Hit List - The Tracking Board
OKAY, LET’S START WITH THE OBVIOUS. YOU HAVE NO PARKS, YOU HAVE NO
BEACHES, HAVE NO MOVIE THEATERS, YOU HAVE NO TELEVISION, NO TELEVISION SHOWS, YOU HAVE NO BOOKS, NO MUSIC, NO SWIMMING POOLS, NO
SEASONS, WHICH MEANS YOU HAVE NO RAIN OR SNOW OR LEAVES THAT
CHANGE COLORS IN THE FALL, YOU ALSO HAVE NO TREES, NO GRASS, NO
CULTURE - I MEAN, YOU REALIZE THE MOON IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE
EARTH RIGHT? • WAS I BUT THE FLESHY, BLOOD-FILLED TWIN OF THIS SMILING RAG DOLL, MUTE, INERT AND SIDEWAYS PRONE BEFORE ME? WAS I — HAD
I ALWAYS BEEN — A MERE PLAYTHING? AN AMUSEMENT? A TOY? • ELI STARES
UP AT THE CRUCIFIX. HE DOESN’T LIKE IT, AND FOR GOOD REASON. ITS KINDA
CREEPY. ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. BUT FOR SOME REASON, HE CAN’T TAKE HIS
EYES OFF IT. HE STARES INTO THE PAINED EYES OF JESUS. AND...IS IT POSSIBLE? THE MOUTH OF JESUS LOOKS AS THOUGH IT’S OPENING, READY TO CRY
OUT! ELI’S ABOUT TO SCREAM HIMSELF WHEN, BEHIND HIM… • YOU’RE INSANE.
I’M NOT INSANE, I’M IGNORANT. • MISUNDERSTANDING? WHAT SORT OF
REASONABLE THING MIGHT HE HAVE BEEN THINKING THAT WOULD CAUSE
HIM TO GROPE YOUR DAUGHTER? • ONE, TWO THREE FOUR / CLOSE YOUR
WINDOWS, LOCK YOUR DOOR / CUZ YOU NEVER KNOW FOR SURE / WHO IT
IS HE’S COMING FOR / FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT / BY THE TIME IT’S GETTING
LATE / ALL YOU CAN DO IS WAIT / TIL THE WATER MAN DECIDES YOUR FATE...
*
2015
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK, MR. SIMMS? WHAT IS IT LIKE ACTUALLY BEING INSIDE THE HUMAN BODY? • IN THE DISTANCE THE SCREECH OF POLICE SIRENS GROWS LOUDER. BUT LAURA NO LONGER SEEMS CONCERNED. INSTEAD, SHE LOOKS UP AT THE STARS AND, FOR THE FIRST TIME WE’VE
SEEN, SHE SMILES. • JESUS CHRIST, JOSIE. I’VE BEEN ON THE FORCE THIRTY-FIVE YEARS. HALF THOSE GUYS UP IN THE COUNTY JAIL I PUT THERE
MYSELF! TWO YEARS? MAY AS WELL BE A DEATH SENTENCE! AND FOR
WHAT? A MISTAKE? SOMETHIN’ WE DIDN’T MEAN TO DO? SO WHAT DO
WE DO? STAN THINKS. HE LOOKS BACK AT THE SHERIFF’S CAR IN THE
DISTANCE. THE BODY AT HIS FEET. THE DARK WOODS BY THE ROAD. *WE
NEED TO HIDE THIS. • WE’RE NOT GOING TO GET AWAY. HE TURNS BACK TO
THE HOUSE. FOCUSED. HE THROWS HIS ARM SKYWARD. A SINGLE PANEL
OF WOOD RIPS ITSELF OFF THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE AND FLIES INTO THE
SKY- AS IF GRAVITY WERE REVERSED. • THIS IS THE MOST OFFENSIVE, DEGRADING REPRESENTATION OF MY SPECIES I HAVE EVER SEEN. AND I DON’T
SOUND LIKE THAT. DO I SOUND LIKE THAT? I’M SO ANNOYING. I WANT TO
PUNCH ME. AND EVERYONE ELSE. WITH MY HANDS. THESE ARE HANDS!
THEY ARE NOT MITTENS! THEY DON’T COME OFF! IT’S BASIC BIOLOGY!

THE 2015 HIT LIST
OUR SIXIEST LIST EVER!
