Play opens Aug. 5 at Gulf Shores’ local theatre
Hwy. 59 in Foley will close during off-peak hours Aug. 8-9
Pedestrian bridge will be hoisted between towers north of Hwy. 98
A new Foley landmark is scheduled to be installed on the night of Aug.
8, when a pedestrian bridge will be hoisted into place between two towers located on Hwy. 59 just north of the intersection with U.S. 98. City officials say that on Aug. 8, Hwy. 59 is expected to be closed from roughly
8:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. the following morning to allow a crane to lift the
bridge into place, and again on Aug. 9 during the same hours for the pouring of lightweight concrete on the bridge deck.
The bridge will allow safe crossing for pedestrians over the busy highway. Stairs and elevators on each side provide access to the bridge. The
floor of the bridge will be 18 feet above Hwy. 59. The bridge was designed
to match other downtown landmarks, including Centennial Plaza, built in
Heritage Park to commemorate the city’s 100th birthday, and the columns
located along the Wilbourne Antique Rose Trail. The bridge was designed
by Sted McCullough of McCullough Architecture.
“I am very excited to see this project moving to completion,” said Foley
Mayor John Koniar. “It will be a big step forward for our downtown revitalization efforts and a have a positive impact on pedestrian safety. A
great addition to our community.”
A map showing the detour route will be available several days before
the highway closure. It will be available on the city website at cityoffoley.org, and also at Foley’s city hall, the Welcome Center and the library.
The bridge is a component of Foley’s TRIP (Transportation Regional Infrastructure Pedestrian System) plan, developed with citizen input to
make Foley a more pedestrian-friendly city. The bridge is one of three projects funded by a federal TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating
Economic Recovery) Grant, which the city received in 2013. Foley was
awarded $4.7 million, which required a 25 percent match, bringing the
project total to $6.3 million.
Other components in this project include almost 30 miles of new sidewalks and walking paths. An important section of pedestrian path currently under construction is located along the north side of U.S. 98,
running from Juniper Street to Hickory Street. A path located along the
east side of Hwy. 59 south of U.S. 98 is also under construction.
Additional components of the plan include pedestrian cross walks and
signals at major intersections. These will be installed along Hwy. 59 at
intersections with Azalea Avenue, Michigan Avenue and County Road 20.
Tickets are on sale now for the South Baldwin Community
Theatre’s six run production of Beauty & The Beast Jr., which
runs Friday, Aug. 5 thru Sunday, Aug. 14 at the Gulf Shores.
Friday and Saturday evening shows start at 7:30 p.m., and the
curtain rises at 2 p.m. for the Sunday matinees.
Featuring songs from the Academy Award-winning animated
film, this classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a
provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince
trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can
learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be
transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the
Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will
be doomed for all eternity.
Beauty & The Beast Jr. is the last of three Young Artist Series productions for the 2015-2016 season.
Director Jamie Barrow is not a newbie when it comes to
directing plays. She has also directed 101 Dalmatians, Don't

Commemoration of Battle of siege of Fort Morgan Aug. 6
A commemoration of the Battle of Mobile Bay and siege of Fort
Morgan is scheduled from 9 a.m. ‘til 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6 at
Fort Morgan Historic Site, located at 110 Hwy. 180 in Gulf Shores.
This one day living history event will remember the sacrifices of
the United States Armed Forces and Confederate States Armed
Forces during this pivotal naval battle and siege. Uniformed interpreters will bring the fort to life through demonstration of period drills on the fort's parade ground as well as artillery
demonstration at the water battery. Special talks given by the
site historians will provide insight into the events that transpired
as well as introduce topics little written about in books.
For more info, call 251-540-5257 or visit fort-morgan.org.
The Battle of Mobile Bay is one of the iconic confrontations of the
American Civil War at sea. During the three-day event, the fort’s
museum will feature rarely exhibited artifacts from three of the
fleet of ships engaged during the battle; the USS Tecumseh, USS
Philippi, and the CSS Gaines.
The USS Tecumseh, an ironclad ship widely thought to be unsinkable, sank during the Battle of Mobile Bay when she struck
a mine called torpedoes during the war. The ship capsized and
rests upside down northwest of Fort Morgan.
Union Admiral David Farragut, lashed to the rigging of his ship,
saw his fleet pulling back after Tecumseh went under. That’s
when Farragut yelled out his now famous order, paraphrased as,
“Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.”
The USS Philippi was set afire by Confederate artillery and destroyed while following Admiral David Farragut’s fleet into Mobile Bay. The CSS Gaines was heavily damaged during the Battle
of Mobile Bay and as she took on water became grounded within
500 yards of Fort Morgan.
Overlooking Mobile Bay, Fort Morgan went on to contribute during the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II.
Today, it stands as a testament to the work of seacoast fortifications and adaptations made by the U.S. Army. Pictured: Photos

