stock I was accepted as a football lineman, a heavy weight
wrestler and a shot-putter. My
size gave me the popularity but
it was the nerds in the art room
that got my attention and devotion. I watched a lot of Saturday morning cartoons. Went
to Mankato State University as
one of the first football /artists.
Most of my professors from college have now become my
mentors as a director at Owatonna Arts Center and the
Waseca Art Center they are my
best resource. In the arts we
can’t hurt each other…only
help. Beside MSU I spent two
years in the animation department of Walt Disney in Florida
as an apprentice in animation
during the “Beauty and the
Beast” time frame. My influences are Walt Disney, Salvador Dali, and Gary Larson
(cartoonist of the FAR SIDE.)”

So I heard at coffee that
there was a new face at the
Waseca Arts Council. I sent
Scott Roberts an e-mail and
asked him to tell us about
“Him” and where he came
from? Here’s what Scott had
to say. “I moved to Mankato

Writing stories for Antonio and the Good
News Magazine has brought me to meet
many different folks and businesses. Last
week I walked into the new location of Healing Hands Wellness Group. Now located at
201 South State Street in Waseca. As I
walked in I could not get over the beauty of
the building and the aroma of calmness and
relaxation.

So tell me what are your goals
for the Waseca Arts Council? “I
need people to understand
that art is personal. Not everything that the WAC has will fit
everyone's idea of what is their
idea of art. But we also try to
educate what you may see as
not your cup of tea might be
exactly what the person next to
you sees as the perfect piece.
My goal is to show how art is in
every part of the community
and is that small part of everything that makes us happy. It’s
called quality of life.” Scott
stated. “As far as what I need
to reach my goals for the WAC,
if I said money it would be
cliché. What I need is PEOPLE!
Volunteers, members and patrons. This is not the “Art World
According to Scott” this is the
Waseca County and Southern
Minnesota Arts community. I
will do my best to open the
communities’ eyes and also
hopefully surprise them.”
I love the enthusiasm. Take
time to visit the WAC.

Bad Report
Card?
By
Kim Harty
Contributing Writer to the
Good News Magazine
Several months ago we received a call from a pet owner
wondering if we groom “evil
Chihuahuas.” Her Pepe, was
banned from yet another
grooming shop. It was suggested to her that Pepe would
need sedation at a veterinarian’s office in order to be
groomed.
As a Chihuahua mom, I know
firsthand they can react to
stressful situations with signs of
fear and possibly aggression. It
was possible that Pepe was
overwhelmed at the previous
groomers and in a less stimulating atmosphere, such as our
salon, he might behave. It was
with that thought we agreed to
groom him. We have been
grooming him ever since.
Why did Pepe go from evil to
pleasant in short order? The
truth is, it is not what I have, it is
what we lack.
We do not have:
A stream of people coming in
and out throughout the day.
Ringing phones.
Other dogs and/or cats.
Several dryers on at the same
time.
Pets on grooming tables
across from each other.
Groomers walking past each
other with pets.
Vacuum cleaners running
with pets present.
Many different scents from
shampoos to fragrances filling
the air.
All of these distractions have
the potential to over-stimulate
even the calmest of pets. As a
salon owner, we factored the
following to help minimize the
effects of normal day to day
operations.
We have based our environment around factors that include, Color, De-Cluttering,
Scent, Sound and lighting. All
having bearing influences on
the dogs and us groomers.
Positive Energy
Did you know that happiness
is contagious? That’s because
our body secretes endorphins
when we are happy. On the
flip side, anger is a heavy energy that does not seem to dissipate. Both moods can infect
those around you.
Turns out that Pepe was never
an evil Chihuahua. Maybe a little misunderstood and definitely overwhelmed. He is an
easy groom and his mom is
very appreciative that her little
baby is well taken care of. And
this is what we strive for.
Happy client, happy
pets.

