FAMU,” said Bains, a senior social work
student from Sanford, Fla. “There are
countless leaders that came before us to
make our university what it is today. We must
continue to show appreciation to those that
built this university by cherishing, protecting
and wearing the brand of FAMU, so that our
university will continue to thrive for the next
127 years.”
Bain encourages members of the Rattler
Community to display FAMU’s colors more
consistently as an act of unity.
“If more students, faculty and staff displayed
their love for FAMU by wearing our colors and
paraphernalia, there will be a greater sense
of unity among our entire university. We are
known to be a ‘FAMUly’ but there is always
room for growth and progression,” Bain said.
According to Thompson, wearing FAMU
paraphernalia is also an avenue to bring
funding to the university by ensuring that items
are purchased from a merchant who is an
official licensee of the university. Thompson
explained that purchasing FAMU paraphernalia from unauthorized vendors does not
directly benefit the university.
“It is not only important to don FAMU gear,

but you should also ensure that you purchase
FAMU-related items from licensed vendors,”
Thompson said. “This serves as a means
to help protect the university’s brand and
trademark, and helps to generate funds to
assist the athletic department. Currently, the
university receives 10 percent in royalties on
all licensed merchandise sold.”
According to alumna Angela Suggs,
FAMU’s assistant athletic director for
marketing and development, not only do
Rattlers have a chance to provide funding to
the university and its athletic programs by
simply displaying their school pride. Rattlers
also have an opportunity to visibly show their
support to student athletes when they wear
their FAMU attire at sporting events.
“There is nothing more encouraging to a
student athlete than looking out in the stands
and seeing a sea of orange and green,” Suggs
said. “It’s a non-verbal way of cheering, ‘we
support you and are proud of you.’ When
Rattlers show up in their FAMU gear, its gives
our players that extra boost of confidence to
know that there is a team rooting for them
and standing behind them beyond those who
play with them on the court or field.”