Presenting our sixth annual list. In boardrooms and at bars, in offices and restaurants, while stuck in traffic or at
thirty thousand feet, the tastes of Hollywood are being assembled, shared and solidified daily. It’s no secret that
every industry professional has a personal “best of” list, but the question was this: if you assembled the opinions of
Hollywood’s most influential players, could you identify the year’s best specs?
As Hollywood’s premier spec tracking source now for the past seven years, we decided to find out. This year we
worked tirelessly to compile the tastes and opinions of Hollywood’s titans in order to bring attention to those who
were overlooked, shine a light on those who most deserved it, and recognize those taking the next step in their
careers. Since publishing the first Hit List in 2010, we’ve kept a finger on the industry’s pulse, broadcasting with everincreasing accuracy the heartbeat of Hollywood.
This Year:
378 Scripts were eligible
473 Industry members voted
2365 Votes were tallied
207 Scripts received at least one vote
116 Writers made the list / 72 for the first time
91 Scripts made the list
7 Votes were needed to make the list.
The Hit List exists to celebrate spec scripts. By focusing exclusively on specs, this list aims to bring recognition to the
new material that enters Hollywood, with an eye towards celebrating the most passionate gambling circuit in all of
Hollywood – the spec market.
To be eligible for the list, a screenplay must have been released into the spec market between December 1st, 2014
and November 30th, 2015. To be considered a spec, a screenwriter must not have been paid for their work prior to
exposing their script to the market.
The Hit List is voted on by executives, producers, writers, agents, managers, directors, and assistants. To take part
in the judging process, a person must have been employed within the film industry, and nominated by those who
have judged before them. This organic process allows an unbiased and writer-friendly vote, based on the expansion
to those who are reading these scripts first, and those who are considered to represent the opinions of Hollywood.
It’s important to remember that the difference between the million-dollar sale and the unsold sample is rarely an indication of one being better than the other, but instead can be seen as talent meeting opportunity on a roll of good
luck. It’s a complex industry, and the seemingly obvious correlations may not be as obvious as you think.
Once again, we hope you enjoy our list.
LAST YEAR’S HIT LIST
2014 Marked our fifth annual list, and it was one we were incredibly proud of. From being the first annual
list to feature a female writer at the top, to watching about a dozen of the unsold and unrepped writers
signing and selling in the weeks that followed, it was a beautiful reminder as to why we make this list, and
why we do what we do over here at The Tracking Board.
For us, it’s never been about the praise, or taking credit for compiling Hollywood’s votes into a list, instead,
it’s all about the writers, the projects, and the agents, managers, producers who believe in them. So hats
off to you all for making 2014 the standout year it was.

THE SHARK IS NOT WORKING by Richard Cordner
Every moment in life is the result of all the moments preceding it...or some shit like that. We like to highlight
so called “life altering moments” but fail to realize it’s everything leading up to that moment that caused it to
happen. One moment runs into the next. Each one dictating our trajectory. Each one equally important. But
in the present we are blind. We think we have the ability to stay one step ahead, but, as always, life catches up
and we are left thinking... “whoa”. Because by the time tomorrow arrives it becomes today all over again. And
nobody knows what today will bring. Nobody. Okay, start from the beginning. How do Marvin and--no,
how do Calvin and Hobbes meet? Is Hobbes a Christmas gift? Does Calvin see Hobbes in a store? No--how
would Calvin think he met Hobbes? Hobbes is a real tiger, so...probably in the jungle. Maybe Calvin caught
Hobbes while on an expedition. Calvin the Safari Hunter. Sets a trap, finds his best friend: a tiger. Yes. - Bill picks
a pencil and RULER, and DRAWS FOUR SQUARE PANELS in the center of his page. Brushes his mustache as he
stares at them, four empty boxes just brimming with possibility... You were right, you know – world’s not the
same as it was. Our enemies have changed. Communists. Fascists. Madmen rising up through the cracks of a
shattered Europe... * You bringing me back aboard... On His Majesty’s Service? * You and your man. His skills
may be of some benefit after all. * I have terms. * Yes, thought you might. * I’ll need a few hands to help out.
