Waste bin with foot pedal: The pedal mechanism did not work in two of the sixteen products
Whether in the office, bathroom
or kitchen: Pedal bins must put
up with a certain amount of wear
and tear, in particular the lid
opening mechanism. The test
demonstrates: Only a few of the
bins are robust. The results show
that overall, plastic is better than
metal.
Only a few of the bins are robust.
The results show that overall,
plastic is better than metal. K-Tipp
tested just how well pedal bins
stand up to daily use. All 16
products tested have a hinged lid
that can be opened with a foot
pedal. This means that the user has
both hands free when filling and
emptying the waste bin. But which
bin is the most stable and also
easiest to use? Can the Swiss
standard size waste bags be placed
in them easily? Engineers at the
PZT laboratory tested bins for KTipp. Of these, eight small bins had
a capacity of up to 20 litres and
eight larger models had a capacity
of up to 40 litres.
Several plastic models with antislip covering
Result: Flexible plastic has distinct
advantages compared to metal.
These containers are lighter, less
sensitive to knocks and do not rust
in damp surroundings. In addition,
light plastic models do not slide
away more quickly than heavy
metal bins when the foot pedal is
operated. The reason: Some of the
bins have a base covered with antislip material.
Both test winners, "Deco Bin" (up to 20 litres) from Curver and the Rotho "Paso" (up to 40 litres) were
awarded the total grade "very good". There were still some differences:
The Curver product is easier to empty than the large "Paso". The lid cannot be completely opened in
the Paso model. On the plus side, the workmanship is much better than on the smaller Curver bin.
The experts found fault with the edges on this, since. The manufacturer carried out follow-up controls
and has promised to rectify the defects as quickly as possible.
Broken spring in the Hailo "Top Design"
Both test winners are extremely robust: The outer cover and pedal mechanism did not show signs of
wear and tear even after fatigue and shock testing. This was not the case with most of the other
waste bins: Some of them had dents and signs of abrasion to the material. The lid spring in the "Top
Design" Hailo pedal bin broke shortly before the end of the foot pedal fatigue test. The lid did not
close by itself afterwards. The Rotho "Mono" model did not keep going that long. The plastic broke
in one area, so that the hinge mechanism could no longer be operated. Hailo writes that the broken
spring "does not comply with our quality standards". Last year, the spring supplier delivered a faulty
batch - this however has already been scrapped. Hailo promises:
"Despite this, if any bins having faulty springs have been supplied to the market, we will replace
them free of charge.
Rotho informs that to date they have not received any negative feedback on the "Mono" model. If
parts become broken, Rotho will replace the whole bin free of charge. No parts broke during the test
on the 40 litre Brabantia "Pedal Bin". However, the rods made squeaking and clunking noises, and
after a time the hinge mechanism stiffened. Brabantia states that the bins have a ten-year
guarantee. The company was "astonished" when they received the results of the fatigue test.

Distinct dents in four waste bins
The housing is too thin in some of the bins. For example, the steel ball resting on the housing of the
Landi model during a test had already caused permanent indentations. When the ball was then
allowed to fall onto the housing from a height of 2 cm and 4 cm, it caused distinct dents. Similar
results occurred with the bins from Migros Do It + Garden, Mazzei Mondex and Bauhaus. Migros
wants to discuss the key points with supplier. The tested pedal bin is an "entry-level product in terms
of price". However: The 30 litre capacity Migros bin, costing Fr. 59.90 is far from being the most
reasonably priced of the tested products. Both test winning products cost considerably less.
How the test was done
How robust are
medium-sized and
large waste bins
having hinged lids
and pedals? How
easily can the
different models be
emptied and
standard sized waste
bags fitted into
them? These aspects
were the focus of the
K-Tipp test
conducted by the
PZT technical
laboratory in
Wilhelmshaven
(Germany). The
following were tested
specifically:
Robustness of
mechanical parts
For each model, the
foot pedal was
operated 13,000 times
in the hydraulic test rig
- at 5 second intervals.
The number 13,000 is
derived from opening
and closing a waste
bin ten times daily with
a pedal for three and a
half years.
Impact sensitivity of
housing
Three tests in the test
rig with a 5 kilo semisteel ball. The sizes of
dents and buckles
were measured once
with the ball resting on
the housing, once after
a fall from a height of 2
cm, once from a height
of 4 cm.
Workmanship
Do the bins have
sharp corners and
edges?
Suitability for damp
rooms or outside
areas
Spraying the bin and
mechanical parts with
a salt solution, from
the outside and the
inside. The areas of
corrosion (metal parts
damaged) were
compared after the
bins had been left for 7
days.
