Mrs. Nancy Alford
T
his year, the Missouri FFA Association recognizes Mrs. Nancy Alford
for her service to agricultural education and to Missouri FFA. Nancy
has served education and young people for over 30 years. While
still raising her family, Nancy first began in education as the Area
Coordinator for Girl Scouts of America; Nancy then worked as the 4-H
Youth Education Assistant for Oregon County Missouri. For the last 21
years Nancy has been involved in our Ag Ed Family. The last 15 years, Nancy has served as
District Supervisor for Agricultural Education.
Nancy has quietly led the way for all teachers in Missouri agriculture. As Supervisor
for Missouri’s Agricultural Education’s State Staff, Nancy supervised two of Missouri’s six
districts. She is a strong torch bearer for the small rural school, while at the same time
being instrumental in encouraging growth and participation in the urban schools in and
around St. Louis.
Nancy has been instrumental in changing and updating the curriculum for Missouri
Agricultural Education programs. She has also been a champion for the implementation
of CASE (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education) in Missouri as well as the
incorporation of the agri-science teaching method in our departments. Nancy has also
been the superintendent of the State FFA Extemporaneous Speaking LDE, as well as
organizing our special recognition of our Honorary State Degree recipients, and has been
the state staff liaison with our State Convention Media staff and press room.
Nancy and her husband, Don, are involved members of the St. Paul United Methodist
Church at Thayer, Missouri. They are the parents of two children and grandparents of two
granddaughters and one great grandson.
The Missouri FFA wants to wish Nancy congratulations on her retirement and wants
her to know that she will be missed as she begins the next chapter in her life.
Dr. Norman Rohrbach
T
he Missouri FFA Association is also pleased to recognize Dr. Norman
Rohrbach for his service to agricultural education and the Missouri FFA.
Dr. Rohrbach has been involved in the Missouri education
systems for 37 years. He began his career as an agricultural educator in
California, MO from 1973-1979, in 1980 he worked as the Farm Business
Management Analysis coordinator, then Dr. Rohrbach accepted a
position as a District Supervisor in Agricultural Education and the executive secretary
for the Missouri Young Farmers and Young Farm Wives Association. He served in the
supervisory capacity from 1984-1994. Then he returned to California where he served as
an administrator for eight years. In August 2003, Dr. Rohrbach returned to agricultural
education as the coordinator for the Farm Business Management Analysis program, a
position he held until he retired in 2012.
Dr. Rohrbach has been instrumental in the direction that adult education has
taken in Missouri. Along with the adult education passion, Dr. Rohrbach has served
as the coordinator of the State Parliamentary Procedure and Knowledge Leadership
Development Events for the Missouri FFA, as well as other agricultural education projects
throughout his career.
Norman and his wife, Joyce, are looking forward to tackling projects on their farm
in California and spending more time with their grandchildren. They are involved in the
activities at the United Church of Christ. Norman also volunteers his time in the Kiwanis
Club, the local community band and is a part of the famous Rohrbach Brothers Quartet.
The Missouri FFA wishes to thank Dr. Rohrbach for his service to agricultural education
and the Missouri FFA and know he will be missed as he moves on to the sound of quail
calling and calves bawling.

event to reward and recognize the hard work and achievements of FFA members.

encourage each of you to be confident in your abilities Wear your Official Dress
with pride while representing your school and community. Value the Past and
the traditions of your organization as you plan ahead and Embrace Your Future
with this organization and in life.

FFA in missouri
The FFA is a national organization of, by and for students enrolled in Agricultural
Education. It was organized in Kansas City, Missouri in 1928 and is an integral
part of the program of career education in agriculture in the public schools. The
Missouri FFA Association was organized and elected its first officers on May 4,
1928. The state charter was issued by the National Office in 1929. In 2013, the
national membership was more than 557,318 students in 7,498 chapters. The
current Missouri FFA membership is 25,061 in 331 chapters.
The Missouri FFA Association holds its convention in April each year. More
than 8,000 FFA members take part in leadership development activities, Career
Development Events, award programs, and convention sessions. Participants also
include adults representing industry; the MU College of Agriculture, Food and
Natural Resources; NWMSU; MSU; school officials; the press; parents; and guests.
The State FFA Officers plan and conduct the convention sessions, including the
business meetings, award programs, entertainment and inspirational activities.
The 662 delegates, two from each chapter, transact all business.
Supervision of Convention and Career Development Events
The Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Education staff of the Department
of Elementary and Secondary Education assist in the planning and supervision of
the convention and competitions. These staff members, along with the State FFA

Registration / Information Desk – The information desk, located near the
East Entrance door, will be open at all times. Staff can provide information and
directions for various activities. An advisor from each chapter should register and
indicate the number of FFA members and guests in attendance from their chapter.
Parking – Use the parking lots on the east side of the Hearnes Center
Sponsors and Guests – Please check in at the registration/ information desk for
directions and seating.

