welcome!
This has been an excellent year for your University. Last year
in this column I was able to tell you that the University had just
been named among the three best places to work in the
world outside the USA in a poll of international scientists.
This year the same poll, carried out by The Scientist magazine,
ranked Dundee the best place to work in Europe. This news
came shortly after the Sunday Times named the University
of Dundee “Scottish University of the Year” in their popular
University Guide.
Nico Bohmert of the German alumni group visiting
Dianne Pemberton-Pigott at the University’s Alumni Relations office.
This has been a year of firsts for the University’s Alumni Relations.
We held our first telephone campaign last autumn and at the
same time launched the new Annual Fund to which many of you
generously donated. See page 33 for the full story.
As we go to press, your brand new online services are being
prepared for you. Imagine a directory where you can search for
lost friends; a facility to offer your expertise to your old faculty,
and the opportunity to network with other alumni working in
your industry... now you won’t lose touch with old friends thanks
to an ‘email for life’ facility. Sound great? It is, and it’s FREE!
Here’s the hitch. It’s up to you to opt in. Try it!
If you have a problem, contact us and we’ll help you sort it out.
Find out more on pages 16 and 17.
I’m sure you will all agree that the enormity of the Asian Tsunami
will be with us for a long time. Here at the University we
were worried about those of you who were in the region over
Christmas. To date we have no confirmation of loss but close
encounters in some cases.
Meanwhile the warmth and affection which you, our alumni,
hold for the University has been very clearly demonstrated in
your spectacular response to the University’s first telephone
fundraising appeal. When plans for this campaign were first
mooted we had no idea what to expect. I have been, quite
genuinely, bowled over by your generosity. On the strength of
the first campaign, we are confident that the Annual Fund will
meet its three year target of £400,000. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank you all and to personally assure you that
your pledges will be used to provide for our students, now and
in the future the best possible environment in which to develop
their potential. As part of that plan the campus is currently
undergoing a major redevelopment, with cutting edge facilities
for learning, student living and research, putting us in a leading
position to compete internationally for the best students and
the highest calibre staff. I hope you will make 2005 a year in
which you return to see how things are moving on.
The Discovery Lecture, this year to be delivered by Germaine
Greer over the new graduation period on 25 June, gives an ideal
opportunity to revisit, reconnect with old friends and explore
what the university has to offer your career and life development.
Finally I would like to welcome the recently formed Dundee
University Local Alumni club, along with the new clubs that
have been started up all over the world in the last year.
Thanks to the enthusiasm of our alumni there are now clubs in
Australia, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, South Korea, Nigeria,
Chicago and across Scotland.
As the University of Dundee approaches its 40th anniversary
celebrations in 2007 we recognise more than ever the
importance of the people involved along the way and look
forward to continuing close contact with the ever-growing
family of alumni.
Go well
Stay in touch, and come back to see us when you can.