At 67, Brent Burns kinda/sorta thinking about slowing down
Local trop rocker invites friends to join him on a fall tour of Ireland
Carol Smith shares a sunrise view from her balcony at Caribe.
“Painted by God, enjoyed by all,’’ Carol wrote.
“We found and released this little guy on Tuesday, July 19 in Perdido Key while staying at Perdido Sun,’’ writes Tyler Matthews.
“Heard it was a rare starfish. It was alive and well when we found
it tumbling in the surf and set it free about 3 minutes after finding it.’’
By Fran Thompson
Brent Burns says he would be comfortable if he
retired today.
He and Pam, his youthful wife of almost seven
years, already live in Craft Farms, where Brent,
at age 67, is still a youngster in the neighborhood
full of seniors.
Besides, most people would not consider what
Brent does for a living - writing songs and playing his music live all over the country - work.
And if it wasn’t for the getting there, the setting
up and the getting home, neither would he.
This Saturday, for instance, when he is driving
to the Pensacola Airport to catch a 6 a.m. flight to
play that evening in Ohio, he may have second
thoughts about his sometimes hectic schedule.
But don’t count on it.
“Really, I’m having the
time of my life,’’ said
Brent, who will be making his third trip to the
midwest to play since
March. “I’m pumped up
and ready to go. I talk
about slowing down, but
when the phone rings
and the offer is for a good
bit of money...
“I know I’m going to
have a good time when I
get there,’’ he adds. “But
the traveling is harder. I
still love it and I would
be bored without music.
It’s who I am. I look at it
like every time I go out, it’s two round trip tickets somewhere. That allows Pam and I to travel
and do bucket list stuff.’’
Yes, life is busy but good for Brent. Just last
month, he played a fest in Key West, and earlier
this summer, he traveled to France, Austria and
Southern Germany with Pam. “She doesn’t want
to go with me on the trips to gigs in Illinois,’’
Brent said, while also making it clear that marrying Pam has moved his needle nicely across the
turntable.
Brent is even hosting his own excursion to Ireland this fall. The Oct. 1-8 Brent Burns Gone
Irish Tour is Brent’s first trip to the Green Isle,
the birthplace of Pam’s grandmother.
“It’s also the first trip that has my name on it,’’
he said. Brent said there are still around six
seats left on the tour bus that can take 45
tourists comfortably around the country.
Brent is more familiar with all-inclusive resorts,
and he is also part of the musical line-up for next
April’s Rendezvous In Roatan at the Mayan
Princess Beach & Dive Resort in Honduras sponsored by the Oklahoma Parrotheads.
“I know just about everybody going on the trip
to Ireland,’’ he said. “I don’t want to call them
fans. In my world, they are friends from all over.’’
There will be 18 states represented on the Irish
tour bus. Fellow trop rocker Bob Karwin will also
be on the trip.
“I’ll probably pick up a guitar every day, and I’m
sure we’ll play a show in Dublin,’’ Brent said.
“Hopefully, we will also get to integrate some
with the local musicians.’’
Brent, a Purple Heart recipient and Pleasure Island’s official musical ambassador, also has another album in the works.
So much for slowing down.
“I’m not complaining. I have a great time working for great people when I get there. But it does
get a little tiring,’’ he said. “Sometimes I think I’d
just rather go to happy hour.’’
There will come a time when Brent is less the
road warrior and more the happy hour regular at
the Craft Farms clubhouse. But as long as songwriting royalty like Bill Whyte, Roger Sovine and
Bobby Weinstein are
willing to write songs
with him, he’ll buy the
beer and snacks for the
sessions.
“Roger was the top dog
in Nashville for a long
time, and all three have

“I’m just glad they find it

A song about the first

currently germinating
somewhere on the right

Brent doesn’t mention his 10 Trop Rock awards,
including Song and CD of the Year for 2012’s
"Don't Come Knockin' If The Tiki Hut's Rockin."
He’s too busy looking forward. He and Pam are
already planning a trip to Croatia next year.

Before celebrating a baptism,
the deacon approached the
young father and said solemnly,
“Baptism is a serious step. Are
you sure you’re prepared for it?”
“I think so,” the man replied.
“My wife has made appetizers
and we have a caterer coming
to provide plenty of cookies and
cakes for our guests.”
“I don’t mean that,” the deacon
replied. “I mean, are you prepared spiritually?”
“Oh sure,” came the reply. “I’ve
got a keg of beer and a case of
whiskey.”

I got a dog and named it
Twenty Miles. This way I can

A drunk stumbled out the door
of the bar. He stood on the corner waiting for the light. He
wife calls and asks if he is
drunk. The man replies, "Of
course not!"
Being suspicious that he is
drunk, she says, "Okay then,
tell me where you are and I will
come and get you."
The drunk replies, "I am at the
corner of WALK and DON'T
WALK!"

