Once upon a time there was a fine pigeon who used to live on a nest close to a kitchen. The cooks
of the kitchen used to like her very much and often used to feed her with grain. She liked the
place and her life was fine. One day a crow saw the pigeon and saw how it was getting wonderful
food from the kitchen. Then one day he made friends with the pigeon and under the pretext of
friendship, he somehow made the pigeon to share the nest with him. The pigeon told the crow that
they could spend time together discussing politics, religion etc but when it came to food both had
their own ways. She suggested the crow to search for his own food. But the crow was impatient
as the very reason he had made friends with the pigeon was for the food. The crow wanted meat
and all the pigeon got was grains from the kitchen. It could not wait any longer and ultimately
decided
that
he
visit
the
kitchen
directly
for
the
food.
Thinking so, he stealthily crept down the chimney into the kitchen. He got the smell of a fish
being curried on the pan. He got greedy and went ahead and tried to get the fish. But in the
process he disturbed a ladle, and created a noise. This alerted the cook who was in the
neighboring room and he caught hold of the crow and killed it.

The Stonecutter
Once upon a time there lived a stonecutter, who went every day to a great rock on the side of a
big mountain and cut out slabs for gravestones or for houses. He understood very well the
kinds of stones required for the different purposes and as he was a careful workman he had
plenty of customers. For a long time he was quite happy and contented and asked for nothing
better than what he had. Now in the mountain dwelt a spirit which now and then appeared to
men and helped them in many ways to become rich and prosperous. The stonecutter, however,
had never seen this spirit and only shook his head, with an unbelieving air, when anyone spoke
of it.
One day the stonecutter carried a gravestone to the house of a rich man and saw there all sorts
of beautiful things, of which he had never even dreamed. Suddenly his daily work seemed to
grow harder and heavier and he said to himself: "Oh, if only I were a rich man, and could sleep
in a bed with silken curtains and golden tassels, how happy I should be!" And a voice
answered him: "Your wish is heard; a rich man you shall be!"
At the sound of the voice the stonecutter looked around, but could see nobody. He thought it
was all his fancy, and picked up his tools and went home, for he did not feel inclined to do any
more work that day. But when he reached the little house where he lived, he stood still with
amazement, for instead of his wooden hut was a stately palace filled with splendid furniture.

he Wedding Procession of the Rag Doll and the Broom Handle and Who Was in It by Carl
Sandburg The Rag Doll had many friends. The Whisk Broom, the Furnace Shovel, the Coffee
Pot, they all liked the Rag Doll very much.
But when the Rag Doll married, it was the Broom Handle she picked because the Broom Handle
fixed her eyes.
A proud child, proud but careless, banged the head of the Rag Doll against a door one day and
knocked off both the glass eyes sewed on long ago. It was then the Broom Handle found two black
California prunes, and fastened the two California prunes just where the eyes belonged. So then the
Rag Doll had two fine black eyes brand new. She was even nicknamed Black Eyes by some people.
There was a wedding when the Rag Doll married the Broom Handle. It was a grand wedding with
one of the grandest processions ever seen at a rag doll wedding. And we are sure no broom handle
ever had a grander wedding procession when he got married.
Who marched in the procession? Well, first came the Spoon Lickers. Every one of them had a tea
spoon, or a soup spoon, though most of them had a big table spoon. On the spoons, what did they
have? Oh, some had butter scotch, some had gravy, some had marshmallow fudge. Every one had
something slickery sweet or fat to eat on the spoon. And as they marched in the wedding procession of
the Rag Doll and the Broom Handle, they licked their spoons and looked around and licked their
spoons again.
Next came the Tin Pan Bangers. Some had dishpans, some had frying pans, some had potato
peeling pans. All the pans were tin with tight tin bottoms. And the Tin Pan Bangers banged with
knives and forks and iron and wooden bangers on the bottoms of the tin pans. And as they marched in
the wedding procession of the Rag Doll and the Broom Handle they banged their pans and looked
around and banged again.
Then came the Chocolate Chins. They were all eating chocolates. And the chocolate was slippery
and slickered all over their chins. Some of them spattered the ends of their noses with black chocolate.
Some of them spread the brown chocolate nearly up to their ears. And then as they marched in the
wedding procession of the Rag Doll and the Broom Handle they stuck their chins in the air and looked
around and stuck their chins in the air again.
Then came the Dirty Bibs. They wore plain white bibs, checker bibs, stripe bibs, blue bibs and bibs
with butterflies. But all the bibs were dirty. The plain white bibs were dirty, the checker bibs were
dirty, the stripe bibs, the blue bibs and the bibs with butterflies on them, they were all dirty. And so in
the wedding procession of the Rag Doll and the Broom Handle, the Dirty Bibs marched with their
dirty fingers on the bibs and they looked around and laughed and looked around and laughed again.
Next came the Clean Ears. They were proud. How they got into the procession nobody knows.
Their ears were all clean. They were clean not only on the outside but they were clean on the inside.
There was not a speck of dirt or dust or muss or mess on the inside nor the outside of their ears. And
so in the wedding procession of the Rag Doll and the Broom Handle, they wiggled their ears and
looked around and wiggled their ears again.

