Born August 16, 1890, inWisconsin Rapids,WI,
Natwick worked for a number of other animation studios during his
career, including Ub Iwerks,Walt Disney,Walter Lantz, UPA, and Richard
Williams. He was the lead animator on SnowWhite & the Seven Dwarfs,
and helped animate Mickey Mouse in Fantasia, and Mr. Magoo and
many other 1940’s and‘50’s cartoon greats.
The New York Times called Grim the“dean of animation,”and today,
the ASIFA-Hollywood International Animated Film Society calls him:
“Undoubtedly one of the most
influential animators who ever lived.”
At Grim’s 100th birthday party, three former assistants, Walter Lantz,
Chuck Jones and Marc Davis, all spoke of Grim's generosity and
friendship. They credited Grim with teaching them their trade and
inspiring them to become better artists.
“Those three men weren't alone in that. Dozens of other great animators
all traced their own accomplishments back to Grim's example when they
were just starting out. Grim's‘kid assistants’went on to form the artistic
core of every major animation studio in the United States.
“Grim is the greatest animator who ever lived, not just for his own
accomplishments, but for what he shared with coworkers. Animation
was never just a job; it was his
passion. He instilled that passion in
his assistants, and those assistants
went out into the world and
became great themselves. Grim
Natwick was the catalyst who
made the entire history of
animation possible. That's why
he is the greatest animator
who ever lived.”

Once upon a time, an extraordinary Wisconsin
Rapids artist named Myron“Grim”Natwick was a
top animator at Fleischer Studios, the birthplace of
world-famous Betty Boop. Grim used his artistic
talents at Fleischer Studios in New York City as a
key member of the team that brought Betty to the
screen as the sassy“booper”girl we know today.

In 1930, one of America’s and the world’s favorite
cartoon characters arrived with a big“Boop-oop-a-doop!”
Betty Boop sprang to life at Max Fleischer’s Fleischer Studios
in New York where Wisconsin Rapids native Grim Natwick
was top animator. And 80 years later, Betty Boop’s popularity
defies time, continuing to attract new fans.