Delegates – The two delegates from each chapter should register on the floor of
the auditorium prior to the delegate session. (See page 7.)
FFA Career Show – Exhibits are provided by businesses and organizations for
educational purposes from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday. FFA members and
guests are encouraged to visit these exhibits.
News Media Office – Representatives of the news media may obtain information
about all convention activities and competition results at the pressroom
backstage. Check at the Registration/Information Desk for directions or
assistance. The convention media website is: http://agebb.missouri.edu/news/

Food Service/Court – Beverages, pizza, hamburgers and sandwiches are available
at the refreshment stands located on the Main Concourse.
FFA Book Display – The first-place Scrapbook, Secretary’s Book, Treasurer’s Book
and Supervised Agricultural Experience Record Books from each of the FFA Areas
in the state are on display in the north corridor of the East Entrance.
FFA Apparel Booth – The Mizzou FFA Alumni Chapter is sponsoring a booth
offering FFA items. The booth will be on the main concourse on Thursday and
part of the FFA Career Show from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
FFA Website Booth - Missouri FFA Association unveils its brand-new website on
the Main Concourse beginning 12:00 p.m. Thursday and continuing through the
convention conclusion on Friday.
Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau – The Registration/Information Desk
located just inside the East Entrance will be providing informational packets
about Columbia. They will gladly assist you with information regarding restaurant
locations and other Columbia attractions.

State FFA Chorus – The State FFA Chorus is under the direction of Beth Dampf
of Jefferson City and Cathie Lowrey of Princeton. Chorus members belong to
FFA chapters throughout Missouri and were chosen on the basis of individual
applications. The chorus holds rehearsals and performs as part of the Friday
afternoon and evening sessions.
Courtesy Corps and Ushers – Volunteer groups from various chapters serve in
this capacity, with supervision by postsecondary agriculture students.
Operation of Career Development Events – The MU Agricultural Education
faculty and staff coordinate the Career Development Events and results. Those
participating include Dr. Bryan Garton, Dr. Anna Ball, Dr. Tracy Kitchel, Dr. Jon
Simonsen, Mr. John Tummons, Mr. Ron Scheiderer, Carol Swaim, and Sandra Kaiser.
MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources faculty members from
various departments conduct the Career Development Events under the direction
of Dr. Thomas L. Payne, Vice Chancellor and Dean; and Dr. Bryan Garton, Associate
Dean for Academic Programs.

Kalie Hall
National FFA Secretary
Franklin County FFA – Carnesville, Georgia
Kalie Hall of Georgia credits a mentor for offering a simple
piece of advice that has defined her approach to life. “I was
told, ‘Remember where you’ve come from and meet people
where they are,’” she said. “That’s something I’ll never
forget.”
She will have literally hundreds of thousands of opportunities in the next year to
apply her mentor’s advice as she travels the country as a national FFA officer this
year.
Hall was a nine-year member of the Franklin County High School FFA chapter in
Carnesville, Ga., led by advisors Cale Watkins, Gary Minyard and Owen Thomason.
In high school, she won a host of state and national FFA awards from 20082010. She held FFA titles of state secretary, chapter president and chapter vice
president. Hall was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a
student representative on her school system’s health education committee and an
active member in her local church as a youth group leader, keyboardist and choir
member.
She earned an associates degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and
is currently studying agricultural education at the University of Georgia at Athens.
She plans to become a middle school agricultural education teacher and FFA
advisor.
“As a national FFA officer, it will be my honor to further agricultural education in
the lives of students by investing in everyone who is in its sphere of influence,” she
said. “People want to be heard and understood. Agricultural education has taught
me to listen and given me experiences through which to understand. People need
hope. Agricultural education has given me an avenue through which to provide it.”
From Carnesville, Georgia, Hall is the daughter of Kent and Jill Hall.
Helping Youth Maximize their Agricultural eXperience (HYMAX)
A
re you a future leader in Agriculture, FFA and your community? The HYMAX Academy is for you! HYMAX is a youth
leadership conference designed for promising ninth grade students to reach their full potential! This academy
started in 2012 in honor of Dr. Terry Heiman, a long time State FFA Advisor. These FFA members will be prepared for
future leadership roles, agricultural development, written and verbal communication skills, and career development.
Most importantly, you will bring home tools to help you and your chapter. It will provide a foundation in agricultural
leadership and prepare you to embrace agricultural and leadership opportunities throughout your high school career.
This year the academy will be held June 28-30, 2013 at Camp Rising Sun at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Brothers to its 85th State Convention. Greg,
Nathan, and Kendal are employees of the
Kansas based Peterson Farm and Livestock
and have gained popularity for their agrithemed Parody Music Videos, “I’m Farming
and I Grow It’ and “Farmer Style” on You
Tube.
The brothers will be at the FFA Career Show
on Friday, April 19, 2013 and performing
and addressing the convention at the Third
General Session at 1:30 that same day.
Their message is clear, according to Greg:
They want to promote agriculture for what it really is and furthermore they
believe that people need to know where their food comes from. "People need to
know who farmers are," he said. " We are just trying to do our jobs and feed the
world."
The Peterson Farm Brothers will bring their unique and fresh style to Missouri
and share their passion for advocating for agriculture. Their message is relevant:
Agriculture is important!.

