September is a great time of
year to provide the membership
with a quick update from the
Programs Committee. Our
summer events are coming
to a close and our committee
continues to work with Mark
Jablonski and his staff to
transition our focus to our fall
and winter programming. This
year, we have had a very full
schedule of events with the
tremendous support of our
membership. Most of the major
holiday and social events were
a complete sell-out with events
like the 4th of July having record
setting attendance. It was clear
that the new pool deck furniture,
the remodeled Mecca, and
poolside servers were a big hit.
My thanks to the membership for
taking advantage of the things
that you like best about Medinah.
LOOKING BACK
I want to spend the majority
of the focus of this update
on our Junior Program. The
2016 “Triple The Fun” Junior
Program ended on a high note
at the closing dinner and award
presentation on July 27th. It was
great to see so many families
together celebrating the great
accomplishments of our future
members. I was very impressed
by the kids of all ages, who were
confident enough to speak in
front of the audience to share
their favorite experiences with
the program. The overwhelming
theme for the juniors was making
new friends, catching up with
old friends, and developing their
skills in their favorite summer
sports! This was highlighted
in the “Junior News” which is
a weekly publication during
the summer put together by
our junior program members
to highlight the activities and
successes in Junior Golf, Tennis,
Swim and Dive. A must read,
especially if you are underage!
Programs
Committee
Report
Here are a few highlights from
the 2016 Program:
• We had 241 juniors from
122 member families
participating!
• Many of our older juniors
volunteered time in our Junior
Mentor Program, which had
a huge positive impact on the
younger kids!
–John A. Duggan Jr.
Chairman
• The MCC Junior Interclub Golf
Team took first place in the
West District League!
• Medinah Monsters Dive Team
took first place in the West
Suburban Country Club Swim
Conference!
• Medinah Monsters Swim Team
took second place in the West
Suburban Country Club Swim
Conference!
These programs are very
important and create a focal
point during the summer
for a large percentage of our
membership. The participation
in the Junior Program continues
to grow year over year, which
fuels more member participation
in dining and social activities
around the club while the
families are engaged during
the summer programs. These
programs will continue to
grow with the support of

I would like to thank the 2016
Junior Program Chairwoman,
Angie Valdick, and Co-Chair
Stacey Ruben, for their
dedication to the Medinah
Junior Program. It takes a special
team of volunteer parents
to coordinate the summer
activities of 241 kids, across
four programs, over a 6-8 week
period. I would also like to thank
all of the Medinah Professional
and Administrative Staff for their
efforts on a great Junior Season.
LOOKING FORWARD
We have recently started
experimenting with some fly
fishing activities that we look to
expand in the future. As much
fun as it is to learn to cast, it’s
more fun to catch a fish as well.
So, we have started to stock fish
in the small lake on Course #3
located between #3 tee and #12
green. As the bass and bluegill
grow over the next few years
we should begin to see some
fun results. Come meet our fly
fishing pro from Par Fly at Camp
Medinah on Friday, September 2
to learn more.
Lodge Stands Manager Arturo
Medina and the gang are dusting
off the Lodge and cleaning the
rifles to get the shooting season
off to a bang! The Lodge is a great
place to hang out in a casual
environment during the winter.
4
Plan to come out, watch a game,
learn to shoot, or grab a great
meal with friends.
Our secret sub-committee is
already planning this year’s
Holiday Bash. If you were able
to attend last year, you know
that this is must attend event!
Our Candlelight Dinner series
remains one of the best holiday
entertainment opportunities for
your family, friends, or coworkers.
The Spirit of Medinah will get
your holiday season off to a great
start. Plan to ring in the New Year
at this year’s Adult New Year’s Eve
Party for one of the most elegant
dinner celebrations of the year!
Please feel free to send any
programming ideas or feedback
that you have to me, or your
favorite member of the Programs
Committee. I look forward to
seeing you around the club.
Sincerely,
–John A. Duggan Jr.

