John Paul DeJoria, Founder/Developer
High Star Ranch (www.highstarranch.com)
John Paul Mitchell Systems (www.paulmitchell.com)
Patron Spirits Company (www.patronspirits.com)
The rags-to-riches biography of John Paul DeJoria exemplifies the
American dream. He is a first generation American entrepreneur,
philanthropist, government servant, and pillar of the business
community. John Paul DeJoria has struggled against the odds not
only to achieve success, but to share his good fortune and empower
others. He knows firsthand what it is like to be the underdog and strives to help as many as possible
to overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential.
A Navy veteran, John Paul was selling encyclopedias and living out of his car, when he teamed up
with hair stylist Paul Mitchell in 1980 to develop and launch the now famous hair products company
with a meager $700 investment. The Hawaiian inspired Awapuhi shampoo, conditioner and styling
lotion revolutionized and dominated the hair care industry and they soared to success. John Paul
Mitchell Systems currently produces over 100 products which are sold both at home and abroad and
sales amount to nearly $1 billion annually. A commitment to caring for the earth influences every
aspect of the company’s policy and strategy.
John Paul earned his second tier of fortune with the creation of Patron Spirits, which he founded
in 1989 with Martin Crowley. Their appreciation of fine tequila, and the desire to make the best in
the world, led them to purchase a factory and agave fields high in the mountains of Jalisco, Mexico,
which was producing a truly extraordinary spirit. That factory is now a multimillion dollar facility
and guest hacienda where 1,200 employees create the “Simply Perfect” tequila that goes into every
bottle. Patrón Spirits Company now imports and markets a portfolio of the finest spirits in the world,
including its signature Patrón tequila line. The company’s other products include Patrón XO Cafe
(tequila and coffee liqueur), Patrón Citrónge (orange liqueur), Pyrat Rums (fine Caribbean sipping
rums) and Ultimat vodka (ultra-premium Polish vodka) .
A dedicated advocate for making the planet a cleaner, safer and more energy efficient planet for all,
John Paul was named 2009 Goodwill Ambassador by the Inter-governmental Renewable Energy
Organization (IREO) at the United Nations. This highly distinguished and prestigious award
recognizes his ongoing effort to develop clean, sustainable technologies and his vision to preserve
natural resources today and for future generations. According to John Paul, “Corporations can and
should change the world for the better. We have the perspective needed to leave the world a better place
for our having been there.”

The prestigious Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, an organization that honors
selected individuals who have overcome humble beginnings and adversity to achieve success, recently
recognized John Paul for his exemplary journey. Members of the Association, including such notables
as Secretary of State Colin Powell, Former Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, Oprah Winfrey,
Norman Vincent Peale, and J.C. Penney, all mentor young people and sponsor over five million
dollars in Horatio Alger need-based scholarships awarded annually to worthy high school seniors
who have proven their ability to overcome, challenges and adversity.
Loyal to his roots and embracing his past, John Paul continues to support organizations that reflect
the personal challenges that he has faced personally. John Paul was inducted in 2011 to the Boys
& Girls Clubs of America Alumni Hall of Fame. Growing up as a B&G of America member, John
Paul credits the local club in his tough neighborhood, for helping him to stay focused as a youth.
He was recently honored for helping to fund a new location for the original Echo Park Club he
attended. Having once been homeless himself, John Paul is a longtime supporter of Chrysalis, a
nonprofit organization providing resources and support for homeless and low-income individuals to
find and retain employment. John Paul is a frequent guest speaker at the Chrysalis facilities, offering
inspirational advice to those looking for a new path.
Together with his friends, such as Nelson Mandela, Brad Pitt, and Richard Branson, John Paul also
serves as a patron of the organization MINE SEEKER, the UK based non-profit company devoted
to battling the global issue of land mine removal, while assisting victims with prosthetic limbs and
rehabilitation. Recently, he also traveled to sub-Saharan Africa to help feed, nurture and improve the
lives of over 17,000 orphaned children, through Food4Africa.
John Paul tireless energy and appetite to make a difference keeps him involved with many diverse
business ventures, including sponsoring medical research. He is passionate about alternative energy
sources and has invested in solar powered automobiles and industries for many years. He is currently
involved in projects such as funding the world’s first environmentally friendly oil refinery in Tunisia,
and advising government officials about a plan to transform the demilitarized zone in North Korea
into an ecological preserve.
John Paul met Jack and Louise Mahoney at their Japanese restaurant, Teru Sushi, in Studio City
in 1982 and has remained friends with them ever since. He was involved with them in projects in
California and Jack designed and built John Paul’s Malibu home in 1990. They then partnered in the
development of The Caledonian in Park City, where JP owns a penthouse suite. There he met Mark J
Fischer, another condo owner, and became partners with him in the Bonanza Park Project. John Paul
has been coming to Utah for twenty years and sponsors the annual Celebrity Ski Classic at Deer
Valley which benefits his friend Bobby Kennedy Jr’s Water Keeper Alliance, promoting clean healthy
rivers throughout America.
