The Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School caters for pupils with severe or profound and multiple learning
difficulties, or complex needs. There are 87 pupils on roll with 15 teachers, 3 higher level teaching assistants
and 41 special support assistants in nine class bases. We are also served by a part-time speech and language
therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and clinical psychologist.
The school is a purpose built single storey building opened in 1978 by H.M. Queen Elizabeth ll. It is situated on
the same campus as The Forest Community School. In addition to the seven class bases there is a sixth form
building, studio with theatre, indoor sport and art facilities, hydrotherapy pool, resources room, quiet room,
library, multi-sensory room, sensory garden, environmental garden, playground and soft play area. The school
also owns four mini-buses.
We are highly successful in meeting the needs of pupils with a wide range of special educational needs through
effective teamwork and a multi-disciplinary approach. We have specialist status in performing arts and are
committed to the development of creative arts and its importance in developing communication skills, physical
skills, independence, self-esteem and confidence. As a school we are highly regarded for our outstanding
achievement in these areas and renowned for our work in dance and drama and are often sought after to
perform at local or national events.
The school prides itself with its links to the local and wider community. We are committed to supporting the
needs of all families in the local community who have children and young people with disabilities and we are able
to provide specialist support and training for all local schools.
At QEII the primary department delivers the curriculum through a topic-based approach, which includes the
foundation stage curriculum in our early years class. A successful outreach project with our local primary
schools is in place. This includes supporting many pupils for up to three days in their local mainstream school.
The senior department is also committed to outreach projects with mainstream schools. A subject modular
approach to the curriculum is used at Key Stage Three. At Key Stage Four students follow the ASDAN
Towards Independence Award Scheme and sixth form students follow the ASDAN Personal Progress and
Personal Development courses. The sixth form curriculum framework is based on three core delivery areas:
independent living and skills for the workplace, catering and performing arts. Students will follow a core
programme from each area and will be able to choose options for more specialised courses, such as food and
hygiene, sports and dance leadership and accredited courses in performing arts. The school is organised to
allow flexibility for integrating pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties and complex needs such as
autism into other class bases in the primary and senior areas.

CREATIVE ARTS
At QEII we have always seen the potential
for teaching our students through the
Creative Arts. All of our students have
complex learning needs. Our Creative Arts
Curriculum is designed to enable each
student to reach their full potential,
particularly in terms of self-esteem,
confidence and independence.
Our reputation in the Arts began to grow
in 2007 when we entered the National Rock
Challenge Dance Competition for the first
time, performing alongside our mainstream
peers. Our ‘Monster Rock’ was very well
received and we were asked to perform it
on many occasions. One really memorable
event was when we were invited to perform
at
the
National
Dance
Teachers’
Conference at the Laban Centre in London.
We have continued to enter the Rock
Challenge every year since , and in 2014 we
were placed Third, ahead of seven
mainstream Secondary Schools. Our
Creative Arts have since gone from
strength to strength, and in 2009 and
again in 2012 we celebrated gaining the
Arts Council Gold Artsmark Award.
In September 2010 we were awarded
Specialist Status in the Performing Arts in
recognition of the high standard we have
reached.
In 2009 we entered our first Shakespeare
Schools Festival. Our production of
“Twelfth Night” was selected as one of
three schools nationally to perform at the
Lyric Theatre in the West End.
We have since entered the Festival with
productions of Romeo and Juliet, A
Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth. In
2013 our Senior students performed
“Romeo and Juliet” in our first ever
Sensory Shakespeare production, followed
by “Timon of Athens” in 2014.
Each Autumn Term all of our Early Years
and Primary pupils perform in a Christmas
Production.
The Creative Arts Programme at QEII has
been greatly enhanced by our Studio which
was officially opened in July 2010. In 2012
we were privileged to be chosen as the
West Sussex School to take part in the
Driving Inspiration Olympic project. The
emphasis was on the Cultural Olympiad and
we were joined at school for two weeks by
choreographer Mark Smith and world
renowned visual artist Rachel Gadsden.
Rachel has continued her involvement with
QEII ever since, and in 2014 agreed to
become our Patron of The Arts.
In the Spring Term , our Primary pupils
enjoy a weekly Dance lesson which
culminates in an end of term performance.
Art at QEII is a very important part of
the curriculum. Students are encouraged
to explore a whole range of materials and
styles. We were proud and excited to have
our first exhibition at the Capitol Theatre,
Horsham in 2014.
In the Sixth Form at QEII, all students
Study a three year, nine term Theatre
Studies Course, culminating in them
devising their own final piece of work.
Modules include Choreography, Technical
Theatre and Props and Make-Up.
Sixth Form students are encouraged to
pursue their personal interests. Expert
training is offered to those who want to
develop their skills in Technical Theatre.
Some Sixth Formers opt to become Sports
Leaders and support Primary Dance.
All students enjoy weekly Music sessions.
Singing has grown in popularity, and in 2013
The QEII choir was formed.
Students are welcomed back to QEII to
support backstage.
In June, 2014, the first QEII Gala took
place. This was a celebration of 10 years of
our work in the Creative Arts.
Many students from the age of 17 join
Ariel Othellos Plus, an Adult Drama Group
based at QEII School one evening a week.
