Year 10
Recently we have been very busy with a range of activities to officially mark the last days of high school
for our year 10 students. Year 10 Certificate information has been checked and year 10 reports were
issued this week. On Tuesday 8 December, the year 10 Formal will be held at the National Arboretum.
We are all looking forward to a great event and to seeing our year 10 students arrive in their formal
wear. Many thanks to teachers, particularly our year team of Ross Macdonald, Claire Hirschfeld and
Michael Denmead for all their hard work throughout the year and in organising the formal. As I write I
am very much looking forward to the year 10 final assembly. Finally, I would like to thank all the
students for the contribution they have made to the school and all those parents who have worked so
closely and positively with the school to make the last four years such a success. I hope to see you all at
the final celebration – the Year 10 Graduation Ceremony (Monday, 14 December – arrivals at 1.15pm
and commencing at 1.30pm).
Year 10 Excellence Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the High School Years
I had the pleasure of attending this award ceremony on Monday this week and saw three of our
outstanding year 10 students honoured for their contributions to public education – Clare Yung, Charlie
Barnes and Tilda Barrie. We have included a photograph of them on the day and a copy of their citations
in this newsletter. It is very important that we honour these students who have achieved highly across a
range of areas. Lyneham High School also featured in another way at the ceremony - Tina Nguyen (now
in year 11 at Dickson College) was one of the MCs for the event. I feel very proud to be the principal of
the school that helps to produce such outstanding young people.
Thank you
As this is the last newsletter for this year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the fantastic
staff at Lyneham High School, in particular, Robin Morrell, Barbara Monsma, Kathryn Cheshire and the
rest of the executive team. All of our staff, teachers, teachers’ assistants and administrative staff, make
this school a great place for our students –offering them an outstanding education and so many exciting
opportunities.
Special thanks to the members of the Board, the P&C and our community generally. Many thanks to
Damien McGrath who has been our Board Chair in 2015 and is always so supportive of this school and of
public education. Thanks also to James Cameron and Cindy Trewin who have been very active and
committed as P&C President and P&C Secretary this year. I hope to see many parents in attendance at
our Presentation and Graduation Nights. This is a wonderful way to celebrate the successes of our
school.
I would like especially to say farewell to those parents who, at the end of this term, are leaving our
school community. I know there are many parents who have had a long association with our school and
I hope that you will remember Lyneham High School and its community fondly and that you will
continue to support public education.
I look forward to 2016 and I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a wonderful holiday break. If you
are travelling, please travel safely.
Regards

Year 10 Excellence Awards 2015
On 30 November 2015 three of our year 10 students were presented with excellence awards by the
Minister for Education and Training, Joy Burch MLA, at a ceremony at The Playhouse.
These awards recognise these students for their contribution in their school and wider community.
The recipients for 2015 were; Claire Yung, Charlie Barnes and Tilda Barrie. Citations for these students
are below.
Claire Yung
Claire has demonstrated excellence in academic achievement across all curriculum areas. She has
been awarded dux for the last two years, also winning many major school awards for outstanding
academic achievement. Claire has participated and excelled in enrichment opportunities and she was
selected as a finalist in the 2015 BHP Billiton Science and Engineering Awards. Claire has been
accepted into the extension program Curious Minds.
Charlie Barnes
Charlie is confident and creative, and demonstrates excellence in setting personal goals. He has been
an active member of the student forum and is a representative on the school board. Charlie is a
positive role model for his peers and has enhanced the creative atmosphere at the school through his
involvement in school bands, ensembles and musical productions.
Tilda Barrie
Tilda has contributed to the life of the school and broader community, and is actively involved with
many school clubs and groups. Tilda works for the common good and she is a valued member of the
student forum. Tilda is a positive and proactive role model and she has been an exemplary leader in
the STAR girls program, as well as the student-led mental health awareness program.

