Dear friends,
Below is an article from the Area Agency on Aging team regarding hospital
admissions versus observation. It is important that you are well informed on it.
Please read and pass on:
How do you know if you are truly admitted to a hospital?
This sounds like a dumb question, but not knowing the answer can cost you a great
deal of money if you are a Medicare recipient. A person can be admitted on an
inpatient basis which is what is assumed by most of us – or a person can be
admitted on an observation basis. The statuses look the same on the surface in that
patients in both categories may stay for many days receiving medical and nursing
care and tests and treatment.
A person’s hospital admission status is determined by the admitting physician. In
many cases it will be observation, rather than inpatient, to get a sense of how the
patient is doing and to protect the hospital against being financially penalized by
Medicare for unnecessary admissions and readmissions. For example, if persons
who were originally in the hospital under observation are readmitted to the hospital,
they are not counted as readmissions. In recent years the number of patients many
hospitals admit and retain under observation has more than doubled. It is at the
time of discharge when the difference between admitted/inpatient and observation/
outpatient status becomes dramatically clear. Medicare Part A (hospital insurance)
covers the first 48 hours of an observation admission and all of the care of a person
who subsequently becomes an inpatient. Coverage for a patient who continues on
observation after 48 hours is switched to Medicare Part B which usually only
covers doctors’ services and outpatient care. This results in co-pays of some 20
percent for the doctors’ and outpatient services with no cap on hospital services and
high prices for medications which will be billed by the hospital. Spending time in
the hospital on observation also does not count toward the three consecutive days
of hospitalization needed to qualify for Medicare-covered skilled nursing facility
services if needed. All of these costs will have to be assumed by the patient or
family so please make sure to ask your doctor whether your loved one is being
admitted under observation or inpatient.

August News From The Senior Center…
Hello Friends!
How have you enjoyed your summer? I am loving it! Along with
summer comes lots of fun summer activities!
The first big activity that the Senior Center has in August is our
Annual Yard Sale!! This year our Yard Sale will begin on Saturday
August 6 and will run thru Friday August 19. We will be open Monday thru Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm (No Sunday Sales). There
will be a “Bargain Breakfast” at 8 am before the Yard Sale opens on Saturday August 6! All
proceeds from the “Bargain Breakfast” will go towards the Meals on Wheels program.
On Wednesday August 10 Steve Troyer will be with us sharing his musical
talents, so come listen to Steve and stay for lunch! Mark & Mark will be here on Wednesday
August 24. It is always a fun time when Mark & Mark are here so come tap your toes and stay
for lunch!
If anyone is interested in helping out with the organizing and operation of the Yard Sale we
could really use your help! Due to health issues for some of our regular helpers we are in dire
need of your assistance! If you can help us out call the Senior Center and ask for Beth or
Louise. Thanks!!
We are in the process of starting a Weight Watchers Program here at the Center. We will
keep you updated on the details as we progress forward!
There is so much going on and I have only touched on a few things, so please read your
Keyhole cover to cover! We wouldn’t want you to miss out on a great opportunity to enrich
your lives. I am inviting all of you to come out to the Senior Center, have some lunch and
share some laughs. Hope to see you soon!
~Beth~

The 3 D’s: Delirium,
Depression & Dementia
How to know the difference
- Similar behavioral symptoms can
mask the true problem
Delirium
• Rapid onset over minutes to days
• Consciousness is “clouded.” The person has
difficulty in: focusing their mind on something,
shifting their mind to something else or
maintaining attention.
• Poor recall for immediate and recent events
• Disorientation in time, place or person
• Rapid shifts from over to under-activity
• Slow reactions
• Unusually rapid or slow speech
• A stronger than usual startle reaction
• Disturbed sleeping/waking cycle, confusion
worse at night and/or unpleasant dreams and/or hallucinations and/or delusions.
• Symptoms usually fluctuate over the course of
the day
• A physical cause, e.g. a urinary tract infection,
is usually identifiable
Depression
• Relatively rapid onset
• Difficulty concentrating, remembering details
and making decisions
• Fatigue and decreased energy
- Jennifer
• Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness
• Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or
excessive sleeping
• Irritability, restlessness
• Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once
pleasurable
• Overeating or appetite loss
• Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps
or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment.
• Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” feelings
• Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
Dementia
• Mental decline happens slowly
• Memory loss is usually the earliest and most
noticeable symptom
• Trouble recalling recent events or recognizing
people and places
• Trouble finding the right words
• Problems planning and carrying out tasks, such
as balancing a checkbook, following a recipe or writing
a letter
• Trouble exercising judgement, such as knowing
what to do in an emergency
• Trouble controlling moods or behaviors
• Depression is common and agitation or
aggression may occur
• Not keeping up personal care such as grooming
or bathing
If you or a loved one have these symptoms,
don’t play doctor, see one!

Are you handy around the house?
Do you have any special skills?
Do you have some free time?
Would like to keep busy?
Then we are looking for you to
join our Home Maintenance Program!
We need Home Maintenance Workers to help
Mecosta County senior citizens (55 yrs. or older)
with affordable minor home maintenance and
repairs. Seniors in need are in the Big Rapids,
Mecosta, Remus, Stanwood/Canadian Lakes,
and Morley areas.
Do you mow lawns or do other yard work such
as; weeding flowerbeds, painting, decorating, or
staining? Maybe you are handy at small electrical and plumbing projects, doing light carpentry,
cleaning gutters, and/or snow removal. If you
love to clean houses or wash windows your
community needs you.
Not only do you receive an hourly wage from
the Home Maintenance Members who hire you,
you are helping seniors remain independent and
in their own homes. This is not an offer of employment with Mecosta County or the Commission on Aging but a way to connect seniors with
affordable contractors.

Christy Beam is a Texas mother whose whole life revolves around her sick daughter. Anna is a 12 year old girl who suffers from a rare disorder that leaves her unable to eat without a feeding tube. The family struggles to help Anna live a
normal life with her illness. After falling over 30 feet out of a tree, Anna lands on her head. Instead of dying or being
harmed in any way, she survives the fall, and Anna miraculously recovers from her disorder.

Ten Things I know about you
Quarantine
1) You are reading this.
“I hate to have to tell you this”, said the Doctor in a sad
compassionate voice, “but you have been unfortunately
been diagnosed with a highly contagious disease, we will
have to quarantine you and you’ll only be fed cheese and
bologna.”
2) You are human.
3)You can’t say the letter ”P” without separating your lips.
4) You just attempted to do it.
6) You are laughing at yourself.

Spectrum Health Hospice
Volunteer Orientation
Spectrum Health Hospice is offering a volunteer orientation for individuals who are interested in providing compassionate support for patients nearing the end of life. Volunteer opportunities are available for
those who can offer respite care, friendly visits, document a patient’s life story, singers, instrumentalists, visiting therapy pets and for licensed cosmetologists to support patients receiving hospice care in
their homes or at long term care facilities. If you have a caring spirit and some time to give – we can
use your help to help others! Average time commitment is one hour per week after orientation is completed.
Our volunteers select the geographic area that they would like to serve patients. We are specifically
looking for volunteers to serve in the Mecosta, Montcalm and Newaygo county communities.

Date:
September 21, 28 and October 5
Time:
