Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – August 16 and August 17, 2014
Liturgies and Paraliturgies
Including Mass Intentions
Pastor’s Corner
My Dear Friends,
The teachers of St. Mary Catholic
School are back for the 2014-2015
academic year, and the students will
come back on August 21st and 22nd for
half-day sessions. Welcome back to
one and all! I pray that this new
school year is the best ever!
Beginning on August 29th, Friday morning Mass will be at 8:30 a.m. for
the academic year instead of 7:30 a.m.
Someone asked me when we have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at
the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. We have Adoration for one hour every
Thursday morning after the 7:30 a.m. Mass, every first Friday of the month
that goes from after the morning Mass until 12:30 p.m., and every first
Sunday of the month for one hour following the 12:30 p.m. Mass.
We also have Morning Prayer every Monday thru Thursday at 7 a.m.
Morning Prayer is from the Liturgy of the Hours, the official prayer of the
Catholic Church.
Diocese of Raleigh officials have given rave reviews of our parish because
of the hospitality and organization we showed for the Pre-Encuentro
Familiar celebration on August 2nd. 354 participated in this event held in
the Upper Room 1871. There were 234 adults, 102 children, and 18
workers. The Hispanic Youth Group babysat the kids for the whole day.
Parishes represented, beside the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, were: St.
Patrick (Fayetteville); St. Anthony of Padua (Southern Pines); St.
Elizabeth of Hungary (Raeford); St. Mary (Garner); St. Catherine of Siena
(Wake Forest); Immaculate Conception (Clinton); Sacred Heart
(Whiteville); and Our Lady of the Snows (Elizabethtown). Here is a photo
of the event.
Plans for the 2015 Bishop’s Annual Appeal (BAA) are already underway.
This coming year, the bishop will host 6 “BAA Kickoff Dinners.” These
dinners will be held at St. Michael the Archangel in Cary, St. Thomas
More in Chapel Hill, the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary in Wilmington, St.
Ann in Fayetteville, Holy Family in Elizabeth City, and St. Peter in
Greenville. The dinner hosted here will be on January 15, 2015 at 6 p.m.
I’ll keep you posted. All pastors, pastoral administrators, and BAA
chairpersons must attend any one of these dinners. I’ll keep you posted.
Work on our ramp and elevator project continues. Because of the scope of
the project, the parking lot by the gym may be unavailable for a short
period of time. Please be patient, for construction is a messy process, but
the end result will be something very worthwhile.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Bob

“A Stitch….A Prayer….The Touch of God”
Our Prayer Shawl ministry knit and crochet special shawls and blankets that
receive a pastoral blessing. These hand-made items are made available to
anyone experiencing a physical or emotional crisis. Some Prayer Shawl Ministry
members do their knitting and crocheting at regular meetings (10:00am on the
2nd & 4th Tuesdays each month) others prefer to work exclusively from home.
San Francisco de Asís Church, Reitoca
San Francisco de Asís Church
is the main church of our
sister parish and is located in
the town of Reitoca, F.M.,
Honduras. There are 84 other
churches and chapels of our
sister parish that Fr. Gerardo
and Fr. Alex care for. “F.M.”
stands for Francisco Morazán,
the name of the Departamento
in which Reitoca is located.
A departamento is like a state.
If you need more information or know of anyone who needs the warmth and
comfort of a prayer shawl, call Noreen (798-0055). You or the recipient need not
be a member of our congregation.
St. Mary Nursery News
The parish nursery could use some more volunteers. The nursery is