Boudreaux was feeling guilty,
so he went to confession. "Father, I kinda took a little lumber from that new construction
site."
Priest: "What did you do with
the lumber, my son?"
Boudreaux: "Well, Father, my
porch, she's had a hole for a
long time. I'm 'fraid someone
will break their leg, so I fix the
hole."
Priest: "Well, that's not so
bad."
Boudreaux: "Well, Father, I
had a little lumber left."
Priest: "What did you do with
it?"
Boudreaux: "Well, my poor
dog, Phideaux, he ain't never
had no place to get outta the
weather, so I make him his own
little doghouse."
Priest: "OK, anything else?"
Boudreaux: "Well, Father, I
had a little lumber left. So you
know, my truck, she ain't never
had no place to get outta de
weather either, so I make her a
two car garage."
Priest: "Now, this is getting a
little out of hand."
Boudreaux: "Well, Father, I
still had a little lumber left."
Priest: "Yes?"
Boudreaux: "Well, my wife, she
always want a bigger house. So
I add two bedrooms and a new
bathroom."
Priest: "OK! That's definitely
too much. For your penance, you
are going to have to make a
Novena. You do know how to
make a Novena, don't you?"
Boudreaux: "No, Father... But,
if you got the plans, I got the
lumber."

An old minister had all of his

New dentures were being made.
The first Sunday, using his
new dentures, he only preached
10 minutes. The second Sunday,
he preached only 20 minutes.
On the third Sunday, he
preached 1 hour 25 minutes.
When asked about this by
some of the congregation, he responded this way: “The first
Sunday, my gums were so sore
it hurt to talk. The second Sunday, my new dentures were
hurting me a lot. The third Sunday, I accidentally grabbed my
wife's dentures and I couldn't
shut up.”

would and he bought all 10 of

"That's wonderful," the artist
exclaimed. "What's the bad

"The gentleman was your doctor."

Police Dept. hosts Aug. 11 Kids’ Night Out at O.B. Waterfront Park
The Orange Beach Police Dept. will host a kids’ night out water
themed event on Thursday, Aug. 11 from 5-7 p.m. at Orange
Beach Waterfront Park on Canal Rd. Children should wear swim
clothes for a fun evening of “get wet’’ activities. Frozen treats, popcorn and drinks will be provided. For more info, contact the OBPD

Children’s Literacy Project tutor training Aug. 11 in Lillian
Although many of us told our children that if they could read,
they could accomplish anything, there are some children in Baldwin County who don’t get the support they need to be good readers. The Children’s Literacy Project has been
helping Baldwin County students for 20 years.
The 501(c)3 organization is looking for tutors to
help them continue their mission to increase
reading ability. The service is free to the students.
A Volunteer Tutor Information Session will be
held from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug.11 in
the Lillian Community Club.
Men and women who are interested in making
a difference to children are invited to attend. Volunteer reading tutors will receive materials, training and ongoing
support to help a child learn to read. To register and for information call (251) 929-8436 and visit AugustineLiteracyProject.com.
Join the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation on August 4 for a new event in downtown Foley to kick off the 19th Annual Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation Professional Rodeo scheduled Aug. 4-6 at The Foley Horse Arena. The rodeo benefits Peer
Helpers in Baldwin County. This year’s Kick Off Party will feature live music by
Brittany Bell and catering by LA BBQ. All of the entertainment will take place at
Bryant Bank in Foley and will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for the JCMF Rodeo KickOff Party are $50 per person and will include rodeo admission. Must be 21 and up
to attend the Kick-Off Party.
Also new to the Rodeo this year is reserved preferred seating. This will allow
guests to experience the action within twenty feet of the contestant gates and will
include a souvenir seat cushion. Limited reserved seating tickets are available for
$35 each on the JCMF website (JenniferMooreFoundation.com).
Rodeo action begins at 8 p.m. Aug. 4-6 at the City of Foley Horse Arena, with free
kid’s activities starting at 6 p.m. Rodeo tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for children
ages 4-12 years old, and free for ages 3 and under. General admission tickets will
be available each night at the gate.
All rodeo proceeds benefit the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides training, funding and support to 50 Peer Helper Programs
in 47 public and private schools across Baldwin County impacting the lives of children pre-k through 12 grade facing academic or personal struggles. For more info,
visit jennifermoorefoundation.com or call 251-971-3633.

