Biggest 10 for Art

and Construction broke ground on the new indoor climbing facility located near
Katy Mills Mall. Photo courtesy City of Katy.
Momentum™ Indoor Climbing,
inspiring world-class climbing gyms,
recently broke ground on a 36,000
square foot climbing gym in Katy,
Texas. Momentum Katy sits on 2.75
acres at 25410 Katy Mills Parkway,
roughly 25 miles west of downtown
Houston.
A full-service climbing gym,
Momentum Katy will be one of the
largest indoor climbing facilities in the
United States, offering guests 12,700
square feet of roped climbing, 6,950
square feet of bouldering, a 5,520
square foot cross training area, and a
2,800 square foot children’s climbing
and play zone. Other amenities include
a yoga studio, retail shop, locker rooms
and a lounge area.
Momentum established a reputation
as a leader in indoor climbing when it
launched in 2006 in Sandy, Utah. The
brand is known for its innovative wall
design and youth programming that
has produced champions like Nathaniel
Coleman, 19, of Utah who this year
became the second person in history
to win the USA Climbing Bouldering
National Champion title in both the
youth and adult categories. Momentum
has also tapped top-talent like Texas
native Alex Puccio, a 13-time World
Cup medalist, and nine time national
bouldering champion, to coach young
people and adults at its Salt Lake City
locations and plans to offer similar
opportunities in Katy.
"Our vision for Momentum Katy is
to share the inspiration of our favorite
climbing areas with Houston area
climbers, and newcomers to the sport,"
said Jeff Pedersen, co-founder, and CEO
of Momentum. "Momentum member
communities are supportive and friendly
as climbers of all abilities strive for the
common goal of self-improvement.
After hundreds of hours dreaming
about and designing the perfect
climbing experience, we are excited to
be bringing it to life in Katy.”
To execute the Katy deal, Momentum
worked with Ben Brown of the
Houston-based brokerage firm Baker
Katz, who also serves as Momentum’s
master broker. Working with Baker
Katz, Momentum is also opening a
large bouldering gym near downtown
Houston. More details on this location
will be available in the weeks ahead.
“Momentum is an exciting brand with
a lot of energy and an inspiring story with
the unique ability to bring communities
together through revolutionary facilities
and an engaging atmosphere,” said
Brown. “The Houston market continues
to thrive, and we were fortunate to
identify and secure an outstanding
location in Katy for Momentum’s
market entry. We’re confident that the
brand will thrive here.”

42nd Annual Vintage Glass And Antique Show And Sale
August 19, 20 & 21
The Houston Glass Club is proud to announce
its 42nd Annual Vintage Glass & Antique
Show and Sale from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on
Friday August 19th, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on
Saturday, August 20th and 11:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. on Sunday, August 21st at the Fort Bend
County Fairgrounds in Rosenberg, Texas.
This annual event is the highlight of the year
for the glass club and its members. Countless
hours go into preparations to make this show a
success each year which has become one of the
top rated glass shows in the south. Collectors
and dealers from all over eagerly anticipate this
annual event in order to add special one-of-akind treasures to their collections.
Over 30 dealers from across the United
States will display more than 200 tables of
the finest quality glass including: depression
era glass, EAPG, American crystal, American
dinnerware, kitchenware and pottery.
Another aspect in making this event
successful has been the well-received general
line antique show. This is held in the second
building and features selected respected general
line antique dealers from around the area.
These dealers bring a wide variety of quality
items including furniture, jewelry, textiles,
linens, silver and more. One never knows what
wonderful items will be shown in both shows
and everything will be available for sale.
Again this year, we are pleased to announce
that Leigh Ann Winter from Texas Silver
Mercantile will have a booth in the general line
show that will include a repair booth. Leigh
Ann is a leading silversmith and glass repair
expert in this area. She will be available the
entire weekend, so customers are invited to
bring glass, silver and costume jewelry items
with them for repair or receive a consultation
on the needed repairs and costs. This is a rare
opportunity to get that special family treasure
restored.
Food concessions are also available on site
and will be catered by well-known local caterer,
Custom Caterers. The food is so delicious;
many customers have made dining part of the
show experience!
Admission to the show is $10.00 on Friday,
$6.00 on Saturday and Sunday, and is good all
weekend. Plenty of free parking. The Fort Bend
County Fairgrounds are located off Highway 59
South, just ½ mile south on Highway 36. Don’t
miss this fun event. For more information,
phone 281-240-0382.

