the
Slave Lake
Region
Introduction
If you want to live 5 minutes from any recreation adventure, be in a community
where jobs are endless and where opportunities for community building are
limitless, come to the Slave Lake Region!
The Slave Lake Region includes the Town of Slave Lake, Municipal District of Lesser
Slave River, and the Sawridge First Nation, who are dedicated to building a collaborative
and cohesive future together. The Slave Lake Region encompasses all areas within the
three entities – together they cover more than 10,000 square kilometers. The Region is
almost twice the size of Prince Edward Island with 1/15 the population – this truly lets
you feel like you are getting away from it all, whether you are raising your family here or
just getting away for the weekend. The Region includes the urban area of Slave Lake, as
well as nine outlying communities: Flatbush, Chisholm, Smith, Hondo, Marten Beach,
Wagner, Widewater, Canyon Creek, and Assineau. The core of the Sawridge First Nation
is adjacent to the Town, with additional lands in the Region.
Outdoor enthusiasts find world class activities in the Slave Lake Region: fishing, hunting,
boating, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, golfing, motocross, snowmobiling,
ATV-ing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and more! Sports such as hockey, soccer,
curling, baseball, cricket, swimming and tennis are enjoyed by all in the area. The arts
community is also active with art camps, various dance classes, and plays and productions
running throughout the year. Service clubs such as the Rotary Club, Royal Purple, Royal
Canadian Legion (Slave Lake, Smith, Flatbush), Elks and more promote healthy and
connected communities allowing residents to get the most out of where they live.

History
Traditionally the Sawridge First Nation used the sprawling Boreal forest and the numerous
lakes and rivers of the Slave Lake Region as their territory for centuries prior to the arrival
of colonialists. David Thompson, an explorer, arrived at the mouth of the Lesser Slave
River on April 28th, 1799, and was the first white man to see the vast Lesser Slave Lake.
Thompson established a townsite thereafter called Sawridge, coming from the sawtoothed appearance of the large sand ridges along the north shoreline of the Lake. By
the 1890s the Hudson’s Bay Company had two posts in the Slave Lake Region, using
the knowledge and labour of the First Nations people to fish and fur trap. In 1899 the
historic Treaty 8 was signed on the banks of the Lake, by the original seven signatories,
one being the Sawridge First Nation.
The Sawridge townsite became a trading and transport center at the turn of the century,
relying on the rivers and lakes of Northern Alberta to bring goods and people from
Edmonton to the Peace Country; Colonel “Peace River Jim” Cornwall built the first
steamboat to ply the Lesser Slave Lake. As goods and people come from Edmonton via

steamboat, a small outpost called Mirror Landing was founded 70 km east of
Sawridge, opposite what is now the Smith townsite. It supplied those making
the journey to the Peace Country, and offered weary travellers food and rest.
Such steamboats and supply outposts were used extensively until 1913 when
the railroad expanded from Edmonton and was built on the southside of the
Lesser Slave Lake. In the late 1920s and early 1930s there was substantial
“Little White Church” – near Hondo
activity in the Chisholm, Smith, and Sawridge areas. Logging trains brought
heavy shipments of logs to the sawmill in Chisholm and provided many jobs
for newcomers to the area.
As the Sawridge townsite grew, the name changed to Slave Lake in 1923.
The community was built on the banks of the Lake and by 1935 disaster
struck, flooding the hamlet – a new townsite was founded approximately
two and a half miles south, where the heart of Slave Lake is located today.
With increased work and entrepreneurial opportunities in the early 1940s the
Men hauling logs, 1909
community of Slave Lake had grown to over 300 people by 1945.
In 1964 oil was struck in the Region; this attracted numerous entrepreneurs
and opportunists to the area, resulting in a population jump and the
transformation of Slave Lake to a town in 1965. New industry operations
ballooned the population to more than 2,700 people by 1971. With
continuous activity in the oil and gas extraction and wood products industries,
the Town of Slave Lake has grown to more than 7,000 people today, with a
Regional population of more than 10,000.

