I am pleased and PROUD to have been elected as your President for the next two years. Don and Bev Montgomery are to be congratulated for a great 2008 convention and setting the mark high for future organizers. I would like to thank Wayne Orsten for his hard work and dedication to our organization as President, his years as a director, and his continuing support as our liaison with AMVIC. Wayne has been and continues to be a grea ambassador for our Industry. If there is such a thing as a legacy from this posting for Wayne, it is the $30,200 cheque that he presented on our behalf to the Canadian Cancer Society. I repeat the words of the Society: "Thank you for the GREAT work done" to Wayne, Dale, Delton, Robert and each and every person that sold a picture for this very worthwhile charity. We now move into our 75th year. Let's make the celebration equal to the longevity of the organization and work diligently to increase the amount we give to the Canadian Cancer Society. Plus, let's strive for a very special convention in February 2009, which marks our 75th Anniversary "THINK ABOUT IT"! If every one of our 134 auction companies raised just our $500, that alone would bring in $75,000 in our 75th year! Has a bit of a nice ring to it! Call Lorraine TODAY to get your print(s) and let's make it a reality! The organization is taking a big step towards exposure in the media via a television campaign that says "Use Alberta Auctioneers Association Members". We believe that given the huge strides made toward the betterment of the industry in general, it's time to reap a reward from these efforts. Norm Moore, Don Montgomery and Ron Sekura have worked very hard in achieving a goal that 5 years ago would not have seemed possible. In closing, I wish everyone a great 2008 and look forward to representing you for the next two years. Please feel free to contact me at anytime. (403) 340-2070 • Fax (403) 340-2019 website: www.albertaautioneers.com Small Communities Have Huge Hearts There is no denying the community spirit in all of the smaller centers in Alberta. Whether it be, for local sports teams, community organizations, major charities or to help an individual in need you know if you're selling a charity auction in rural Alberta it is going to be a success. This was never more obvious then Auctioneers Association of Alberta Cancer Fundraiser held over the course of last year. The event was a huge success raising $30,200.00 for families coping with cancer. The presentation of the cheque even made the CTV News, but none of this could have happened without the support of our rural communities. Of the total funds raised all but about $6000.00 came from small town Alberta. Leading the way was the Village of Rockyford. Rockyford is about an hours drive east of Calgary and has a population of about 350 people. In November of last year the Rockyford Lions Club hosted a charity sale with proceeds going towards renovations of the community hall. Not only was this a successful event for them it also raised $6400.00 for our cancer fund and established a new record selling price of $3400.00 for a single picture, but it didn’t end there. In late December there was a fundraising day for a member of their community who was diagnosed with Lou Gerig’s disease. This was a full day starting at 6 a.m. with a hockey tournament and curling bonspiel that ran until 6 p.m. Then there was a supper and auction. Again the auction was a runaway success for the community and also generated an additional $2600.00 for our cancer fund, bringing the total raised in Rockyford alone to $9000.00. This is an unbelievable amount to come out of one small community. Robert Koester accepting plaque for Village of Rockyford The Auctioneers Association of Alberta presented a plaque to the Rockyford Lions Club and the Village of Rockyford in appreciation of them being the top contributors in the province of Alberta to our Cancer fund. You cannot beat the spirit shown in all or our smaller centres. Wayne Orsten Past President –6– The Print That Just Keeps Giving & Giving... –7– AUCTIONEER'S ASSOCIATION OF ALBERTA In Support of the Cancer Society - print by Alberta artist Bernie Brown On Saturday, February 9th, 2008 Bill had a charity auction for Harvest Community Church in Beaumont. As was asked of the auctioneers at the convention, Bill requested they allow him to auction off the Bernie Brown print we got from the Auctioneer's Association. Bill gave a little speal on how cancer has affected both of our families and started to auction the print. The print started at $650.00 to finish at $1,300.00. The people generously donated it back to be resold. The print then sold for $1,000.00 and these people also donated it back to be resold. The