You'll love this Mid-Week boost every Wednesday at 7:01 featuring praise, worship, and a message of hope to empower your life! Grace Church hosts a mid-week worship experience called the Oasis. We invite you to come and be filled at the Oasis of God’s love and Grace through praise, worship, and a message of hope that will empower your life. This is all done in a relaxed setting of our sanctuary. You come at 6:30 with a potluck meal to share, break bread with others, and join in worship at 7:01 or you can just come at 7:01 and join us for worship. We desire to be a church that reflects and models the early church as mentioned in Acts 2:42 “They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship and to the breaking of bread and prayer!” Worship on Wednesdays will help us accomplish this and empower your life. Nursery care is provided each Wednesday. Reaching Up - Reaching Out! PAGE #7 Grace Press — April 2016 Outreach– Alex’s Dream Alex, don’t limit yourself and don’t worry about what you are saying. I know you don’t have any expectations I would just like to know some things about you and your children, fun things, and important things, maybe dreams for your life. I wish they had a sensory play room…hmm you would think I would know right off the bat because I’m always wishing for things, but oddly enough that’s all I can think of right now . (Please continue on page 9) PAGE #8 Reaching Up - Reaching Out! Grace Press — April 2016 (Article continued from page 8) If I could spend an afternoon with them what would we be doing? Well considering we spend every afternoon together, I would like if Ryan had a modified trike, and I had a bike, so that all three of us to go riding together. I also wish Ryan had a specialized wheelchair so that he can endure long hours at a zoo or theme park. With his recent surgery, due to his severe scoliosis, he doesn’t seem to be able to withstand long periods of walking. Yes I asked…. If I didn’t have to do….. If I didn’t have to dust/sweep/mop/vacuum/laundry/clean blah blah blah every once in a while, I would have more time and be less tired…geez idk actually if I didn’t have to do everything once in a while really lol If I could afford it, I would love to remodel the house, so that the boys would have their own rooms. Paint or put siding on the house. Maybe renovate the garage to be geez idk oh put insulation throughout the house regardless just remodel the house I guess. Outreach– Adam Car We have been over there several times… Whenever we accept an assignment it takes several visits to determine the needs and how to help the family. It’s important that we as “a church” don’t simply decide what “we” are willing to do, but actually “see” the needs of others and meet them. That is exactly what happened on the third visit. Literally my right hand servant Adam Simington was with me. He had just assembled several items to help Alex (mom) organize stuff and we were delivering them to her. When we left he said, “I took a picture of a flyer I saw on her table. The flyer was for a scouting event that requires a car to be built. I am pretty sure her son Trystan would love to do this but I am sure mom probably can’t. As an eagle scout it would be an honor to build it for him.” And that he did! On his own, this young man Adam saw a need and responded. He had no idea what that car would mean to this little boy and he had no idea what it would mean to mom. Adam had no idea of what was on her list, he didn’t have to. God showed him a way to be a gift and he accepted without reservation. (Please continue on page 10) Reaching Up - Reaching Out! PAGE #9 Grace Press — April 2016 (Article continued from page 9) When I told Alex about what Adam wanted to do, she said “Catherine in all of his life I haven’t wanted someone to reach out to him and help him in ways that focus on him. He is a wonderful unselfish little boy and helps his brother so much. It just means the world to me that there really is someone like Adam who is willing to help him.” On Monday March 14th Adam delivered the car…but he delivered more than that…he delivered hope! Be in prayer, take a risk, and respond without thinking. Trust that when God invites you to join him…HE EQUIPTS YOU TO DO IT! Be like Adam. See…Do! I am so thankful to Adam Simington and so many I get to serve with that have the eyes of Christ and His hands and feet. From the frontlines, Catherine Kid’s Place at Grace March was a busy month here at Kids Place! Our month was started by celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday. We made Cat in the Hat hats and read all kinds of books by Dr. Seuss. We also started Karate on Tuesday mornings and Tippi Toes, which is a dance class, on Thursday mornings. We look forward to continuing these classes throughout the rest of the school year. St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated with lots of green and pizza parties in our classrooms! We learned all about weather at the beginning of the month and learned all about Easter at the end of the month! We celebrated everything we learned with an Easter Egg hunt! We are looking forward to April when we will be learning about our different senses and about Earth Day! Lauren