THE ‘WILDERNESS ROUTE’ • STEINKJER – NAMSOS OR OVERHALLA 5
The ‘Wilderness Route’ is an alternative to Rv
17 between Steinkjer and Namsos. Vellamelen
– Homstad (gravel forestry roads): 78 km
A separate, detailed map available at the tourist
information in Steinkjer/Namsos.
Cycle via Beistad to Vellamelen. Exit Rv 17
at Vellamelen and follow the signs towards
Dalgård. Then follow Fjellveien and stay to
the left at the sign indicating Skomarka. The
first part of the route includes steep climbing
and is most suited to wheeling your bike. Nice
view of the Beistad Fjord. From here you head
into more wilderness area. Turn left on the
first actual road (no sign!). You pass a small
lake and ride through a landscape of forest
and marshes. You come across more houses
at Derås. From here it is possible to follow the
highway back to Namdalseid. We take the
road to the right towards the farm. Here there
are signs indicating the Bogn Fritidsområde
(i.e., outdoor recreation area). Follow the signs
towards Gryta. We keep on pedalling past
Liasetra. The rest area at Langvatnet Lake is
a nice place to take a little break. Statskog has
rental lodging available at Skatlandstrand, and
there is also a nice camping area here with a
grill and rest area facilities (must be reserved
well in advance). Follow the sign towards
Bangdalen. After about 40 min. of easy riding
from Skatlandstrand, we cross a bridge and ride
past a nice waterfall. Maintained “gapahuk”
(i.e., lean-to) on a hill. From here you can follow
the road to the left at the first crossing and
rejoin Rv 17 at Klinga. We turn right. The road
now runs adjacent to the Bogna salmon river.
You pass yet another wide waterfall that is
beautiful with a good flow of water. Follow the
sign towards Vesterå/Bangsjøen.
You pass Solem – a nice, cleared hill with
houses and cabins. After another 11 km you
come to a small shelter with a sign indicating
Vesterå to the left. Next comes a few kilometres
with climbing before you come to the open
and lush Grønnlidalen Valley. Look out for
flocks of sheep! Now you can pick up speed on
a downhill until the road levels off when you
reach Vesteråvannet – and we get on the road
taking us back to the where the houses are.
SIDE TRIPS
1 Skartlandseter, overnight accommodation.
Contact Statskog (Tel: + 47 07800 or visit www.

2 Aunfossen, 100 metres from the road, follow
the trail to the right along the waterfall for
Skatlandsstrand
about 50 min. Use caution, slight rough terrain
– steep down into the waterfall’s gorge.

NAMSOS - HEILHORNET: SOUTH
The route from Namsos to Heilhornet/
Nordland County Line can be ridden in a
variety of ways. We have included side trips
from the main highway Rv17 when possible.
NAMSOS - SALSNES - LUND - KOLVEREID: 78 km
Cycling is forbidden in the tunnel north on
Rv769 from Namsos city centre. Take Niels
Bjørums Street to the other side of the tunnel.
Slightly steep hills, but no through traffic.
After about 25 min. of biking from Namsos,
you reach the fjord and ride through idyllic
Vemundvik to Sørenget School. From here
to Lund, you will encounter hilly terrain at
times. Stop at the top of Salsnesfjell Mountain:
Climb up on the cliffs on the right side and
look out over the beautiful fjord and mountain
landscapes. From Salsnes there is ocean
view of the body of water called Folda. The
ferry crossing takes 25 min. Follow Rv 769
towards Kolvereid. An alternative is to ride
on a peaceful gravel road for the last stretch
in towards town centre. This road is almost
totally straight as you approach the church
and vicarage during the final kilometre. It
was intended that visitors be visible at a long
distance prior to arriving at the vicarage for
Sunday dinner.
SIDE TRIPS
1 Sørenget - Duna/Røyklibotn: It is possible to
experience some beautiful outdoor recreation
areas among the mountains and fishing lakes of

Marked foot paths from Setran Hyttegrend.
NAMSOS - OVERHALLA - HØYLANDET - SKRØYVDALSVEIEN - SALSBRUKET - GEISNES: 118 km
This is a demanding route without many rest
areas or opportunities to get supplies. Be sure to
bring along enough food and beverages!
Alternative 1: Namsos – Overhalla: You can
exit Rv17 out of Namsos when riding towards
Overhalla at the sign marked “Reinbjør”
before the bridge at Meosen. This gravel road
continues until Skage. Perhaps you’ll spot a
moose? You’re on a pedestrian/bike path until
passing Skage town centre and Hunn school.
Turn right past the school at the sign marked
“Mælen”. You can see the Namsen salmon
river from the road. You come back onto Rv
17 at Øyesvoll, a couple of kilometres before
Overhalla town centre.