final resale of the print brought $750.00 for a grand total of $3,050.00. Bill was speechless. We were so excited about the start of our help to raise money for cancer through the Auctioneer's Association; we just had to let you know! - submitted by Bill & Sandra Horneman –7– –8– GENERAL MEETING February 2, 2008 • Calgary, AB Call Meeting to Order President Wayne Orsten called the meeting to order at 1:15 pm. 50 members were in attendance. The Association had a good year and the Board of Directors had no major issues to deal with. The following is an overview from each of the meetings. February 10th The new board was assigned to their committees as follows: Vice President: Archives: 2008 Convention: 2009 Convention: Legislative: Education: Automotive: AMVIC: Membership: Surety & Discipline: Web Page: Tyro Contest: Sales Bills: Nominating Committee: TS Brad Neal John Perlich Don Montgomery Gerald Zimmerman Mark Bergevin Don Montgomery & Brent Cheung Wade Michener Wayne Orsten Dale Menzak Ron Sekura Brad Neal Jody Lindstrand Gerald Zimmerman Robert Lind ...continued Ted Stefiuk Insurance Services Ted Stefiuk RHU CFP CLU B. It was also decided to have Lorraine check out various banks to find the best interest rates for our accounts while keeping them 100% secure. March 26th It was unanimously decided that all funds remain at the Treasury Branch for a two-year term at 4%. Archives reported that the Cochrane Museum would like to continue to work with us. Surety & Discipine reported that one member had lost their bonding for repeatedly not complying with the education requirements set down by the Association. Also, that they were to meet with Scott Hood and George Yates to discuss concerns brought forward regarding traveling auction companies. Web Page: It was decided that since not all of our members auction companies are bonded through the Association that an auction company would not hav4e to be a member of the Association to advertise their upcoming sales on our web page as long as the principles of the company are members in good standing. Automotive: Copies of the Association contracts and bid cards to be sent to Ken Hientz for approval. AMVIC reported they were dealing with a new minister and were still seeking funding for a compensation fund. September 10th The Association was asked by one of its members to look into the possibility of becoming self-regulating. Though being self-regulating would give the Association more teeth in dealing with problems in the industry. It was decided that we should approach other self-regulating industries to see if this could be economically accomplished. It was also decided that the association provide signs for its members to display stating that under the Fair Trading Act: No Consignor or their agent can bid on their own items at an auction sale whether the auction is reserved or unreserved. ...continued – 12 – For more information, contact: RICK WATTIE - Auctioneer/Instructor Phone: (780) 453-6964 Fax: (780) 447-7307 Toll Free: 1-888-453-6964 Email: [email protected] President's Annual Report continued... March 19th At AMVIC's request, their head of investigations Bob Knight attended this meeting. The focus of the discussion was on the importance of the auction industry to continue to work with AMVIC to seek out unlicensed cubers and to help them with information on odometer roll-backs. It was brought to our attention that the Motor Vehicle Dealer Association were lobbying the government to have the legislation changed so they could sell "as is" to the public. This would mean that we would be able to sell dealer vehicles without a certificate of mechanical fitness. Our Association has sent them a letter offering our support in changing the legislation. Upon reviewing the costs of self-regulation, it was decided that it would not be in the best interests of the Assocation to proceed at this time. Wayne Orsten President – 13 – AUTOMOTIVE REPORT - By Wade Michener A court ruling in Edmonton determined that Automotive Dealers are not allowed to sell as is–where is, and the judge interpreted that to include public auctions. Recently the Motor Dealers Association of Alberta has started a lobby to enable dealers to sell a vehicle as is–where is regardless of the venue — be it on their lot or through an auction. The ability to sell as is–where is, is a crucial part of the auction process and so the Auctioneer's Association has sent a letter to the MDA is support of its efforts. There is of course no finite timeline on this so we will keep our members updated on the progress through the Auctioneers Association magazine. – 14 – LEGISLATIVE REPORT - By Marc Bergevin We held two major meetings over last year. One was held with George Yates and Scott Hood. We discussed 10 items. This was done out of a courtesy to inform them that we had a meeting with Minister Snelgrove as well as his Special Advisor, Cathy Kiss. At the meeting with George and Scott it was suggested to prioritize the discussion items as well very important to inform George and Scott who would then be meeting with the Minister. The meeting was then held with Minister Snelgrove in December 2007 where the following 10 items were discussed: 1. Licensing of Auctioneers – one time registration. Previously discussed with George Yates – Association agrees – can we move forward. 