Celander, Director Grace’s Kingdom Kidz Ministry (GKKM), led by Jennifer Bradford, welcomes children ages 5 years through 5th grade to create community friendships and to engage in learning about God in a fun way. GKKM meet twice a month on Sunday right after church for about an hour an a half. Parents are free to go have a nice lunch and return to pick up their child/children at 2:00 PM +/-. GKKM will include a meal. If any adults are willing to volunteer to provide a child friendly meal, it would really be appreciated and you can contact Jennifer at 361-271-7575. PAGE #10 Reaching Up - Reaching Out! Grace Press — April 2016 Grace Youth Buzz Sunday, February 28th the Grace Youth came together to tackle a God-sized project. The group worked all day to help a woman out of a “hole” she found herself in. Because of the dedication of the group we were able to take a space that was nearly unlivable and turn it back into her home. The project not only restored her home, but it also restored her hope. Sunday, March 6th the youth worked at the church to help organize the youth room. We helped fill a dumpster and prepared for this upcoming year’s rummage sale. On Palm Sunday the group helped with the church-wide Easter egg hunt. We painted the children’s faces and hid lots of eggs. I am not sure who had a better time, the kids or the youth! Grace Press — April 2016 Interesting posters have been showing up in my email box. They are from the National Presbyterian Women Coordinating Team. They are working to readjust stereotypes of “church ladies”. Hey, we started doing that years ago here at Grace!! One poster alludes to church ladies – aren’t they the ones who wear comfortable shoes? They evidently translate that to mean “old ladies shoes.” They have not seen the shoes worn by the Women of Grace!!!!! We wear all kinds, sizes and designs, depending on what we are doing at the time. There is even one who frequently kicks off her shoes to finish tasks in her stocking feet. She can move faster without shoes! Another poster shows a plate of cupcakes – don’t those “church ladies” gather in the kitchen a lot? You bet we do, for many projects, meals, receptions. Many times we are working with Grace Men as well, to serve the Grace Family and the community in a myriad of ways. Presbyterian Women of Grace are not just a bunch of little old ladies in orthopedic shoes, baking in our own kitchens or the church kitchen. Our Presbyterian Women of Grace gather in peace, love, joy, happiness, sadness, relief and prayer, surrounding each other with hugs while working on so many things. All Women of Grace are warmly welcomed to join us!!! One of our tasks we consider our highest privilege and honor includes all that we do for a funeral/ memorial service and reception to follow. So many ladies help by baking the cookies and bars, making the sandwiches in the church kitchen, providing more cookies, the chips and the fruit. All of the glassware is brought out with care, silver is polished, candles and napkins are prepared. The famous Presbyterian Punch is thawed and prepared in the big punch bowl. Coffee is made and real cream is in the cream pitcher! It is such a special caring and loving time when family and friends gather for a funeral/memorial service and reception to follow. Our most recent gathering was for our much loved Rev. Charlie Galbraith and all of his family, extended family, church family, peers and community family. We sincerely thank all who helped in any way. I started a list for hand written thank you notes. When my list exceeded 50, I just could not write that many in a timely manner, as my Mama taught me to do. Thank you all!!!!!!!!!! It truly was a reunion with deep love and compassion for Charlie, Fran, all of their children and grandchildren, former members, adult “kids” of our senior members. All came home to say farewell to Charlie. There is much that should take place before such a time as I’ve written about above. Back to that poster thing. Our Elizabeth Circle meets the 2nd Tuesday, 9:30 A.M. in the Worship Center. The next one is April 12th!!!! This group is not made up of a bunch of grumbling old ladies. Far From It!!!! Pastor John leads us in a Bible Study portion but we also catch up on all the needs of our Grace Family. This is the good church gossip – if you do not know what that is, you have missed some sermons! (Please continue on page 16) Reaching Up - Reaching Out! PAGE #15 Grace Press — April 2016 (Article continued from page 15) We discern where we fit into helping, have reports on all our projects (the number of these have grown incredibly the last few years!!!), discuss new/more projects and where we all fit into helping with them. Many discussions take place too. Our Elizabeth Circle Chairlady, Suzy Murray, mentioned one day that given some of our discussions and her own organized mind – she always has a plan - which she has written into a journal. It contains all of her plans for her obituary, Memorial Service and every other detail her family needs to know about her decisions. Our previous Pastor had a form he hoped all of us would complete and file at the church. It was a way to plan our own service – exactly as we wish it