Tib Muller House – 503 Byron Street

1892. She was nicknamed Midge because
she was small and agile. She had blond

was the most beautiful house Betsy and Tacy had ever been

Hart Lovelace told her
daughter, Merian, bedtime stories about her
childhood adventures with Bick and Midge. Soon,
she developed these tales into a popular series of
books that was first published in the 1940s. Mankato
was transformed into Deep Valley, around the turn
of the 20th century. Maud became the storyteller
Betsy Ray, Bick became shy, redheaded Tacy Kelly,
and Midge became the practical, yet fun-loving,
Tib Muller.
When Maud Hart lived on Center Street in the
early 1900s, there was only one house on top of

her friends picnicked and roamed the hills,

Maud left Mankato in 1910, but it was her wish to be

The character of Carney Sibley (based on Marion Willard)
is introduced in Heaven to Betsy. An interesting feature
of the Willard house is the sleeping porch on the back.
“Sleeping porches were new and very popular, and the
male Sibley’s had built this one themselves.” (from Carney’s
House Party)