2. Trust funds only in trust accounts (wording to be added to regulations) “All public funds intended for public auction will be deposited in trust accounts”. Regs 16 (3) 3. Two bidders on – Association and Scott Hood agreed to add proper wording to Regs. “If two bidders are on after Auctioneer says should – re-open bidding to those two bidders only. 4. Define qualified auctioneer in regulations to say: “minimum schooling 80 hours”, previously agreed by Association and Director Regs. 6 (a) (iii) 5. A) Central registry for stolen goods and vehicles or alternate registry (with all industries) B) Liens on vehicles to be removed in proper time frame. Discussed with Scott Hood. 6. The Association would like to be sent annual, bi-annual results of government audits on Auction Company and their findings (previously agreed). 7. Trust Fund Withdrawal – Define in Regs. How auction companies my pay consignor’s from general account, before all trust fund sale proceeds have been collected. Regs 17 (1) 8. Conflict of Commissioner of oaths being same person making and signing the contract – ie: Auctioneer listing farm sale out in country and have to go back with a separate individual. 9. The word “Auction” be restricted to licensed public auction business as discussed George Yates. 10. Discuss traveling Auctions. Follow up to the Dec. meeting is scheduled for early February where we will review the items previously discussed. – 15 – EDUCATION REPORT - By Don Montgomery & Brent Cheung Every year continuing education for auctioneers in the auction business is becoming more and more important. The business climate and the way we do business continues to change even if we think otherwise. The Auctioneering 101 & 201 course was held on March 14/07 at the Capri in Red Deer, Alberta. It was held again in conjunction with our 2008 Convention. This was done on Thursday just prior to the opening of Convention 2008. This was done for two reasons: 1. To cut costs & traveling time for the instructors, association, and those attending. 2. It was hoped that it would increase attendance at the convention. The next course dates have not yet been established. It will likely be held only once, and just before convention at it was this year. Thank you to Ron Sekura, Brad Neal, Lorraine Klepper & Don Montgomery for taking the time to instruct at these courses. Personally, we feel that the auctioneers currently in the auction business are looking for more training and education. The education committee needs to begin to look seriously at bringing in trainers who appeal to the general membership and their education needs. The Ringmen seminar at this year's convention was a testament of this fact. Many have asked that we bring Mr. Rigby back for a three-day seminar. Work has already begun to do so. If you have any suggestions, your education committee would love to hear from you. Again, thank you for entrusting us with this responsibility. WEB PAGE REPORT - By Brad Neal There has been a significant improvement with the usage of the sale announcement feature on our web page. Everyone needs to remember this feature is FREE and EASY to access. The web page portfolio is being expanded. This will assist Lorraine with the monthly magazine. This posting is now called the Media Committee and will also include assembling a television campaign to promote Auction Companies that are Members of our Association. By the time this magazine is out, our web page will have access to this edition plus all past editions directly from the home page without having to log on. We will continue to post notices that are for Association Members ONLY in a log-in area. The Crime Stoppers Link on our web page is now a link to an area where any lost, stolen or other legal sensitive items can be posted. This must be done by myself, so if you have items that you want reported here, don't hesitate to call. I have been in touch with the RCMP 'K' Division and believe that we will have their support in advising us on a detachment by detachment level of things that we should be aware of. – 16 – 2008 AUCTIONEERING 101 & 201 GRADUATES DEAN ROBERT TRACY TERRY SANDRA