MC News: MONIKA CHIANG Sets Platform for Growth By Sharon Edelson, September 10, 2012 NEW YORK — “This is a turning point for us,” said Monika Chiang. With almost a year of business under her black-‐studded belt, Chiang has a better understanding of what consumers want. The brand, which is backed by Christopher Burch’s J. Christopher Capital LLC, is still very much a reflection of Chiang’s lifestyle and sensibility, which is sexy and feminine crossed with the elements of a hard-‐edged rocker. “The brand is very authentic to how I dress,” she said. “It helps that Monika has a strong voice,” added Terence Bogan, general merchandise manager. “She’s not indecisive at all. Monika is about the unexpected juxtaposition of things.” “I know what I personally want. I’m always in heels,” said the 5-‐foot-‐9 designer, “but it’s inevitable that you have to wear flats sometimes.” Leave it to Chiang to come up with a way to put some of the sex appeal of heels into sneakers and ballerina flats with a hidden wedge. “The hidden wedge gives you a certain posture,” she said. “It’s not overtly sexy, but you look a little better. For me, a heel is a mood booster.” Chiang’s mood is already up. She said the company is entering “the next phase in our business development.” Some of the brand’s initiatives include its first ad campaign, consisting of a 30-‐
second mini-‐film airing on Taxi TV during New York Fashion Week. Two freestanding stores will open in 2013, and Chiang continues to seek “the perfect space” on Madison Avenue. Bogan said 15 Monika Chiang units will be operating in the U.S. by 2015. Burch has said he plans to invest $15 million to $20 million in Monika Chiang over the next four to five years and that the brand will ultimately have 150 stores. The company has a goal of increasing e-‐commerce’s share of total business from 8 percent to 15 percent. The site on Sept. 4 unveiled a facelift, with a major redesign and relaunch in early 2013. Chiang is also building a wholesale business. The brand is being represented by Showroom Seven. Intermix, its first wholesale account, is launching Chiang’s shoes this month. Surprised by the positive response to apparel and jewelry — Chiang thought shoes and handbags would be the most popular — new categories are planned for spring, including lingerie, swimwear and performance athleticwear. “I’m very active myself,” Chiang said. “I don’t see anything cool that you can throw on to go to the gym. We’re also looking to expand dresses and ramp up with more tops.” For spring, there’s a watersnake clutch with silver bullet closure, at $290, and a raja hobo in reptile-‐
embossed matte leather, $550. True to her belief that “jewelry is about being bold,” Chiang designed a sapphire bejeweled body necklace, $395, gold spike necklace, $495, and gunmetal chain vest, $295. “We’ve been doing well with denim,” Chiang said. “We have an over-‐the-‐top embellished jean for $2,500. A sales associate in our L.A. office called and told me that a 13-‐year-‐
old came in and bought a pair.” As for the ad campaign, “I’ve wanted to do a mini film since the brand launched, but we hadn’t established the Monika Chiang woman yet,” Chiang said. It starts with a beautiful blonde holding a crocodile handbag and walking into an apartment to the strains of “Ave Maria.” Ignoring the handsome man sitting on the couch, she slips out of her dress and silver-‐capped high heels and puts on a long-‐sleeve black leather bodysuit, black leather gloves and silver spiked sneakers. While she works up a sweat with a medicine ball, the man, who’s been working up a lather on the couch, approaches, and she kicks a soccer ball toward him. “It’s about power,” Chiang said. “I imagine people will think it’s provocative. I like to push the envelope.” The campaign includes a billboard on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles and a full-‐page ad in Du Jour magazine. SCENE in New York MAGAZINE – Cover Story Monika graces the cover of SCENE Magazine for the September Fashion Issue – she is profiled inside about all things MONIKA CHIANG. Copies are available at the store or through the PR Department. The issue was released on September 6th, the same day as our MBFW presentation and Fashion’s Night Out. Presentation of the MONIKA CHIANG Spring/Summer 2013 Collection On September 6th, Monika presented her vision of “Luxe Athleticism” for Spring 2013 at Lincoln Center in NYC. The presentation was part of the official Mercedes Benz Fashion Week program and marked the opening day of New York Fashion Week. It was attended by a group of key editors, buyers and VIPs. For the presentation, Monika worked with stylist Natasha Royt and beauty teams from LANCOME and Redken/Cutler Salons. Monika drew her initial inspiration for the collection from a trip that she recently took to South Africa. Many of the colors, textures and natural patterns that Monika witnessed in South Africa contributed to the palette and patterns developed for this collection. Monika also chose to highlight traditionally athletic wear styles, but reconceived with new proportions and in luxe fabrications. MERCEDES BENZ NEW YORK SOCIAL MEDIA: Monika and key MONIKA CHIANG products have been featured throughout the social media outreach program created by Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Two examples appear above and can also be seen in the video section below. Additionally, we will be launching a Facebook contest with MBFW today to give away a pair of Artemy Spike Sneakers. MERCEDES BENZ NEW YORK FASHION WEEK OFFICIAL EXHIBITION: Lincoln Center EXHIBITION: MONIKA CHIANG was selected to be included in the official Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Key Visual Displays at Lincoln Center from Sept 4th – 14th. Two pairs of MONIKA CHIANG Artemys sneakers (both the Spike and Gunmetal leather versions) are on display on two mannequins and our Faiza Cuff Sandal in Grey Perforated Suede in the MBFW "Street Style" accessories exhibition (alongside accessories by CHANEL & Alexander McQueen) at Lincoln Center throughout New York Fashion Week. Our inclusion here really speaks to the quality and innovation of MC design. Reviews and Articles: http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/fashionweek/photos/0,,20626220_20625136_21204393,
