About Us
Surmet Corp. was founded in 1982 with a goal to become a commercial
producer and supplier of differentiating products based on advanced
metallic and ceramic materials technologies. Surmet became a leader in
developing and manufacturing critical components such as the
electrostatic clamp, for semiconductor processing equipment. These
Surmet products have been inserted in IC Fabrication production lines
used by all major companies worldwide.
For defense markets, Surmet has developed weight efficient transparent
armor technology based on our proprietary ALON® optical ceramic
material. We have already proven that ALON® transparent armor offers a
lightweight solution to defeat a wide range of threats including
30calAPM2 and 50calAPM2. ALON® transparent armor defeats these
threats at about one-half the weight and thickness of current glass based
transparent armor. Surmet can manufacture and supply ALON®
transparent armor solutions for these ballistic threats. It is also
noteworthy that Surmet is producing the ALON optical ceramic hard face
material in thicknesses up to 1 in., this may enable scaling up our armor
capability to efficiently defeat larger 12.7 mm, 14.5 mm and IED threats.
Surmet is also developing infrared transmitting optical components for
applications such as missile domes, reconnaissance windows, and laser
windows. We are supplying precision optics ceramic components to
major Prime Contractors for insertion in production defense systems.

ALON®
TECHNICAL DATA
ALON® Optical Ceramic
ALON®Optical Ceramic is an extremely durable
crystalline material with excellent optical
transparency in the near ultraviolet, visible and
infrared up to approximately 5 μm wavelength.
ALON® Optical Ceramic is fabricated using a
proprietary powder processing technique. The
material combines mechanical and optical properties
similar to sapphire with the advantages of an
isotropic cubic crystal structure. It has an
approximate composition of Al23O27N5.
ALON® Optical Ceramic can be made to order as
windows, domes, plates, rods and tubes in a wide
range of sizes and thicknesses by a variety of
conventional ceramic forming methods such as
injection molding, isostatic pressing and slipcasting.