Indoor Recreation
Whether it’s summer or winter, the indoor recreation facilities located throughout the Region
boast numerous activities for all to enjoy. In Slave Lake, the Multi-Rec Centre (MRC) offers
ice rinks and a Fieldhouse. The two regulation-sized ice rinks are home to hockey games
of the local teams – Thunder, Wolves, Winterhawks and Kodiaks. Figure skating practices
and regional competitions are also held in the arenas. The upper-tier of the Fieldhouse
provides a running track where residents of all ages can walk, jog or run. Basketball, soccer,
badminton and volleyball are just a few of the activities that can also be enjoyed in the
Fieldhouse – the surface is covered in rubberized matting for safe and enjoyable play.
Within the MRC, families are able to gather at the indoor playground to let their children
climb, play and make new friends – this is a great way for families new to town to meet
people with similar interests. After a day of enjoying the arenas, track, Fieldhouse and play
centre, families can grab a bite to eat at the fully serviced, onsite concession.
The Southshore area also provides recreation facilities to families and friends. In Canyon
Creek, the arena offers public and family skating, while in Widewater the Community
Complex is used for indoor recreation for residents and visitors to the area.
The Northern Lights Aquatic Centre is the indoor pool for the area. Red Cross swimming
lessons, scuba diving lessons and even kayaking lessons are offered in the 25 meter main tank.

Summer Outdoor
Recreation
During the summer, visitors and residents of the Slave Lake Region not only enjoy the
numerous activities on lakes and rivers, but also participate in sports teams, annual
fishing competitions, and many rounds of golf.
Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta’s largest automobile-accessible lake, is over 1,160 km2, and
enjoying it is easy! One can paddle board, boat, kayak, canoe, swim, water ski, and walk
the miles of beach with its lapping waves. Boats can launch onto the Lake from the Lesser
Slave River at the free Municipal boat launch, or from spots around the Southshore such
as the Canyon Creek Harbour. Boaters and water-sport enthusiasts have open and wide
areas to play. On shore, Devonshire Beach is widely used throughout the summer with
friends and families enjoying the sun, sand and water.
14
With around 247 km of shore, there are a multitude of places to park the
boat on the beach and explore for a few hours. Enjoy a picnic with friends
and family along a quiet stretch of sand and afterwards wade in the shallow
waters and enjoy the lazy lapping of water.
For remote lake experiences, try Fawcett, Lawrence, or Cross Lakes. All on
the east side of the Region, the lakes are surrounded by the boreal forest
and provide peace and serenity for those looking for a quiet retreat. For
adventurers or those looking for a unique water experience, try free tubing

down the Lesser Slave and Pembina Rivers.
The Region also has absolute world-class freshwater fishing. Lesser Slave
Lake is home to large walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, and whitefish.
Every year fishing tournaments, such as the Canadian Tire Anglers Cup
Walleye Tournament, bring hundreds of hopefuls to the Lake to try and catch
“the big one” and cash in on some of the over $145,000 total cash payout.
Other amazing fishing options are Fawcett Lake and Lawrence Lake in the
Smith area. In Slave Lake, try fishing from the Sawridge Creek to catch some

elusive Arctic Grayling.
With a young population, the Slave Lake Region has numerous outdoor
summer activities for families and children to enjoy. In the Region there are
10 parks and one spray park ready for fun and action. A large park in Slave
Lake, Hilda Eben, boasts two tennis courts and a skate park, which is widely
used by skateboarders and BMX-ers alike. A 10 km paved walking path takes
walkers and runners through the forested areas next to the Sawridge Creek
and out to Devonshire Beach to connect with the Trans-Canada Trail.
Ball diamonds are widely used throughout the summer months in the Slave

