WELCOM
THE
Whew! We made it!
You may have been with us from the
beginning or joined us along the way but
through the rollercoaster journey, here we
are in 2014 celebrating our 20th year.
We’re looking forward to bringing you
another two fantastic events. In April
we’re chuffed to welcome New Model Army
and Toyah, two stalwarts of the
alternative scene who’ve never performed
for us before, together with some popular
well established bands, topped off with a
plethora of fantastic up and coming talent.
Over the past twelve months we’ve been
considering holding an enormous birthday
celebration at our 2014 Halloween event.
We’ve been discussing ideas on our social
media and web presence and are very
grateful for all the feedback received and
the suggestions you’ve given us.
Since then and all circumstances
considered, we’ve decided that a ‘Big and
Bombastic’ event might be a squash this
Halloween, so we’re going to go with ‘Sleek
and Stylish’ for our 20th Anniversary and
save the fireworks for when we come of
age next year in 2015.
One of the things that makes the Whitby
Goth Weekend
unique is the way it grew
organically from that first small meeting
of friends - the spirit of which can be still
be felt twenty years later.
We’ve met some wonderful people over the
years. Many who came to the early events
now bring their children, sometimes with a
partner they met here too. Attendees have
made friends from far and wide - some of
whom they only get to catch up with once
every six months at WGW.
We thank you all for returning to visit us,
not just as punters but also friends
bringing a spirit which is the life blood of
WGW.
With your help and support, we’ve
managed to achieve all of this while still
remaining a small independent company.
We don’t receive any public funding and
other than a small amount of assistance
from a few kind friends we’ve never had to
depend on private investment; our festival
lives and breathes through very different
types of support.
So the plan may have changed but the
magic remains! Our Halloween event will be
just as fantastic, we’ll be there, some top
Goth popsters will be there and as only a
true Spice Goth would utter “Say *you’ll* be
there”.

F R IDA Y NIGHT BA N D S
From punk princess to high priestess of TV, Toyah
Willcox is a uniquely gifted performer. Charismatic,
outspoken and impossible to categorise, she is one of
Britain’s iconic household names – an award-winning
rock legend as well as a much-loved actress and music
composer.
It all began in her hometown Birmingham in 1977 when
film director Derek Jarman offered her the role of ‘Mad’
in seminal punk epic Jubilee. She continued to gain
strong roles, appearing alongside Katherine Hepburn in
the film, The Corn is Green, as well as playing 'Monkey'
in the legendary Quadrophenia.
By this time Toyah's band was gaining critical success
and her first album, The Blue Meaning, became a Top 40
hit. A TV Documentary and accompanying live album,
as well as hit singles It's A Mystery, I Want to Be Free,
Brave New World and Be Proud, Be Loud, Be Heard
plus the platinum albums Anthem and The Changeling confirmed her status as one of the most significant
talents of the Eighties.
In a career spanning thirty years Toyah has had thirteen
top 40 singles, recorded twenty albums, written two
books, appeared in over forty stage plays and made ten
feature films.
Musically, Toyah has remained fresh, uncompromising
and ground-breaking. In 2007 she signed a new worldwide publishing deal
with Zomba Music and released her first digital single - Latex Messiah (Viva
La Rebel In You) from the 2008 album In The Court Of The Crimson Queen.

