NGK’s polymer insulators are the result of more than 40 years of research and development. Our ISO 9001 certification
has been achieved due to our vast engineering expertise, stringent quality control processes, advanced manufacturing
capabilities, and our selection of the best materials and optimum designs. All of these are essential in order to meet NGK’s
traditional policy of commitment to producing insulators of the highest quality.

End-fittings

Forged steel or ductile cast iron (hot dip galvanized).
Housing
•
Silicone rubber with excellent hydrophobicity and
anti-tracking performance. The material passes not only
IEC/ANSI tracking erosion test but also other standard
aging tests such as CSA / tracking wheel test.

High quality pultruded epoxy
FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics) rod.
Interfaces
Housing to Core
Excellent chemical bonding stronger than rubber’s inherent
strength. No sheath-to-shed interface and no joint in
housing up to 800 kV class application because of direct
one-piece molding.

Housing to End-Fitting
Water-tight sealing ensured by double O-rings built into
housing structure and silicone sealant with positive contact
by crimping the end-fitting.

Superior gripping of core due to pressure controlled
multiple step circumferential compression which enables
excellent mechanical performance because of less stress
concentration.

Research and Development
High performance and quality of our polymer insulators have been proven by extensive research. At both NGK’s High Voltage
Laboratory and our other testing facilities, we have conducted the standard tests specified in international standards, such as
IEC. Various tests, from chemical analysis of the materials to full-scale electrical and mechanical tests on polymer insulators, also
have been performed. These results indicate the continuous improvement of our polymer insulator technology.

Maximum Design Cantilever Load (MDCL)
The strength rating of line post insulators is usually designated as cantilever strength because of the structural application in
transmission lines. And since the cantilever strength is decided by the bending movement applied to the insulator, the rating
varies as the length of insulator changes in the same core size. MDCL is the mechanical rating of the line post insulators.

All of NLPI’s insulators are packed in weatherproof containers in order to protect the products during land, air, and sea transportation. Several different grades of packaging can be offered depending on the mode of transport and the expected storage conditions. The packaging options that we

of the containers, the manufacturer’s name, and any other customer requests. Also, a “Polymer
Insulator Handling Instruction” sheet is included with all containers. This sheet states any necessary cautions during handling, transportation, and installation. If corona rings are to be included, a
corona ring installation sheet is also provided.