Actor, pro footballer Stallings
is one of festival’s speakers
After stunning football campaigns in both high school
and college, T.C. Stallings
went on to play professionally in the Arena, Europe,
and Canadian leagues. Following his success in athletics, T.C.’s desires shifted to a
career in film and television.
In 2004, T.C. landed a spot on
Animal Planet's King of the
Jungle, a
reality
show in
which he
emerged as
the show's
champion.
He then
landed the
role of"T.J."
in the 2011
hit movie
Courageous.
A relocation to California
and three more film roles followed. But TC's career
reached new heights with his
break-out performance as
"Tony Jordan" in the 2015 hit
film, War Room. TC can also
be seen in national TV commercials. TC entered ministry in 2003, and has since
been a busy keynote speaker
in and out of the country. On
December 1, 2015, TC added
"author" to his resume by releasing his new book, "The
Pursuit: 14 Ways in 14 Days
to Passionately Seek God's
Purpose For Your Life." TC
is married to his college
sweetheart, Levette
Stallings. They have two children and make their home in
Southern California.

WHAT’S HAPPENING
Two of Hearts dares audience to stump the band
Lillian couple plays at Gulf Shores American Legion every Sat.
By Fran Thompson
Frank Baker’s love of music stretches all the way back to a childhood spent backing up the choir on guitar while he was still in
elementary school up near the music hotbed of Muscle Shoals.
After a career in the Navy, Frank took a civil service job with the
NAS Schools Command, giving him 45 years of military tenure in
one capacity or another. At that point - about 10 years ago - it
was time for Frank to chase the music that had been his passion
since childhood.
“All along, I would play in bands on the weekends,’’ he said. “But
after retiring, I decided it was my time, and I was going to do
what I wanted to do.’’
About that same time, Frank’s
wife Vicky, also a musician, retired from the state attorney’s office in Milton, and the Two of
Hearts do was hatched. The couple
has been playing music together
ever since, including a Saturday
evening 7-11 p.m. residency at
Gulf Shores American Legion Post
44.
A stellar player on any string instrument, including pedal steel
guitar (He often plays that instrument with Southern Star), Frank
is also comfortable around percussion and keyboards. He uses that
musical melange to merge his
recorded arrangements with live riffs from a variety of instruments to give Two of Hearts its unique sound.
“That merging of electronic and live creates a hybrid,’’ Frank
said. “Not too many people in this area do it. We build a basic
skeleton of a song and hang other tracks on as needed. We end up
being able to do with two or three people what would usually take
six, and it sounds good.’’
In addition to Saturday evenings in Gulf Shores, the Bakers
plays regularly at the Pensacola Beach Elks Club, the Nix Center
in Fairhope, and American Legion Post 99 in Foley.
“There aren’t too many places around here that we haven’t
played,’’ Frank said.
Frank says at one point during every Post 44 show, he challenges
the audience to a game of stump the band. “We say ‘you guys tell
us any song that comes to mind, and we’ll do it.’ You just about
can’t stump us, as long as it’s an older crowd out there. People
enjoy the heck out of it.’’
The Post 99 flyer advertising Two of Hearts states that you can
expect to hear “country, blues, oldies & rock ‘n roll hits’’ when they
play. And to that you can add big band and Latin riffs.
“We have such a varied play list that the audience is not going
to get bored,’’ Frank said. “And I don’t like just playing one kind
of music anyway. We try to read the audience. Lately, we’ve
takaen a little side turn by getting into ball room and Latin stuff.
I spend days on the computer making arrangements and learning
that stuff. My wife says I must be married to the computer, but
she gets into learning the parts, too.’’
Frank added that when he plays pedal steel with Southern Star,
he expects to play mainly old-time country. With Two of Hearts,
he and Vicky don’t play “mainly’’ any style of music.
“I call them death derge songs,’’ he said. “We play a few of them.
But if we played too many, we would lose the audience. Those old
country songs are mostly based on cheating, lying, drinking or
dying.’’

Ryan Miller author talk
Aug. 4 at Foley Library
The Foley Public Library will
host an author talk by Ryan
Miller, author of Echoes in the
Rain, on Wednesday, August 4 at
2 p.m. in the library's upstairs
meeting room.
Mr. Miller's story is about love
and commitment which is derailed by the action of others. It
is a factual story of the true life
romance of Ryan and Leah
Miller. It took 3 1/2 decades for
their love to come full circle and
it proves that true love, if held in
reverence, once found will never
die.
Locally, this work is available at
The Book Exchange in Foley. It
is also available online via Amazon Books and CreateSpace. For
more information, please call the
library at 251-943-7665 or go to