While I was selling pizza by the
slice from Grandpa Mike’s Pizza
Rig and watching the CP Holiday Train Pete Madel III stop up
with his son for a quick visit.
That’s where I found out that
he had purchased SNAP Fitness
in Waseca. Of course I had to
ask why?
“We have been looking to diversify for awhile. We looked at
a number of options but never
found one that was the right fit.
When Snap corporate decided to sell the local location
it immediately piqued our interest. It is obviously tied in to the
health industry so we felt comfortable that our backgrounds
would give us a good base
from which to work. Corporate
SNAP admittedly hadn’t put a
lot of time into the business
Pete Madel Jr. (left) and son Pete Madel III (right)
over the past few years and we
felt local ownership would give
the club the attention it has
been missing,” Peter stated.

We plan on adding more fitness classes and sports specific
training programs. If you want
to increase how far you can hit
a golf ball, we will be able to
help. If you are a young person
who wants to increase your
strength and speed so you can
better compete in sports, we
will have a program for you as
well. We will also have experts
in nutrition working with us
closely and will offer classes on
healthy eating,” Madel continued.
How does SNAP Fitness fit with
your other businesses? “In our
other businesses we are in the
health care field. We view this
business as being in the health
promotion field. While we
aren’t saying that if you join a
fitness center that you will be
healthy your own life, the data
suggests that if you lead an active lifestyle and eat well, you
significantly
increase

changes of leading a healthy
life. If you spend some time with

Something we can all enjoy
after a busy holiday season.
I’m impressed I thought to myself. What a wonderful remodel job! I reached the front
counter to be greeted by Jane
Dunn and this is what I found
out.
Healing
Hands
Wellness
Group was established in 2002
by Jane Dunn and Linda Grant.
Jane Dunn had previously
started her own business in
1991 as a massage therapist.
The concept was based on inspiration from Dunn’s Aunt
Helen Dooley who was a naturopath and registered nurse in
California. Every time Jane
wanted to leave Waseca, her
Aunt Helen repeatedly told her
that, “Waseca needs to be
healed and that is what you
are called to do”.
In 2002 Dunn, who also had
experience in the death industry as a funeral director, pooled
resources with Grant who had
been the Director of the local
Hospice program. The idea of
having a group of alternative
complementary practitioners
that shared a common space
was born! Grant went to massage school and joined Dunn
as a healing practitioner. Hua
Zhu, a licensed acupuncturist
was the first to join the group.
Hua also holds a medical degree and was a physician in
China. Jane Coleman was the
next to join. Her role was that
of a naturopath working with
holistic nutrition education. Unfortunately, her stay with the
group was short and that role
has been vacant until the present moment and is being resurrected by Tracy Jevning. In
2012 Theresa Welna began to
offer yoga services with Healing Hands; and that transitioned to Mollie Gfrerer and
Tracy Jevning as they became
the yoga instructors. Healing
Hands also provides Meditation
classes taught by Char Hesby,
OSF and threading (hair removal) provided by Barb Harvath.
Anne Byron, Jackie
Overland, Stacey Blouin and
Linda Maher are clinical massage practitioners and also do
energy healing via Reiki.
Healing
Hands
Wellness
Group began its work being located in the Beschnett Building
and in 2005 purchased and
moved to the historic Dr. Olejein home on North State
Street. The Mission Statement
defining Healing Hands Wellness Group is, “Providing individuals with an opportunity to
take responsibility for their own
health and well-being, mind,
body and spirit.”
I asked Jane how did Awaken
Vibrance come into the picture. “Tracy was a long-time
supporter of the Healing Hands
Yoga program. As mentioned
before, she and Mollie eventually became the primary instructors. As we all got to know
each other Linda and I expressed a desire to invite Tracy
to “play together” when she
finished her Master’s Degree in
Holistic Nutrition. In the spring
of 2014 Tracy and her husband
Mike purchased the building at
201 South State Street. Tracy in-