UNIVERSITY OF THE YEAR 2004
The Sunday Times University Guide named the University of
Dundee ‘Scottish University of the Year 2004’. Dundee was
short-listed with University College London, Durham, Kingston
and Manchester for the title of ‘UK University of the Year’,
only the second time that a Scottish university has been
short-listed for this title.
The results also revealed that Dundee alumni have the highest
starting salaries of any graduates in Scotland and north of Oxford.
Dundee was commended for, amongst other rankings,
achieving the top rating in Scotland for teaching excellence,
new campus developments and its highly successful
access programme.
DUNDEE TO LEAD GENETIC HEALTH PROJECT
The University is to play a key role in a new, ground-breaking
genetic health project. Bringing together Scotland’s five Medical
Schools, the project will assess genetic predisposition to heart
disease, diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis and mental health, and
has been awarded £4.4 million by the Scottish Executive.
The Genetic Health Initiative (GHI) will focus on individuals and
their close relatives in order to assess the genetic predisposition
to these common diseases which affect thousands of people
in Scotland. It will draw on comprehensive health care records,
but add a genetic dimension to determine to what extent
ill health is an inherited trait and how other factors, such as
lifestyle, are influential.
The programme will link anonymous information on the lifestyle
and healthcare history of participants with their genetic profile,
allowing the team to identify those most at risk of developing
disease and create preventative healthcare strategies.
Professor Andrew Morris, Chair of Diabetic Medicine at the
University and Principal Investigator of the GHI Initiative said:
“This is a great opportunity for us to define and target key
factors that underpin many of the major diseases that affect
the people of Scotland and ensure they receive the medications
that have the greatest chance of treatment success with the
lowest chance of any unwanted effects”.
INSTALLATION OF DUNDEE’S
FIRST FEMALE RECTOR
The University was saddened by the death of revered inaugural
Rector, Sir Peter Ustinov, in March 2004.
However, 2004 was a memorable year in the history of
Dundee Rectors for another more celebratory reason, when
Lorraine Kelly, the first ever female Rector, was installed in April.
An experienced and award-winning journalist and broadcaster,
Lorraine has hosted a number of high profile television and
radio shows in the UK. She is also the Patron of the University’s
annual fund, see page 34 for details.
Following tradition, her inauguration ceremony took place
at the Bonar Hall, after the traditional ‘drag’ in the Rector’s
carriage from the city chambers to campus.
The day after her installation, Lorraine’s television show
from the University Tower café was broadcast live to almost
two million viewers. The show featured an interview with
Hollywood actor and honorary graduate Brian Cox, who spoke
about his involvement with the £4 million fundraising campaign
for the University’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Research.
NEW BUILDINGS TAKE SHAPE IN THE RE-DEVELOPMENT OF THE CAMPUS
Ambitious plans to transform the city centre campus in time
for the University’s 40th anniversary in 2007 have been put
into effect. Two new buildings, the Queen Mother Research
Centre and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research, are both
scheduled to open in 2005. Work has also begun on the
Heathfield site, which will be the location for new student
residences due to open in 2006.
4
“These developments will give us one of the finest city centre
campuses in the UK” said David Yule, Director of Campus
Services. “Our campus plan is starting to take shape now and
will combine fine student accommodation with new teaching
facilities, new research buildings and an ambitious University
Green that will transform the campus.”

£7 MILLION FOR
UNIVERSITY SPORT FACILITIES
The University is spending £7 million on new sports facilities in a
welcome investment in health and wellbeing in the city.
The investment will see the University house a regional centre
for strength and conditioning for performance sport and
become a hub for health and wellbeing activity for the local
community. Extended facilities at Riverside and on campus
including hockey pitches, floodlit five-a-side pitches, a new
fitness suite and three squash courts will be available for use by
the public, staff and students.
At Riverside sports ground, two state-of-the-art artificial grass
surfaces for hockey and six five-a-side outdoor floodlit pitches will
be developed. A pavilion with new changing facilities and a social
area will be built. The development work will begin in June with
facilities opening in late 2006 at a cost of £3.4 million.
On campus, three squash courts, a large extended fitness
suite and a special strength and conditioning centre for toplevel athletes will be situated on the ground floor of a new
northwards extension to the current sports centre.
The fitness suite will cover 450 square metres with a large
range of training equipment including extensive cardiovascular
training provision. The new build will cost £3.6 million and
will be completed in summer 2007.

DAVID MACH TAKES UP VISITING PROFESSOR ROLE
Duncan of Jordanstone graduate and internationally renowned
artist David Mach has taken up the post of Visiting Professor of
Inspiration and Discovery.
Mach’s first visit to Dundee in his new role was as guest
speaker at a ‘science meets art’ symposium entitled ‘Inspiration
and Discovery: Engaging with Life Sciences through Life Arts’.
The symposium kicked off a collaborative project between
scientists and artists from across the University, which aims
to stimulate thought and discussion, and inspire creative
collaborations at the boundaries of art and science.
Since the symposium in October, Mach has paid a number
of visits to Dundee to find out about the work of staff and
students in the School of Life Sciences and at Duncan of
Jordanstone. The ultimate vision of the project is the creation
of a new piece of public art by Mach, inspired by the research
he has carried out with University artists and scientists. It is
intended that the work will eventually be displayed at the new
Campus Green, in the heart of the re-developed campus.

