2012 Uhwarrie Society Committee
Celia and I would like to express our gratitude for your
generosity in supporting United Way. Once again, thank
you for answering the call to provide support and
resources to our partners, for those in need. I want to
thank you for your leadership in this endeavor.
In 2012 our Uwharrie initial goal was to increase our
level of support from the prior year. We were successful
by increasing over $4,100.00 and we were within $844 of the $400,000 stated goal.
This would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Uwharrie committee members. We did bring in new members and expand our base. We would
also like to thank the entire United Way staff for their support.
While we measure the dollars raised in the Society as part of the overall goal, the
true impact of the Society is measured by the support and outcomes in the
community. Working with the committee for the past twelve months has been an
honor.

Together, We’re Getting Things Done When Alexis de Tocqueville visited America in the early 1800s to study our
young democracy, he was struck by the “unparalleled spirit of volunteerism and
community” he found here. Immediately, he recognized it as one of the keys to
our democracy’s success and immortalized it in his book, Democracy in America.
Three centuries later, it is that same unparalleled American Spirit that The Alexis
de Tocqueville Society honors today. Established in 1972 by United Way of
America, the Society recognizes the extraordinary generosity of individuals or family foundations nationwide that give $10,000 or more annually to United Way campaigns. It represents the highest level of giving for United Ways across the nation.
The Uwharrie Chapter of The Alexis de Tocqueville Society was chartered in 1998
and currently has eight members. These generous donors join a national registry of philanthropic leaders who are changing the face of their communities through United Way.