vited us to take a tour and expressed her vision of redoing
the building and recreating a
space conducive to a wellness
center. After much consideration Linda and I agreed that
this would be a great opportunity for expansion and growth
of our business and wellness in
this community. The goal of
the merging is to continue to
give the Waseca area and opportunity to BE WELL!” Jane
stated.
I wanted to find out a bit
more about Awaken Vibrance
so I asked Tracy Jevning to explain. By the way, Tracy is a
trained Yoga teacher; Reiki II
certified and has a Master of
Science in Health and Nutrition
Education.
Tracy said, “I
wanted to create a holistic
health center that offered a
dedicated yoga studio, holistic
health and nutrition consulting,
corporate wellness, meditation
and specialty classes and
practitioners for our region. It
was a good fit to share the
space of a newly created holistic health center with Healing
Hands because our vision of
helping people be well was the
same.” Jevning went on to
say, “So many people are not
feeling well, don’t have energy, can’t sleep at night, are
stressed out and eating nutrient
poor foods that are causing
chronic illness and disease.
When it comes to health and
wellness the whole person must
always be considered. Balancing our mind, body, spirit, emotions is essential to striving
towards optimal health. We
cannot separate one from the
other and be truly vibrant and
thriving.”
The new center is located at
201 South State Street in
Waseca.
Across from El
Tequila. It would be worth a
visit from all of us.

Recently, when researchers
compared the medical evidence for and against every
mainstream diet (low carb, low
fat, low glycemic, Mediterranean,
mixed/balanced
(DASH), Paleolithic, vegan, and
elements of other diets), no
diet single diet was proven
best.
The interesting part was the
study concluded that “a diet of
minimally processed foods
close to nature, predominantly
plants, is decisively associated
with health promotion and disease prevention.”
There is a growing wave of scientific evidence that the more
plants you can eat, the healthier you are! It’s because plants
fuel your body on a rich, cellular level. When you focus on
eating more plants, you aren’t
taking away processed sugar,
unhealthy cholesterol, animal
protein, cheese, and dairy

more from plants!

CLIMB Theatre

By Jill Courtney,
Director
CLIMB Theatre visited our
school this week! Their mission
is to create and perform plays,
classes, and other creative
works that inspire and propel
people–especially young people–toward actions that bene-
fit themselves, each other, and
the community. We were able
to bring CLIMB Theatre to TEAM

in
Waseca. Our students loved
the performance in their classrooms. Each classroom got to
participate in a 40 minute class
about self-control. Grades K-3
learned about a boy named
Joey and his first day of school.
Joey had a rough first day and
acted out for the students
some of the things he did. The
students were able to explain
to him the mistakes he made
and how to show better selfcontrol. Grades 4-6 worked in
groups to brainstorm situations
at home, school, the lunchroom, and the library where
they needed self-control. Then
they practiced how to stop
and think before they reacted.
The students enjoyed having
CLIMB Theatre at school and
they really took a lot away from
the presentations. This is the
second year we have been
able to have CLIMB Theatre
visit our school using a grant
from the E.F. Johnson Foundation and it is something we
hope to continue!
A Downtown
Facelift
By Mike Parry
Each week as I travel to different communities with Grandpa
Mike’s Pizza Rig I’ve been noticing one community that is having a face lift in its downtown
area.
I’m talking about
Janesville. I talked with Aaron
King, King Construction about
the projects. He’d told me how
great it was to see new begin-
nings in downtown Janesville
and was proud to be the con-
tractor. He thought I should
speak with Brando McCabe so
I talked with Brandon McCabe,
City Planner and he was excited by the fact that UC Labs
unified three store fronts downtown and then Patton, Halverson & Berg reviltilized a building
just a block north.

Both applied under the small
city grants program which unfortunately has expired On a
posititive note, the Janesville
EDC (Economic Development
Corportation) is working to con-
tinue such a program. Brandon
stated, “It helps tremendously
with community growth and a
business friendly atmosphere
downtown. Currently we are
working with BP for a second location as gas station, convenience grocery store at the south
end of town. All this helps
pulled travelers off Highway 14
into town.”
I get excited when I see businesses re-investing in their local
small town communities.

There are several things I’m
looking forward to in 2016:
Southern Minnesota Initiative
Foundation (SMIF), along with
the five other Minnesota Initiative Foundations are all celebrating our 30th Anniversary,
SMIF will be wrapping up our
strategic plan, and we’ll continue
to
foster
recently
launched programs.

