SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2001
Southwold Veterans' War Memorial
And Veterans' Plaque
In September 1998, a small group of community
volunteers formed a committee to landscape this beautiful
facility, the Southwold Keystone Complex. We hope you have
noticed the new expansion with the many new trees.
The idea for a War Veteran's Memorial evolved as a
key component of this project. In October 1999, a separate
committee was formed to research the names of all Southwold
residents who had enlisted for active service in World War I
and World War II, as well as the Korean War.
The research committee, under the direction of Melba
Marr, spent the last two months of 1999 to September 2000
compiling data from the Southwold Honour Roll , Church and
School Honour Rolls and Women's Institute records. They
spent countless hours verifying records in the Elgin Military
Museum, newspaper archives, the National Archives and the
Veteran's Affairs & War Graves Internet sites. Personal
recollections and family histories were a valuable resource.
The Southwold Township population average has
consistently remained at approximately 4000 citizens for the
past 100 years. The research committee has determined that
284 residents served in World War I, while 257 residents
served in World War II. There were 3 men who served in
Korea.
In 2000, we honoured the 40 men from WWI and 26
men from wwn who did not return from the fields of battle.
Today we dedicate a plaque listing all veterans of
WWI, WWII and Korean War. It will have a permanent place
of honour on a wall in the entrance of this complex.