will be. It was instantly found on the church computer and copies were handed out to all the ladies before the discussion ended. Averill is soooooo efficient!!!! Pastor John has mentioned several times about a project for everyone – write your own obituary – now. Of course this is a way to take inventory of our lives, before it is too late. We can change – before we pass from this world. We cannot procrastinate on this however, we never know when God will say – it is your time to join me, now! This is all good, wonderful, helpful, necessary and makes life so much easier for those we leave behind. But there are other certain things we sincerely need to think about, plan, decide and document legally before we get any closer to the time of our own Memorial Service. We all need to talk openly, honestly, sincerely, lovingly - just how we want medical care to be done with a terminal or catastrophic diagnosis. Truthfully, this needs to be done long before there is a diagnosis and while the mind is in the best stage it can be. This is the time to define quality of life issues. This “the talk” means talking with our parents, siblings and older children. It is shunned even more than “the talk” parents dread to approach with their children. Note to parents – you need to be doing this “the talk” at a much younger age than your parents sort of said a few things to you!!!!!!! There is nothing morbid or nosey about asking about insurance. Do you have a code book of all accounts and passwords? That’s a new one now that so much of our life is hidden in the computer or phone. It is perfectly ok to find out which doctors are caring for your loved one, what medications and their dosage etc. etc. they are on. Do you carry a current and complete list of your meds in your wallet right now? You see, you may be unconscious and it makes a world of difference in that frantic ER if someone has all of that information for you. I’ve frequently said I don’t do tattoos but it may be a good thing to have a lovely “DNR” imprinted on my chest. That stands for Do Not Resuscitate. Being a nurse, I’ve seen a whole lot in health care and I do not want to be hooked up to tubes all over me to add a week or so to God’s time. When God says its time, I’m ready. There is so much information on-line now. Good medical information – that will clearly spell out what many end of life treatments are, how they work, what they do or do not accomplish. I have no financial interest in Mayo Clinic.org but it is a great legitimate place to start your search on all things medical. Now is the time to decide what, how, when, how long do I want such procedures done to me. (Please continue on page 17) PAGE #16 Reaching Up - Reaching Out! Grace Press — April 2016 (Article continued from page 16) When do I say, ok God, I am on YOUR time, not my time. Once you are hooked up with all those tubes, it is not easy to have a change of mind. Yes, it is a difficult subject for many but we all need to come to grips with our own thoughts first and then have “the talk” with our family. And - - - these decisions need to be documented to meet state standards. That means – they will hold up in court. Your doctor needs a copy, your power of attorney needs a copy, your medical power of attorney needs a copy, your family needs to know your wishes and have copies of everything too. When the time comes, your copy needs to be taped to the headboard of the bed you are in. If you change beds, that copy needs to move with you. Just having this information in the chart or in someone’s pocket doesn’t cut it. Ok – this may have sounded like a pretty dreary and grim topic for Grace Press. In reality, doing all this will be the best gift you can give your family and yourself. I’m guessing, but I am pretty sure Pastor John would be most happy to talk with you about planning this part of your future. Here is a link where you can go to fill out and print your Health Care Directive (Living Will) and a Medical Power of Attorney. Hold CTRL & click > Living Will Forms | Free Health Care Directive Template (US) | LawDepot The Medical Power of Attorney is not the same as a legal Power of Attorney but it would make sense if you chose the same person for both. Who knows, this could lead to a desire to have a program at the church – open to all, to find out more. If you think this would be helpful, please email Presbyterian Women at [email protected] Saturday, April 23rd is the Troop 232 Scouting for Karz - Car Show on the church grounds. PW and GPM will be the only food purveyors on the grounds and of course we need help – men and women – to prep, cook, bake, package, serve and always – clean up better than we found it! The Troop requested PW bring out the jewelry (aka Stones) to sell that day. We will. So, we need help with set up Friday the 22nd, work the sale and clean up the 23rd. This is a totally new venture for all of us. Troop 232 is advertising this show big time, telling the world that their sponsor (home base) is Grace Presbyterian Church. What a time to work the project and promote Grace Presbyterian and what it means to be a child of God in the Grace Family. Please email us the times when you can help. [email protected]. Remember – Elizabeth Circle Tuesday, April 12th, 9:30 A.M., Sanctuary - Car Show prep Friday, April 22nd – Car Show and Sale the 23rd. Hope you all come join the fun and excitement! Remember to email us when you can help/work. Thanks and hugs, Margie Schroeder and all the GPW Reaching Up - Reaching Out! PAGE #17 Grace Press — April 2016 Grace Presbyterian Men LORD, WE ARE ALL SINNERS AND DO NOT DESERVE YOUR GRACE. ALLOW THE HOLY SPIRIT TO GUIDE THE GRACE PRESBYTERIAN MEN TO BECOME MORE CHRIST- CENTERED AND OPEN OUR HEARTS AND MINDS IN GLORY TO YOU. . . Below is a list of projects that we as a group have committed to serve. I also want to ask for each man at Grace to commit to each other. We talked about different projects during our February meeting. But I think the most important project or need we have is to start reaching out to each other and share our Love of Christ thru Fellowship. We need to band together by serving others but we also need to share our thoughts, ideas and beliefs with each other. Have you talked to another Man at Grace and invited him to share a part of your Life? It is time. The first step could be to serve or attend one of the events below: Sunday, April 3 - Pass out bags after each service for filling with supplies for the Wenholtz House. Week of April 4 -10th - Fill the bag with non-perishable food and supplies for Wenholtz House and return them to Grace. Monday, April 4th - 6:30 PM - GPM Meeting at Nolan's Restaurant at Staples and Yorktown. All Elders and all men are welcome to share in a meal, bring a friend. Tuesday, April 12th - Deliver bags to Wenholtz House (Call Fred or Buzz if you would like to help deliver bags) Friday & Saturday, April 22 and 23rd - Setup for Scouting 4 Karz - Car Show and serve food for the event. Scout Troop 232 is holdining the first Corpus Christi Car Show at Grace. Details will be shared at the GPM meeting & also Scouts will host Car Show planning meeting Sunday, April 3rd at 2:00 p.m. in the Scout Room behind the church. All interested in helping GPM, GPW, or the Scouts please attend. Sunday, April 24th – GPM Spring Fund Raiser – We will be serving Smoked Pork, Beans and Rice to the Congergation @ $10.00 a plate after the first service until 2:00 PM. As you can see we will have a busy April. Please consider giving your time, ideas, muscle and support to make these upcoming events a success. The Grace Men are still here and looking forward to growth in Fellowship and serving others. We are looking for new members and fresh ideas. You can find us on Facebook, search GPM Corpus Christi, or email me at [email protected] to sign up. Thru Christ all things are possible. Fred Christy 361-462-4664 [email protected] PAGE #18 Reaching Up - Reaching Out! Grace Press — April 2016 Special Word to All, By taking just a few extra moments of your time, you can make our Renee Robert’s school class the happiest class at Mireles Elementary School. Every time you open a packaged product such as food, plastic products (including the big bags of plates and bowls that we use at the church!), some “undies” and socks, school supplies, office supplies – look for that rectangle that says BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION. Clip it out, cut it off, whatever you have to do, to save it. Bring all of those BOX TOP FOR EDUCATION pieces to church and place them in our basket on the information table by the Narthex entrance door. Yes, some are very tiny so you have to look for them. They are very valuable! The school redeems them for equipment. It is a win-win – you are eating or using or wearing the stuff anyway – Renee’s class could win the school competition. Presbyterian Women have been collecting for a long time. Recently we gave Renee a stuffed, really stuffed, quart bag of these little pieces. Her class is so excited – and will be even more so if they win the competition. Let’s make it happen!!!!! This is a form of recycling so while you are in the saving mood – please remember to save all of your aluminum cans. Please rinse them out to deter an ant invasion and then, if you are able, please smash the cans and bag them up. If you can’t smash them, we have a few who will release aggression on them real quick! Please bring them to church. We will soon have our quarterly run to the recycle company. All of that money goes to PW general operations so we can budget more donations. If you happen to have a large amount of metals that can be recycled, please let us know. We even take old aluminum window frames. If you have a question about what we can take, please call Roger Schroeder at 994-1327. Roger, Sandy Jerabek, Rick Gonzales and Fred Christy are our faithful transporters. This keeps the aluminum out of the landfill, it is reused to make more items far more efficiently than using new material and we get money to help others. Can’t beat that!!! Oh – one more thing. We used to collect Campbell Soup labels. We received word from the company, that program has been discontinued. Guessing they just could not compete with the ever expanding BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION. Thanks for your help on these projects. Margie Schroeder, PW Moderator Reaching Up - Reaching Out!