NAMSOS - HEILHORNET: NORTH
View from Galtneset
Alternative 2: Namsos – Overhalla:
Bike to Spillum and follow the signs where
the road exits towards Oppdal. The asphalted
road Fv 401 follows the Namsen River and this
popular salmon river looks especially beautiful
from the south side! Ride over the bridge to
Overhalla town centre and Rv17. Turn right
just north of Høylandet town centre and follow
the signs to Rv 776 towards Salsbruket and
Setran Hyttegrend (i.e. cabin area). There is a
consistent climb along asphalt roads. This is a
mountain pass with wild and beautiful natural
areas. Be cautious of curves in tunnel with
no lights! On the way down on the other side
you will pass the Skrøyvdalsfossen waterfall
– which is a beautiful sight when at maximum
size. You pass through Salsbruket town centre.
Ferry crossing to Hofles: 5 min. Follow the
other route descriptions towards Kolvereid.
(See map page 6).
From Kolvereid you follow Rv 770 eastward
until exiting onto Rv 771 and then proceed
north all the way to Bogen, innermost in the
Årset Fjord. The rest area here is idyllically
situated near a lake on the right hand side
just before you reach Naustbukta (store). Not
marked. Look for the side road. There is a steep
climb from Naustbukta. You can then enjoy the
gradual downhill ride that awaits you – and
the beautifl fjord lanscape on the way to Bogen.
From here you follow Fv 802/Rv 17 the final
kilometres to Heilhornet Gjestegård. Spend a
day here – and climb Heilhornet (1058 masl).
This is where the “Fairy Tale” coast begins – the
Helgeland Coast. Visit www. rv17.no/sykkel
for suggested routes along the Helgeland Coast.
SIDE TRIPS
9 Bogen – Leka: 14 km from the ferry dock at
Gutvik in Leka Municipality
10 Peak Walk at Heilhornet: Signs are posted 2
km beyond Heilhornet Gjestegård, when you
come to a parking area on the lef-hand side.
Well marked trail. 6 km each way. Hiking boots
are required. Magnificent views!

JØA ROUND-TRIP
There are various cycling routes on Jøa,
which are marked with signs and presented
separately. The following represents a roundtrip we have created based on a combination of
several distinct routes.
SEIERSTAD - SKJÆRVIK - HOLVIKA - FAKSDAL - TRANÅS - HOV - BRAGSTAD - FOSNES AND “GAMMELVEIEN” BACK TO SEIERSTAD: 30 km
From Seierstad to Faksdal: Follow the signs
along Jøamyran (i.e., the “Marsh Road”). As
the name indicates, this trip begins by passing
through marsh landscape. Make a stop at the
Torvmuseet (i.e., Peat Museum). You return
to the asphalted main road again just before
the exit at Faksdal. Follow the signs towards
Tranås and Bragstad. Fjord and ocean views
along the way. Keep an eye open for the guard
at the Iron Age excavation sites at Tranås!
Slight uphill towards a ravine. The view once
again reveals itself at the top of the hill. Rolling
hills and flat areas through an agricultural
landscape. Our tip: Head down to idyllic
Bragstad Harbour prior to taking Nordveien
to Fosnes. Nordveien has signs posted starting
at the parking area at Bragstad. Follow the
forestry roads and turn the left at the gravel
depot. Gravel road up through a narrow valley.
Take a rest on Kvilbakken, the highest point of
the route, just as the churchgoers did while they
rested there all the way back in the 1200s when
on their way to church at Fosnes. The ruins
of the little Middle Ages church are located
adjacent to today’s church. The marked view
point and rest area looking out over Folla Fjord
are a “must see” on a fair weather day. The
return trip goes quickly along county highway
fv 482 towards Seierstad. If you want to get
a real work-out, cycle via “Gammelveien”
(i.e., the “Old Road”) which takes you over
Hollonbakken, through forest-clad areas to
Seierstad. Proceed on the county road if you’re
interested in visiting the municipal centre
of Dun or Fosnes Bygdemuseum (i.e. rural
museum).