And a bigger section budget. * Curious, this section of yours, what will you call it? * Cumming pauses; knows
EXACTLY what to call it: Six. You ever hear a swan song, pengyo? It originates from the Ancient Greek belief
that when a swan dies, this otherwise-mute bird sings what is meant to be the most transportive yinyue you’ve
ever fucking heard. I cannot comment on the veracity of this ornithological anecdote. But I do got insight
into the more metaphorical aspects of the term. Per instance, the thinking goes that the moment before a
t
t
2013
person dies - everything they’ve been holding back pours out in a swan song - a moment of truth, if you will...
I was twenty years old when I lost my mind. They don’t like to call it that, though. The shrinks, I mean. They
call it “blossoming.” My disorder blossomed. Like a rose, or a maiden. I would call it more like “a free fall into
infinite darkness.” But maybe that’s why I’m not a doctor. Shrinks are good like that, coming up with poetic
euphemisms to talk about awful things. But in a way, this one actually makes sense. It blossomed alright.
The way mold does on fruit. Or a wildfire does in the forest. It bloomed in my mind the way any disease
does in a body. Then it ate me alive. We can’t circle back, but we can remember. Time is not a wheel but
a heartbeat. Everything we made and everything we lost. This is my memory, but it’s about something
more: a mission. A golden record. And the greatest love I know. Static…Come in Tranquility Base. Do you
read me? Maybe I have a food addiction. People have that, ya know. That’s what it’s like for me when I
see bacon. I know it was supposed to be for Harry, but I couldn’t help mys-- Oh. You’re not talking about
that. * Well, maybe I ought to be! * Candy digs in her purse. For her wallet and her dignity. Pulls crumpled
bills from a Little Mermaid changepurse. * It was two pounds of hickory smoked. I want to pay you back—
I did what you said, we started looking up names from the books, perpetrators. He sees the
killers, right? The monsters? * I’ve seen them too. * There’s nothing. No record of any killers, or even
descriptions of any of the ... things. They aren’t real people, weren’t real people. They never existed.
They’re not ghosts of anyone. * They’re coming from somewhere. * Stone. They’re coming from
Stone. He’s creating them. Let me get this straight. You want to build a fully functional, twentyfive
foot great white shark that’ll work underwater -- and you want to shoot on the ocean? * That’s
correct. * The actual ocean. At sea. * Sounds like fun, right? * It sounds like a fucking nightmare, Steve.

I know we already looked at Bo. Look at him again. I need you to find out everything we missed
before, find answers to every question we never thought to ask before. I want to know what his
favorite toothpaste is, what his resting heart rate is, what his Mom’s resting heart rate is. Everything we overlooked when we watched his films last December. Stats only tell us what happened.
Not how. Not why. We have about ten hours to do about ten months worth of looking under and
between the stats, so get off your asses and get busy. • Drexler’s not just some rocket scientist,
he’s the rocket scientist. The master architect of the United States nuclear missile arsenal. Your
‘justice for all’ bullshit takes a back seat to nuclear winter, son. Be a fucking professional. This
is the best lead you could ever hope for. • THE WORLD IS TRANSFORMING ALL AROUND
THEM! Like a wave moving down Main Street, slightly faster than their car, the buildings transform before their very eyes. Camera pans to a windshield view of the street ahead as the buildings
become derelict. Boarded windows and “for lease” signs. Others vanish completely into chainlinked lots. Parked cars transform into new vehicles. Vehicles in motion explode in a shower of
evaporating photons as the wave hits them. New cars take form, already in motion with oblivious
drivers... as if they’d always been here. • Yeah. I mean, how does it work? Can you cause a ripple in the past that changes the future, like in Back to the Future, or are you creating an alternate
reality to branch off from this one, like in Star Trek? - That’s, uh, classified. - Can you at least tell
me what year you’re from? - Nope. Classified. - Well what’s the future like? - It’s very classified.