Retired Rocket Scientist to Share Memories of Apollo

NASA launched Apollo 11 to the moon 47

Coaching Changes At Several Katy Area Schools
Walter Hunt Takes Over
Varsity Volleyball at MCHS
Fall high school sports are on the cusp of another
great high school sports season. District 19-6A
Volleyball teams take to the courts on Aug. 1 with
pre-season tournaments as early as the eighth. For
Mayde Creek, the Rams start with a new coach,
Walter Hunt, who comes to Mayde Creek after one
year as assistant coach at Tyler John Tyler.
Hunt was hired in late May to replace Aaron
Christman, who went 0-24 in his two years at the
helm. Hunt is the fourth coach in eight years at
Mayde Creek, which hasn’t won a district game
since 2012. To put it mildly, the 24 years old head
coach has a challenging task ahead.
Hunt says the biggest change he wants to make is
instilling a new attitude and a winning culture.
“I think the mentality is what I need to work on the
most with them, and changing the culture, bringing
a winning culture back to Mayde Creek.”
The Mayde Creek Rams return nine seniors.
Middle blocker Adna Deandrade, outside hitter
MacKenzie Arick and libero Morgan McMahon, all
seniors, are expected to play key roles.
Hunt describes Deandrade as a hard-working
power player who’s always at open gym.
McMahon brings energy and athleticism to the
defense. “She wasn’t stoked at the beginning on
being a libero, just because she can jump through
the roof,” Hunt said. “She’s a power lifter and she
probably has the highest vertical on our team. She’s
about 5-2, though. And so she wants to hit, with
that power, and she’s a firecracker. She has a lot of
tenacity in her. I told her, ‘You have the attitude of a
libero. You need to run the defense, you need to be
all over that backcourt.’”
Arick’s been busy with her club team, but Hunt’s
seen enough to be impressed.
“She’s consistent,” he said. “That’s the best thing
I like about her. She’s going to put the ball in the
court every time. She can hit so many different
shots – line shots, cut shots, whatever.”
Hunt said he brings passion in everything he
does and expects his players to have the exact same
passion whenever they step on the court. “Yes, I’ll
yell at my girls or rip into my girls when we mess
up, but I get just as excited as they do when we put
a ball down,” he said.
“Play fast; make an upbeat tempo a habit in
everything they do. We do nothing slow, whether
that’s a practice, during a game, getting from class
to class in school – everything we do is fast.
“I preach to my girls that defense and ball control
win games,” Hunt said. “If they can never put the
ball down, and we end up touching the ball every
time, then we’re going to win games.”
Jacob Phillips Will Lead
Faith West Eagles Football
Team in 2016
Jacob Phillips Picture courtesy Next Level Athletics
Former Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle Jacob
Phillips will lead the Eagles into the 2016 TAPPS
six-man season.
Phillips previously had been working on a part
time basis with the team, helping the athletes with
speed and strength conditioning. When the head
coach position opened up, he told Eagle athletic
director, Drew Long, he was interested in the job.
“We’re very fortunate to get him,” said Long.
“He’s already got good rapport with the guys, and
that’s one big hurdle to overcome as a new coach,
trying to establish that respect with them. I think he’s
got the ear of the guys. The leaders on the team have
been working with him, so hopefully it’s a smooth
transition for him.”
Phillips played college football at Belhaven.
The native of Baton Rouge, La., helped anchor
Belhaven’s offensive line in 2009, contributing to
an offense that averaged 308.8 yards per game.
Faith West went 6-5 in TAPPS six-man District
I-5 and made the playoffs last season.
Coach Dana Abbott TAPPS 4A Male Coach of the Year
in Swimming
St. John XXIII swim coach Dana Abbott recently was
selected as the TAPPS 4A Male Coach of the Year for the
2015-2016 school year, earning him the organization’s
Edd Burleson Leadership Award.
In 10 years as St. John’s coach, Abbot has guided the
girls team to nine top-three finishes at the state meet
and the boys to top-six showings seven times. Most
recently, the Sea Lions captured the boys and girls
regional championships, and the girls won their third
state championship in five years.
The boys also produced their highest state finish this
past season, placing second at state.
“This award is really a testament to the kids and
a team effort,” Abbott said in a release. “I am blessed
with tremendously hard-working athletes. It’s nice to be
recognized for all their hard work.”
Prior to his tenure at St. John XXIII College Preparatory,
Abbott spent 25 years (1980-2005) as the head swim
coach at Katy, where his teams garnered multiple honors.
Abbott’s many accolades during that time included three
UIL Regional Swimming Coach of the Year awards
and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas
Interscholastic Swimming Association (TISCA). In
2008, he received the International Swimming Hall of
Fame’s Paragon Award for Competitive Swimming.