ABELVÆR – RØRVIK – “LANDNÅMSVEIEN” (“THE SETTLEMENT ROUTE”) 13
ABELVÆR - RØRVIK: 37 km
We begin at Abelvær, after taking the high
speed boat “Namdalingen” from Namsos
or Rørvik (daily service). Arrival at lunch
time. Abelvær is an idyllic area with white
houses and the ocean just beyond! There is a
convenience store in the former residence of
the fishing station’s owner and a home bakery
just around the corner. Take the time to stop
by Kjeksvika, look for the exit on the right
side after 500 metres. A nice place to take a
break if you want to eat a packed meal and
enjoy the beach. This bicycle trip takes you
through a diverse landscape full of Norwegian
cultural heritage and lots of ocean views.
Highways rv768 and rv769 junction around
the midway point. We continue on rv769 along
the “yttersida” or “outside route” in to Rørvik.
We follow along the seaward side for several
kilometres and get a glimpse of the windmills
on Hundhammerfjell Mountain on the other
side of the fjord. You will pass two bridges
on the way in to Rørvik. We recommend that
you use the sidewalks to cross over. From atop
Nærøysundbrua Bridge; the view towards
Rørvik city centre and out towards the ocean
is worth a quick stop. It can get fairly gusty
across the bridges when the wind kicks up. Use
caution!
SIDE TRIPS
1 Lighthouse and ocean view.
2 Britt’s Home Bakery; traditional Norwegian
foods “lefser” and “flatbrød”
3 Kjeksvika: About 2 km from the ferry dock,
Kjeksvika. Parking area and information
board (in the boat). Special area with heather
heath and flora of historical significance. Nice
beach 500 m past the parking area.
4 Kjetilhaugen: Signs posted to this site of
interest. Marked trail, 80 m. Burial mound,
Viking boat burial site.
5 Hundhammerfjellet: (237 masl) with some
of the world’s largest mass-produced windmills
about 8 km from Abelvær. Magnificent view
over the Namdal coastline on a clear day. Take
the exit towards Hundhammeren. You can
park just past the exit where the asphalt ends,
and take the “peak walk”. It takes about 20
min. to walk up. You can also bicycle up.
6 Lauga /Sverdrup Historical Monument;
Information board about Georg Sverdrup who
played an important role at Eidsvoll during
the passing of the Norwegian Constitution at
the national assembly in 1814.
7 Strandval, ceramics workshop and sales outlet. Gallery.

ROUND-TRIPS ON VIKNA
SHORT ROUND-TRIP: 10 km
Follow the signs from Rørvik city centre towards
Nesset Camping (the road Enganveien), riding
towards Lauvøya. It goes from asphalt to gravel
roads just ahead of the Aunet outdoor recreational
area. Stay to the left at the junction for Lauvøya
and ride over Klasmoen. After passing this little
hill, you take the quickest way back to Rørvik by
heading left. You can park your bike after a couple
of kilometres and take a walk up to Falkhetta, 146
masl. This takes you to a lofty height relative to the
Vikna landscape, and gives you an excellent view
of Vikna. After a climb to the top, you can quickly
coast down towards Rørvik city centre and use the
rest of the day getting to know the coastal culture.
6 Swimming Area on Reipholmen: Follow the
exit towards the airport and turn left at the
first exit. Follow the sign to the Norwegian
Halibut aquaculture facility, about 2.5 km.
Beautiful beach. Short distance to ruins of a
German coastal fortress from WWII
7 Nærøysund Fyr (Lighthouse): If you would
like to sit on a peaceful dock, enjoy you lunch
pack and dangle your legs – take a walk out to
the lighthouse at Nærøysundet. The Coastal
Express “Hurtigruten” passes close by the
lighthouse between 20:00 and 21:45 daily
8 At the foot of the Nærøysundet bridge,
at the left side, in the curve. Just a few metres
to bunkers and canon positions. Excellent view.
LONG ROUND-TRIP: 30 km
Follow Enganveien and ride over Klasmoen as
described for the short round-trip. Follow the
signs towards Hansvika. After a slight uphill, you
will pick up speed as you head down towards the
shoreline again. You pass by Flerengstrand dock,
which serves as a depot for fish processing. Ride
along the shoreline about 500 m before proceeding
into a landscape of forest and marsh on the way to
Lødding. Head towards Rørvik at the junction at
Lødding. Ride among slight uphill and downhill
stretches for about 8 km before you again see the
fjord at Evenstad.
View from Falkhetta