Lake Region, playing baseball, softball, fastball and slow pitch. Local teams
practice and host events and tournaments in Slave Lake, Widewater, Smith,
and Flatbush. Soccer fields can also be found and are often the site of friendly
matches. With the diversified and growing multi-cultural population, sports
such as cricket are also played.
Golf is another favourite pastime in the Region. Built on the shores of the
Lesser Slave Lake, the Gilwood Golf Course and Country Club is an 18 hole
oasis in the thick of the forest, only 10 km from Slave Lake. The course gives
even the most experienced golfers a challenge, which is demonstrated each

year at numerous tournaments. A second golf course is in Flatbush, the River
Valley Golf Course, gives locals and visitors a nine hole relaxing quest.
The Flat Top Motocross Track is an epic adventure for local riders and those
that attend competitions hosted by the local association. The track has an
uphill start with lots of natural elevation changes and is surrounded by forest
and endless trail riding opportunities.
ATVing is a passionate pastime for many within the Region. Spending the
day with friends, family or simply taking off for a day solo to get out into the

backcountry is a common activity. Many gather friends together and make
a day of it, stopping for a wiener roast and enjoying the quiet of the deep
forest. Summer and winter, quads, rangers, sleds and Argos can all be found
navigating the wooded terrain, such as the Peace River Trail, to engage those
seeking adventure in the boreal forest.
Those looking for a sandy terrain to ride machines can explore the Chisholm
and Smith/Hondo areas. With plenty of sandy trails and places to have
campfires, this area is an ATV’ers dream! Spend a full day in the eastern
portion of the Region and explore some of the back lakes that can only be

The Slave Lake Region is the province’s fourth largest producer of forest
products such as lumber, oriented strand board (OSB), plywood and wood
pulp. In 2009, the Region accounted for 8.6% of all wood fibre processed in
the province. As a result, two of the Region’s largest manufacturing sectors
are wood products (mainly lumber and OSB) and pulp and paper. The
Region is also the 6th largest conventional oil-producing Region in Alberta
and the 4th largest overall oil producer (combining conventional and oil
sands). The Region’s share of Alberta’s conventional oil production was 8.9%
in 2009. The total gas potential represents 6.2% of Alberta’s overall reserves,
and oil potential is 12.5% of Alberta’s conventional reserves. Furthermore,
the Region is home to one of the largest calcium chloride producers and
suppliers in North America.
The Slave Lake airport provides convenient access to the forestry and
petroleum industries, and hosts numerous charter movements each year.
The airport is a Transport Canada certified airport and is operated by the Slave
Lake Airport Services Commission. A busy airport, in 2012 the airport had
over 7,500 aircraft movements with the majority of those being commercial
and helicopter. The airport is also home to a medevac base, which provides
area residents with access to primary healthcare in the province. A unique

Life in the
Slave Lake Region
The Slave Lake Region is a thriving and dynamic area that
covers over 10,000 square km’s in north-central Alberta.
Families, entrepreneurs and individuals looking for connected
communities can enjoy living in the town of Slave Lake, or in
the nine outlying rural communities in the Region. Warmth and
hospitality is entrenched in the area with neighbours supporting
neighbours and where people make a difference every day in
building a stronger and more resilient community.
Stories abound about people coming to the Slave Lake Region
for a visit and end up moving here to raise their family. Others
come for a temporary career and find themselves here 30 years
later, fully engaged with the community. Whether you are looking
for a place to settle and put down roots or looking to enjoy the
abundant recreational opportunities while excelling in your
chosen career, the Slave Lake Region offers a niche for everyone.
A 2.5 hour drive from Edmonton, the Slave Lake Region not only
allows families to grow in a small and integrated community but
also provides easy access to the big city. Various local shopping
options are available with clothing, shoes, groceries, general
goods and serves and more run locally by businesspeople who
provide quality shopping experiences and give back to make a
difference in the communities they serve.
Community members have numerous ways to get involved in
their communities, whether through sport and recreation or
through service clubs. Recreation programming such as hockey,
figure skating, soccer and volleyball are enjoyed during the
winter, and baseball, basketball, tennis and cricket are offered
during the summer months. Service clubs such as the Rotary
Club, Royal Canadian Legion, the Elks, and others come together
to build a better community; projects recently completed by
local groups are the Rotary Club of Slave Lake Library and the
Multi-Rec Centre Fieldhouse.