Katy Rebels D’Addieco Win 2016 AAS
National Championship
2016 AAS National Champions Silver Bracket
Nikki Puno (21), Mackenzie Gilder (45), Caitlyn D’Addieco (23), Mackenzie Watson
(4), Madison Presley (11), Lauren Maxwell (50), Julia Mlodzianowski (22), Ruke
Ogbevire (1) Back left to right: Melinda Winston (32), Coach Tony D’Addieco.
The Katy Rebels-D'Addieco team won
the 2016 All-American Sports National
Championship in the 4th grade silver
division in San Antonio, TX on July 8-10.
A brand new team this year consisting
almost entirely of girls in their first year of
AAU basketball, the Rebels went to AAS
Nationals with the hopes of just gaining
their first National tournament experience.
Instead, they walked away with their first
championship trophy.
In the first game of the tournament, the
Katy Rebels faced a very fast and athletic
team from Monterrey, Mexico. The Rebels
opened the game with the lead, and held that
lead until the last 4 seconds of the game. A
missed weak side rotation in the defense
allowed the opponent to hit what turned out
to be the game winning shot from 17 feet
on the left wing. The Rebels, still battling,
executed their full court last second play
flawlessly, getting the ball to the left elbow
and sending the potential game winning
shot up as time expired. The shot rattled off
the back, then the front, then the back of the
rim again before popping out. The Rebels
lost with a final score of 18-19. This 1
point loss would ultimately send the Rebels
to the silver bracket.
The Rebels bounced back from their
opening loss to post their best scoring
output and largest margin of victory of
the season, knocking off their second
opponent 32-4, which included a 19-0
second half. A smothering defense with
tight ball pressure and aggressive denial
behind led to opponent turnovers and
limited shot attempts. Excellent passing
from the Rebels led to efficient shooting
and distributed scoring throughout the
roster.
In the semi-final game, the Rebels found
themselves in a defensive battle early against
a very aggressive, physical team employing
a full court, trapping press. But, the Rebel
defense also stood strong, and they took a
7-2 lead into halftime. In the second half,
the Rebels met and then exceeded their
intensity, and opened up the lead to win
the game with a final score of 22-9, setting
themselves up for the championship game.
Riding the momentum into the final game,
the Rebels opened up the contest with a 17-0
run, en route to a 26-5 victory to claim the
championship. The Rebels' zone defense,
which had been good all weekend, hit its
apex in the championship, allowing almost
zero penetration all game long. Working
as a unit, the Rebels repeatedly stopped
wing penetration, and very effectively
denied all entry passes inside. The Rebels
kept the opponent on the perimeter, forcing
difficult shots and collecting defensive
rebounds. Offensively, the Rebel guards
found driving lanes for layups, and the
post players worked for high percentage
shots inside, leading to their most efficient
shooting output of the year.
The overall keys for the Rebels this
tournament were defense and efficiency.
Season-bests in field goal percentage, free
throw percentage, and turnovers led to an
overall efficiency rating almost quadruple
their season average. Additionally, much
improved defensive execution as a unit
led to a 30% decrease in opponent scoring.
The team of Melinda, Ruke, Madison,
Mackenzie W, Caitlyn, Mackenzie G,
Julia, Nikki, Lauren, and Chloe played
phenomenal team basketball on both sides
of the court on their way to claiming their
first ever National Championship.
ESN Health To Open New Personal Training
Studio In Firethorne Area
ESN Health has announced plans to open its
second personal training studio in the Katy area
at 2770 FM 1463, Suite 102, according to owner
Ryan Kobermann, CSCS.
“After eight fantastic years at our original
ESN Health personal training studio in Cinco
Ranch, we’re excited about the opportunity to
bring ESN Health’s successful personal training
programs to this growing area of Katy,” says
Kobermann.
ESN Health Personal Training provides clients
with a customized fitness-training program in
a private, non-intimidating environment with
personalized service and upscale amenities.
Like its original studio, the new 4,300 square
foot ESN Health - Firethorne facility will feature
four 1-on-1 personal training suites as well as
dedicated space for small group training. The
fitness studio will also have a private shower for
members.
In addition, the new studio will feature a
healthy juice bar and healthy kitchen to provide
clients with post-workout shakes and smoothies.
The kitchen will feature nutritious meals to go
for clients.
“At ESN Health, we approach health and
fitness as a team effort in which our certified
personal trainers collaboratively work with each
client to realize their personal fitness goals and
make sustainable changes for life. Our clients’
success is our success.”
“With this new studio in Katy Firethorne,
we will be able to provide our clients with
the kind of healthy food that we have been
encouraging them to eat as part of an overall
healthy lifestyle,” says Kobermann. “This
allows us to provide a holistic and synergistic
approach since our clients can work out with
their personal trainer, get nutritional coaching,
get a healthy post-workout recovery shake, and
also purchase food for breakfast, lunch, dinners,
and healthy snacks -- all without having to go
anywhere else.”
Since opening in 2008, ESN Health in Cinco
Ranch has more than doubled in size while still
maintaining a very personalized approach to
training and fitness.
“Our success over the past eight years is based
on the fact that we recognize each individual is
unique so we take the time to understand their
personal goals as well as the various factors
that may have an impact on their success in
achieving those goals.”
ESN Health provides a full range of services
to help clients improve their personal health,
strengthen and change their body and enhance