Indonesian Program Updates
It has been a busy semester for the Indonesian program with the annual mock wedding and the
performance from the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program. Every year, the year 8 students
host the annual mock wedding, a major highlight in the Indonesian curriculum. The year 8
Sumatrons have been hard at work, organising the meticulous aspects of the ceremony including
the silat performance by Nazeef Raihan, Lachlan Willacy and Darryl Tan. By unanimous votes, Henry
Ganter and Elektra Viduka played the happy couple. This colourful performance was also
competently compered by Lachie McLellan and Lochlainn Byrne in Indonesian and English
respectively. For entertainment, the year 10 Kentang class wowed the crowd with their versatile
and melodious vocals by singing two Indonesian songs, Sempurna and Terukir Di Bintang. They also
actively invited the brave audience to come up and dance along to their exciting performance of Di
Sini Senang. This mock wedding is not just a cultural performance. More importantly, it provides
the perfect opportunity for collaboration between all Indonesian classes. The Year 8 Sumatrons
look forward to passing these traditions to next year’s Indonesian students.
Early this term, Lyneham High School had the privilege of hosting a student teacher from the
Australia Indonesia Youth Exchange Program. Eighteen delegates from across the Indonesian
archipelago were given work placements around Canberra and we were truly lucky to have Pak
Barep, a talented young teacher to teach Indonesian for the first 3 weeks. It has been such an
insightful learning experience for students as they conversed proficiently in the language during the
nongkrong sessions (Socratic circles) or learning about directions in preparation for The Amazing
Race Challenge. At the end of Pak Barep’s placement, students were treated to a dazzling dance
performance by the rest of the AIYEP delegates. Lyneham High School wish Pak Barep and the rest
of the AIYEP delegation all the best in their future endeavours as they head off to Ulladulla to
continue the next component of their Australian travels.
Ibu Idris, Ibu Battaglini, Year 8 Sumatrons and Year 9 Garuda Rangers would also like to
congratulate the year 10 Kentangs on their upcoming graduation. Semoga sukses selalu!

Wodenstock
On Thursday, 26 November, three bands from the year nine performance music classes went to Woden
to compete in an annual music competition called Wodenstock. Wodenstock is a great opportunity for
disabled students who attend The Woden School to experience live music. The school was having a fete
that day so the Woden School students milled around between the performing bands and various
activities such as getting temporary tattoos, karaoke, bubble blowing and dressing up. This created a
very casual atmosphere which made performing all the more fun and light-hearted.
The first band to perform was The Purple Jammers. They played two songs: “Pumped Up Kicks” by
Foster the People, and a mashup of “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes and “Everybody” by The
Backstreet Boys. After some other artists had played, our group, We’ll Change It Later performed.
Together we performed “The Nosebleed Section” by Hilltop Hoods, and “Brother” by Matt Corby.
Straight afterwards came The Swedish Hotdogs. They played three songs: “Youth” by Daughter,
“Blackbird” by The Beatles, and “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon.
All three bands played incredibly well and had great fun performing and listening to other musicians at
the festival. At the end of the day, the results were announced and We’ll Change It Later won “The Best
Band” category!! We earned a prize of $500, which we were very happy and proud about. Additionally,
The Swedish Hotdogs got a special mention due to their excellent performance. Overall, it was a great
day out, performing to an excellent crowd.
Thanks heaps to Mr Mahon for letting us know about the competition and to Ben Pegram for giving us
the opportunity to perform. Congratulations again to everyone who was involved, it was a huge success.
We are looking forward to next year’s festival!

Varey strives for Success
In week 6 of term 4, Kelly-Ann Varey (an Australian marathon runner) visited the STAR program and
shared her inspirational athletic journey. Kelly currently holds the Australian women’s marathon and
50km road running champion title. She began running to create a healthier lifestyle, starting simply
with running from one light pole to the next and increasing the distance every day. She has worked
and trained incredibly hard by continuously pushing herself to achieve personal goals. She is currently
focusing on representing Australia in the World 50km Championships in Doha. Additionally, she is
working towards a chance to compete in the 2016 Olympics.
Kelly showed us some of her trophies that she was awarded as a result of her determination,
resilience, persistence and family support. These achievements include the winner of the Australian
leg of Wings for Life in Melbourne, winner of the Australian 50km Road Championships in Canberra
and being the first Australian to cross the finish line in the Sydney Marathon.
The entire STAR program was highly motivated by her journey and we were all inspired to set goals
and work hard to reach them. We wish Kelly all the best for the future and would like to thank her for
taking the time to talk to us.