Frank Brown Songwriters
Festival veterans Sonny
Throckmorton (pictured) and
Rock Killough will make a
special joint appearance at
Joe Gilchrist’s New Malibu
Lounge in Pensacola on Aug. 7
from 3-7 p.m. Banana Republic will follow at 7 p.m.
Throckmorton has had over
1,000 of his songs recorded by
such artists as Tanya Tucker,
Dave & Sugar, Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, the
Oak Ridge Boys, Doug Stone
and even comedian George
Burns.
After college, Throckmorton
moved from Texas to San
Francisco and played rock &
roll in area
clubs. At the
urging of guitarist and publisher Pete
Drake, he
switched to
country music
and moved to
Nashville in 1964, working as
a bass player for Carl and
Pearl Butler for two years. In
1965, Bobby Lewis had a Top
Five hit with Throckmorton's
"How Long Has It Been."
In 1975, Throckmorton
moved to Texas because he
had promised himself that he
would quit music if he didn't
succeed by age 35. His fellow
songwriters continued trying
to sell Throckmorton's songs,
however, and six months later
he returned and was rehired
by Tree. In nine months, over
150 of his songs were
recorded.
Between 1976 and 1980, a
Throckmorton song appeared
on the charts almost every
week. His 1978 hit for Jerry
Lee Lewis, "Middle Age
Crazy," even became the basis
of a major movie, and he was
named Songwriter of the Year
by the Nashville Songwriters
Association three years in a
row starting between 1978
and 1980.
A member of the Nashville
Songwriters Hall of Fame,
Throckmorton retired to his
Texas farm to be with his family and is making this special
appearance while here visiting friends, including Malibu
owner Gilchrist. The Malibu is
located at 1000 Gulf Beach
Hwy. (850-456-0999).

Newbury, Carole King, Waylon, Jeannie

Willie and Whitey Shafer.
Meadows’ tunes have been recorded by Dierks Bentley, Eric
Church, Jake Owen, Blackberry Smoke, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank
Williams Jr., Wynonna Judd and Randy Houser.
Between the death of his brother, divorce of his parents and a
battle with cancer, the Jackson, Mississippi native was exposed
to nothing but pain before he even learned to shave.
Raised by his grandparents and the nightlife of the local blues
bars, Meadows abused drugs and alcohol for most of his adult life.
Even after he became a touring preacher, his addictions steered
the wheel all the way to Nashville, Tennessee where he attended
rehabilitation multiple times before gaining traction in country
music. “I’m a riser, I’m a get up off the ground, don’t run and
hider,” he sings.
Norsworthy’s (pictured above left) lyrical vulnerability, magnetic
personality and vocally stellar live performances provide songs
that are clean, real and connect. He’s been featured on CMT,
American Songwriter Magazine and is founder of the Roots Foundation, a philanthropic group that focuses on promoting music
education in schools.

WHAT’S HAPPENING
HealthSouth co-founder tells Foley MOAA chapter his story of fraud and deceit
Aaron Beam, the co-founder and former Chief
Financial Officer of HealthSouth, spoke to over
60 Military Officers Association of America Baldwin County Chapter members at the group’s July
luncheon meeting at the Gift Horse Restaurant
in Foley. Beam made headlines by admitting
that he cooked the books at HealthSouth, the
Birmingham, Alabama-based provider of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services.
“By 1994 or ’95 we were a Fortune 500 company
and the largest company in Alabama. We had
40,000 employees in all 50 states,” said Beam. “
But as we matured, it got more and more difficult to make our numbers. You can’t
keep growing at 20% to 30% every
year on the bottom line. To keep the
Street from lowering its estimates,
we started lowering our reserves for
bad debts. When we did acquisitions
we changed the companies’ value estimates so we could apply those estimates to our earnings as we went
forward.
“We committed fraud in the summer
of ’96, when we could no longer
change estimates to make earnings.
We thought we could make a lot of
entries small enough that the auditors wouldn’t detect them. So one
night, during the second quarter of ’96, I said,
‘OK, let’s do it,’ and we credited revenue that did
not exist and we debited assets that did not
exist.”
Nine months after cooking the books, Beam left
the company, but the fraud continued.
In 2003, after the Securities and Exchange
Commission accused HealthSouth of falsely inflating earnings. Beam came forward. He pleaded
guilty to bank fraud and gave evidence against
his former boss, Richard Scrushy.
“You couldn’t tell Scrushy ‘no’ on anything. I
have seen him so mad over minor things that I
actually feared for my physical safety. I often joke
with people, that if Richard Scrushy and Hannibal Lecter were in a fight, I would bet on Richard
Scrushy,” said Beam.
“I felt rotten. It was terrible. My hope was that
after we had done it once, we wouldn’t have to do
it again. But after doing it for four quarters, I felt
like it wasn’t going to end, so that’s when I left.
We had dug ourselves into a hole.”
Beam spent three months in a federal prison
and will be known as a felon for the rest of his
life.
“The correct thing that I should have done at
the critical point when we weren’t going to make
our numbers was to say no to any
illegal actions. If I got fired, I got
fired. Once you actually commit
fraud and have blood on your
hands, getting out of the trap is
very difficult,” said Beam.
The four men who succeeded
Beam as finance chief also confessed to the $2.7 billion accounting
fraud, which took place between
1996 and 2002.
All five CFOs pleaded guilty to
criminal charges and testified that
HealthSouth co-founder and CEO
Scrushy was behind the fraud. But
the defense hammered away at
their credibility during Scrushy’s 2005 trial, and
Scrushy was acquitted of all charges.
Since 2009, Bean has spoken to over 275 groups
about corporate fraud and is the author of two
books, "HealthSouth: The Wagon to Disaster" and
"Ethics Playbook" (co-written with Birmingham
writer Greg Womble), in which he shares his personal and professional insights on avoiding what
he calls "ethical landmines."
He said, “I’m trying to turn a big negative into
a positive, because there is such a need for ethics
in the business world today, and I’m in a unique
position to talk about it.” Pictured: MOAA President Jerry Davis and Aaron Beam.

