KCDS Representative Attends USDF Convention
By Alexis Losey
This was my first year attending convention and it certainly won’t be my
last! The convention was held in
Cambridge, Mass and held at the
beautiful Hyatt Regency. MIT was
down the street, Harvard was a mile
away and Boston not much farther.
History was everywhere!
Thursday morning started me off
going to the Region 4 meeting led by
Lloyd Landkamer and there were 10
of us present for our Region. We discussed upcoming events and dates.
2015’s Convention will be held in Las
Vegas on Dec 3-5th at the Rio hotel.
The 2016 Convention will be in
St Louis! I hope we have a great
showing from Kansas City!
The afternoon brought education
classes from Schleese Saddlery on the
Nine Points of Saddle Fit. John Hall
presented about Hind-gut Issues in
Horses. Don Kapper talked about
Performance Horse Nutrition and
Nutrients u sed durin g exerci se.
Sally Tiegs, of Greenbay, Wis., was the winner of our club’s Kansa s City-themed basket at
the USDF convention, shown here with KCDS convention delegate Alexis Losey.
There were different Forums you
could attend such as the New Rule
changes from USEF and Instructor
Certification Workshops. That evening we were treated to a Welcome
reception hosted by The New England Dressage Association at an Irish
Pub in Boston. We were all bused
over and treated to excellent food
(Con n ued on page 3)
KCDS MISSION: The purpose of this organization shall be the education of the members, and the
public, in the true meaning of dressage training and the practical application thereof in all equestrian endeavors.
The membership shall strive to promote the interest and appreciation of other riders, and of the general public,

and music. The pub was in an outdoor shopping district so we all took
advantage and window shopped
amongst the beautiful Christmas
lights and decorations everywhere.
Friday morning I again met with
Region 4 so we could share with
each other what we had learned the
previous day. That way we all could
learn as much as possible since we
couldn’t all attend every session
available. One of my favorite sessions
that day was the Round Table discussion t alking about di fferent
things GMO’s deal with and how
other GMO’s have dealt with or
solved certain problems. The ideas
and suggestions were flowing from
How to keep volunteers, Incentives
for volunteers, Communication ideas, Fundraising, Education opportunities and more. The hour flew by
and I really wanted it to be longer to
get more ideas! Hopefully KCDS will
be able to use some of the ideas I
learned. I was chosen to represent
KCDS at all the Board of Governors
meetings. So for the rest of the afternoon I, along with a fe w hundred
others, listened to what was going
on at USDF and then we all voted on
different items that were presented.
It was a privilege to represent KCDS
and because our club is quite large I
carried 7 votes. Now this year there
wasn’t anything large we voted on
but it is good to know that our club
does carry voting rights within
USDF! It was a great eye opening
experience into the workings of the
USDF.
That night was my favorite Educational session. You could either
choose to go on a boat/dinner cruise
or listen to Kristi Wysocki and William Solyntjes talk about Conformation and Movement. I chose Conformation! Kristi and William are
great presenters and very knowledgeable about what conformation
makes great dressage horses. They
showed pictures of horses with
plumb lines drawn through them to
show good angles for good movement and then showed pictures of
horses with bad conformation so we
could see the difference. I took oodles of notes and learned a ton.
Saturday was the last day
and I had one more Board of Governors meeting to attend. The fun part
of the meeting was the GMO baskets
that are given away to a lucky attendee. Each GMO can bring a goodie basket that represents their club,
so that meant I got to go shopping! I
filled KCDS’s basket with a good
mix of Kansas City items such as
BBQ sauce, Boulevard Brewery Beer,
Wine from a local winery in Lee’s
Summit, Chocolates, a Plaza ornament, then horse items, a horse scarf
and KCDS merchandise. Sally Tiegs
from Greenbay, Wisconsin won our
basket and she was really thankful.
That night was the Salute Gala
and Annual Awards Banquet held
there at the hotel. Several hundred of
us dressed in our finest filled the
banquet hall and enjoyed an excellent meal together around beautifully
decorated tables. The stage where
the awards were to be presented was
grand with screens on either side
showing gorgeous horses or smiling
riders. USDF President George Williams presented all awards with a
handshake and applause. All types of
awards were given from Rider
Awards, Breed show Winners, All
Breed awards, and more. USDF did a
great job of keeping everything moving along and everyone felt they got
their moment in the spotlight.
We had beautiful weather for
December and I was able to take an
extra day and sightsee. History was
everywhere in Boston so I took a
walking tour of The Freedom Trail
which took me to the USS Constitution, the Old North Church where
Paul Revere had a lantern hung in
the bell tower to warn if the British
were coming, Bunker Hill Monument where you climb 294 steps to
the top for a grand view of Boston.
Paul Reveres house, Longfellow’s
house and so much more were everywhere within a short walking distance. I was bummed that I wasn’t
able to eat in Boston’s Little Italy but
I guess there is always next time!
I want to thank KCDS for letting me represent them at Convention. I will be attending again, e specially when it comes to St Louis.
How Our GMO’s
Delegate & Vote Counts
are Determined
A GMO's member count as of
September 1 of the current year is
used to determine the number of
delegates and votes the GMO is permitted at the annual Board of Governors meeting. If a group member has
joined more than one GMO, they
must declare which GMO they want
their primary affiliation, which is
where their membership is counted
for voting strength. A GMO is allotted 1 delegate per 200 members, and
1 vote per 25 members.

