The Voice of Logan Aluminum
JULY 2012
Perdue Named New Plant Manager
Congratulations to Ken Perdue who was
recently selected as the Plant Manager for
Logan Aluminum.
At Logan we value our culture as something
that sets us apart, and rightfully so, but we
have to be cautious at the same time that
we don’t allow that sense of protection to
inhibit our growth and development. We
need a vision that helps define what our
business will look like in five years and the
STEP Plan does that. The elements of the
STEP Plan insure that one segment of the
business is not compromised for the sake of
another, and defines strategies for growth
in all areas of our business.
Most recently, Ken has been the Manager
of the Cold Mill Business Unit. He started
at Logan in June, 1985 as a Mechanical
Engineer Tech. in ESM. He was promoted
to Staff Mechanical Engineer in Finishing,
later transferring to Cold Rolling (CM1/2).
Ken left Logan in December, 1994 to join
Machine Concepts in Minster, Ohio where
he remained until his return to Logan (CM3
Process / Engineering Leader) in January,
2004. In February, 2005 he was promoted
to the Finishing Business Unit Manager then
moved to Cold Mill Manager in January,
2010.
What will our business look like five years
from now? No one knows with certainty,
but I want to do all I can to make sure we
are in a position to meet the demands of our
Associates. We need to be the best at what
we do, but be versatile enough to adapt to
an ever-changing business climate.
Ken is a graduate of Virginia Tech, BS
Mechanical Engineering. Prior to joining
Logan he worked for Armco Steel in
Houston, TX and Ashland, KY.
Randy Schumaker made the following
comment included in Ken’s announcement.
“Please join me in welcoming Ken to
this important role. I look forward to his
leadership as we transition to new levels
of excellence in an ever-changing business
environment.”
When Ken was asked for a few comments
about his new opportunity he was excited to
offer the following thoughts...
“I am honored by this opportunity. I am
fortunate to have had the opportunity to
work and interact with numerous rolling
facilities in my career, and without question,
can say that my teammates at Logan are
the best anywhere. Our teammates are our
strength.
I would like to say with all sincerity that the
safety and well-being of my teammates is
first and foremost to me. Every teammate
must understand the personal accountability
they bring to work every day, and they must
understand the accountability they have to
their team and teammates. Together we
can achieve an injury-free workplace.”
I sincerely believe that the success of
Logan is not from any one person, but is in
the strength of the teams and their ability to
manage the business.

Novelis Recycling Challenge
Tom Walpole, President, Novelis North America, has announced that Novelis
will be holding its Can Recycling Challenge (or what has been know at Logan
as the Novelis Can Contest) in 2012. Each U.S. location competes for the
most aluminum beverage cans collected per employee. The winner will receive
$5,000. Each location also competes for the best internal and external promotion,
a $1,000 prize for each. The awards will be donated to the charity chosen by
the winning site. Additionally, each location’s results will be submitted to the
Great American Can Roundup Industry Challenge, a can collection campaign
organized by the Can Manufacturer’s Institute. If a Novelis location collects the
most cans per employee in the contest, it will win an additional $2,000 from
CMI to donate to a charity of its choice. Logan has decided to divide evenly the
proceeds of the collected cans as well as any awards from the Challenge among
the schools in Logan County and Russellville City school systems.
Logan has chosen September as the month in which we will participate. Please
begin collecting aluminum beverage cans at home, organization (church,
veteran, scouts, etc.), community and sporting events, summer get-togethers,
etc. during the summer. During the month of September bring in the cans you
have collected. Employees will have the opportunity to enter for weekly drawings
for prizes. A grand prize will be given to the employee who collects the most
cans. Tri-Arrows Aluminum has also agreed to match Logan’s contribution
based on cans collected! Let’s make this a great competiton!
Removing Barriers For Safe Behavior
The POWER Process (Protecting Our Workers by Eliminating Risk) is a
behavior based safety process which is intended to increase safe behaviors
and reduce at-risk behaviors at Logan. One of the ways this is accomplished
is by using observation data to identify and remove barriers to safe behavior.
In most units this process begins with the Safety Star Points from each team
reviewing observation data and creating action items to address the identified
barriers. These action items are then assigned to the appropriate resources for
completion.
During an average month over 30 of these activities are completed across the
plant. Some solutions are simple, such as ensuring protective equipment is
readily available, while others are much more complex, for example, redesigning
a piece of equipment. Regardless of the difficulty, none of this would be possible
without the efforts of the POWER observers and barrier removal teams. Thank
you for helping reduce exposure at Logan!

REMELT
Remelt had one LTA, 2 recordable injuries and
8 first aid injuries in 2011. Completed safety
projects including dross house RIE, DC3
charge bucket area RIE and installation of
new snif lid on DC2 removing a cringe factor.
A major barrier removed is the development of
hand tools used to keep hands off objects as
it is being lifted. Another safety improvement
is a new shirt for individuals on the Recycle
receiving team. This shirt provides more
awareness for others to be able to see these
team members.

Note From Stacey Hughes, HR Manager
I wish to thank all of my Logan Aluminum team members and their families for their prayers, gifts, cards, emails, texts and offers of assistance
during my recent sudden illness. Your kindness and thoughtfulness meant so much to me and my family at the most difficult time of our lives.
We never know what may happen to us in our lives, but it is so comforting to know that I had so many of you praying and thinking of me. I felt
that support every day and it lifted me up during my toughest days. My Logan family is such a blessing to my life.
I am happy to be back at work full time seeing all the smiling faces of my teammates. The love and concern has not stopped. A wonderful
support network checks on me daily to see how I am feeling. You make the good days better and encourage me through the bad days that
I still experience. My progress and prognosis is good thanks in part to the exceptional doctors and nurses at Vanderbilt University Liver
Transplant Clinic. Most importantly, I give thanks to my donor angel and his/her family for giving me the gift of life.
In closing, I want to share this poem that has meant so much to me over the last few months. I will always be thankful for each of you.
Be Thankful
By Author Unknown
Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don’t know something,
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations,
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
Because it will build your strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes.
They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you’re tired and weary,
Because it means you’ve made a difference.
It’s easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who
Are also thankful for the setbacks.
Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,
And they can become your blessings.

Community Involvement
One of the many donations to community activities that Logan Aluminum makes is for the “Newspapers In Education” program sponsored
through the Bowling Green Daily News. The program provides grade school students in both Logan County and Russellville City schools
a copy of the “Kids Scoop” section of the Bowling Green newspaper. There are numerous activities and current event stories that the
elementary age students can relate to. Shown here is one of the many “thank-you” cards Logan received from area students who appreciate
being able to receive the newspapers each week.