conferred with honorary degrees at the 2004 graduation
ceremonies.
A revolutionary new course for teacher training which will
allow prospective secondary teachers to study for their
post-grad qualification at a distance has been launched by
the Faculty of Education and Social Work. The course also
helps those who want to change career by minimising loss of
earnings as they take their professional training.
From the arts world, Edinburgh Book Festival director
Catherine Lockerbie and art historian Duncan MacMillan were
honoured for their work in the fields of art and literature.
Other recipients were Professor Gavin Brown, a distinguished
mathematician and Vice Chancellor of the University of Sydney,

oilfield services company, Schlumberger, the internationally
renowned surgeon Lord Naren Patel, mountaineer and rescuer
Hamish McInnes, Colin Campbell QC, Dean of the Faculty of
Advocates, and Larry Rolland, former Chairman of University
Court and award winning architect.
LAUNCH OF DUNDEE UNIVERSITY PRESS
The launch of Dundee University Press Ltd (DUP) in October
2004 marked the start of a new venture between a number of
leading players from academia and publishing in Scotland.
DUP is dedicated to publishing high-quality books that
appeal to both an academic and non-academic audience.
The company, the latest in a series of University spin outs, is a
partnership between Dundee and Edinburgh-based publisher
Birlinn Ltd which took over Tuckwell Press.
Up to eight titles are planned for the first year, with plans to
increase this year on year. DUP’s output will not be restricted
to work by academics alone, but will also encompass titles
from non-academic authors.

£1M FOR INVESTIGATION INTO
HOW EXERCISE PREVENTS DIABETES
A University-led project to establish scientific evidence on how
exercise prevents weight gain, obesity and Type 2 Diabetes has
been awarded nearly £9m by the European Commission, with
£1m coming directly to Dundee.
The money will also start the long process of developing a drug
which will mimic the beneficial effects of exercise for people
who are unable to exercise themselves.
The project responds to the urgent problem of obesity, which
has increased three-fold in the UK over the last twenty years.
The obesity epedemic is predicted to be followed by a large
increase in Type 2 Diabetes which causes many chronic and
debilitating health problems.
Professor Grahame Hardie of the School of Life Sciences,
who is co-ordinating the project explained: “The link between
exercise and prevention of Type 2 Diabetes is very convincing but
is currently only a correlation, rather like the original evidence that
smoking causes lung cancer. Once it is known exactly how exercise
prevents the disease, we will be able to give people more rational
advice about exercise and health, and also put more pressure on
European governments to adopt policies that make it easier for
people to increase their level of exercise.”
Grahame is leading the five year research project with
colleagues from 26 laboratories across 13 European countries
and corporate partners including AstraZeneca and Unilever.
NEWS DIGEST
Professor Alan Newell of the Division of Applied Computing
was the only person outside North America to receive a grant
from the American Alzheimer’s Association in 2004.
Alan will be investigating how digital TV can be used
to remind people with Alzheimer’s to carry out tasks that
they may forget, such as taking their medicine.
Sue Black OBE has joined the University
as Professor of Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology and
launched the UK’s first-ever degree course in forensic
anthropology here at Dundee.
Other areas of forensic research are also being developed
at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels – making
Dundee the only University in the UK to offer such
specialised training in this critical field.
With skills that are in demand at crime scenes and
disaster areas all over the world, Sue has provided her
services in Kosovo and Bosnia and she spent time in
Thailand at the end of 2004 identifying victims of the
devastating Asian Tsunami.
Here she demystifies the work of the
forensic anthropologist…
From the smiling skull uncovered for Taggart or reconstructed
for Morse to the heroines of Kathy Reichs and Patricia
Cornwell, few disciplines have suffered as much from the
intrusion of popular media culture as forensic anthropology.
So what is forensic anthropology? The word ‘forensic’ is
derived from the Latin ‘forensis’ meaning ‘pertaining to the
court’ and anthropology literally means ‘the study of man’.
Therefore by definition, forensic anthropology is the study of
man for the purposes of informing the court.
Within the UK, forensic anthropologists assist the investigative
forces in the identification of the deceased. The victim may
recently have passed from this world and be a relatively intact
corpse, or the body may show significant decomposition or
indeed be skeletal or fragmented in its presentation. Our
prime function is not to determine the cause or manner of the
death as that is the remit of the forensic pathologist, ours is to
determine the identity of the deceased.
In the last 10-15 years we have been more frequently asked to
assist the international community in the investigation of war
crimes, abuses of human rights and humanitarian disasters.
The mass graves of Rwanda, Yugoslavia and Iraq require our
assistance as much as the disasters of the World Trade Centre,
Bali bombing, Madrid train crash and the Asian Tsunami.
How does somebody become a forensic anthropologist?
It differs from country to country, but at the University of
Dundee training takes around eight years, through a BSc to
MA and then PhD. Eight years may seem like a long time but
the opinion of a forensic anthropologist can be sufficient to
sway a jury to convict within the UK and pass a life sentence.
It can equally persuade a jury to serve the death penalty in
countries such as Iraq.
This is not a profession for the weak or the mildly interested.
There is no such thing as a typical day and there is no such
thing as an easy job. One case may find you in the wilds of
Scotland excavating an abandoned quarry for the skeletal
remains of a mother and child who have been missing for
27 years. But it may equally find you in the depths of Sierra
Leone being surrounded by armed guards whose sole aim
is to prevent the rebels from capturing you as a hostage.
Glamorous? Oh dear me no! Nobody looks good in a scene of
crime paper suit. Demanding? Unquestionably. 12 hour shifts
for 6 weeks without a break. Interesting? Absolutely no doubt.
No two cases or two days are ever the same. Addictive?
Without question. Each and every case is a challenge that
demands to be conquered.