Carolina Catholic interviews the hermit priest of North Carolina
For our two August shows, Carolina Catholic went into the mountains of North
Carolina to interview Father George David Byers, a priest living as a hermit in the
mountains of Transylvania County in the Diocese of Charlotte. With Bishop
Jugis’ permission, Father George lives in the mountains at his Holy Souls Hermitage where he prays for priests, writes, and assists rural parishes on weekends. In our first show, we learned about this priest, his 20 years in Rome, and
his four years as a hermit. In our second show, we will be discussing his thesis
and writings on Genesis 2 & 3 where he discusses his scientific and theological
study of the Bible on the topic of original sin.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sister Isaac
In the Gospel today we can visualize Jesus healing someone who is not
one of the acceptable people in the local community. He admires the
Canaanite woman’s tenacity and faith and calls us to a like
commitment.
Monday through Thursday we open our doors at 8:30 am to people
from all walks of life. The one thing they have in common is their
needs which they hope our community can assist them with. Clothing
and hygiene products are on everyone’s list.
Fifteen or more volunteers show up each day. Two rooms in the
Outreach are dedicated to clothing, shoes and hygiene items. Each day
the donated clothing is gone through, piece by piece and sized and
folded and then placed on hangers or shelves. The volunteers who
work directly with our guests interview the men and women as to their
needs and then gather the clothing requested with great help from the
“sorters”. Generally speaking our folks are reasonable as to their
immediate needs and are aware that we have limited resources. One
often hears the remark, “I’ll just take this, because I know someone
else also needs the same size.” We carry all sizes in our clothing
department, from new-born infants to adults. From time to time you
will read in the bulletin that we could use specific items as our
inventory has run out.
For the past several years we have been blessed to be the recipients of
diapers from the October drive held at Immaculate Conception. This
donation helps us serve Moms and their little ones well into May and
then we use our funds to make some limited purchases to finish out the
year. We distribute layettes that are beautifully prepared by some of
our volunteers and they are so appreciated by expectant Mothers. We
are good at adding “extra touches” that make people feel loved and
very special.
Many of you share clothing that is just perfect for people going on
interviews. We collaborate with Phoenix, a non-profit group that has a
training program to help folks re-enter the work force. When they are
ready to go out and search for jobs, they come to us to get “dressed”.
We even have shoes and purses to match!
The needy boxes in Church provide most of the funds needed to keep
our hygiene closet stocked. Dedicated volunteers purchase deodorant,
combs, shampoo, soap, toothpaste and brushes and T.P. for the
program.
Our volunteers are committed to help their brothers and sisters no
matter where they come from. They do it with respect and care, and it
is noticed by those on the receiving end. We often hear, “Have a
blessed day” and it is blessed because they are a part of it, calling us to
reach out and heal.
Special Need of the Week
We will be closed for the entire month of August and will reopen September 8th. We are not able to receive any donations during this time
and we really need your cooperation with this, as bags and boxes will
block the entrance to the building during construction.
RCIA
Sessions will begin the end of September. If you are interested in joining the group please call John Walsh, during
the month of August, at 762-5491 x114.

As the summer vacation winds down and the school ads
begin to appear, I hope that you've all had an opportunity to have
some rest and relaxation with your families. I welcome all of our
new families and welcome back all of our returning families. The
teachers returned to school last week to prepare for the upcoming
school year.
Our Orientation nights (also listed on the calendar on the
website) are as follows:


PreK and Kindergarten - Monday, August 18th, 5:30-6:30
1st grade through 8th grade - Tuesday, August 19th, 6:30-8
Please meet us in the Basilica. After a short meeting and
introductions, parents and students will move on to the classrooms
to be greeted by the teachers.
During these evenings, the Gently Used Uniform Closet
will be open in the cafeteria for your convenience. We thank the
numerous families who have dropped off their gently used uniforms this summer. As you shop for uniforms, please be mindful
of the guidelines in the Student Handbook online. Boys' shoes, in
particular, seem to cause confusion. Oxfords are not to be replaced
by canvas shoes. Canvas shoes may be worn on gym days if you
are in Grades K-8.
While you've been away, new energy efficient lights were
installed in the gym (Booster Club). A new exhaust system (St.
Mary Parish) was also installed in the gym to help circulate the air.
Construction on the ramp (St. Mary Parish) entrance to Tileston has
begun. Some of the gym parking lot will not be available for
parking throughout August and September. New drains are
being installed and the brick wall is being extended on the 5th Ave.
side of the gym. We are grateful to the families, friends, and parishioners whose donations have made it possible for these improvements to occur.
Our new parent liaison who will be calling new families
soon is Mrs. Jamie Hayden. Two of Mr. and Mrs. Hayden's daughters are St. Mary School graduates. Their youngest daughter, Alexius, is a rising 8th grader this year.
We ask that you continue to pray for Patrick Anderson
(husband of Mrs. Anderson, our first grade teacher). As of today,
slight improvement has been made.
Enjoy the remainder of summer vacation and we look forward to
seeing you all soon.
