International Conference
on Clinical Ethics Consultation
Caring for the Ethically Complicated Patient
MAY 19–22, 2016
OMNI SHOREHAM HOTEL | WASHINGTON, DC

Hosted by The Center for Ethics at MedStar Washington Hospital Center
Course Description
The International Conference on Clinical Ethics Consultation (ICCEC) was developed in 2003
by Drs. George J. Agich and Stella Reiter-Theil, to fill the significant gap in the field between
the explosion of clinical ethics, ethics committees, and ethics consultation services around
the world and the relative lack of critical and academic discussion of the many practical,
institutional, and ethical issues associated with this work. The inaugural conference, Clinical Ethics Consultation: First International Assessment Summit
was organized in Cleveland, Ohio, USA on April 4-6, 2003 with 150 participants. Since that
time, the program has developed in both attendance and education and is currently the most
recognized clinical ethics conferences worldwide. ICCEC will take place this year at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. The conference
will draw participation from around the globe and showcase the complexities of clinical ethics
from various international locations. The focus for this year’s meeting, Caring for the Ethically
Complicated Patient affects all practicing clinical ethicists and healthcare practitioners.
Presentations will address management and caring for these patients through case
presentations, panel discussions, general sessions, and individual paper sessions. Additionally,
keynote lectures will feature individual presentations from Drs. Daniel Callahan and Anne Marie
Slowther, pioneers in bioethics and world renowned authors. ICCEC 2016’s mission is to bring
together diverse members from the healthcare team in order to improve the treatment of
patients and provide a positive impact on the global healthcare community.
Target Audience
Practicing clinical ethicists and ethicists in training; physicians and other clinicians interested
in the ethical care of patients and trainees including medical educators, medical historians,
nurses, philosophers, lawyers, standardized patient actors, religious counselors, social workers,
therapists, anthropologists and sociologists, health care administrators, quality and safety
outcomes officers and risk managers.
