Creativity Challenge
IFF SKETCHES
IFF Sketches is a creative challenge for which perfumery students
from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York,
ISIPCA in Versailles and, and the IFF Perfumery School were
asked to create a “Fragrance Sketch”.
“A rough or unfinished drawing or painting, often
made to assist in making a more finished picture.”
Oxford English dictionary
IFF has launched the Sketches creative challenge to foster
creativity and give talented students the opportunity to showcase
their capabilities on IFF’s 125th anniversary celebration at the
World Perfumery Congress.
The students were challenged to create a fragrance with access
to only 12 pre-determined ingredients with the choice not to
use the full set. They were asked to share what inspired them
in making the Fragrance Sketches.
Student fragrance submissions were evaluated in blind tests
by a team of IFF perfumers, scent design managers and
marketing professionals.

HOW I CREATED MY
FRAGRANCE SKETCH:
After smelling all the ingredients
I imagined myself in the painting by
Claude Monet, ‘The artist’s Garden
at Giverny’. When creating my
Fragrance Sketch I wanted it to be
full of lush and colorful notes. The
lush and green floral notes are to be
smelled first. Taking a step back from
the painting and Sketch one notices
the sweeter more vibrant colors or
notes of melon and citrus. Taking yet
another step back, you can smell the
woodier notes as well as the creamy
amber notes.

Cyclemax™ and Kharismal® Super
provide the initial fresh, green scent.
Combining this with Juniper Berry
Oil and Cassiffix® gave the Sketch a
more aromatic, sweeter impression.
Nectarate™ gives the fruity note that
has a melon effect together with the
green floral notes. Finally one smells
the inviting and calming notes of
Trisamber® and Timbersilk™.

HOW I CREATED MY
FRAGRANCE SKETCH:
I was inspired by strong women
who are their own leaders. Especially
middle eastern women (hence the
spicy note in my Sketch) who still
struggle with disproportionate ranks
in society. I tried to express this with
luminous floral heart notes, rose
petals, topped with a fruity melon
freshness. Followed by a sensual
amber, spicy, woody base.

FRAGRANCE SKETCH:
The main inspiration for this Sketch
was Arsène Lupin, the famous
gentleman burglar invented by writer
Maurice Leblanc. He was an inspiration
for many things like books, movies,
theater shows and even 2 perfumes.
The Sketch was built like a burglary
where Citrolate™ is the subject that
is about to be stolen, the gem with
the sparkling citrus side of grapefruit.
Timbersilk™ is the plan: safe, woody
and very comfortable, dry, and
ambery. Trisamber® is the journey:
sometimes spicy, sometimes creamy,
powerful amber-woody note.

All ingredients are key, giving an
accord with dry cedarwood and
sparkling grapefruit notes. It has
an elegant spicy accent and a delicate
balsamic facet.
The strength and conviction of
this Sketch is defined by the daring
blending of Cinnamalva, Timbersilk™
and Trisamber®.
PERFUMERS’ COMMENTS:
Inspirational pictures
Using a high level of Citrolate™
to capture the sparkling notes of
grapefruit demonstrates a daring
and creative drive. The high level
combination of Citrolate™ with
Trisamber® and Timbersilk™ gives
a unique spiced mustard facet.

HOW I CREATED MY
FRAGRANCE SKETCH:
We were inspired by the palace
of Versailles, especially Marie
Antoinette’s room, we aimed to
mimic the smell in this room with
our Sketch.
KEY INGREDIENTS I USED:
The room smelled of fresh ambery
scents from the bed along with soft
woody notes for which we used
Timbersilk™ and Trisamber®. The soft
breeze coming from the open window
brought in light floral notes from the
garden, along with fruity accents.
For the floral fruity effect we used
Kharismal® Super and Nectarate™.
The sound of the fountain gave the
watery effect and made it feel like
a peaceful day. Cyclemax™ was used
for adding the fresh, watery effect
of the fountain.

My Sketch revolves around the ocean
and the act of surfing. I was inspired
by seeing a video with impressive
aerial views of surfing on the world
famous wave “Pipeline” on Oahu’s
North Shore. When I created my
Sketch I kept looking at a single frame
shot from the surfing video to capture
all the visual elements that I wanted
to include in my Sketch.

NECTARATE™

Cyclemax™ is the protagonist and
plays the key role in delivering a
watery, ozonic Muguet freshness feel
and evokes an effervescent airy mist
of water after a crashing wave. I used
Cassiffix® for its sulfuric part of Cassis,
reminiscent of sea life. Juniper Berry
Oil for its extremely fresh, aromatic
note that brings a shade of green to
the water. Liffarome™ intensifies that
greenness and its juicy pear facet
evokes summer freshness.

This Sketch displays a very good
comfort level for the ingredients and
how they can be used. The crafty way
Kharismal® Super and Cyclemax™ are
used results in a very fresh, watery,
ozonic effect that is well aligned with
the image.

The Water Lilies series of paintings by
Claude Monet came to my mind when
I was smelling the ingredients available
for this project. I liked the idea of using
an impressionist painting as inspiration
for my Sketch as you can only get
a good impression of the piece when
you don’t look or smell too close.
I wanted to express the combination
of the green and blue colors that are
dominant in the painting.

The Sketch is mainly based on the
zesty grapefruit aspect of Citrolate™
with enhanced top note from the
fresh bitterness of Juniper Berry Oil.
Together with the transparency of

aquatic freshness of the paintings.
Trisamber® and Timbersilk™ bring
texture to the Sketch and also
remind of the wooden bridge that
can be seen in some of the Water
Lilies paintings.