BILL PAUL ALAN DANNY GALE JOE DWAYNE DON LANA DARREN ALLAN JEFF ARNTZEN BERGEVIN ELKE HADDOCK HORNEMAN HORNEMAN KORMOS LEYS MAZEROLLE MILLER PERLICH REILANDER STREEPER TOEWS TOEWS WALPER WICKENHEISER Congratulations! – 17 – THANKS... to all those who attended this years AAA Convention in Calgary. I am still overwhelmed with the support we had by all who took the time to attend. Never have so many attended the Thursday night's reception and stayed so late. Brian Rigby's ringmen course was filled and overflowing with attendees. The other seminars were all well received as well. Barry Jung's seminar on “internet selling” and “selling your own Internet auction” was a real hit for many. Brad Neal said that even he learned something about his camera that he never knew before. Friday noon we were blessed with television cameras beaming us across Alberta and beyond as Wayne Orsten presented the Cancer Foundation with a cheque for over $30,000.00 dollars. That evening the Tyro Auction grossed a record amount. Thanks very much to all donors and buyers. A special thanks to two great sponsors The Farm Press Group & Farm Business Communications. Saturday night was the Brett Kissell show. How can a 17-year-old youth have that much talent, stage presence, and politeness all wrapped up in one? What a show! When was the last time you saw a Saturday night with 90 people wanting more at 12:30 am? Oh, I almost forgot. The FOOOOOOD and service was something else! Thanks Sheraton Cavalier for the great job. I'm almost out of breath and my heart rate is up just writing this. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to attend, to help, to encourage or what ever. Five years later, following four aimless years of University studies, continued part-time employment at Hall’s, and further introspection [read: massive credit card debt], Brent came to the realization that higher education and a big salary was not what life was really about and accepted a fulltime position with Hall’s as warehouse manager. In 1995, the opportunity came along to attend auction school. Brent’s years of quiet study under the tutelage of Frank Hall [read: brown-nosing and sucking up] came to good use, seeing him graduate the Western Canadian School of Auctioneers as class President and Valedictorian. ...continued The Name To Know For Insurance Commercial Insurance Contract Bond Specialists Life Insurance Home & Auto Employee Benefits RRSPs Insurance Broker for Your Association Monthly Payment Plans • 24 Hour Emergency Service Contact: Denis Baker, C.I.A.B. or Neil Hogg Calgary 403-245-1389 Toll Free1-888-838-6653 OVER 100 YEARS SERVING ALBERTANS www.toolepeet.com Toole Peet & Co. Ever the glutton for punishment, and in spite of the promise he made to himself to give up further education, Brent continued to hone his skills. In 2000, he graduated the Institute of Certified Canadian Auctioneers, and in 2002, became a certified appraiser with the International Society of Appraisers. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and in 2002, Brent left Hall’s Auction Services. After a few more months of introspection [read: self-pity], he accepted a position with Century Services Inc. and began a whirlwind education of the industrial and commercial auction trade. Unfortunately, his previous years spent dealing with antiques, artwork, jewellery and collectibles had not prepared him for the harsh realities of the industrial and commercial industry, i.e. grease and grime. Thankfully, he was able to draw upon the support and experience of fellow Centurions and past A.A. of A. President’s Colin Spencer and Ron Victor, and in short course, began to appreciate the finer qualities of the industry…Wrangler’s and pickup trucks. And through it all, Brent has had the bountiful support of his loving wife Candace, and in 2003, was blessed with the addition of daughter Audree [read: Centre of the Universe]. Brent is excited to be back on the Association’s Board and looks forward to serving the membership for years to come. – 26 – DIRECTOR PROFILE Robert Lind I was born and raised on a mixed farm at Buck Creek near Drayton Valley. I joined the Alberta Auctioneer's Assocation in January of 1999 where I completed and won the Tyro contest. I was also voted on as a Director of the Association at the meeting and am currently the Vice President. We had our first machinery consignment sale on the farm May long weekend in 1999 and the next September long weekend. Since then we have made them annual sales. Last spring was the largest ever with 285 consignors and just under 6,000 people attended. We have developed the sale yard into a permanent facility. They manage Purebred Simmental sales selling bulls in the spring and females in the fall.