Fourth General Session – Friday, 5:30 p.m.
Harriet Turk
For more than 20 years, Harriet Turk has challenged her

perspective regarding leadership, loyalty and living fully.
Powerful, engaging and insightful, participants leave her
programs with a clear, practical, message about healthy
lifestyles—believe in yourself and the value of your life!
Most speakers come from a particular field of expertise. Their training is so brandspecific that they are unable to cross over into different fields. Not so with Harriet
Turk. Since 1985, Harriet has worked as a: Probation officer, Youth Programs
Coordinator, Flight Attendant, Pharmaceutical Sales Representative, College
Professor and professional speaker, trainer, and consultant.
Why different positions in several different fields? Harriet is intrigued by many
different careers and loves to work with people. While each position had very
different roles, there was one underlying appeal: Connecting with others.
Harriet pulls no punches and connects with her audiences because she ”tells it like
it is.” As inspiring as her message is, Harriet doesn’t give participants unrealistic
hope. By reinforcing the concept that we all possess personal power, participants
learn that while they might be in charge of their choices, they don’t always get
to choose the consequences. Learning how to cope with failure and try again are

 Missouri has the 5th highest rate of childhood food insecurity in the nation.

Honor Show Feeds, & Zoetis Animal Health
(southwest corner of the Career Show)
We will be hosting the interactive game Purina Show Jeopardy. Win great prizes,
have fun and learn some basics of the care and feeding of show animals. FFA
advisors may also register to attend a free Livestock Show seminar at the Purina
Research Center Gray Summit Missouri in June. Adults: Stop by the Bob McCosh Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac, Inc., booth to register

A computer or similar electronic device will be presented to a lucky FFA member
and an advisor. Tickets are at special FFA Star Club exhibitor booths. The drawing
is at 3:00 p.m. on the FFA Talent Stage. Other prizes may also be awarded by
exhibitors. Members must be present to win.

for character and they will learn how it can keep their ship afloat.

June 4-6, 2013 – University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg
G
et the competitive edge! No matter if you are getting ready for your first speech
or your 10th speech - come get the training to take your speech to the next level at
Missouri FFA Public Speaking Academy. Instructors Dr. Terry Cunconan and Dr. Wendy
Geiger from the University of Central Missouri’s Speech Communication Department
will help you build confidence, gain speech writing and presentation skills, and get
equipped to answer questions. During this three day program, you will receive one
on one coaching, participate in group activities, and compete in the academy speech
contest.

be received by May 15, 2013 and must be accompanied with the $140 registration
fee, which includes conference materials, lodging, and six meals. Participation will

HE LEADERSHIP ADVENTURE is for students who want to learn the basics of self-discovery
and understanding their leadership potential. It will help them create a plan for
lasting impact on the world through utilizing personal leadership traits and healthy
relationships to make their goals a reality.
The program is designed specifically for FFA members’ personal leadership
development and planning for future success.
•
The cost per student for each Conference will be $60, which
includes lunch.
•
Participants will receive the same training at each location.
•
Training will be targeted toward grade level in high school.
•
Training will be conducted by Past National FFA Officers Andrew
McCrea and Corey Flournoy, and the 2013-2014 State FFA Officers.
The Leadership Adventure will be offered this year as a One-Day Conference at each of two locations:
•
The COLUMBIA Conference will be WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and held
at the MU BRADFORD RESEARCH AND EXTENSION CENTER, Columbia.
•
The SPRINGFIELD Conference will be FRIDAY, AUGUST 2, 2013, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and held
in the BOND LEARNING CENTER at the MSU DARR AGRICULTURAL CENTER, Springfield.
Registration will be limited to the first 175 registrations received for each location.
Advisors are encouraged to attend with their students. THE DEADLINE FOR
REGISTRATION IS JULY 22, 2013.

he FFA Area Officer Institute is being offered for the ninth time this summer for all
incoming Area FFA Officers and Area Advisors. Designed to build strong officer
teams and develop the leadership skills officers will need during their year of service,
this is one of the most highly rated leadership workshops in the state. Topics include
team building, planning banquets, introducing speakers, presenting awards, preparing
and presenting workshops, tips on interviewing, and communicating with others. See
your local FFA advisor for more details.

amp Rising Sun, located at the Lake of the Ozarks, will again be the site of this
year’s summer leadership training programs and recreational activities for Missouri
FFA members. This camp operates for six consecutive weeks with over 1300 FFA
members participating each year.