LEKA ROUND-TRIP
THE LEKA ROUTE IS AN EASY RIDE AND A NICE ROUND-TRIP: 28km
This ride takes you around a mountain, which is
of geological interest. The cycling route starts on
Skei and follows the curve of the island along
highway rv562 – Leka’s main road. There is some
disagreement as to whether it is best to cycle this
route in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction.
This option will provide you with two slightly
different experiences. We choose to cycle counterclockwise. Follow the road from the auto-ferry dock
up to Vertshuset Herlaug. Keep on the road to the
left at the crossing and bike to the store at Husby
(Leka Tourist Information). Turn right at the sign
marked Kvaløy. The route passes through fertile
and green fields until you reach the mountain
pass at Lauvhatten. Here you will encounter an
altogether different and barren landscape – not
to mention a vast ocean! After passing Steinstind
peak on the left-hand side, stop and take a look
back. Notice the outline of the mountain formation
and use your imagination. You do see the Cocker
Spaniel resting there! Where the gravel road
becomes asphalt, you have an opportunity to
take the “shortcut” through Vassdalen Valley.
However, we recommend continuing further past
the cosy whitewashed houses towards idyllic
Solsemvågen. Here you ride past the enchanting
Solsemhula and enjoy a beautiful view of the ocean
in the direction of Vikna. After passing Haug, you
will enjoy a wonderful view of Frøviksundet and
can see across to the mainland.
SIDE TRIPS
1.The mountain ridge at Lauvhatten: Park your
bike and take a 10 min. peak walk up to the
right. Viewpoint.
2. Ørnerovet: 4.5 km from Husby. Information Board.
3. Solsemshula: Northern Europe’s first known
cave drawings. Well marked with signs. You are
only allowed to enter the cave during guided
tours in the summer or through advanced
reservations.
4.Bremneset Point: A stormy spot! Here you
get a real “feeling” of the open sea as the waves
crash upon the rocks. Show respect and use
extreme caution! Exit the road and go right
at Aunet (across from the mailbox and bus
shelter). Bikes must be wheeled along the last
part. The road passes through a farm yard.
5. Hiking trail network among Leka Mountain:
well marked network of trails up to Leka’s
highest point (418 masl) and the Herlaug’s
trail. Signs mark the starting points from the
top of little Trongan valley, from Briksdalen
and from Leknes.
6. Årdalsanden: 1.5 km from rave 562 down to
the island’s nice swimming beach
7. Lekamøya: Known sailing landmark (209
masl), which is referred to in the Viking Sagas
about the Trollfjell Mountains along the
Helgeland coast. About a 45 minute walk.
Enjoy the view of the ocean!
8. Madsøybrua Bridge: Idyllic fishing spot. 700
m from the main road.
9. Steinsenteret (Geological Centre): Exhibition
and sales of local and other varieties of rocks.
Check the opening hours.
10. Herlaugshaugen: The largest burial mound
in Norway where it is documented that people
were buried.
11. Skeinesset: Marked nature and cultural trail
towards the shipping lane and ocean.
12. Leka rural museum
Geological Path: The most interesting
geological finds are well marked with
information in several languages at several
spots around the island.

