Sandy Coatney, Athletic Director
It's the end of the year, with baseball, softball and track underway. We wish those
athletes all the best, and hope for their success. Looking back, the girls basketball team
had a great year, as did several of the wrestlers. The boys basketball team, a very
young team, had a growth year. They didn't have a whole lot of wins, but they gained a
lot of skill and experience.
Our annual athletics fundraiser, the Tut Harville Athletics BBQ and raffle, will be at the
Boathouse in Nice on Sunday May 17th from 11:30 to 5:00pm. Tickets are $14.00 for
adults and $7.00 for children. All proceeds go to purchase athletics gear for the high
school teams - this year we were able to buy new football uniforms, basketball uniforms
and track uniforms. Raffle tickets are $5.00 each, and include prizes like baseball
tickets, dinner at Robinson Rancheria or Running Creek, free golf, and many other
donations from local businesses. Please come out and support our athletes!
Turning to next year, it is very important that several things get taken care of before next
fall. First, students need to keep their grades up - students need a minimum of a 2.0
GPA, with 20 credits, to play sports. Athletes need to get a physical every year, and
summer is a great time to get that done. Athletes also need to be to class on time; if an
athlete is tardy three times in one week, that athlete will be ineligible to play sports the
following week.
Finally, a note about health. It is getting warmer, so athletes really need to pay attention
to nutrition and hydration. Drink water! Drink water all the time; it is the best way to
beat heat injuries. Water is much better than sugary sports drinks that have as much
sugar as soda. Try adding a couple ounces of juice/sports drink to a liter or water
instead; that will provide a little flavor without all the sugar.
Lastly, we could use some volunteer help with both boys and girls soccer. Interested?
You will need to get fingerprinted, TB assessed, have a valid driver's license, current
CPR and First Aid certificates, and take a class on concussions and coaching.
-Sandy Coatney

THE IMPORTANCE OF ATTENDING SCHOOL
Much



of a student’s success is determined by the following:
Good attendance
Appropriate nutrition and physical activity
Time management (school work first and TV, cell phone, iPod, YouTube,
Facebook and all other social networking second)
 Seeking help when you don’t understand.
Students should have a 90-100% attendance rate. This is the first step to success. If
they are attending school on a regular basis, we have more contact with them and
have the time to cover the curriculum. If a student misses school, trying to catch up
in seven classes becomes very difficult.