00.html Monika Chiang It’s a woman’s world in the fashion industry this season! The rising stars catching our eyes—and the hearts of celebrities—all share one focus: to make women to feel empowered, confident, and beautiful through their clothes… and they know how because, as women, they’re dressing for themselves, too. Celeb Fans -‐ Sofia Vergara, Paula Patton What to Love -‐ Chiang is ambitious -‐-‐ she immediately opened two stores after launching her line last year -‐-‐ and she designs for ambitious women. Her line offers options for a spectrum of occasions, from tough-‐girl leather jackets to perfectly-‐draped dresses, as well as handbags, shoes, and accessories. It's a one-‐stop shop for power-‐dressing. The Designer Point of View -‐ "Everything I design has to be something that I would want to wear myself," says Chiang. "I want the women who wear my clothes to feel beautiful, desirable, and protected." Where to Buy -‐ Shop her stores New York and Los Angeles, and online at monikachiang.com -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐ WWD: http://www.wwd.com/runway/spring-‐ready-‐to-‐wear-‐2013/review/monika-‐chiang "A recent trip to South Africa inspired Monika Chiang, but the result was less Karen Blixen romance and more Cape Town nightlife: athletic looks such as oversize baseball jackets in lace or cotton with leather trims, slouchy silk blouses and sporty drawstring pants and skirts — with a few safari-‐
inspired elements sprinkled in." -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐ NY Runway Trend: Sporty Looks Good sportsmanship is always key, even in fashion. And in New York, athletic-‐inspired details are making a comeback on the spring runways. With perforated leather panels, mesh details, multistraps and tractor soles, even sleek stilettos are getting the sporty treatment for spring. While wedge sneakers are not to be discounted, their sexier cousin, the sneaker stiletto, stole the show at DKNY, complete with rubber platforms and Velcro closures. -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐ Style.com: http://www.style.com/stylefile/2012/09/monika-‐chiang-‐spring-‐2013/ Label: Monika Chiang Need to know: Monika Chiang’s fourth collection proved that she’s already got the formula for creating edgy sportswear down pat. Her on-‐trend accessories—think Isabel Marant-‐esque, studded sneaker wedges and chunky chain jewelry—are already flying off the shelves, and the Spring lineup was full of pieces that should fare equally well on the sales floor (after all, Chiang’s entrepreneur boyfriend, Chris Burch, is backing the line, and he knows a thing or two about driving a profit). Highlights at yesterday’s presentation include boxy bomber jackets cut from soft nappa leather and laminated lace, bright drawstring track pants cut from parachute silk, and sequin-‐
embellished bra tops that upped the glam factor a bit. The designer’s growing fan base will go for the chain-‐link lace-‐up sandals and ankle-‐strap, architectural pumps here. They say: “I was recently in South Africa over New Year’s and wasn’t expecting the vibrancy I experienced there. I found myself waking up extra early—and believe me, I’m not a morning person—to go on a run and explore the area, so this was really all about athleticism, but done my way,” Chiang told Style.com at the presentation yesterday. Where to find it: Monika Chiang boutiques at 125 Wooster St., NYC, and 108 S. Robertson Boulevard, L.A." NY DAILY NEWS: print editon MONIKA CHIANG accessories from the Spring/Summer ’13 presentation were featured as part of a Fashion Week round-‐up. Fashionista: http://fashionista.com/2012/09/show-‐notes-‐monika-‐chiang-‐spring-‐2013/ The Clothes: Monika Chiang’s spring range suggested athleticism, but certainly not without glamor. Drawstring waists, silky track pants, anoraks and woven baseball caps were dressed up with structured leather, tailored blouses and blazers, and intricate statement heels. The overall effect of the girls was a sleek minimalism, but on closer look there was plenty in the details. For example, there was glittery piping on a baby blue biker jacket and snakeskin piping on an otherwise simple black, leather skirt. Shoes featured texture and embellishment in the form of chains and studs. The Hair & Makeup: The models had a healthy glow with dewy black lashes and peachy cheeks. The hair was clean and pulled behind the ears away from the face. The Vibe: The Lincoln Center presentation was pretty hectic, as they let in everyone at once. Luckily the models were calm, cool and collected as they stood in a semi-‐circle on raised platforms. The Front Row: There was none, but we spied Elettra Wiedemann and Meredith Melling Burke in the crowd. Celebrity We’d Most Like to See Wearing this Collection: Rihanna would rock the sporty-‐glam vibe like no other. WTF Moment: There were a lot of elbows flying as everyone scrambled to get a closer look and shots of the collection at the same time. What the designer said: “This season is all about luxe-‐athleticism. I was recently in South Africa, and I was so amazed by the energy and vibrancy, which you’ll see in the colors–saturated blue, mango, jungle green. It really isn’t about a certain age or type of girl with my collections, but more so an attitude. The woman values great design and beautiful fabrics. She knows trends but doesn’t chase them. The shoes and bags are a big statement. For me, it’s about the chunky heel this season and no more platforms. I am exploring different shapes and colors.”