Many people are familiar with Vince Ray from his record
covers, T-shirts, tattoo designs and posters, but what
they might not know is that he’s been twangin’ away on
his Gretsch guitars for as long as he’s been producing
popular and acclaimed graphic art.
Ray has recorded two albums with the Vincent
Razorbacks and two with Vince Ray and the
Boneshakers, and he has toured Europe extensively as
a musician. He’s had art shows in Los Angeles with
Posterpop and can be seen lurking in the casino at Viva
Las Vegas, an event for which he has supplied poster art
and T-shirt designs for more than a decade.
Ray certainly has his own way of combining his
influences, a style he likens to “Eddie Cochran colliding
with Motorhead.” The Boneshakers are a classic
rockabilly/punk trio with guitar, double bass and drums;
the group’s live appearances are a visual feast, with
hand-painted instruments, giant backdrops and tattoos
everywhere. His songs are the sonic equivalent of his
artwork—all about foxy femme fatales, hell-bent hot
rods and ghoulish grave-robbing greasers.
Ray has shared bills with artists such as the Meteors,
Demented Are Go, the Kings of Nuthin’ and the
Damned. Further, he toured in 2008 with the Stray Cats
and the Reverend Horton Heat and released the Zombie
Radio album.
With new book projects and music releases in the pipeline and live concert
dates scheduled for the year ahead, Toyah maintains her multi-faceted and
vibrant career.
Rockabilly Voodoo Gretsch guitar over a rhythmic rockin’ tornado of
pounding Rock’n’Roll drums and Psychobilly upright bass slapped
senseless. Vince Ray and the Boneshakers play as hard as Rockabilly can
be played, blasting out songs with similar themes to Ray’s incredible
artwork… gruesome Rock’n’Roll Zombies, bad bad girls, cool cats in
too-fast cars, booze, tattoos…

Alexa De Strange was born one night over a glass of
stardust in a room in South London by Alexa herself and
Shannon Lee.
'Translators for our imploding society' was how
ArtRocker described 'Give Me Walls', awarding it album
of the month and later an ArtRocker album of the year.
Since it's release our world has truly imploded and in
many places exploded. All of which provided much
mood for thought for Cold in Berlin's second LP.
Imagine a delicious cocktail involving an East End self
taught singer songwriter with a Royal Schools of Music
classical protegé, and you’ve got a delicious mix. Add
to that five other talented individuals including George
Stergiou (guitars); Meltem Yumulgan (back up vox) and
Chris McConville (drums); and then you’ve got the
fusion of talent that is Alexa De Strange.
Showcasing an incredible vocal range vocalist & lyricist
Maya broods, purrs & screams at the state of the world
and her place in it. From the harshest growl to the softest
coo, one song in a higher register, the next in a lower one.
A creation of interstellar alternative Rock/Pop and
anything else you care to dream of, Alexa De Strange
releases independently from its own in house label
Paranoise.
The band’s current sound echoes the unfairly musically
maligned 1980's. Not the synths of Tory pop but the
brutal guitars of the fledgling alternative scene. Swans,
Shellac & Sonic Youth from the US, and from the UK the
chorus, reverb and delay pedals of Bauhaus, Joy
Division and The Jesus & Mary Chain. The drums
remain as solid as ever with pounding overdubs locking
tight to future classic basslines.
Bona fide accomplished musicians with rock star
credentials, lead singer and bombshell Alexa has
written with Don Black, David Garrett, Rami Jaffee and
Andy Hill, along with being a professional vocal coach
to many international Rock and pop vocalists.
But it's the scale of the sound that announces itself on
the singles '...and the darkness bangs' and 'Take
Control'. If 'Give Me Walls' was dark and spiky, the
follow up sounds like a solid black wall of sonic death. Darker, heavier,
slower, faster, better. Haunting vocals over massive drums. Driving bass
versus eerie guitar lines. Choral chants of historical reenactment. Detuned
pianos, an Ebow and even a guitar solo!
F R I DA Y NI GHT BA ND S
Following the critically acclaimed debut album 'Give Me
Walls', Cold in Berlin returned in 2012 with their second
album 'And Yet' and the gothic and doom gaze singles
'...and the darkness bangs' and 'Take Control'.
In just over a year, the band have toured the UK and
opened for many bands such as Sweethead, LA guns,
Faster Pussycat, Falling Red, Voodoo Six, and the
Glitter Band as well as their own sell out shows.
They were 2013 Top 3 finalists beating over 400 other
bands to perform at Hard Rock Cafe to industry praise. They opened at the
prestigious Roundhouse London for legendary Adam Ant and toured with
Toyah through the year.
Still skint, heart broken & living on the fringes of society & acceptance, it’s
clear that alternative cultures romantic vision of DIY purity is no longer an
option. And Yet...
Just like a spoonful of Bella Donna with a shot of absinthe, Alexa De
Strange is a bitter pill to swallow perhaps – but with rock and roll the magic
ingredient – its potion of additive rock ‘n’ roll looks ripe and ready to be the
antidote to a scene full of wannabees.