THINGS OF INTEREST…
”GREENSPACE”
September 2016 marks four years
since we hosted the biggest
event in golf! Hard to believe!
Time certainly flies by. There have
been 40 Ryder Cup Matches so
far. Hazeltine will hold #41. Yet
with that many in the books,
there are a few that stand out
amongst the rest. While Ryder
Cup historians can do better than
I in remembering historic Ryder
Cup moments worth mentioning,
1991’s “War by the Shore” at the
Ocean Course in Kiawah Island,
“The Comeback” at Brookline
in 1999, and “The Miracle (or
Meltdown – depends on your
perspective) at Medinah” in 2012
will forever remain the most
talked about so far!
There is not a single person
reading this that doesn’t know
the details! We had a lead after
the first two days, traditionally
our weakest formats. We entered
the singles, traditionally our best
format, and got whopped! The
pictures of the European Team
popping champagne all over our
property, all night long, can be
hard to see. However, had it not
been for the dramatic events, our
Ryder Cup may have become one
of the many, not one of
the few.
I, for one, couldn’t be happier for
Davis Love III. The opportunity to
captain the team again, I believe,
was deservedly his. After all, he
turned the tables on our toughest
formats and sent the team into
Sunday with a big lead. What
more could he have done at that
point? Oh, and that hole location
on 17 on Sunday? It was one of
five he and I picked as options
that we presented to the PGA of
America, who ultimately decided
what hole locations we would use,
and when. And they weren’t all
from the five we presented!
When asked about the Ryder Cup
I have said to many people that
for five years we were focused
on successfully delivering the
championship-quality product
that we ultimately delivered
that week. After evaluating the
state of the course in 2008, we
embarked on major renovations
in 2009 and 2010. We opened
the course a few short months
after rebuilding and planting the
turf, only to battle three very wet
and hot years as we grew-in the
course, while we hosted heavy
rounds of golf! The experience
was demanding – physically,
mentally, and emotionally.
Despite many seeds of doubt and
speculation, we were resilient
and ultimately, the golf course
stood up and played great for the
world’s greatest players. It was
viewed by more than 400 million
people worldwide, and it looked
spectacular! And now, as “The
Miracle at Medinah” is replayed
in some capacity every two years,
all of us can always be proud of
everything about our Ryder Cup.
One of the few!

We are all hoping for a USA win
this year! We need one, for sure!
I am eager to see how Davis, the

experience.
“We had a volunteer
team of 100
Superintendents and
industry professional
from around the world.
They volunteered
to work various
shifts throughout
the week performing
a host of tasks.”
Our green speed for each round
of the event was 13.5. The
announcers were giving numbers
like 14 and 15, but they were
13.5. That goes to show people’s
perspective on speed. A smooth
and true green will feel much
faster than it really is. Our weekto-week average on Course #3
this year is 11.7.
planning and preparation in this
regard. We started the project the
day after the Ryder Cup. By the
end of the day on that Monday,
#7 and #8 greens were bulldozed
and already taking a new shape!
It’s amazing that in the next
Ryder Cup on U.S. soil is here and
now. It feels like yesterday that
we were front and center. Time
flies when you’re having fun!
Our fairways were mowed just
below 3/8”. The same height of
cut you play on today. 3/8” is the
standard “tournament” height.
The challenging summer before
our event started with record
temperatures in March! We
planned to host 13,000 rounds
prior to the Ryder Cup, yet, we hit
that number by July 1!
Our rough was mowed at
1.25” for the event. We began
preparing the rough in early 2011
for this height of cut by aerifying,
seeding, treating with growth
regulators and fertilizers. This
task was very labor intensive!
We had a volunteer team of 100
superintendents and industry
professionals from around the
world. They volunteered to work
various shifts throughout the
week performing a host of tasks.
Davis called me every morning
and his first question was “How’s
the wind? Which direction?”
Beginning in 2010 we started
developing the Course #1 Project.
2012 was a very active year of