Calling All Volunteers for Successful Shows
By Nina Fricke
KCDS horse show volunteers are the
BEST! The judges rave about you, the
competitors appreciate you and the
shows run so smoothly with a few
hours of your help!
There are jobs for everyone –
KCDS members, friends and family,
young or not so young. You don’t
even have to be “horsie” to help with
jobs such as set up, scorer, runner,
ribbons and awards, and my favorite
– drive the truck and water wa gon to
help water the arenas!
This year you can call one number to sign up – Nina Fricke at
91 3- 4 84 - 4 6 16 o r e m a il yo u r
preference of time and job to
[email protected].
Volunteer schedules for all the
shows will be posted ahead of time at
www.kcdressage.com as well as at
www.highpointfarm.biz.
Have a question about what the
job entails? Just call or email to find a
job that fits your abilities. Are you
showing but still want to help? Let
Nina know and your job will be assigned after ride times are available,
or consider helping on the previous
set up evening.
To be eligible for year end
awards, KCDS members need 10
hours of volunteer time for each
horse/rider combination. For example, if you are showing a horse, then
you need 10 hours. If you and your
trainer are both showing your horse,
then you would need 20 hours. See
www.kcdressage.com for complete
details on award requirements.
For each 10 hours required, 5 or
more may be from horse show help.
And other people can donate hours to
you. There will be a sign up sheet at
the shows, and anyone you recruit
can assign their hours to you. Volunteer hours from schooling shows that
are KCDS recognized also count
toward your 10 hour requirement.
The following jobs require some
experience:
Scribe—Requires prior experience or attendance at a scribe
workshop. If you would like to practice there is likely to be an opportunity at either a schooling show or
“judge a ride” workshops where you
could sit alongside the judge & show
scribe. Thi s allows you to brush up
on your skills without the pressure of
being the primary scribe. Please coordinate this practice with the show
manager.
Gate keeper doing bit & whip
checks—This is a good job for someone familiar with bridling and handling horses. There will be information on types of bits allowed and
instruction on how to do the checks
at the show.
Vol unteer coor dinator—
This job offers 10 hours of volunteer
time for EACH of the following horse
show dates: May 2 or 3; July 17 or 18
or 19; October 4. Responsibilities include checking volunteers in, making
sure they have the equipment required for their jobs, getting them
settled into their position, and hospitality for them (need a drink, snack,
bathroom break, etc.?), recording
their hours after their shift. You
should be there a half-hour before the
show starts until the end of the show
day.
KCDS shows are known for their
friendly, helpful volunteers. Won’t
you join us this year?

Write or Photograph an Award-Winning Piece
for Your KCDS Newsletter
Did you know that the USDF bestows a number of awards on GMOs
each year, and that you could help
KCDS win one for 2015?
The USDF GMO Newsletter
Awards recognize exemplary articles
in two categories: Best First Per son
Experience Article and Best General
Interest Article. Submissions are
judged against those of other GMOs
in the same membership-size division.
Any GMO in good standing with
USDF may nominate one of its own
articles, published in its own newsletter during the award year (Sept
1—Aug 31) for the contest. An article
by a GMO member published somewhere other than the GMO newsletter is not eligible.
An official with KCDS must
nominate the article by August 31,
and articles are judged on the following criteria: Thesis, Clarity, Focus,
Organization, Insight, Voice, Subject
support, Sentence structure and
word usage, Creativity, Usefulness.
For those who prefer to express
themselves from behind the lens, the
USDF GMO Photography Awards
recognize outstanding amateur photography in a GMO newsletter. The
photograph must be taken by an amateur photographer and published in
our newsletter prior to August 31.
Judging criteria include Impact,
Lighting, Color harmony, Creativity,
Subject matter, Center of interest,
Composition, and Storytelling ability.
Color and black/white photos
will be accepted, but be sure any
mounted riders in photos are wearing
headgear (helmet, derby, or top hat.)
You must also agree to make your
photo eligible for nomination and to
allow USDF unlimited usage rights.
Only JPG of at least 300 dpi will be
accepted.
A first place and honorable mention will be announced for each category at the USDF Annual Convention. Winners will be published in
the yearbook issue of the USDF Connection.
If you would like to submit an
original article or photograph to Extension, and wish for it to be considered for nomination, please contact

VDL stud in Holland. Francesca has been
well started under saddle and in addition to
her arena work has been trail ridden as well.
She has an exceptional sweet and laid back
disposition which would make her quite
suitable for an AA rider. Francesca has 3 very
rhythmic and ground coverin g gaits with a
good swing in her back which will make her
easy to sit. F rancesca is ready to continue her
training in Dressage, but I can also see her in
the hunter ring because of her calm demeanor
and her impeccable rhythm - jumping should
not pose a problem, her year older full sister is
well started over fences and her blood lines
are featuring RamiroZ on top and bottom.