PhD visit www.dundee.ac.uk/biocentre/uafa_sb.htm

from Dundee
to
rock stardom
With Mercury Music Prize and Brit nominations,
a multi-platinum album and sell-out tour, Snow
Patrol have had a meteoric rise to fame over the
last 12 months. But the road to success has been
a long one and it all began over 10 years ago in
Dundee, when Gary Lightbody (MA 1998) met
Mark McLelland (MA Hons Financial Economics
1998) during a drink-sodden Freshers’ week...
The group had already started playing around the city
when they brought in another friend,Tom Simpson
(BA Drawing and Painting, 1995).
“I guess we’re a rock band, but I don’t really know
how I would describe us…I leave that to journalists”
says lead singer Gary Lightbody. If you haven’t
already come across Snow Patrol “the darlings of
an effervescent Scottish music scene”, “one of the
UK’s brightest new hopes” and “poised songwriting
and soul-searching lyrics” are just a few of the
superlatives that have been used to describe the
band and their music over the past 12 months.
But back in 1994 when Gary and Mark decided to start
a band it was more for fun than fame and fortune.
After an early legal-wrangle over the band’s name
(they were originally called Polar Bear) Snow Patrol’s
early days saw them establishing a local fan base in
Dundee. “It was a good training ground” says Jonny.
“You can get gigs easily enough in Dundee and people
turn out for them so that gives you the experience to
go out and play elsewhere. It’s also well facilitated for
things like rehearsing and recording, so bands don’t
have to move until the time is right.”
“When we were students at Dundee the band was a
hobby, it was all a bit of fun for the first few years.”
says Gary. In fact it was the Dundee connection
that brought together three of the five members of
the band. Jonny Quinn came from Northern Ireland
to join Gary in Dundee, and went on to become the
band’s drummer.
“I’m a great believer in fate” says Gary. “The time
and place had a lot to do with the eventual success
of the band. This last year wouldn’t have happened
for us without Dundee, it all stems from there.”
The ‘right time’ for Snow Patrol meant a move to
Glasgow, where they continued to tour and release
more material to critical, if not commercial, success.
But it was a change of record label that brought a
shift in momentum, and led to the multi-platinum
selling album Final Straw, released in February 2004.
The move to a new record label was partly
orchestrated by another Dundee graduate, Paul
Smernicki (BSc Town & Regional Planning 1993) one
of the three-strong team who run Fiction, a division of
Polydor Records. Gary explains: “I met Paul through
Tom when I was a student. He was always really keen
to know what was going on with the band so when
Snow Patrol parted company with Jeepster he was
the catalyst for us being signed to Fiction.”
As acclaim for the album grew, along with the Snow
Patrol fan-base, 2004 catapulted the band into a
whirlwind of sell-out tours, award nominations
and media interest. And with the long-awaited
recognition came even more demand. “We’re a
really hard working band” says Tom. “We worked
solidly through most of last year, right up to New
Year’s eve.”
8
But while it may not be glamorous, the life of a
rock band isn’t all just hard work: “Travelling was
definitely one of the highlights of the last year,” says
Gary. “We try to get out and see the places we visit
rather than just get stuck in a routine of arriving,
playing, then leaving without taking anything in.”
“Writing an album better than Final Straw” is,
according to Tom, high on the agenda for 2005.
So what can Snow Patrol fans expect from their
next album? While the band is usually associated
with songs about the less sugar-coated aspects of
love and relationships, some of the lyrics on Final
Straw had a more political edge. But political
commentary isn’t an area that Gary is consciously
moving into with his song writing: “Coming from
Northern Ireland I’ve seen a lot of bigotry and small
mindedness, and moving to Dundee was a chance
to get away from that” he says. “You’re still aware of
what’s going on in the world, you can’t ignore it, but
I’m wary of overlaps between music and politics.”
With a support slot on U2’s 2005 summer stadium
tour Snow Patrol have long eclipsed the music
venues where they started off in Dundee. So what
ambitions are left to achieve? “I’d like to play the
Caird Hall” says Gary. “It was the biggest venue in
Dundee when we started up, so I suppose it’s a bit
of a romantic notion to want to come back and play
there now.”
While Snow Patrol still describe themselves as an
Irish band, they have long-since counted Scotland
as their adopted home – and together with Franz
Ferdinand and Belle and Sebastian have played a
major part in creating the current buzz around the
Glasgow music scene. But if they do ever decide to
make-good on Gary’s Caird Hall ambition, there will
be many people ready to welcome them back to the
city where the band was conceived.
“The successes
of the last year wouldn’t have
happened for us
without Dundee,
it all stems from there.”

