Sample building massing
dimension between
planes to ensure that
parametric
relationships will work
between planes rather
than line segments

Mess surfaces dimensioned
dimension all faces that you
want to control
Add parameters or labels to your
dimensions to control them
Use the padlock on the dimension string to
lock some of the levels to set elements to
control the model will move
Open the family types dialog box
You can rationalize and numbers or alter
the dimensions in this dialog box
in this dialog box you can control the
labeled parameters
Note you can use the modify key to
change the parameters names

You can build mathematical
relationship between your
parameters in this dialog box
You can give any dimension
string any parameter you already
developed

In this case a 10 foot setback is
built into the massing model

Note you can also use the
join command to construct
your massing models
Make sure you’ve developed and set up all
your levels in your Revit project file before you
import your Revit conceptual masse familys

What’s wrong with this picture?
Once you’ve selected your conceptual
mass you can place floors by mass
You can then check the
levels you wish to turn
into floor slabs
• Floor slabs have been placed in lobby and gymnasium the masses
• no cellar slabs have been placed
add massing for
your cellars if
necessary
Locate your model axis to an easy
point for intersection into the Revit
project file. In this case the model axis
should be moved one of the corners of
your property line
insert all your separate mass family files into your project file [you can
use the place but if you’re inside your conceptual mass family]
now you can use the mass floors tools to
create floor slabs in individual masses
you’ll have to add the floors to each
mass elements separately
[in this case ground-level and seller
slabs are being created]

check for conflicts between your zoning
envelope and your project mass
After testing variance and correcting for
zoning issues you can upload your revised
massing model into your project file

Your Revit project file will be updated
automatically once you’ve loaded your
new conceptual mass family