From luaus to backing up Wayne Perdew & Shine Powell to poolside at the Holiday Inn, J R Owen has been part of Island’s music scene
By Fran Thompson
They might not know that the J R in
his name is an acronym for Jelly Roll,
but Pleasure Island’s longtimers might
remember J R Owen as a member of the
original Wayne Perdew All-Star Band
that packed them in at Shirley &
Wayne’s Supper Club, a gig that first
brought J R over to Pleasure Island from
Mobile in 1986. J R also immediately
picked up a gig playing behind Shine
Powell at The Pink Pony on Sunday afternoons upon entering Island time.
“It was kind of a weird thing that right
away I was able to plug into the island’s
two musical entities, other than Brent
Burns,’’ Owen said. “I stumbled into the
two main scenes in Gulf Shores music.’’
A Michigan native, J R came by his love
for music naturally. His mother was a pianist at his church in the small town of
Williamston (outside East Lansing). He
always sang, but he was well into high
school when he picked up a guitar for
the first time.
Already playing music full-time for six
years, J R said his life changed immediately (“sparks flew”) when he met his
wife, Dottie, while playing a hotel gig in
Greenville back in 1981. The two moved
to Mobile to be closer to Dottie’s parents
in Evergreen, and the couple moved to
South Baldwin soon thereafter.
John Brust, a keyboard extraordinaire
who still plays in the lobby lounge at
Perdido Beach Resort, replaced J R on
bass with the Wayne Perdew All-Star
Band in 1987, when J R left to back up
Powell at his new club behind the original Souvenir City in Gulf Shores.
That gig was short lived. But J R continued to find work. Backed by a trio of
dancers, he packed the place playing
twice weekly luaus at Gulf State Park
Resort. (Billy Pelletier took over that gig
when he left.)
“I enjoyed playing the Hawaiian music,’’
he said. “We had big fun doing that show.
It was easy to get people to put on grass
skirts and get up and dance.’’
J R also played for 14 consecutive summers poolside at the old Gulf Shores Holiday Inn from 1990 til 2003, the year he
started playing with Cool Rayz.
“I guess you can look at the bad or the
good in anything in life, but I realize
that to be able to play music for a living
for all these years is a groovy thing,’’ he
said.
J R still plays solo gigs as well as in an
acoustic version of Cool Rayz, J.E.R.I. In
addition, he plays a number of ballroom
dance clubs between Pensacola,
Fairhope, Robertsdale, Spanish Fort and
Mobile.
“I didn’t really want to do it at first. But
these people dance to every song. And
it’s fun to play chachas, tangos, waltzes
and Rat Pack music,’’ he said. “I get to
play A Girl From Ipanema. And it adds
another slice to what I do. There’s one
guy in Pensacola who is 101, and he
comes to every dance I play there. He
dances and is sharp witted. They all love
to dance and have a good time.’’
J R said the most lucrative gigs in his
eclectic career are the convention and
corporate meetings that he’s been
booked to play at up and down the
beach.
He has played for the Alabama Pest
Control Assn. at Perdido Beach Resort
for 27 consecutive years and is now entertaining a second generation of exterminators. “One guy come up to me with
his four or five year old and said he was
the same age as his kid when he first
heard me play,’’ he said.
J R also played in a duo at Papa Roccos
with Powell and alternated weekends at
that bistro with Burns, his longtime
friend.
He and Dottie, who still keeps her real
estate license active, ran a booking
agency and also booked the music and
ran the stages during the Shrimp Fest
for many years. Dottie was also the general manager at the short lived but
much loved Best Little Warehouse in
L.A. nightclub on Hwy. 59 in the early
1990’s.
Just over a month from turning 65, J R
said he has not thought about retiring.
“I enjoy all the different things I do,’’ he
said. “I like playing in the little acoustic
band. I like getting funky with Cool
Rayz. I get to croon a little bit at the
ballroom dances.
“Sometimes I think it’s not as fun as it
used to be, but really it is,’’ he added.
“It’s not always perfect. But it’s been
wonderful to be able to make a living at
it. So, I guess I’ll play ‘til they pull my
cold dead fingers from the guitar strings.
As long as I can play and sing and make
a little money, I’ll be playing. Or more to
the point, I’ll keep playing as long as
people still want to hear me.’’