Highland Stoneware’s
Dundee roots
The pioneers in 1975. From left: Gordon Kilgour, David Grant, Paul Phipps, Rae Phipps,
Grahame Clark, with the Highland Stoneware factory behind.
Highland Stoneware was the brainchild of David Grant,
a student at Duncan of Jordanstone from 1966-1971.
Born and raised in the Highlands, it was as a student that David
first conceived the idea of setting up a pottery company in that
area of Scotland, both as a means of returning to his roots and
of contributing to the local economy. After graduating, David
moved to London to take his MA, but he never lost sight of
his original dream and Highland Stoneware became a reality in
1974 when the company was officially incorporated.
Although David was the originator of the project, from the
outset Highland Stoneware has drawn on the talents of a
number of DJCAD graduates. David met his future wife
Norah Sullivan during his student days in Dundee. Norah’s
creative skills were an integral part of the business from the
early days. Paul Phipps and Rae Phipps were college friends and
the first to join David in Lochinver. Another DJCAD alumna,
Linda MacLeod, joined the company after graduating in 1975.
The natural beauty of
a small fishing port on
the shores of Lochinver,
framed by the impressive
backdrop of the rugged
mountains of the
northwest Highlands,
provides the inspiration for
a company of potters and
artists whose work can be
found in homes all over
the world. Formally known
as Highland Stoneware,
the company is this
year celebrating its 30th
anniversary, all thanks to
the original vision, creative
talent and entrepreneurial
spirit of a group of
graduates of Duncan of
Jordanstone College of
Art & Design.
“The decorators have always been inspired by the beauty
of their natural surroundings and a wide range of patterns
has been created, often featuring the scenery, flora or fauna
of Scotland.” says David. “While the artists are trained to
paint all the firm’s current patterns, they have always been
encouraged to make their own variations and innovations,
so that each piece of Highland Stoneware is unique.”
Register with Dundee-Reunited.com and you could be in with a chance of winning one of the two pieces of Highland Stoneware
which David Grant has generously donated (shown above). See pages 18-19 for details of how to register.