“THE JOHNNY APPLESEED OF AMERICAN GOLF”
Tom Bendelow was a prolific
Scottish American golf course
designer during the first half
of the twentieth century. He is
credited with having designed
anywhere from 480 (this
number has been confirmed by
his grandson Stuart Bendelow)
to over 800 courses across a
37-year span. Mr. Bendelow
was one of nine children from
Aberdeen, Scotland, where his
father taught him the game of
golf. Mr. Bendelow and his family
immigrated to the United States
in 1893. His first job was at the
New York Herald newspaper as a
linotype operator (typesetter).
Tom Bendelow was introduced
to A.G. Spalding, the sporting
goods manufacturer. Upon that
introduction, his golf career took
off in earnest. Prior to meeting
A.G. Spalding, Bendelow had
been teaching golf in his spare
time – most notably to the
Pratt family of Standard Oil
Fame, who also commissioned
him to build them a private
six-hole course at their Long
Island estate. A.G. Spalding
hired Bendelow to exclusively
promote the game in the New
York and New Jersey areas. In
1898, the New York City Park
District hired him to redesign and
manage the Van Cortland Park
Golf Course, the country’s first
18-hole municipal golf course.
Bendelow introduced various
innovations to American golfers.
These included the use of reserve
play (tee) times, course marshals,
public player associations, public
golf instruction and training for
caddies. He also believed golf
should be a sport that the public
could play at little to no cost.
About 1900, Bendelow moved to
Chicago to be Spalding’s Director
of Golf Course Development. For
the next 16 years, he crisscrossed
the U.S. and Canada, laying out
courses, providing construction
advice, encouraging players’
associations, and promoting the
growth of the game. Bendelow
also designed park systems – and
even cemeteries – throughout
U.S. and Canada. Bendelow’s
approach to course design is a
“naturalist’s approach” in that
he strove to utilize the natural
features of the chosen site
to maximize advantage. His
courses have often been called
“Olmstedian,” in that his method
of naturalist design was greatly
influenced by the work of
prominent landscape architects
Frederick Law Olmsted Sr. and Jr.
Most of Bendelow’s designs prior
to World War 1 were fairly basic,
focusing more on playability
and ease of construction and
maintenance. “After World War
1, Bendelow’s designs started
to become more strategically
intricate, particularly in his
work for private clubs.
Bendelow left A.G. Spalding
and joined American Park
Builders during this time.
Tom Bendelow, 1930s
“For the next 16 years,
he crisscrossed the
U.S. and Canada,
laying out courses,
providing construction
advice, encouraging
players’ associations,
and promoting the
growth of the game.”

“Because of his work
in bringing the game
of golf to the general
public, it is believed
that ‘more people have
learned to play golf
on a Tom Bendelow
designed course than
that of any other golf
course architect.’”
12
Continued from page 11
Construction technology and
client budgets greatly advanced
after WW1. These factors gave
Bendelow the time required to
focusing on developing more
challenging layouts.
One of Tom Bendelow’s early
designs was the Atlanta Athletic
Club’s 18-hole course at East
Lake Golf Club, the place where
the great Bobby Jones learned
the game”1 and later became
the inspiration for Augusta
National. “Bendelow is perhaps
best known for his three layouts
at Medinah Country Club.”2
Medinah’s property was originally
farmland on the north and a
forest of oaks on the south.
Lake Kadijah was a swamp. Tom
Bendelow gets much of the
credit, for he drew up the plans
and supervised the construction
of all three courses, drawing on
three decades of experience as
a golf course architect to create
his magnum opus. By the end
of 1926, two years after taking
on the job, Bendelow had seen
No. 1 and No. 2 open and had
drawn up the plans for the
original version of No. 3, which,
after cash-flow shortage, was
finished in 1928. Before 1929 was
finished, Medinah’s board had
won control of the remaining
land south to Lake Street and
instructed Bendelow to redesign
No. 3 appropriately. He did so,
and the new No. 3 was instantly
acclaimed as one of the world’s
greatest, opened in June 19,
1932. Bendelow died just four
years later.
Bendelow was inducted into the
Illinois Golf Hall of Fame in 2005.
“Because of his work in bringing
the game of golf to the general
public, it is believed that ‘more
people have learned to play golf
on a Tom Bendelow designed
course than that of any other
golf course architect.’ ”3 This alone
makes the complete restoration
of Course #2 so unique and
special. The treasure that Tom
Bendelow designed for Course
#2 will only be enhanced and
enjoyed for decades to come!