S A TU R DA Y NI GHT BA N D S
New Model Army are a legendary global underground
cult band. Formed by Justin Sullivan in Bradford in
1980, their beginnings were inspired by Northern Soul,
Punk Rock and the incendiary atmosphere of the times.
Since then, they have had a long, creative and eventful
journey. They have been massively influential in
‘post-punk’, ‘folk-rock’, ‘politico-rock’, ‘goth’, ‘metal’
and all kinds of musical sub-cultures but they have
steadfastly refused to belong to any genre.
Without a ‘genre’ audience, and never having had a Top
20 hit single in any country, New Model Army still have
album sales in the millions and have built up an almost
religious devotion amongst fans.
In 2013 the band released “Between Dog and Wolf”
which became the band’s most successful album in 20
years. Self produced and mixed by Joe Barresi (Queens
of the Stone Age, Tool) the new album received
overwhelming critical acclaim and was described by
The Times as “a creative renaissance for the group”. It
was album of the year in Vive Le Rock magazine, who
said it was “one of the finest albums of their career... this
is a band surging forward not looking back”.
Later this year the band will release a new album, part
studio, part live album from the “Between Dog and
Wolf” tour. They are also the subject of a documentary
film by Royal Television Award winning documentary
maker Matt Reid, entitled “Between Dog and Wolf: The New Model Army
Story” to be released in the Autumn.
This is a remarkable band, as hungry and focused as ever with a continually
regenerating audience and creative ambition.

The Last Cry originally formed in the late 80s and
existed through to the mid 90s, with their line-up
changing continously. Almost a decade later, the
band reformed with Andrew Birch on Vocals, Tim
Green on Guitars & Keyboards, and Chris Carey on
Bass.
The band skillfully combine keyboards and guitars
weaving around the bass lines which come together
with the heartfelt and emotional vocals making their
sound as distinctive as the mixture is, and drawing
the listener into a lyrical maelstrom of fear, despair
and void.
The Last Cry took their cues from bands like The Cure
and Depeche Mode fashioning a dark atmospheric
and dramatic wall of sound which exhibits a
coherency, intensity and emotional depth.
Their debut album ‘Walking to the Edge’ which they
self produced, was toured extensively around Europe
and was met with great praise and attracted a lot of
attention partly due to their extravagant shows. This
energy is what helped to drive the band in the making
of their second album ‘Living In Grey’ which was
released end of 2012 on afmusic.
The soundscape that best describes their current
output is melodic, melancholic, edgy and powerful,
but also is more accessible to the listener.
They have had the pleasure to play with The Mission, All About Eve,
Skeletal Family, The Damned & Gene Loves Jezebel to name a few.

www.facebook.com/pages/The-Last-Cry/112348155471541
They left behind a musical legacy that inspired a new
generation of acts that then emerged onto the music
scene, including acts that had supported them such as
Southern Death Cult, Play Dead, Black Flag, Sisters of
Mercy, Social Unrest, Danse Society, Einstürzende
Neubauten and DOA to name but a few.
Then, more than 25 years later, UK Decay reformed for
a one-off reunion show (with new drummer Raymondo
replacing the sadly deceased Steve Harle). Footage
appeared instantly on various social media platforms,
reigniting not only their dormant fan base but also those
far too young to have caught them first time around but
who were only too aware of their legacy.
The winter of 2012/2013 saw UK Decay enter the studio
to record the long awaited follow-up to ‘For Madmen
Only’. The resulting album, ‘New Hope For The Dead’, is a heavy sonic
assault built upon the politics of dissent with contents that cover big issues
such as the twin evils of extremism and bigotry, the fracturing nature of
society, the lack of engagement by today’s generation and the attraction of
things that ultimately harm us. UK Decay remain impossible to easily
categorise, and just as the original records pushed musical boundaries, the
new songs defy convention. Heavy but sparse, angry yet poetic, they
continue to function outside any recognisable comfort zone.