Dundee’s
award-winning centre
with
alumni around the
world
The melting pot of cultures that makes up the
University’s student population not only creates a buzz
about the campus, but across the city as well.
Ibrahima Coulibaly
(LLM in Resources Law
& Policy 2000)
Dundee’s success at attracting international students
was acknowledged in 2004, when the highly prestigious
Queen’s Award for Enterprise was awarded to the Centre
for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP).
I work for the National Bureau
for Studies and Development
(BNETD), a corporation
renowned in the
West African sub-region.
The skills I acquired in
Dundee, both in English and
in the legal, environmental
and financial aspects of the
minerals sector, have given
me a real advantage
in my career.
In the last ten years the centre has established itself as
the leading international postgraduate institution in the
field of energy and natural resources law and policy, with
its graduates returning to countries all over the world to
put into practice the knowledge they gained in Dundee.
We caught up with a few CEPMLP alumni to see where
their qualifications have taken them…
Cheng Lei
(LLM in Resources Law &
Policy 1998)
I am now general secretary of
the China Society of Natural
Resources and a supervisor
of doctorate students in
my institute. I believe the
knowledge I gained in
Dundee will continue to
benefit me in the future.
Sylvester Matemu
(LLM International &
Comparative Water Law &
Policy 2002)
Efuntomi Lukanmbi (LLM in Petroleum Law & Policy 2003)
I am based in Lagos, Nigeria, working as part of the oil and
gas team in my law firm. We recently concluded negotiations
for two indigenous Nigerian companies that were awarded oil
blocs. My programme at the CEPMLP gave me a foundation on
most of the legal issues involved in the negotiations.
12
I am Private Secretary to the
Minister of Science Technology
and Higher Education in
Tanzania. The knowledge
I gained at Dundee has really
strengthened my negotiation
skills. My thesis document is
now being used to develop
strategies on how best to
manage transboundary
waters.
Onunnadire Isiguzo
(LLM in Petroleum Law &
Policy 2002)
My exposure and experience
in Dundee has broadened my
horizon and general outlook
on life. My analytical skills
have improved greatly and
my knowledge of petroleum
law and policy has not only
helped me in that field but in
other practice areas too.
Bond Abbe (MBA 2000)
After my MBA, I moved back to Nigeria. Today, I work with
Ericsson Nigeria as Senior Solutions Engineer.
I attribute my success to the knowledge gained through my
course. Many of the scenarios we examined in the course have
come up in work situations. I often wonder how I would have
dealt with them if I hadn’t gone to Dundee.
Tolulope Lukanmbi
(MSc in Energy Studies 2002)
I work as an upstream
economist with the upstream
subsidiary of TOTAL S.A, the
fourth largest oil producing
company in Nigeria.
I have to give credit
to CEPMLP for the practical
training sessions I took
part in. These courses have
served as a good professional
background for my job.
Lida Skifte Lennert (LLM in Petroleum Law & Policy 2002)
Diego San Miguel
(LLM in Mineral Law &
Policy 2001)
When I came back to
Argentina I really saw the
value of what I learned
from the LL.M. programme,
and the enormous value of
studying and living in the UK.
I left Dundee four years ago
and I keep saying that
I spent the best times of my
life there, rain included!
I believe that the international experience I gained at CEPMLP
was a qualifying factor in my appointment at the Foreign
Affairs Ministry in Greenland. I have been able to use my
dissertation practically by incorporating its recommendations in
the government office dealing with petroleum matters.
In the last ten years CEPMLP has established itself as the
leading international postgraduate institution in the field of
energy and natural resources law and policy.
The main activities are the provision of 1-2 year taught
Masters degrees, a PhD programme and the delivery of short
professional training seminars in the UK and abroad.
CEPMLP is constantly adapting the structure and content of
its teaching programmes in response to changes in the market
and to the suggestions of students and alumni.

Can renewable
energy
save the planet?
By Brian Wilson
Energy is not the sexiest of
political subjects. In fact,
as I learned during my
stint as Energy Minister,
the only events that really
concentrate minds on it
are the occasional power
cut and the less occasional
price rise. Then everyone
wants to know what has
gone wrong.
Brian Wilson MP
is a University of Dundee
graduate who was Energy
Minister from 2001-03.
He is currently the
Prime Minister’s Special
Representative on
Overseas Trade.
My own interest in the energy
industry has continued to
increase, even as my departure
from political life comes closer.
The questions raised by energy
policy are so enormous, both
nationally and globally, that
it is difficult just to lay one’s
interest aside. After all, the
future of the planet may well
depend upon it.
As an alternative, I have been trying to promote what I call an
indigenous energy policy which would continue to hedge our
bets through dependence on a wide range of energy sources,
as at present. Of course we should promote renewables but
equally we should recognise that clean coal technology can
offer even more in terms of carbon reduction, both nationally
and globally.
Setting targets is all very well, and it is useful consciencesalving therapy for a wide range of politicians in search of
green credentials. But targets cannot be delivered without
major projects and widespread public reluctance to make
that logical linkage partly explains why I am sceptical about
too much reliance being placed on renewables to deliver our
carbon reduction targets.
And then, of course, there is nuclear of which I am an
enthusiastic supporter. In the age of global warming, does it
really make sense to get rid of the one significant source of
power generation which does not result in harmful emissions
into the atmosphere? Of course it does not - and I suspect
that this is a 21st century truth that will have to be faced up to
sooner rather than later.
My other big doubt about current energy policy lies in the
extraordinary reliance - particularly for a country which has
historically been an exporter of energy - which is in future to
be placed on imported gas. By 2020, according to current
projections, 70 per cent of our electricity will come from gas
and, as the North Sea declines, 90 per cent of that will be
imported. Does that make strategic sense?
I was a supporter of renewable energy long before I had any
expectation of becoming Energy Minister and it was one of the
great privileges of the job that I was in a position to drive this
agenda forward. Not that it was a universally popular cause.
For instance, I treasure the memory of the Bishop of Hereford
comparing me to “the Taliban destroying the statues” because
I approved a windfarm in mid-Wales.

stateof the
union
Chart-topping bands have been formed, lifelong
friendships established and romances blossomed.
Ask any former Dundee student and the chances are that
they spent countless memorable evenings at the Union.
But the DUSA of today is probably very different from the
building you remember from your student days. After a yearlong renovation project, a state-of-the-art makeover has been
unveiled, and the results are very impressive. In total, £3.8m has
been spent on the most recent work to upgrade the building.
Together with the construction of the Mono bar in 2001, a total
of £4.5m has been invested in DUSA over the last three years.
The project has brought changes to most parts of the building,
including the creation of a north extension, which houses the
new Air Bar. To make way for new office space, The Tav has been
closed. Pete’s Bar and the Liar Bar have also been refurbished and
re-named Level 5 and the Liar as part of the makeover.
Now, thanks to an initiative from current DUSA President
Fraser Millar, all alumni will be able to come back and see the
new-look DUSA for themselves. As from this year all alumni
will be offered automatic lifelong membership.
“The re-development project has been made possible by the
support and loyalty that alumni showed DUSA during their
time as students in Dundee” said Fraser. “Some of the money
spent by students at DUSA has been re-invested back into
the building through the refurbishment and we would like to
recognise this contribution by offering all alumni automatic life
membership.”
For information on all DUSA alumni offers, including lifelong
membership and tickets for this year’s alumni ball, see the
opposite page.

Welcome back
We look forward to welcoming all alumni back to Dundee University
for the Graduates’ Council’s annual event on 25 June. This year’s
format has been altered to create an informal and relaxed atmosphere,
and we hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be an
enjoyable and fun event.
This year’s event will be held in DUSA, and you will not fail to be
impressed by the newly extended and refurbished union building.
It is still the Union, but definitely not as you remember it! £3.2m
has been spent on the project and the results are impressive.
Recognition of this was marked recently by DUSA being voted ‘Best
Students’ Union in the UK’ at the BEDA (British Entertainment and
Dance Association) Awards.
DUSA - the new
Air Bar
We are delighted to have Professor Germaine Greer deliver the 2005
Discovery Lecture which is sure to be the highlight of the day. Her
lecture, titled ‘Regeneration, Rehabilitation or Restoration? The
Challenging Rainforest’ will no doubt be stimulating and thoughtprovoking. These are exciting times for the University which is
building an excellent reputation, both nationally and internationally,
for the high academic standards of its awards and the diversity of
degree courses it offers. The Campus is benefiting from an ambitious
development programme.
The University of Dundee is on the move, and the Graduates’ Council,
keen to help, has been looking at ways of making a more effective
contribution to the university’s growing success. Graduates’ Council
is evolving, and as part of an ongoing review an ‘away day’ has
been planned for 21 May when the Graduates’ Council Business
Committee will explore, through working groups, other areas of
activities including:
• recruitment
• supporting charitable campaigns
• governance
• building the university community
By reviewing our role and function in this way, helpful new initiatives
will be formed which will be of real value to the university. We will
share these with you on 25 June, hopefully enlisting your help in
due course.
We look forward to welcoming back all alumni to Dundee University.