Designs-‐For-‐Herself Monika Chiang Really Just Designs For Herself When I mentioned to Monika Chiang that her Spring 2013 collection looked like the-‐well edited wardrobe of a stylist, she laughed. "Yeah if you have every piece, you're set," she said. "And there's more backstage!" What you're truly getting, though, is Chiang's dream wardrobe. "Well, it's really about me," she admitted. "It's kind of selfish but, it's what I want to wear. And what I see myself doing and what I see myself in. Everything is really authentic to my lifestyle, whatever I do. And I'm not a black-‐tie kind of person. So it's more about being easy, casual. But feeling great and confident." -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐ Styleite: (http://www.styleite.com/media/monika-‐chiang-‐spring-‐2013/#0) "Things are moving quite fast for Monika Chiang. She debuted her eponymous line just last year, and now she’s showing her latest collection at Lincoln Center. Chiang presented her spring 2013 collection this afternoon to a room full of editors and buyers, all of whom were clamoring for a look at this season’s offerings, which she referred to as “luxurious athleticism. I feel so honored to be amongst other talented designers. This is where it is, so I’m very excited. It’s kind of surreal, I don’t really want to think about it because I get overwhelmed by everything. So, I just stay here and take little steps at a time. This is the dream. You know what else was a dream? The clothes! The collection boasts chic varsity jackets (three words that don’t usually go together), tough moto toppers, beautifully pleated maxi dresses, silk shorts, and lux accessories iterated in faux and real water snake, stingray, and python skins. I was in South Africa recently, and was so inspired by the energy and color there. I would get up in the morning and run, I’m not a morning person at all. But I would run, and it’s a good way of seeing and exploring new places that you wouldn’t get to by car. Gossip Girl‘s Tika Sumpter also praised Chiang’s looks: 'I love the colors, I love how she kind of mixes masculine and feminine together. The shoes are so dope. They’re not skinny heels, they’re chunky. Comfort! Amen!'” PEOPLE STYLEWATCH: http://www.peoplestylewatch.com/people/stylewatch/package/gallery/0,,20222041_20628157,00

By providing a mixture of prints, airy pleated pants, a sharp cut leather jacket and top, Chiang went beyond the traditional runway show for a presentation that was strong enough because of the range." The fitted caps are reminiscent of your boyfriend's Yankee's cap (but a bit more polished, natch). The shoes are architectural, with bright pops, snakeskin and comfortable platforms that don't feel extreme. Envelope clutches, while not the most practical, are everywhere for spring 2013. These updated versions are beautiful, structured and feel more substantial than the versions of seasons past. The fitted caps and updated varsity jackets add a breath of fresh air into a wearable collection that is sure to be a hit with retailers come spring." -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐ Fashion Windows: (http://www.fashionwindows.net/2012/09/monika-‐chiang-‐springsummer-‐2013/) "Entitled ‘Native Geometry’, the designer, Monika Chiang was inspired by a recent trip she took to South Africa for her Spring/Summer 2013 collection. The designer exclaimed “I was inspired by all the energy and beauty I experienced while traveling through the various regions. For this collection, I wanted to explore those references, from the vibrancy of Cape Town to the incredible colors and textures I encountered. There is a beautiful geometry present in everything from the textiles and native crafts to the rugged terrain. Looks in the collection consist of classic athletic styles with dramatic volumes including an oversized, cotton baseball jacket with leather trim, an embellished leather pencil skirt, a parachute silk track pant, a slouchy boyfriend jacket, and a silk wrap blouse. Collection hues consist of basic shades of grey, black, navy, and nude, as well as colorful hues of mango, ivory, and green. Her Spring 2013 collection that she showed at New York Fashion Week today at Lincoln Center were full of contrasting extremes that with her signature touch come together in perfect harmony. Inspired by her travels in South Africa, a vibrant orange and safari beige dominated the collection, which had a courageous variety of day looks, night looks, dresses, outerwear, and even a sexy cropped tank top. The collection was well presented with one of the strongest casts of models I have seen. With a show this well received, Monika Chiang will undoubtedly continue to be embraced by a growing number of retailers both locally and internationally.