• Did you know the President travels in an eight ton military armored modified Cadillac CTS,
built to withstand gas, chemical, and missile attacks? - That’s on the internet? - Wikipedia. You
guys are doing a bang-up job with the secrecy thing. • I converted this cellar into a fallout shelter
right after 9/11. The electricity comes from solar panels mounted on the barn roof. Water’s piped
in from a well underneath the house then it goes through a reverse osmosis filter. Completely
self contained. Started to think I went a little overboard, but figured, even if it never serves its
purpose, it makes a decent wine cellar. • Do you remember how Sadamm would build munitions
factories next to schools and playgrounds to deter us from bombing those sites? Evil men mock
the good in their enemies. These days in Yemen, one need not venture deep into the mountains to
hear the call for Jihad. And al- Huwaidi’s a fucking rock-star to these people. You got boys putting up posters of him on their walls like he’s Eminem. My honest-to-God belief is that blowing
up this one bus saves a hundred, possibly even a thousand more buses. • Thank you Joel! What a
lucky girl I am to cross paths with you! I thought for sure I was a goner when the Ark was over
taken, and again when we crashed seven point four miles from here, and again when I was bit in
half, but then I met you and you saved me from the vicious mustela putorius culus! You are, in
no exaggeration of the word, my hero. • WARNING You are about to enter a highly quarantined
area of New York. 49% are dead... 49% are infected... 2% are surviving by Any Means Necessary
to take YOUR spot. If easily frightened, I suggest you stay on the Island... • THE SOUND OF
IMPACT -- -- then CHILLING STATIC. Alex is completely FROZEN. A statue. He can’t believe
his ears. Everything he was told -- everything the world believed -- was a lie and this is the proof.
• When I was six, my parents bought me a globe. One of those big ones on an iron floor stand.
This was the same year I dressed up as a wilderness explorer for Halloween. My room was papered with hand-drawn maps of my neighborhood. I studied every inch of that globe, and it was
the saddest moment of my childhood. It had all been explored already. Claimed, named, and labeled, top to bottom. My whole purpose in life, taken away. Next Halloween, I was an astronaut.

PREVIOUS TOP 10s
But I will not pause for you to catch up. I will not repeat myself, and you will not interrupt me. I do not like to be interrupted. If you ask me a question, I will ignore it and
continue speaking as I please. If you think me impolite, very well. You think that because you’re sitting where you are, and I am sitting where I am, that you are in control
of what is about to happen. You’re mistaken. I am in control, because I know things
that you do not know. • It’s gonna be insane, when his dick explodes like a champagne
bottle. Or like, when you put Mentos in soda. You ever YouTube that? That’s totally
gonna be his dick. • It was the forest where I broke my leg swinging from a tire swing
when I was seven. The forest that served as the shortcut home on our bicycles and
divided the town into rich and poor sections. The forest where a month prior, Chrissy
Monroe and Mr. Pulaski were shot and killed. And like that it was burnt to the ground.
• Two months later that American president was assassinated. He became a martyr for
their own lunar mission, and a reason for our hasty one. Science became a race. And
we lost. • Do you really wanna get shot over a box of tampons? Because I’m willing
to shoot you over a box of tampons. • Yeah. Yeah, I know. Maggie used to babysit
Julia. She’s just six fucking years old. And as my daughter was walking away, I put an
axe to the girl. They weren’t right, Ray. This whole goddamn thing ain’t right. What
have we done to ourselves. What the hell did we do? • Mr. Hayes, I have good news
and bad news for you. Good news is you’re not going into anaphylactic shock. You
just felt like you were. A high dose of laderol will do that to you. Bad news is your
body has to arrive D.O.A. at New York Presbyterian in about fifteen minutes, so we
need to hurry. • Let’s be real. There’s only one reason someone shows up to an event
like this the way you’re doing it: because you’re looking to make an investment. And
since you just rolled in here with the subtlety of the D-Day invasion, you’re gonna
have every hitter in the room looking to be in business with you. • Doc, I don’t have
the first damn clue what I’ve been through. You say it’s a lot, I’ll take your word for
it. And if there’s anything else you’d like to share, I would absolutely love to hear it,
‘cause I’ve got zero idea who I am, how I got here, or what may or may not be waiting
for me outside these walls. As far as I’m aware my life started yesterday. You know
everything I know because you told me everything I know, so the only person in this
room with any secrets is you. • Look at you. You’re so bored. You think the rules don’t
apply to you, and with that smile and that intellect, you’re right, they don’t. You’re the
one in a million. So now you gotta ask yourself -- is there anything you wouldn’t give
up to help save the world? • Three hundred and one. We shouldn’t have been around
for any of those days. But just when we needed it, we found this shelter, and it’s given
us food, a home, a life. Everything. For all we know, we’re the only ones left, the
only ones still alive. So you see... everyone one of those marks is really a miracle.