Wine Dinner
Friday, October 14

6:45 p.m. – Dinner in the Formal
Adults $130 per person (limit of 4 people per member reservation)
We are excited to introduce
our first dinner with historic
Napa Valley winery - Chateau
Montelena. The winery has
been operating for 135 years,
with first vine planting in 1882.
By the turn of that century, the
winery had grown to be the
7th largest winery in Napa, a
significant achievement even
for that time. Many oenophiles
are drawn to Montelena
wines for the approachability
of their Sauvignon Blanc,
Riesling and Zinfandel, but
also as serious collectors of the
always powerful and complex
Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.
Montelena put itself on the
global map when its 1973
Chardonnay, created by thenwinemaker Mike Grgich (who
went on to create the beautiful
Grgich Hills wines), captured
first place at the highly debated
1976 Judgement of Paris. They
have been making wonderful,
consistent wines since.

winery. The evening will begin
with a reception of passed
hors d’oeuvres and cocktails,
followed by Chef Michael’s

Bring out your family and friends for an afternoon of food and games
on the Pavilion. Pumpkin bowling, pony rides, and our annual string
donut eating contest will keep the kids entertained. Enjoy a hayride to
the pumpkin patch where every kid is able to pick out their very own
pumpkin to carve or decorate. Witness a giant pumpkin (over 100 lbs!)
transform into a carved masterpiece right before your eyes. In addition
to the buffet, try a variety of homemade chili as our Banquet Sous
Chef Beccie Stanek defends her title as the chili cook-off champion.
Taffy apples and funnel cakes too! Don’t miss this afternoon of fun for
everyone. Guests are welcome.

CHILDREN’S HALLOWEEN “BOO BASH”
Friday, October 28
5:00-8:30 p.m.
Ghosts, Goblins, Witches….Boo!
The entire Clubhouse is transformed for this spooktacular event.
Be entertained by a juggling vampire while you wait in line for the
infamous “cart barn of terror” haunted house (recommended for ages 10
and up). A “not so scary” haunted house on the second floor provides
the perfect amount of “spook” for the little ones. A sinister hayride
will leave kids on the edge of their seats! Then capture your scream
in our ghoulish green screen. This bone chilling night will also feature
a bewitching ball crawl, a diabolical balloon twister, a wax hand
station, and many, many, more surprises! When you need a break from
all of the terror, devour some creepy crawly good food and enjoy a
frightening, bubbling, non-alcoholic cocktail. Finally, monster mash the
night away to all of your favorites from DJ Charisma. Bring the family
and enjoy a spooky evening of fun for everyone. Don’t wait, make your
reservation today as this event fills up quickly!
Assigned seating will be throughout the Clubhouse (Formal, Grill,
Palm Lounge, Prefunction, Ballroom, Men’s Card Room) in order to
accommodate as many families as possible. Any special seating
requests should be specified when making your reservation. Limit of
20 people total per member family reservation.

100 WOMEN WHO CARE
Please join us on Thursday, October 6 at 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Please feel free to bring
a friend, member or
non-member!
We are a new group within our club dedicated to assisting nonprofit organizations that
serve our community, meeting up to four times each year in April, June, August and
October. At each meeting, members may nominate a local 501(c)3 charity to receive a
donation for the given month. Three charities will be randomly chosen. After a five-minute
presentation, members will vote by casting a secret ballot. The charity with the most
votes receives our donation and 100WWC members will write a $100 check on the spot
to the winning organization. If you miss a meeting, just send in your check. Membership
represents a $400 annual commitment.
Elegantly simple!