The holiday of Thanksgiving was born from the Puritan settlement of Plymouth, on the coast of
present-day Massachusetts.
Puritan separatists, desperate for religious freedom, left England in 1607 for the Netherlands under
increasing pressure from the crown to conform. Although they were allowed religious freedom, they
were not granted citizenship in the Netherlands, and hence, could not secure meaningful jobs and were
restricted to those that were low-paying and unskilled. Some Puritans, disheartened by the drifting of
their children from the church, made arrangements with the Merchant Adventurers (a London jointstock company) to relocate to America. Payment for their passage was made in exchange for future
repayment and a percentage of future profits made by the settlement.
35 Pilgrims (as they would come to be known) boarded the Mayflower with 67 other passengers and
set sail for Virginia on September 16, 1620. The treacherous voyage across the stormy Atlantic Ocean
lasted 10 weeks. When the Mayflower finally approached America, it was nowhere near Jamestown or
even Virginia. On November 11, 1620, the Mayflower reached land off present-day Cape Cod. Some
historians believe the Mayflower never intended to sail to Virginia, but rather had secretly planned to
sail to New England. Many of the passengers threatened mutiny because they were supposed to be
brought to Virginia. As a result, the Mayflower Compact was drafted which guaranteed the equal
treatment of all settlers in the new colony. The Mayflower Compact further documented the colony's
continued allegiance to England, but also called for the establishment of an independent, civil
government.
The Compact was signed by 41 male passengers and the decision to remain at Plymouth, rather than to
spend more time at sea was made. The settlers organized themselves into a group known as the
Council of New England. The council promised one hundred acres of land to those settlers who
remained at Plymouth for seven years. The Mayflower and its passengers explored the coast of
Massachusetts for several weeks before finding the perfect spot at Plymouth on December 21, 1620.
Life in Massachusetts was difficult for the settlers. Half of the original passengers on the Mayflower
died of disease, starvation, and the harsh Massachusetts winter. Unlike Jamestown, however, Indian
attacks were not a constant threat. Rather, the local Wampanoag Indians were responsible for the
survival of the colonists. Squanto, who was kidnapped and had experienced life in Europe as a slave
and later as an observer of European culture in a monastery, had recently returned to Massachusetts
only to find his former village ravaged by death and disease. He assimilated into the Wampanoag
village located at Plymouth and later joined the Pilgrim colony at Plymouth when they learned he
could speak English. Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to establish friendly relations with the Indians
and how to plant crops, fish, and trap mammals for the fur trade. If it wasn't for Squanto, the
Wampanoag‘s and their sachem Massasoit, all of the settlers would have surely perished. One year
after the landing of the Mayflower, the surviving Pilgrims celebrated their first fall harvest with a
prodigious feast. They invited 91 of their Indian neighbors. The feast was the first ever Thanksgiving.

1. When I learned that my 71 year old mother was playing scrabble against herself, I knew I had
to do something.‖Who‘s playing?‖I asked one day when I saw a half – finished game on the

2. It also marked the beginning of an unusual teaching assignment for me. I‘ve taught children
and adults of all ages but never thought I would be teaching my mother to do anything. Despite
the look of horror on her face when she first saw our gift, my mother was eager to get started.
She sat mesmerized as the screen lit up and the various icons presented themselves. Slowly but
surely, my mother caught on, making notes in a little spiral book. I wondered how she‘d fare
without me. Thereafter, she only spoke on her game on the computer to me. She even forgot to
ask her stock question, ―What did you have for supper?‖ It was no longer on the agenda.
Instead she talked about RAM, ROM and the CPU- terms spilled effortlessly from her mouth.

3. My mother isn‘t the only one experiencing a personal growth spurt. Thanks to the computer,
my father has finally overcome his phone allergy. For as long as I can remember, any time I
called, my mother would answer. Then, after a couple of months ago, I heard dad‘s gruff voice
on the phone. ―Why didn‘t mum answer?‖. ―She‘s on the computer.‖ My father and I have had
more conversations in the last two months than we‘ve had in the previous 20 years. After a
lifetime of being her child, I was finally the one with knowledge to share with my mum. But
even now, I realize that she continues to teach me. I am learning that no matter how old you are

The worst days of any summer are the rainy ones. We spend all year looking forward to nice weather
and long, hot days. All of winter, with its dreary gray days and bitter cold, we dream of those endless
days at the beach, lying on the sand and soaking in the bright and burning sun. And then, summer
comes, and it rains.As a child, I would wake up to rainy summer days and come close to crying. It
wasn‘t fair. We suffered through months of school and miserable weather for those scant ten weeks of
freedom and balmy weather. Any day that I could not spend at the beach or playing ball with my
friends seemed like a punishment for something I didn‘t even do.
On those rainy summer days, I had nothing fun to do and could only sit inside, staring out at the rain
like a Dickensian orphan. I was an only child, so there was no one else to play with. My father worked
from home, soI was not truly alone, but he could not actively play with me since he was technically at
work. It was those days that I would resign myself to whatever was on television or any books that I
could find lying around. I‘d crawl through the day and pray eachnight that the rain would not be there
the next day.
As an adult, though, my opinion of summer rain has changed. When you have to work every day,
summer is not as eagerly anticipated. Mostly, the days run together, bleeding into each other so that
theyno longer seem like separate entities and instead feel like continuations of the same long day.
Everything seems monotonous and dull, and an ennui or listlessness kicks in. Such a mindset makes
you cheer for anything new or different. I spend the winter dreaming of summer and the summer
dreaming of winter. When summer comes, I complain about how hot it is. And then I look forward to
the rain, because the rain brings with it a cold front, which offers a reprieve-admittedly one that is all
too short—from thetorture of 100° and humid days. Rainy days are still the worst days of the summer,
but summer rain today means positively beautiful—and considerably cooler—weather tomorrow.