WE ARE CYCLING THROUGH/VIA...
LANDNÅMSVEGEN
SØR-GJÆSLINGAN
The stretch of highway Abelvær – Rørvik is marketed
under the name “Landnåmsveien” (“The Settlement
Route”). The name has it origin from the word
“landnám”, which originates from early Viking times.
It was used in connection with the Viking tradition
of voyaging abroad and occupying new land. In fact,
some of the first “Landnámsmenn” on Iceland came
from a large centre of Viking power at Ramstad,
Abelvær. Abelvær is a peaceful and picturesque village
and old fishing station with charming and idyllic
white houses. It is situated on the southern tip of
Abelværhalvøya Peninsula with Folla Sea just beyond.
This route truly provides riders with a naturally
beautiful landscape to behold, which is full of diverse
experiences.
The old fishing station of Sør-Gjæslingan is a summer
paradise. The facility is operated by the Coastal Museum
of Nord-Trøndelag. It is possible to rent an old-fashioned
fisherman’s cabin, which are still much like they were when
the fishermen crowded into them during fishing season.
SALSBRUKET
Salsbruket is a small village where the rivers meet the
fjord, which is characterised by its special industrial
history. In addition to a grocery store, café and several
options for overnight accommodation, you will also
find facilities such as farms open to visitors, marked
trails, boat and canoe rentals, freshwater, saltwater
and salmon fishing. Oplø Fjord, is an experience in
itself with its fur-tree covered islets typical of southern
Norway and smooth rocky shorelines.
JØA AND SALSNES
NORVEG, RØRVIK
Fosnes is the realm of poet Olav Duun. Jøa offers
visitors a fertile landscape filled with animal life. The
island also features maintained historical sites such as
Iron Age homesteads and burial mounds, sailing trips
with a traditional Norwegian wooden sailboat (Norw.
Åfjordsfembøringen) named “Siglurd”, a visit to the
local pub “Pøbben”, numerous good fishing spots and
nice places for tent camping. Rent a boat and explore
beautifully white, sandy beaches. Canoe rentals and
good rivers for paddling close to Salsnes Kro.
VIKNA AND RØRVIK
Vikna represents the last relatively flat island community
in the transition to the untamed nature of Northern
Norway. You don’t need to climb very high around
here to get a view of the open sea and island world
consisting of over 6,000 islands. Rørvik is the coastal
city of Nord-Trøndelag County where southand northbound Coastal Express ships (Norw.
“Hurtigruten”) meet each evening. The Centre for
Coastal Culture, “NORVEG”, and its unique architecture
has become the coast’s most spectacular landmark.
BRAKSTAD HAMN, JØA
LEKA
People have lived on Leka for at least 10,000 years.
We have traces of the first inhabitants of Leka in the
form of cave paintings, homestead ruins, remnants
of tools, burial mounds or hearths. The local farms
are relatively old, and many have been continuously
inhabited for more than 2,000 years. It is first and
foremost the geology of Leka, which makes this place
exotic. Its red “serpentine mountains” are particularly
well known.
SØR-GJÆSLINGAN
WE ARE CYCLING THROUGH/VIA...
NAMSOS
OVERHALLA
Namsos is the centre of commerce in Namdalen.
Some of Norway’s and “Trønder Rock’s” top artists
have grown up here; Prudence, Åge Aleksandersen,
Terje Tyskland, DDE, Askil Holm, Stein Ingebrigtsen,
etc. Namsos has its own “rock street” in Namsos
Storsenter (shopping centre) and the city is the natural
starting point for Island Hopping along the Namdal
coast or cycling on Kystriksveien. If you have some
spare time before riding on, you might try the “Two
Bridges” route – a maintained pedestrian and bicycle
outing along the city’s shoreline.
You are now in the Salmon fishing municipality in
Midtre Namdal. Ranemsletta is the municipal centre
and features a hotel, dining spots and shops. If you
want to try your luck at fishing – it’s possible to rent
equipment and go fishing from land or in a boat
equipped with oars – on both an hourly and daily
basis.
RANEM, OVERHALLA
HØYLANDET
NAMSOS
KOLVEREID
This is Norway’s smallest city! A small community
along the Folda Fjord with numerous service facilities
and cosy environmentally “green” streets. A final
stop for replenishing supplies as you head north or a
welcome stop for a comfortable rest or overnight stay
after a wonderful bike ride southwards along Rv 771
from Heilhornet.
The home of the Revue Festival, which is held every
other year. The last event is in July 2007. Agricultural
village with diverse hunting and fishing opportunities.
BANGDALEN/VESTERÅ - “THE WILDERNESS ROUTE”
The “Wilderness Route” is an alternative route to Rv
17 between Steinkjer and Namsos. The Norwegian
Forestry Service has developed a comprehensive
network of forest roads in connection with lumber
operations in the area, which are well suited to cycling.
The roads traverse the wilderness areas of Namdal,
and a very popular hunting area. The route crosses
parts of Bangdalen and Vesterå, which are in an area
that was previously characterised by mountain dairy
farming and lumber floating. This is a wilderness
area and home to numerous varieties of wild animals,
including bear and badger.
