our school has experienced a great loss in
the death of Miss Dunn, but she would want
us to keep moving forward, doing our best
each day, recognizing the God-given talents
that we all have and using them well.
Our school has also experienced a great love
in the life of Miss Margaret Rose Dunn. We
will remember her always and we will dedicate our next school year to her memory.
May she rest in peace. Amen.
In keeping with her love of education the
“Margaret Dunn Scholarship” has been
established c/o St. Mary’s Interparochial
School (5th & Locust St. Phila PA 19106).

The rich academic and historic heritage of St. Mary Interparochial
School dates to the early days of Philadelphia, as Catholics and
Protestants engaged in a spirited debate over educational practices.
Founded in 1782 by the Jesuit fathers of Old St. Joseph’s Church, St.
Mary is known as “The Mother School” of catholic parochial education
and is credited with influencing Catholic educational patterns in this
country. Situated near Independence Hall and other pivotal sites in old
Philadelphia, it served children for more than a century before closing
in 1902 after a devastating fire. St. Mary’s reopened in 1968, again
with a distinction: With students drawn from six different parishes, it
was the first interparochial school in the nation. St. Mary Interparochial School is situated in Independence National Park and serves over
250 children from all over the City of Philadelphia and its suburbs.