19 Questions With J R Owen
1. What is one thing that most people do
not know about you?
I wish I had worked on being a stand-up
comic. I love those people
2. Considering anyone dead or alive, with
whom would you like to have a conversation?
I think I would like to a conversation
with Cleopatra. What a different culture
and slant she would have on life.
3. Other than parents, who is one person
that has greatly influenced your life?
So many people but the writer, Alan
Watts, help me have an epiphany.
4. What is one thing that you would like to
change about yourself?
I am pretty lazy so I would like to have a
tad more drive.
5. What is one thing you would not want to
change about yourself?
Despite all indications to the contrary I
believe things will work out the way they
should. I don't want to change that.
6. How do you cope with stress?
Take a deep breath and realize that
things will work out the way they should.
7. What is your favorite childhood memory?
I had a great childhood. Grew up on a
small dairy farm. After chores my brother
and I played sports and I loved that.
8. What are your biggest pet peeves?
Sometimes folks seem to create drama
when there's no real reason.
9. Who are your favorite entertainers?
I love stand up comedy (Daniel Tosh, Ron
White). But I also love great music (too
many to name).
10. What was your first and your worst
job?
I grew up on a farm so I worked as soon
as I was able. I did work on the railroad as
a track repair man. I don't like cold
weather so working outside in December
and January was not good for me.
11. If you had the political pull, what is one
issue you would address?
Health care insurance and costs. I think
the USA should have medicare for everyone and I think that the system should
have the ability to negotiate with drug
makers for reasonable prices.
12. What is the dumbest thing you ever
did?
Well I worked at the post office when I
was young and could be retired very comfortably from that. Instead I played music
for a living. Wouldn't change it, but it could
be considered 'dumb'.
13. If you won the lottery, what is the first
thing you’d do with the dough?
Pay off bills. Invest carefully. Take care of
family. Travel. Sorry you the 'first' thing.
I'd buy Dottie a new car.
14. What is your greatest fear?
I guess a stroke where I was aware but
couldn't express my feelings or move.
15. What is your greatest extravagance?
I buy musical instruments that I don't really need.
16. Which talent would you most like to
have?
I like to have the ability to know when to
shut up.
17. What is your motto?
Everything is going according to God's
plan.
18. What is your most treasured possession?
Not really a possession but my wife, Dottie, has been the best thing that's ever happened to me.
19. A perfect day is ...
Leisurely having coffee and breakfast.
Maybe a short trip to the gym. A short
drive on some road I've not been on before.
Perhaps a round of golf. Hear some live
music while eating a nice dinner. Relaxing.