Hailed as the author of a new sound, Jordan's music is a
unique blend of acoustic loops, celtic vocals, found
sounds, and the stories that surround them. Along with 3
nominations for a Tui award (New Zealand's "Grammy"
equivalent), Jordan has lent her voice to tracks on Cafe
Del Mar, a funeral scene on Peter Jacksons "Lord of the
Rings", and featured as guest vocalist with the Eden
House (where she is now part of the permanent live
lineup).
Jordan's live shows are as technically fascinating as they
are musicially engaging. She uses two loop machines to
sample her own voice live, in the momement, building up
layers of harmony and melody to blend with guitar, found
sound, and percussion. It grows into a fully fledged
whilrwind of sound populated by characters as diverse
as her musical influences: pioneers, sailors, maniacs and
mothers. In the studio, Jordan makes use of all the tools
at her disposal, adding electronic and synthetic sounds
to the backbone of loops and found sounds to create a
sonic backdrop for the characters in her songs.
Despite the fact that no two albums are entirely the same,
presses internationally have come up with descriptions
to lend a hand - from "industrial-tinged folk rock" and
“antipodean steampunk”, to "Urban found sound meets
celtified electronica" to "creepy, dark industrial" and
"Experimental sci fi for the criminally existential". The
constant is Jordan's penchant for blending the synthetic
with the organic. Her love of found sound spans everything from transport
noise to machinery to the electromagnetic signals of the planets rendered
into audible form. Her love of story takes her from real and researched tales
of the industrial revolution, to distant fictional futures where mankind has
ceased to exist. Her distinctive vocals are at the centre, with a passionate
delivery that ranges from the bloodthirsty to the delicate.
S A TU R DA Y NI GHT BA NDS
Formed in Luton in early 1979, UK Decay were leaders
of the emerging post-punk scene and are widely
credited (or derided) with coining the term ‘Goth’ in an
interview in Sounds music paper that subsequently
inspired a movement. Part of a musical lineage that saw
them emerge alongside the likes of Bauhaus and Killing
Joke, their single/EP releases and debut studio album
‘For Madmen Only’ were substantial Independent Chart
toppers. The album sold over 100,000 copies, but UK
Decay split up in late 1982 at the height of their
popularity.
But of course, the best thing to do is to listen and find out for yourself!

introducing Your DJs for the whitby goth weekend SPRING 2014...
DJ CyberAndy
DJ CyberAndy was Co-Founder of the sadly now
deceased Black Planet night in Bedford. When DJing
he likes to play a mix of music right across the Goth
spectrum - and beyond. He has done Guest Slots at
The Coven, Infest, Club AntiChrist and many more,
and in his spare time he runs The Temple Of Love
Webzine.
DJ Doktor Phibes
DJ Doktor Phibes began DJing at local goth nights in
his home town of Stockton-on-Tees, before guesting
at various other clubs around the North East. He
has produced and edited the goth/dark alternative
magazine 'Unscene' since 2005 and is passionate
about promoting new UK bands. He is very much
looking forward to returning to DJ this April.
Frankie D
Frankie D is a resident DJ at London's Slimelight
club and also DJs at Antichrist and at many of
London's
alternative
nights
including
The
Caterpillar Club, Synthetic Culture and Dead &
Buried. He is also known to many for his 'day job' as
the main man behind Flag Promotions - the UK's
leading alternative promotions company.
DJ Glenn
DJ Glenn is one of the main room DJs and head
honcho of The Wendy House, the long running Dark
Alternative party night at Leeds University. Expect
nothing less than Alternative, 80's and Goth floor
fillers all night, to make your feet hurt from all the
bouncing! The Wendy House is on most 3rd
Saturdays of the month: www.thewendyhouse.org
Loki
Loki Effect's long career as a DJ started years ago
when as he says 'the Dead Sea was only slightly sick'.
His taste is such that he's happy with Darkwave, EBM
and 80's as well as Goth, Industrial and more. He's a
firm believer in playing as many requests as possible
providing that they're suitable to the night, as it's
the customers that keep a night going.
The Siren
The Siren has been DJing at clubs in Ireland and the
UK for several years, and particularly loves playing
punk (her favourite band is The Damned), post-punk
and trad, so is delighted to be DJing again in the Spa
at WGW where she says: "people are so enthusiastic
about these genres of music".