Garema Place Competition
Lyneham High School recently entered four groups in the Redesign Garema Place competition held by
the ACT Government. The final presentation was held on Sunday 29 November at Garema Place by the
Chief Minister. I am so proud to advise that out of two focus areas; Building and Design, our students
received a total of four awards out of a possible six. Our students walked away with over $2,000 in
prize money! Below is some information about the competition from the Australian Institute of
Architects website.
GAREMA PLACE - The Competition Brief
“First we shape the cities – then they shape us”
Jan Gehl - world renowned urban designer and architect
Cities provide the forum for where we work, meet, shop, live, share ideas, trade and relax. Its public
spaces provide the settings that support these activities. Garema Place, as part of City Walk in the
Canberra City Centre, has historically been central to the public life of the city, but in recent times,
much of the active life of the city has shifted elsewhere.
Despite brief moments hosting public events and festivals, throughout much of the year, Garema
Place lacks activity.
The competition brief invites proposed ideas of activation in 2 key categories:
1.
As built form or installation(s) – proposals of pavilion or stage, for seating, for exercise, for
play, for relaxation.
2.
As an activity, festival or program of events – as singular or linked activities that considers
connectivity to other public spaces in the city or elsewhere
WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Congratulations to all those that entered the competition. The high standard of entries and
ideas that were generated impressed the jury and emphasised the importance of young designers as
both the current and future users of our built environment, and the critical role they have in how our
built environment is shaped.
And the winners are:
In the Category for the Best Built Form which focused on the design of a built element
1st Prize - The Greenhouse, with Lachlan Kendall and Adiari Ezekiel-Hart from UC Senior Secondary
College, Lake Ginninderra
Greenhouse as a bold proposition is a starting point for us to consider how we can enhance and
develop the existing public realm. It is inviting because it considers Canberra’s seasonal changes, by
offering warm respite from cold winters. It also cleverly suggests how surrounding cafes and
restaurants can grow fresh produce to support their livelihood and linkages to Garema Place
2nd prize - Meet @ G, with Hansheng Li, Charmaine Kwok, Georgia Glenn, Miaozi Weng and You Jung
Ji from Lyneham High School
Meet@G is a central terminal for Canberra’s light rail, linking the city to other stations in Canberra. It
includes a secondary level glazed podium which allows pedestrians to interact, to meet and to rest
through a filtered and multicultural layer of shared greetings.
Care Quality Creativity
9
3rd Prize - Garema Cubed, with Maxwell Ashurst, Lisa Wu, Claire Yung, Michael Connolly and Lucinda
Antcliff from Lyneham High School
Garema Cubed features a collection of mobile cubed elements that can be moved around for seating,
shelter, pop-up stages and play. It is innovative and interactive allowing visitors to Garema Place to
take ownership of the space by choosing the composition to suit a variety of functions, which allows the
space to continually evolve.
In the Category for the best proposal of an event or activity that responded to the physical
conditions of Garema Place
1st Prize for Best Activity/Event design - Maxwell Ashurst, Lisa Wu, Claire Yung, Michael Connolly
and Lucinda Antcliff from Lyneham High School
The Novel Event recognises the independent origins of traders in Garema Place, often quirky by
nature but highly specific to its place. Through a festival of shared storytelling, it will build upon the
many layers of our diverse community, bringing us together through the multiple stories that shape
our city. It is reminiscent yet still relevant to what is so special about Garema Place.
2nd prize - Narragunnawali meaning “coming together”, with Peter Gedeon, Kiran Phillips, Elise
Palethorpe and Georgina Lyall from Lyneham High School
Narragunnawali is an original take on a universal concept - as a Festival of Light – calling upon local
artists, musicians and traders to come together to celebrate inclusion. It incorporates locally
produced cuisine, artists and performers together with charities to consider our shared
commonalities
3rd prize - Switch On, with Eleanor Foster, George Kelleher, Elise Kelleher, Mailani Dalale and Phillipa Hall,
from Telopea Park School.
Switch On is focused on developing a share economy –where traders share a space so there are multiple
functions for single shops. Daytime traders like florists and cafes share their spaces with night time music
venues and bars - keeping Garema Place alive around the clock to effectively and efficiently share space and
resources.

Student Voice
Year 10 Health & PE 2015
This year the Health and Physical Education (HPE) Faculty has incorporated Student Voice, one of our
school priorities, into the PE curriculum. Mid way through the year members of the HPE staff surveyed
students to gather data on the types of activities students would like to focus on. This allowed staff to
individualise various facets of the curriculum to best suit student’s needs and interests. The Student
Voice Unit consisted of a large number of leisure sports and community activities that were elected by
the students for the duration of a four week unit.
Continuing on from this, in term 4 the year 10 students have been participating in a four week unit
called Sport Education. This unit is designed to enhance and develop student’s leadership and
management skills. Classes were given the freedom to voice their opinion and elect a sports board
where the students selected a variety of sports to participate in. Throughout the unit the sports board
led and managed a sports competition to best suit the needs of the year 10 cohort.
On behalf of the HPE faculty we wish the year 10 students all the best for the upcoming years.

Black Friday Trivia Night
A great evening was had by all at the P&C’s 2015 Trivia Night, held on 13 November. Once again, our
question king Anthony Batten served up a challenging evening for competing tables. A break from
delving into the dark corners of the mind for obscure answers was provided by an enormously popular
paper plane making challenge, a silent auction and simply some time for socialising.
This year’s fundraising achieved a new high with around $5,000 raised from ticket sales, raffles, the
auction and those who chose to ‘buy an answer’ or play their joker.
An evening like this can only come together with the contributions of time and effort by a core team of
parents. Led by Cindy Trewin, Annette Braagaard, Fiona Lynn, Michelle Barron, Ken Dodds and all of
the P&C each contributed their time and skills to make the evening work smoothly. Thank you.
Many thanks also to the school’s front office team who once again took on the job of managing ticket
sales.
And of course, the generous contributions of local businesses, including a number of school families, is
enormously appreciated. A list of contributors of prizes is provided in this newsletter. Please show
your appreciation to those businesses by your patronage – and if you can, thank them, so they know
that their contribution is acknowledged and brings them benefits too.
While all of those attending had an enjoyable night, they have also made a significant contribution to
the P&C and the school. The funds raised will be directed to improving the experience of students at
Lyneham and is therefore a great investment!
Once again, thank you to all involved in the night,
James Cameron
P&C President
Homework Club
During the school-year, there has been 2,070 sign-ins at the Homework Club, organised in the library
on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school. More than 30 students per occasion have chosen to stay
at school and continue to work on their assignments, revise for tests, do LanguagePerfect, prepare for
debating or spend time collaborating with other students for group assignment.
It has been great to see so many students working hard, and we welcome you back next year.
Have a wonderful holiday!

2015 Year 10 Formal Tuesday 8 December
National Arboretum
By the time this newsletter is published the formal will be only a few days away. Thank
you to all families for your cooperation and support with prompt payments and providing
information for this night.
Just a few reminders for all spectators and year 10 Students.
Spectators need to arrive with ample time to park and be ready behind the barricades to
see year 10 arrivals which start at 6.00pm. The formal starts at 7.00pm.
There will be traffic marshals to assist in where to drive and drop off points. For safety
reasons the year 10 students will be staying behind the barricades in the cutting, so we
suggest all family photos be taken prior to arrival at the venue. (Also, there are no outside
public toilets available for onlookers or early arrivals. The toilets in the Village Centre
cannot be accessed past 4.00pm). This night is very exciting for all and we are looking
forward to seeing the students dressed for this occasion.
Parents please be at the Arboretum at 10.45pm
ready to collect your child at 11.00pm.