Oil spill memories fade at Dauphin Island Fishing Rodeo
By David Rainer
Al. Dept. of Natural Resources
Dr. Bob Shipp stood in amazement last weekend at the 83rd
annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo (ADSFR) as he watched
the frenetic activity on Dauphin
Island.
Shipp, Professor Emeritus at the
University of South Alabama’s
Marine Sciences Department,
never would have imagined the
resilience of the Alabama Gulf
Coast, its ecosystem and related
recreational activities when he
was sitting at Dauphin Island Sea
Lab six years ago.
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill
had cast an ominous pall over all
life on the Gulf Coast in April
2010, and Shipp thought coastal
living had been forever altered.
For obvious reasons, ADSFR officials had to cancel the 2010 rodeo.
“When it happened, I thought
our way of life was gone,” said
Shipp, longtime judge for the
ADSFR, which attracts more than
3,000 anglers annually to the Alabama coast.
“I really never expected it to rebound like it has. The first year,
when things didn’t look too very
bad, I was still really suspicious.
But as time goes on, there appears to be no impact at all. And
the rodeo is a good example. We’re
getting the same kind of fish as
before, maybe even better than
before. Certainly red snapper are
bigger and there are more than
there’s ever been before.
“From a fisheries standpoint,
you’d never notice there has been
any impact at all. That’s not to
say there’s not stuff going on in
the sediments in deep water, but
as far as the fisheries are concerned, you’d never know we had
an oil spill.”
Although the red snapper season
in federal waters is closed,
Alabama state
waters out to 9
miles are open
through July 31
for red snapper.
And the rodeo
showed how big
red snapper can
grow this close
to shore. The
winning red
snapper, caught
by David Silcox,
weighed 29.05
pounds, followed
by Matthew O’Brien at 27.63 and
Ryan Kennedy at 26.51.
Shipp continues USA’s Marine
Sciences research work on the red
snapper population off the Alabama coast. In fact, he and his
crew made a trip into the Gulf on
Wednesday before the rodeo
started. Some of the spots
checked were not regular sites
but had been discovered during
by the charter captains while
traveling from site to site.
“What we’ve done for the last
two years is go to some of these
(discovered) spots,” Shipp said.
“We don’t know who put what
down and don’t know what kind
of material it is. We go to the
spots and put the camera (via remotely operated vehicle) down
and fish them for 15 minutes.
Every one of them is totally
loaded with red
snapper. The
people I bring
along on the trip
don’t believe me
that it’s not a
honey hole.
What you see on
the camera is
validated by
what we catch
on hook and
line.”
Last week’s research trip consisted of fishing
five different
spots for 15 minutes at a time.
Every red snapper that hit the
deck on the boat was either kept
for post-mortem research or
tagged and released. Shipp said
about 250 snapper were caught in
about an hour and 15 minutes of
fishing.
There was one disturbing aspect
of last week’s research trip. Shipp
said the ROV camera picked up
not only plenty of red snapper but
also far too many of the invasive
lionfish.
“One of the spots with chicken
coops probably had 40 to 50 lionfish on it,” he said. “I think lionfish are a serious, serious threat. I
think it’s more of a threat than
overfishing. They feed on young,
live fish, fish that are an inch or
inch-and-a-half long, which
means they are competing with
other species for food. Plus they’re
wreaking havoc on juvenile fish.
“The one fortuitous thing about
red snapper is that juvenile red
snapper are not on the reef. They
are on rubble or rough bottom. By
the time the snapper recruit to
the reef, they are too big for the lionfish to eat. But they’re still
competing for food. With so many
red snapper out there, I don’t
know why they all don’t starve to
death.”
Fortunately, Shipp said examinations of the stomach contents of
red snapper indicate they can forage on species like eels and invertebrates that live in the
substrate.
“Believe it or not, red snapper
can also filter feed,” he said. “Not
a whole lot, but it gives them
something. But I don’t know
what’s going to happen down the
“I think lionfish

a threat than

line with lionfish.”
From an economic standpoint,
Jeff Collier, Dauphin Island
Mayor for the past 18 years, said
the rodeo, which started in 1929,
is part of the fabric of this coastal
community.
“The rodeo is one of the biggest
events we have on the island,”
Collier said. “We’ve found more
ways to leverage and partner
with the Mobile Jaycees (rodeo
sponsors) than we ever have in
the past. It’s a very positive impact on our island community.
“Most of the people down here
have forgotten about the oil spill.
What’s remarkable about our
community is that we have recovered to the extent we have. If you
roll the clock back six years, we
had no idea what we would be
doing in the next one year, five
years, 10 years or whatever. Here
we are six years later and our
economy has rebounded to better
than pre-oil spill conditions. I
think it’s nothing short of a miracle.”
Collier said as bad as the oil
spill was, it has provided an opportunity to learn valuable lessons about unexpected
catastrophes.
“We know hurricanes and what
we have to do in the aftermath,”
he said. “The oil spill was a totally
different situation. Fortunately,
we made lemonade out of the oil
spill. We’ve been able to come up
with new events and rebranding
Dauphin Island. We’re now calling the island the ‘Sunset Capital
of the World.’
“So as bad as it was, some of the
things that came from the oil spill
turned out to be positive. We
came out of it a much better community. I’m very proud to have
been a part of that recovery
process.”
However, Collier is aware there
may be consequences from the oil
in the future.
“The one thing we have hanging
over our heads is the long-term
effect of the oil on the fisheries or
the environment in general,” he
said. “We can easily gauge the
economic recovery, but we have to
rely on the scientific community
to help us determine the impacts,
short and long term, to the environment.”
Chris Blankenship, Director of
the Alabama Marine Resources
Division (MRD), said he and the
MRD staff will remain vigilant in
the monitoring of the marine environment in the aftermath of the
oil spill, but he hopes saltwater
anglers will take advantage of the
great fishing opportunities available right now.
“The fishing in Alabama is really
outstanding overall,” Blankenship
said. “The spotted seatrout, red
snapper and triggerfish fisheries
have been off the chart this year.
We are also seeing a lot of big yellowfin tuna and some of the
biggest ground mullet I have ever
seen.
“There are still several fisheries
that Marine Resources is concerned about, including blue crabs
and flounder. Those fisheries’
landings are still below average.
We are continuing to monitor all
the fisheries for lingering effects
from the oil spill or other factors.
But, we are building inshore and
offshore reefs like crazy with
money from the oil spill, and that
should pay great dividends in the
future.”