Supporting
Your University
The University of Dundee has made incredible progress
since its foundation nearly 40 years ago. The celebration
of an anniversary offers both a chance to reflect on those
successes and to plan for the future. In planning our
future it is vital that we create an environment to attract
the best possible students and staff and we need your
help to do this.
It is imperative that we raise substantial funds to build on our
recent successes, including:
• Scottish University of the Year 2004/5 (Sunday Times)
• best institution to work in as a scientist (Scientist Magazine)
• third highest research income generated (pro-rata against
RAE submissions)
• steady stream of spin-out companies – 15 since 2001
Fundraising for the university has been streamlined
into three programmes:
• Major Gift Capital Projects Programme
• Vision Fund Programme
(to create endowed funding for scholarships and chairs)
• Annual Fund Programme
(to support students’ immediate needs).
Vision Fund
The University of Dundee will launch a major fundraising
campaign in 2005 to attract the best possible students and staff
and to support those students who would not even be able to
consider going to university without financial support. The Vision
Fund will provide income to support the following areas:
• Scholarships
As well as strengthening the University’s financial hardship
bursary programme, the University is creating an endowed
scholarship fund. This will enable us to attract the best students
possible to the University and also allow us to further develop
our renowned wider access programme which supports
students who would otherwise be unable to attend university.
• Endowed Chairs
The University has an excellent reputation as a researchoriented institution. Our new flagship buildings will all attract
world class academics to Dundee but we need funding to
provide support for these academic posts. Creating endowed
chairs will allow us to recruit the best possible candidates.
• Equipment
State-of-the-art buildings need world-class staff but it’s also
necessary to equip them. The Vision Fund will provide income to
ensure that the best equipment is provided for staff and students.
The Annual Fund
The Annual Fund was successfully launched in 2004 enabling
alumni to donate regular gifts to the university to augment our
bursary scheme and to enhance the campus facilities to make a
lasting difference to the lives of our students.
Major Gifts
The University is investing £160m in campus investment with
the development of several flagship buildings and research
centres including the Centre for Inter-Disciplinary Research,
the Queen Mother Research Centre, the Institute for Medical
and Science Technology, and clinical and research space in
both the Medical School and School of Life Sciences with the
Diabetes Research Campaign. Details on how you can donate
a gift to any of these projects can be found on
www.dundee.ac.uk/externalrelations/funds/
Legacies
You may not be in a position to give a gift right now but
you may wish to consider a longer term partnership with the
University by leaving a legacy in your will. This is one of the
simplest, most tax effective and long-lasting methods of giving
and protects the future of your university. We would be happy
to send you further information or have a chat either in person
or by telephone to discuss your wishes. Further information
on how you can make a bequest to the University is available
on www.dundee.ac.uk/externalrelations/funds or by
telephoning the Director of External Relations, Joan Concannon,
on 01382 345565.

INAUGURAL
Alumni
Thank
you!
TELEPHONE CAMPAIGN
An enormous thank you is extended to all our alumni
who participated in the inaugural alumni telephone
campaign last November. The student callers, the
Alumni Relations team and everyone involved with
the campaign were overwhelmed by the generosity of
alumni and the warm regard in which the University is
held by generations of Dundee graduates.
Over the course of four weeks 40 students spoke with more
than 1,700 alumni from all over the world. While the telephone
campaign asked alumni to pledge money over a three year
period – and alumni were exceptionally generous – the campaign
also enabled us to find out what interests you, our alumni, and
how the University can help you connect with each other.
The Annual Fund is expected to raise £400,000 over a three
year period leading up to the 40th anniversary celebrations
in 2007. Money is coming in steadily and we are well on track
to meet that target.
60% of the funds raised will be used to provide bursaries to
students who have shown real commitment to their education
but are at risk of being unable to remain at the University due
to genuine financial hardship. The remaining 40% of funds
will be used to improve communal student facilities such as
library resources and technical equipment.
Further information about how the pledged money will be
used will be available on the alumni web site at
www.dundee.ac.uk/alumni.
The list of donor names available at the time of going to print
is overleaf.
below: the student callers who spoke to over 1,700 of you
during the 2004 telephone campaign.
Ryan Richardson, Architecture
I found out about the University’s history, and was given advice
about future career options. I was surprised at how generous
our alumni are and how much they valued their time at the
University. I hope that if someone phones me in 10 years I will
be able to do the same.

Chocolate, provided by