Amidst all these forward-looking lists, I feel it’s also prudent to
pause to list things we have to
be grateful for from this past
year. Here is my 2015 Gratitude
List:
1. SMIF’s work toward a more
equitable, inclusive southern
Minnesota. We partnered with

We welcomed over 300 child
care providers to Owatonna
this fall to ensure they received
training to maintain their continuing education credits. Our
future generation depends on
educated, equipped caregivers.
4. The Entrepreneurial Bridge
Conference & Banquet. This
event brought together 125 individuals from 50 high-growth,
high-potential southern Minnesota businesses for networking and workshops at the
Hormel Historic Home in Austin
this fall. Already, one new Peer
Network has emerged from this
conference, focused on the
food sector.
5. The strengthening of SMIF’s
CC
local foods work. Supporting
local foods is a key component
to diversifying our region’s
economy. SMIF once again
was a lead sponsor for the 2nd
Annual Feast! Local Foods Marketplace held at the Rochester
Mayo Civic Center. This year it
drew more than 1,500 people
and 100 exhibitors, and 70 buyers.
6. The collaborative spirit of
southern Minnesota leaders
and residents. Our first Regional
Community Growth Initiative
spurred some great collaborative projects among the smaller
communities
surrounding
Rochester, notably SE MN Together’s work to address the
workforce shortage already affecting our region.
7. The ideal weather throughout the spring, summer and fall
led to a boom year for our region’s farmers and our rural
economies.

Say Hello to Irene Oliver
This month of January, 2016, brings us to introduce another of our
long-time residents, Irene Oliver.
Irene was born Irene Mary Oliver, January 31st 1916, during a
snowstorm in Iowa. If you paid attention to the date, that was 1 0 0
years ago!!! Her family moved from Iowa to Waseca when she was
5 years old and she has been here ever since. She had 2 brothers
and 2 sisters when her mother passed away. Irene was 9 at the time.
Her father remarried, and along with her step-mother’s baby boy,
soon came 2 more 1/2 siblings. Her father passed away when she
was 16.
Irene grew up on a farm and attended Sacred Heart School. After
graduation, she went on to community college in Mankato, where
she learned bookkeeping and shorthand. She then worked for
Borgen Chevrolet, Dr. Swenson (36 Years), and then another car
dealer, Hasselquist Pontiac Buick, in Waseca until she decided to
retire. (She says that she seems to be putting everyone out of
business!)
Over the years, Irene has spent time with friends playing bridge,
dancing, going to the theatre and traveling the 50 states and
beyond.
In July of 2005, Irene’s loved ones thought that it would be a good
idea for her to move to a retirement community, and we are glad
to say that she picked Colony Court! She says she likes it here
because there are so many options for living arrangements and she
can get assistance if she ever needs it.
When asked what her secret is to living to be 100, she said, îA
positive attitudeî.
I think it’s that and the fact that she still goes to the gym 3 times a
week!
We’re so glad to have you here, Irene!

My 2015
Gratitude List
(continued from page 16)
8. An informative regional bus
tour to our four westernmost
counties: Brown, Faribault, Martin, and Watonwan. Our Board
members from those counties
did a great job of lining up residents, businesses, and educators to give the Foundation’s
staff and Board a chance to listen in on areas of concern and
opportunity.
9. The fact that SMIF’s donor
base continues to be a source
of strength for the Foundation;
the Entrepreneur Fund hit $1
million with the support of
many long-standing financial
partners. We also strive to be
good stewards of the dollars
entrusted to us holding our administrative costs to 10%.
10. The good health of good
company. As Annie Dillard
said, “How we spend our days
is how we spend our lives.” I
feel fortunate to spend my
days surrounded by a loving
family, a dedicated staff and
Board, and many regional
partners working for a brighter
future.
While things are relatively
happy and healthy in our neck
of the woods, it’s also been a
noteworthy year marked with
pain and tension in our larger
world community. It makes me
all the more appreciative for
this chance to reflect on how
far we’ve come as we embark
on another year working together toward progress.
